Chapter 17: People of the Homestead
Haytham Point of view
I am so bored, it has been under a week since the attack on the Homestead. For the past couple of days Connor and Achilles, had been my only source of entertainment. However today he left this morning with one of the people of the Homestead, to go and hunt. While I'm officially off bed rest for good now, I don't know anyone here only Doctor White. However after an hour, of dong exactly nothing I decide to go for a walk.
I put my coat on then frown, this is the first time I'm putting my coat on since the fight with me and Connor. I hadn't realised how huge the hole was, looks like I have to replace it as I headed outside. I wander down the path for a few minutes, it was a nice day a little chilly but not quite cold.
?: well hello there.
Someone said from behind me, breaking me from my thoughts and I turn around.
Haytham: hello.
I replied
Terry: my name is Terry, you're Haytham right? Connor father?
Haytham: yes that would be me.
Terry: it is good to see you on your feet, the lad has been worried.
Haytham: well it is certainly, good to be up. I'm not a fan, of staying cooped up in bed.
He laughed at me.
Terry: if you're anything like your son, I wouldn't doubt it. That from the wound.
He gestures to the tear in my coat, I sighed sadly.
Haytham: this? Yes it is a shame, I might have to replace it.
Terry: you know, I bet Ellen can fix it.
He clicked his fingers.
Haytham: who?
Terry: Ellen, our seamstress. I'll take you to her, if you like.
I nodded in agreement.
Haytham: by all means.
We walk in silence to Ellen house, I cross my hands behind my back as I follow. When we arrive, Terry knocks on the door. After a few moments, a woman opens it.
Terry: hello Ellen.
He says as he waves at her.
Ellen: Terry hello, who is your friend?
Terry: this is Haytham Kenway, Connor father.
Ellen: nice to meet you, mister Kenway.
She smiled at me.
Haytham: pleased to meet you, miss...
I reply
Ellen: just call me Ellen.
Haytham: alright, then I insist you just call me Haytham.
She nodded and she clap her hands.
Ellen: so, what can I do for you then, Haytham?
Terry: his coat has a giant hole in it, you think you can fix it?
He asked, as she stared the giant hole.
Ellen: come inside, let me see.
Haytham: thank you.
I say as I followed Terry inside.
Ellen: can you take off the coat off, so I can see it?
Haytham: of course, we'll?
I remove it and hand it to Ellen, she looks at it for a few moments.
Ellen: I can fix it, if you want but it is a rather large hole.
I rubbed the back of my head.
Haytham: I know, will that be a problem?
Ellen: no not at all, just may take some time to repair it. Without it being noticeable.
Haytham: well I have time, the hole on my shoulder has just healed up.
Ellen: what happened, if you don't mind me asking?
She asked, oh boy what on Earth I'm going to tell them? I thought in my mind.
Haytham: it's complicated...
Terry: I heard you and Connor, had a death match is that true?
Terry asked me, I was not comfortable of telling anyone about our conflict.
Haytham: something like that.
Ellen: a death match?
She asked with a worried look on her face.
Haytham: well I wouldn't exactly call it that, but it's not far off from what happened.
Terry: why?
Haytham: I don't know it I can say, I'm not sure what you know about his life.
Ellen: not any details, but I've seen the way he uses all those weapons her carries. I know he and Achilles are part of the Assassins group, that fights and kill for freedom of people.
I nodded to this.
Haytham: something like that, I'm technically his enemy.
Ellen: oh.
As she look backed at my coat, and avoided eye contact with me.
Terry: then why did he spare you?
He asked.
Haytham: well because at the end of the day, I'm still his father and we both do care about each other. Without getting into any details, me and my son have put the past behind us.
I said as I spoke the truth.
Terry: I see.
Ellen: well the important thing is, I'll have this fixed up for you as soon as possible.
She says
Haytham: thank you.
I reply warmly to her.
Ellen: of course Haytham, say hello to your son for me.
She smiled, as she placed my coat on top of a chair.
Haytham: I will.
Terry and I leave her house, just as soon as we do. I notice a larger man approaching us, grinning.
?: Terry there you are! I been looking all over you!
He says with a grin, I smile slightly he seems like such a warm and cheery fellow.
Terry: look who's up and about, Godfrey.
Terry says gesturing to me, the man Godfrey I'm assuming turns his attention to me.
Godfrey: you must be Haytham Kenway, am I right?
How do these people recognise me? I thought.
Haytham: I am.
I said warmly.
Terry: where are your manners, you giant ape? This here is Godfrey.
Terry said I smile warmly, and extend my hand.
Haytham: pleasure.
