7. Clint's in the Loop, Unlike SHIELD

Peter's POV:

When school gets out, I wait till the hallways clear a bit before I venture out of the classroom and head towards my locker, not wanting a repeat of the Peter-embarrasses-himself episode that happened yesterday. I don't see MJ and Ned standing next to my locker, which means they must be waiting for me out front. Reaching my destination, I twist the lock and click it open. Unzipping my backpack, I transfer everything but my homework and supplies I'll use at home onto the top shelf, stacking it neatly. When I turn around to walk outside, I sadly am greeted by a very familiar face.

"What do you want Flash?" I groan.

"Just want to hang out with my favorite Puny Parker. I've been planning something all day. It will be sooo fun ... for me." Flash grins wickedly and latches onto my arm, hard. My backpack falls off of my shoulder when he starts to drag me away to the back of the school. I struggle against his grip, but reign in my strength to what "little Puny Parker" would be expected to have.

Once Flash drags me around a corner he punches me in the gut. I collapse, wheezing, and curl in on myself, making sure to cover my head with my arms. I feel his foot connect with my ribs once, twice, and at the third time, I hear a crack and breathing instantly becomes harder. Flash smirks and pulls me up by my shirt and shoves me against the wall before socking me in the face and letting me collapse back onto the ground in a heap.

"Don't forget that you deserve this Parker." Flash spits at me before walking away.

I lay there on the ground, trying, and failing, to catch my breath before I push myself up with a groan. Leaning heavily against the wall with my hand cradling my side, I wait for the wave of intense pain to pass, a constant throbbing settling over my side as it does so. Taking a deep breath, I re-familiarize myself with the sharp aching of a broken rib before bracing myself to go on living life until my healing factor kicks in like I usually do. Having a broken rib is never fun, but at least the pain is usually the same, which is weirdly comforting.

Before I can push myself off of the wall, I hear footsteps rushing up to me. I turn towards the direction they are coming from and am met with the sight of Ned's panicking face, "Peter! When you didn't show up we went looking for you and found your backpack instead. Are you okay?"

I nod while MJ walks up to me and helps me push myself away from the wall and gain my balance. She gently glares at me, attempting to mask her concern, "You idiot. You really should fight back before you're permanently injured."

We start slowly walking to the subway, "I know, I know, but I have enhanced healing remember? I should be fine by morning."

Ned looks me in the eyes, his face serious, "I don't think you should go on Patrol tonight Peter. Who knows what trouble you'll get into this time?"

"I need to go Ned, not just for the people of New York, but for my sanity. You know how much this means to me! Besides, FABAE will make sure to protect and help me. And I installed that tracker in her, remember?"

MJ sighs, "Fine, but you got to promise to call Ned or me if you're in serious trouble."

I flash her the best smile I can manage with the pain, "I promise."

By now we are stepping onto the subway and finding seats. I collapse into the chair and wince at the brief agony that shoots down my side.

Once we reach our stop we stand up and MJ offers me her arm. I wave it away before explaining, "I think I've healed enough I can walk on my own." She arches an eyebrow at me before rolling her eyes.

As we head towards our homes I can't help but notice how she subtly sticks closer to me than usual, ready to catch me if I fall. When we reach where we split up I wave to them and walk the last few blocks alone. I open the door and toss my backpack onto the couch before slipping off my shoes next to the entryway and walking into the kitchen, "May! I'm home!"

A response comes drifting down to me from upstairs, "I'm in my room hunny! There's some fresh cookies cooling on the counter."

I quickly wash my hands before picking up a snickerdoodle cookie, my favorite kind, "Ooh, hot hot hot!" I whisper under my breath while tossing the cookie between my hands.

When I feel like it's cool enough I bite into it and hum as the flavor washes over me. I sit down to finish it off and notice a text message from an unknown number sent a few hours ago.

?

Is this Sun?

I pause, halfway through chewing. Sun? Who is- Oh!

I type out a reply before happily returning to enjoying the piece of heaven I'm holding in my hands.

Peter

Yes...

Who is this?

?

This is Mr. Insomniac's friend

Peter

Mr. Insomniac's friend, huh?

And he has me saved as Sun in his contacts?

I'm tearing up right now.

?

May I ask why he has you saved as Sun?

Peter

We were joking that we are father and son

But he called me his 'Sun'

I wouldn't let it go and now I feel special

?

You should always feel special!

Peter

Thanks Mr/Mrs

?

I'm a miss

Peter

Oh, okay!

Hmmm....

I need to name you

?

Name me?

Peter

Yes

I need to call you something

Tell me some things about yourself

Doesn't have to be anything personal

?

I'm good at fighting

I live with a bunch of friends/coworkers

I'm considered scary

One of my nicknames is a spider

Peter

Wow

That's a lot more info than I thought you were going to give

?

Why?

Peter

Idk

You just seem like the secretive type for some reason

?

