Chapter 9

I wake up the next morning still in Gunnar's hoodie. I look at the clock and it's 9:21am and the other two are still asleep. I decide to just lay in bed, knowing that our game against Iceland isn't until 3pm, which means I'll have to ignore Gunnar during the game. I close my eyes, and find myself recalling the events of last night. I smile.

I open my eyes and look down, at Gunnar's hoodie. It has writing in Icelandic, but has a mascot so I assume it's from a hockey team back in Iceland. I know that I'm going to have to give this back when I see him, just in case one of the boys come in and see it. I know Guy is the one to be in here more than the others because of Connie. I get up and change and decide to go down for breakfast, I make sure I tuck the hoodie somewhere that it won't be noticed as easily.

I get to the lounge where they are serving breakfast and the only other person there is Dean, which surprises me.

"What are you doing up so early?" I joke, "it's usually like 1 before you even think about getting out of bed."

"I couldn't fall back asleep I guess." He states. I sit down beside him with (whatever breakfast option you want). "I have a question for you y/n."

"Ask away." I say and take a bite.

"Do you really think we are gonna win against Iceland? I mean they are really good." Dean asks, and turns to look over at me, and looks deep into my eyes. I know he's nervous, and he doesn't like expressing that often. He doesn't like being soft in front of others. He would rarely let Donnie and Kate see this side of him, but he never thought twice about it with me.

"I'm not sure we will win, but we will play hard Dean." I reassure him, and touch his shoulder. He smiles back and turns back to his breakfast.

"Thanks y/n. Do you think your little friend will go easy on us?" Dean says, and I freeze. I look over at him with a worried look. He chuckles. "I saw you guys the other day walking back into the hotel. Then when you said you were out alone, I knew you didn't want anybody knowing so I kept my mouth shut. This is the first time we've been alone since then, or else I would've brought it up earlier."

"You're not mad that I'm 'fraternizing' with the enemy?" I ask, with a sort of worried smile on my face.

"No. You are a lady, you are capable of being friends with whoever you want. But he touches you in anyway you don't like, I won't be long to break down his door. Even if he says something about you that you don't like either, I'll be at his door." I laugh and Dean laughs with me. I think about what he said about how this is the first time we've been alone to hangout since the day we left to come here, and it kind of hits me hard.

"Thanks Dean, and I'll make sure to tell you if anything happens. I'll also make more time to hang out with you." He nods, and we go back to eating our breakfast.

Shortly after a few of the other ducks start trickling into the lounge to eat. When Adam walks in, he doesn't even look at me. I shake it off and tell myself it's his usual morning grumpiness, but he doesn't even come sit anywhere near me. If anything, he chooses the farthest seat away from me to sit in. 'What's up with him?' I think in my head. I get dragged out of my thoughts when Averman starts telling me all the different ways he's going to beat up the Iceland players. With his words of course he adds.

I get back to the room, Julie and Connie behind me. Once the door was shut, I turn around to face them.

"Was it just me or was Adam acting weird towards me?" I ask.

"I mean he acted a little weird, I mean he didn't go sit next to you like he always does." Connie replies, and sits down on her bed.

"Okay, so it's not just me imagining it." I say, and plop down on my bed. "But why?" I ask quietly to myself.

Around 2 we are told to start getting ready. We dress in our own clothes but have to wear our team USA jackets. We have to be at the rink by 2:30pm for warmups and such. When 2:15 comes around, dad knocks on the door and says it's time to get into the vans. I meet Dean in the hall and walk with him. I sit with Dean for the ride over, and I could tell he was a little nervous because he starts fidgeting with his blue bracelet. The one he made for the both of us when I left. I grab his hand to let him know it's going to be okay.

Warmups go by fast and now dads giving his little speech before the first period begins. Once he's finished, we do our little chant. I skate out to my position and get ready for the puck to drop. A wave of nervousness hits me, and I have a gut feeling that something bad is going to happen.