He grins and shakes my hand.
Godfrey: listen to him, British through and through. It's good to meet you too.
He says what does that even mean.
Haytham: do not mistake me, for one of the kings.
Godfrey: oh, don't worry I know.
Haytham: so what do you do around here? I'm under the impression everyone has some skill set, or trade they contribute to the community right?
I asked looking around the Homestead.
Godfrey: yeah, Connor built quite community. We both are lumberjacks, we've worked together for years.
I raised my eyebrow
Haytham: I see, what others traders are there?
Terry: well we have a huntress, a miner, couple of framers, blacksmith, seamstress, woodworker, pastor, couple who runs the inn and a Doctor.
Haytham: what a well rounded group.
Godfrey: for sure, say would you like to meet everyone? You've been talk off the town.
I chuckled at this.
Haytham: me? Why?
I asked slightly confused.
Haytham: what you think that Connors Father, would come to our village with a serious wound. Everyone is wondering why we've never met you, how you managed to injure yourself so bad. Also Connor told all of us, the attack on the Homestead, and how you saved him and Achilles.
My eyes widened, everyone knows about the attack and what I did.
Haytham: so I'm the topic of gossip, is what you're saying.
Terry: you're famous, is what you are.
I sigh
Haytham: I guess I've nothing better to do. My only choice would be to wait around, at the inn and hope Connor comes by when he's through hunting. Why not?
Godfrey: great!
Haytham: do you suppose you could take me to the blacksmith first? I have something I wish to see if he can repair.
I asked as I looked at my hidden blade, which was completely damaged.
Godfrey: of course Mister Kenway, follow me.
Godfrey turns and begins walking, as me and Terry followed him.
After about three minutes of walking, I can begin to hear the sound of metal pounding metal echoing around us. Hmm must be close now, sure enough the blacksmith is soon in our sight. Hammering away at something, when he spots us he stops and wipes his brow.
?: hello gentlemen, who's your friend here?
Godfrey: hello Big Dave.
He asked curiously, as he set the axe down.
Terry: this here is Haytham Kenway.
He asked as he patted my back proudly.
Big Dave: Connor's father right? It's nice to finally meet you. Names Big Dave, I'd shake your hand but as you can see they're a bit dirty.
Haytham: no problem, it's nice to meet you.
I say as I bowed my head.
Godfrey: mister Kenway, has something here he'd like you to look at.
He inquired
Big Dave: oh? What can I do for you, Mister Kenway?
He asks
Haytham: please just Haytham, and it's a blade that's been damaged. I was wondering if you'd be able, to repair it.
I reply as I removed my hidden blade, I'm not sure why I had it on but I glad I did. As soon as I handed it over big Dave, he chuckled at my hidden blade.
Big Dave: oh yeah this isn't too bad, I had to fix one of these for Connor before. I just need to get my hands, on the right metal.
Godfrey: I bet Norris has it, don't you think?
He implied
Big Dave: it's possible, but this one is slightly different than Connors. I'll have to see if he does.
Terry: we can go ask, Haytham needs to meet everyone.
Terry asks, as I laughed at him.
Haytham: I'm very popular today.
Godfrey: you know everyone, has been dying to meet you.
Big Dave: but does he want to? He's probably still tired, I know wound like what he had to take a lot of a person. Haytham, don't let them drag you around, if you don't want to.
I shook my head and smiled politely.
Haytham: it's no big deal, I am interested to see the town my son loves and worked so hard to build. Besides he's out hunting, so there's little else I could do anyway.
I replied warmly.
Big Dave: well then, by all means. Say if you see that boy of yours, could you send him my way? I've got something for him.
He asked as he placed my hidden blade, on his work desk.
Haytham: of course, it was a pleasure to meet you.
Big Dave: you too, take care now.
I nod then we began walking again.
Terry: I guess that means, you get to meet the miner next. He's actually the husband of the huntress, Connor is hunting with right now.
The explains to me.
Haytham: interesting.... wait something is wrong.
I say as we approach the mine, when it gets into sight. I suddenly get an uneasy feeling.
Godfrey: what is it?
He asked, as I stepped in front of him.
Haytham: I'm not sure... stay behind me.
I rest my hand on my musket, and approach the mine quickly. The other two followed behind me.
?: where is he!?
A voice yells, from inside the mine.
Norris: I... don't know!
A nervous voice replies, he had a thick French accent and I'm assuming he's Norris. Who's interrogating the locals?
I thought.
?: yes you do! Give me Connor the Assassin!
He shouted again.
I pulled out my musket, and leaned around the corner. There is a man towering over another, who was wearing a Templar attire. I sneak up and swipe his feet out from under him, then point my musket at his head. He raises his hand slowly.