You guessed that right

But I seem to be showing my soft side to you for some reason

Peter

People think you're scary?

I don't think you're scary

?

Again, soft side somehow

And if you ruin my image

I'm going to kill you

Peter

Still not scared, but you're secrets safe with me :)

And a spider huh?

That's cool

Oh! I got it!

How about I call you Miss Spider?

?

Miss Spider huh?

I actually like it

Peter

Good!

Cause you're stuck with it

(Pun intended) (╭☞⌐■o■)╭☞

Miss Spider

*eye roll*

Peter

*Gasp*

A cultured person!

Miss Spider

I like you kid

You made me smile

And nobody's able to make me smile

Peter

That's just depressing

Miss Spider

That's how I was raised

Peter

That's rough

I've had a hard childhood too

But it's gotten better

Miss Spider

Mine has too

Peter

We can be better buddies together!

Miss Spider

Yes, we can

Peter

✺◟( ͡°∀ ͡°)◞✺

By the time I had finished my homework I still had quite a bit of time until dinner with Aunt May. Usually I would go on Patrol, but I want to start a project I have been thinking about for a while. I power on my computer and smile, "Hi FABAE!"

"Hello Peter. Thanks for putting me on your computer. May you do your phone next?"

"That brings me to what I wanna talk to you about."

"Which is?"

I slightly bounce up and down in my chair, "So I've been thinking for a while about how I can keep in touch with you throughout the day since that would have been nice when I was in trouble."

"I would also love to be with you throughout the day."

I pause slightly and glare at the computer camera, "You better not annoy me or I will get rid of you on my phone."

"Yes, Peter. As long as you don't need to be annoyed."

I roll my eyes at her, "Anywho, I want to be able to talk to you and stuff without having to speak. So when I install you onto my phone I'll show you how to access my texting app and text me properly. But guess what?! I decided to put you in an earpiece that's practically invisible to the naked eye! I've even drawn up the plans to make it and got the parts so I just need to build it and make sure it works!"

"That is amazing Peter, but why would you do that if I can text you on your phone?"

"Because FABAE, with the earpiece I can do so many different things. I can teach you multiple codes I can use when I can't talk out loud and you can answer back through the earpiece! Oh! I can also just plain talk to you through the earpiece so I can use it when my hands are full or during an emergency. There are so many other things I could do..." I trail off.

"I am happy you are excited to do this for me Peter."

I smile at the computer camera before pulling out the parts and getting to work. Halfway through finishing the earpiece I remember that I should give FABAE a way to see what I see so that she'll be able to help me better. After a while of brainstorming, an idea pops into my head that just might work.

In the end I decide to create a mini camera attached to the end of a nearly invisible wire. The wire would be attached to the earpiece, and then loop around the outside of my ear in order to snugly and comfortably hold the minuscule camera in place on top of my ear. You would only be able to see them if you knew they were there.

I concentrate on my equipment for hours, making quick and efficient progress on them. By the time I'm done, Aunt May is pulling dinner out of the oven. I sit back and admire my work. I have to admit that I'm proud of how well I was able to work on such a tiny device. Excitement rises within me at the thought of testing them out tonight on Patrol.

"Dinner!" Aunt May calls up to me, making me chuckle at the memories of her cooking. She didn't used to be able to cook. Usually whenever she stepped foot in the kitchen I would end up using the fire extinguisher, so I always made the meals. Eventually, May got fed up and became determined to learn how to cook properly. It took a while and a lot of hard work, but now she's actually able to make decent meals.

"Coming!" I stand up from my desk, "See you later FABAE," I say before leaving the room.

Natasha's POV:

I'm training in the gym when FRIDAY calls me up to the living room. I unwrap my hands, grab a hand towel I use to wipe the sweat off of my face, and step into the elevator. When I step out I'm greeted by everyone sitting on the couches with confused looks on their faces, "What's going on? I was in the middle of training."

Clint pouts, "I wish I knew. I was just about to win first place in a championship on Mario Kart!"

I roll my eyes and sit down, casing the room as I do so and noticing that Tony is the only one who hasn't arrived yet. I lay back and settle in, not having to wait very long.

"Well, well, everyone finally came." Fury says as he walks into the room, Tony trailing behind him.

"What do you want Fury?" Steve asks, his tone of voice hinting at his frustration, "You keep pushing us away and then sauntering in like nothing happened when you have a problem you need us to fix."

Fury gives a one-eyed glare to Steve, which is returned with a raised eyebrow, "This isn't so much of a problem as it is a mission."

"What do you mean by that?"

Fury reaches over and grabs a remote, clicking on the TV. A red and blue figure pops up, crouched on the edge of a building, surveying New York, "This, is Spider-Man. He is a vigilante originating from, or around, Queens."

Tony crosses his arms, "A vigilante. So what? Why do you need us?" I smack him on the back of his head, "Ow! What was that for?"