Haytham: you there Templar! What business do you have with Connor?
I demanded furiously.
Templar: Haytham? I heard that betrayed the Templar order, and you're still alive.
He replies, as I smirk at him.
Haytham: sorry to disappoint, now answer my question.
As I grabbed him by the collar.
Templar: Charles Lee, told me to come to the Homestead, if he didn't return back to Boston. So I have come to put an end to your son, and you.
He gritted his teeth at me.
Haytham: huh better luck next time.
I sneered at him, as I shot him in the chest and his whole body went to limp.
Godfrey: Norris! Are you alright?
Godfrey asks, as he helps the man to his feet.
Norris: I think so, he's just really roughed me up. Thank you Mister Kenway.
He says and waved at me.
Norris: my name is Norris, by the way.
He replies.
Haytham: Haytham, though I guess you gathered as much.
Norris chuckles at me.
Norris: true I did, I'm lucky you showed up on time. You must let me buy you a drink, when I'm done at the Doctors.
Haytham: no need friend, besides I need to find my boy and warm him.
We step out of the mine, and then we all freeze. I was met with a musket to my face, I was glad to be in the front.
Templar: I don't think you're warming him, anything. You ain't supposed to be alive, and I think I ought to be rectifying that.
Another Templar guard said.
Haytham: don't be so certain.
I quickly disarm the man, and punched him hard on his face. Only after I do, I soon realised I used my bad arm that was recently healed. Doctor White did tell me, even if it is healed the pain will be there for a couple of days. I ignored the pain, in my shoulder as I Point my musket at him.
Templar: dammit!
Haytham: indeed, now you must be more of Charles goons, am I right? How many of you are there?
I said with a sassy attitude.
Templar: oh please, you are no longer the Grandmaster. We both know you'll kill me either way.
He snared, as he wiped the blood from his lip that was cut open.
Haytham: do we?
I asked.
Templar: well you won't get nothing from me!
He lunges at me, and instead of me shooting him. I merely deflect his attack easily.
Haytham: I don't need to shoot you, to outmatch you.
I say as he swings his fists at me, and I grab it and twist it behind his back.
Templar: ha haI've got other ways.
The former Templar elbows me in the stomach, then slams his fist into my healed shoulder. I gasp and release him, before I regain my composure. He pulls out a knife goes around me, I waste no time and shoot him just before he reaches the three behind me.
Haytham: bloody hell!
I hissed in pain, dropping my musket and holding my shoulder.
Terry: are you alright?
He asked with concern.
Haytham: I think so... I wonder how many more there are.
Terry: I don't know, but we need to get moving. Norris needs medical attention, and so do you by the looks of it.
I grimace and nod.
Haytham: you may be right, but it seems I really need to find Connor to handle this situation.
Godfrey: absolutely not, you're in no condition. To be fair you already weren't, but after you strained yourself fighting those two... you're even less so.
He placed his hand on my back.
Haytham: so what would you have me do? Let who knows how many men harass people until they find him? I don't want that for the people of the town, any more than I want my son in danger without at least knowing.
Terry: I'll go and find him, while the three of you go to Doctor White.
I frown
Haytham: I don't know if-
Godfrey: look Haytham, it'll be fine you are hurt.
He says and I sigh
Haytham: fine but when you find him, I want you to find me and let me know. If I'm not still at Doctor White House, I'll be at the inn.
Terry: of course, now go along.
Terry says before he runs to find Connor.
We leave to go to Doctor White House, I follow along behind Godfrey holding my shoulder. I really hurt my shoulder, and I'm not sure if it's more from me using it or the man punching it. Finally we reach Doctor White House, I stop ahead of the other two and knock the door.
Doctor White: come in!
I open the door, as he looks up at me and sees Norris being bought in.
Doctor White: put him on this bed here.
Godfrey did as instructed.
Godfrey: Haytham will need to be looked at as well.
Godfrey says, as Doctor White tends to Norris.
Haytham: it's not serious, I probably just need some more pain medicine.
I assured
Doctor White: I'll be the judge of that, so what did you gentlemen get into?
He asked
Haytham: someone attacked Norris he was looking for Connor, I came and dealt with it.
Doctor White looked at me, disapprovingly for a moment and shook his head.
Doctor White: Haytham you should have been careful.
Haytham: I had little choice, it's not like I planned to fight someone today.
Doctor White: fight?
He looked up at me again, confusingly.
Haytham: well you could say that, I tired to just point my musket. But one of them attacked me.