"You know what that was for," I growl.

Fury glances at the two of us and gives me a nod, "Moving on. Spider-Man usually helps wherever he is needed, whether that is stopping a hostage situation, or carrying in groceries for the elderly. However, he has been getting more and more on our radar as the months have passed."

Sam pipes up, hoping to clear up some confusion, "Why? It sounds like he's only doing good."

Fury sighs and rubs his forehead, "Why can't you guys just shut up and wait until I'm done with my briefing so that you won't ask questions that I'm about to answer?"

Sam looks at the floor in embarrassment, even though Fury's annoyance is directed towards us all.

"As I was saying, Spider-Man has gotten more on our radar as he has taken down big villains, two of which were supervillains. After those incidents, the power that he possesses was fully brought to our attention and we labeled him a potential threat. I have sent multiple teams of SHIELD agents out to get his identity and all of them have failed. So here I am, resorting to you guys to bring him in."

"Who helped him defeat the villains?" Steve asks during Fury's pause.

"No one." Fury replies.

All of our faces morph into ones of shock, some more obvious than others. I speak up, impressed, "No one? Even with the supervillains?"

"You are correct. Spider-Man took them all down on his own while only causing as much damage as could be expected with a fight like that."

Steve whistles, "Wow."

Fury nods before staring each of us in the eyes, "Your mission is to bring in Spider-Man so that he may become an avenger."

Clint, previously silent, asks, "And what if he doesn't want to come?"

"Do what you have to do. Just don't seriously injure him. And first, do everything you can to bring him in without injury or conflict." Fury says before switching off the TV and walking towards the elevator.

"I expect you guys to succeed where all my best agents have failed. Good luck." He says before the elevator doors close and he disappears from view.

We all sit in silence for a few minutes, just staring at each other before Tony scoffs, "He's just a vigilante, how hard could it be?"

"I agree with Tony," Sam says, "We don't know for sure what happened, but no one could take down supervillains on their own."

"I actually heard that he had a girl help him with one of them. She ended up falling to her death. Spider-Man missed saving her by centimeters," Clint explains, his voice laced with sadness and sympathy.

Everyone stops bickering and turns to stare at him. He shrugs, "What? Do none of you try to learn about what happens in the city around us?"

Steve blinks, "Are you saying that you might know more about Spider-Man than SHIELD? They said that he beat all the villains on his own."

Clint shrugs for the second time, "Well, I guess maybe. Spider-Man helps a lot of people, so when something major happens with him it really gets around for a bit before fading away into rumors or disappearing completely. Didn't you guys even hear about these supervillains? And how he fought and beat the Sinister Six on his own?"

I speak up, "No, not really."

Bruce huffs at himself, "Wow. I didn't realize how out of the loop I was about what happens just around the corner."

"Who are the Sinister Six?" Tony asks, his curiosity getting the better of him.

Clint frowns in thought, "From what I remember the Sinister Six was a group of villains led by a supervillain. I don't remember which one though. The supervillain brought them together so that they could gang up on Spider-Man and bring him down."

Everyone gets caught off guard by that, "You mean that he beat five villains and one supervillain together all by himself?" Bruce yelled.

"From what I remember, yes."

Vision interrupts with his opinion, "I don't think that your information could be correct Clint. Like you said before, they're just rumors now. Even if he did get help from a civilian girl, I have not met anyone who could defeat two supervillains and countless villains without help from another enhanced individual."

"I'm just stating what I remember."

I stretch in my seat before crossing my legs, "Well, what are we going to do about Spider-Man?"

"Maybe we should just approach him and ask?" Wanda offers.

Steve thinks for a moment before agreeing, "I think that's a good idea. Fury said to get him with as little to no conflict as possible. It doesn't hurt to try."

"Maybe we could get his opinion and view on this. Ask why he's turning away all of the SHIELD teams," Clint adds.

"But who should go talk to him?" I wonder aloud.

Wanda stands up from her seat and starts to walk into the kitchen, "Maybe three people max since we don't want to appear threatening."

I slowly nod, "I like that Wanda."

"Same here," Clint states as he raises his hand.

After a second, Steve stands up and claps his hands together, "Okay team, here's the plan. FRIDAY will let us know when Spider-Man is spotted. I'll then go talk to him because I'm the most recognizable person alongside Tony here, who's too hot-headed right now for me to trust him with talking to Spider-Man. Clint and Natasha, you'll come with me. After we see what happens then, we will make a new plan. Does everyone agree?"

A series of "Yes," "Yup," and "Mhmm"s sound throughout the room before we all drift away to do our own thing.

After about two hours or so FRIDAY speaks up, "Spider-Man has been spotted on a building in Queens."

I change into my mission outfit and rush up into the living room, meeting up with Clint and Steve, both having changed as well.

Steve waves us to the elevator, "Lets go have a chat with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man."