Doctor White: so you got into a actual fight? Haytham I understand that there was, an extenuating circumstance. But you cannot be fighting people, if you just healed.
Haytham: I'm fine Doctor White.
I rolled my eyes.
Doctor White: god you sound so much like Connor.
Haytham: I'll take that as a compliment, considering how much you all seem to like him.
Doctor White: take it as you will, but if you don't stay out of trouble. I will put you back on bed rest.
I roll my eyes
Norris: if he's anything like Connor, I don't think you could force him to stay in bed.
He laughs
Doctor White: well you may be right, anyway how is the shoulder Haytham?
Haytham: it's been healing fine.
Doctor White: you are changing the bandages daily?
He asked
Haytham: of course.
Doctor White: Good, hopefully it's still okay after your little encounter. Anyway, you're all done Norris go and get some rest and you'll be fine.
Norris: thank you Doctor White.
Norris says as he stands up, and pays the Doctor.
Doctor White: come here Haytham, it's your turn.
Haytham: as you wish.
I say
Godfrey: Haytham, Norris and I are gonna go to the Tavern inn. Meet us there when you're done here, alright?
Godfrey says
Haytham: alright.
They both exit the house, and I sit front of Doctor White. It turns out a broke the stitch, and he decided to clean my wound for any infection. From there Doctor White, removed the stitches and replaced a fresh pair.
Doctor White: there done. Now sit up, so I can rewrap it.
He says as I sit up.
Haytham: that didn't take long.
Doctor White: well it has healed, so I didn't have to do as much as before. But I mean it, you should be careful.
Haytham: I will.
Doctor White: your son tells me the same, yet he still winds up in here frequently.
I grin at this.
Haytham: like father and Son.
Doctor White laughed at my reply.
I paid for the procedure after he finishes, along with some pain from the medicine. I thank him and leave his house, I was now heading to the Tavern to meet with Norris and Godfrey. I enter and scan the crowd, I see them at a table near the centre. I decide to order a drink, then make my way towards them. I notice Terry sitting down with them, just before I get there.
Norris: there you are?
He says
Haytham: sorry the doctor had to redo my stitches. So Terry, I take it you found Connor?
I asked as I joined them.
Terry: yes a while ago, he and Myriam are searching the Homestead for more of them.
He says
Haytham: Good.
Godfrey: why did you have to get your stitches redone? I didn't think you did too much.
Godfrey says I shrug.
Haytham: I don't know, it probably didn't help that I fought with my bad arm mostly.
I implied as I took a sip of my drink.
Godfrey: wow, is this is the brilliant Haytham Kenway Connors always talking about?
He laughed and slammed his hand on the table.
Haytham: I wasn't thinking, but I suppose it wasn't the smartest thing. Wait, what do you mean?
I asked curiously.
Godfrey: about what?
Haytham: Connor talks about me?
I asked eagerly.
Norris: all the time!
Norris says
Terry: he thinks the world of you, you know. Say you're the smartest and most skilled man, he's ever met.
Terry adds on, and leans back into the chair.
Haytham: no way.
I say in disbelief.
Godfrey: he does! Honest!
He says and I smiled, I never thought in my life my son an Assassin. Would ever accept me as a father.
Haytham: Good to know.
Norris: oh here come the farmers, they sell produce to the inn.
I look over my shoulder, at the couple speaking with the innkeeper. They turn around and, Norris waves them over and they come to our table.
?: hello gentlemen.
The young woman says.
Terry: hello Prudence meet Haytham, Connors father. Haytham this is Warren and Prudence.
Terry introduces to them to me.
Warren: pleasure to meet you, Haytham.
Warren says, I stand up and shake their hands.
Haytham: the pleasure is mine.
I say warmly.
Prudence: we'd love to stay and chat, but I'm afraid we have more business to attend to. Perhaps sometime you can come by and talk, though.
Prudence says.
Haytham: I would love to take, you up on that.
Prudence: maybe bring your son too. He spends so little time on the Homestead, we never see him.
Haytham: I will try, good day.
Warren: to you as well.
The couple leaves, and I sit back down.
Haytham: I like it here, you're all so friendly.
I said
Godfrey: we try, we love visitors.
Godfrey says
Haytham: so I see, I know not everyone here lives on these parts.
Terry: oh no, quite a few are traders or sailors. We even get people here who work for Connor, transporting goods that he sells.
Haytham: interesting, well here's to the success and happiness of the locals.
I lift my glass, to that we all drink. I find myself drinking more and more, soon the pain in my shoulder is gone and my spirits are high.
I thought this chapter should be about, the people on the Homestead. Also I would like to announce, that this book will soon come to an end.
