11. What's Sarcasm?

After brainstorming for a bit, I decided to build a mini AI robot that would be able to do everything a nurse in an elderly home can do and more. My plan is that it can help attend to the elderly living in the center at all hours of the day because it won't have to sleep. But doesn't it have to charge you may ask? Well, no. Why? Because I decided that since this was to help others, I was going to go all out. So what did I do? Well, I built my own version of a mini arc reactor so that it can give the AI an endless supply of energy (I did it without anyone seeing of course. So don't tell anyone).

Once I had finished perfecting the part of my project I didn't want anyone to see, I decided to strike up a conversation with the two interns closest to me: Echo and Elaina. They had been chatting for a while, so I felt nervous that I would feel left out. I was completely wrong. They both are so welcoming, and we became instant friends.

By the end of the day, us interns had gotten used to working around each other. Me, Echo, and Elaina chatted and soon we became a well-working machine. Of course, when I was working on something I didn't want anyone to see, I excused myself and went to my own little corner again. They got used to it after I did it a few times, and accepted it once I told them I wasn't doing this because of them.

Flash and Jake got along great and worked together in their own little section of the lab. Jake didn't bully me as much as Flash thankfully, but he could still be a jerk sometimes. Flash enjoyed knocking me over and doing whatever he could to me. Him being around Jake though allowed Jake to keep him under control as much as possible and make sure he didn't cross any lines.

Just being in the same lab as Flash, it was obvious he didn't pass the internship test. Rather than working on anything, he just goofed off, giving extra pains to Jake who had to make sure he didn't accidentally kill himself. Once in a while, Flash would actually be working, doing just enough to make it seem like he was supposed to be there.

Justin, well, is Justin. He withdrew himself and his fancy mannerisms to work in his own little space. Even though when looking at him you wouldn't guess he would get an internship at SI, his work proved that thought process wrong. He had some great ideas and was moving at a very controlled pace.

At the end of the day, I was eons ahead of the other interns. Everyone, excluding Flash of course, had finished brainstorming and was just starting to work on their projects before our time ran out. I, on the other hand, had finished the mini arc reactor and installed it into the completed robot body that I made. Now I just have the AI left. Since it doesn't have to be very complex, I estimated that it would take me about a day.

By the time I had finished everything I could do today, I started to brainstorm ideas for improving my suit and increasing the capabilities of FABAE. I could make it bulletproof... Maybe I could put a mini arc reactor in it for unlimited power, just like I did with the robot. Oh, oh, oh! Then I can charge my phone anywhere I go with the suit.

My eyes widened when a different thought struck me. Wait... Could I use my new access to better tech to find a cure for Harry?

Before I could dive deeper into that thought and get to the bad memories, our time ran out for the day.

After giving a hug to Echo and Elaina, saying goodbye to Jake, giving a respectful nod to Justin, and avoiding Flash like the plague, I headed home.

Currently, I am getting my head bitten off by FABAE about a minor common occurrence. Nothing to worry about.

"Peter! Did you have to go in and get yourself shot?!" FABAE sternly shouts.

I groan, "I had to go in there FABAE. That is my job after all as Spider-Man."

"You've been shot!"

"I'm aware of that FABAE."

"My little baby's hurt!"

"I thought that we already established that I know that I am - wait. Little baby?!"

FABAE somehow manages to give a sniff of acknowledgment, "Of course. Why would you think that you would be anything else?"

"Because I am anything but a baby. And I am not little!" I half shout at her.

"Hmhm. Suuuuurree..." She says.

"Did you just ... did you just sarcasm me? You're an AI! You're not supposed to know how to use sarcasm!"

"What? What's sarcasm?" FABAE sarcastically replies.

"Argh!" I shout out before briefly pausing, "Where did you even learn sarcasm in the first place?"

The reply is immediate, "From you."

"Okay, that is it!" I scream while throwing my hands up in the air, "I am SO regretting installing you in my suit!"

Before she can reply I hear someone shout my alter-ego's name from a good ways away.

"Peter, you're hurt! Be careful," FABAE warns.

"I know, I know. But the bullet passed clean through. I'm almost healed up by now."

After swinging towards the shout, I spot what's wrong. Someone who clearly wasn't thinking decided to go up and rob a bank, taking everyone in it hostage.

After assessing the situation I swing down into the scene.

"Hey, it worked!" A police officer said from behind me.

I turn around just in time to see Greg roll his eyes, "Good job. It's not like he has super hearing or anything. Now go help secure the perimeter!"

"Sir, yes, sir!"

I walk towards Greg, "I'm honestly surprised you've never tried that."

He turns towards me, "Me too. But he doesn't need to know that."

"So what's the situation?"

His face smooths as he goes all business, "We believe there is one perp in the building, standing in the back, just behind the hostages. There are about fifteen hostages in the main lobby. We think. Unfortunately, there's little visibility inside this building so we can't tell much of what's going on. That's really all we know right now."

"Okay," I slowly nod my head in thought, "Okay, I can work with that. Are there any rooms in the back of the bank that the robber can't see?"

"There are two, but only one has a window that can be opened. There's a back door, but it's completely barred from the inside."

"Since the door is barred, which window is the one that can unlatch? We don't want me crashing through windows or breaking down doors and making sound if we can help it."

Greg gives me a proud smile, "Of course. You're finally learning. Come with me."

He takes me around into a little alley that is at the back of the bank. He points to a window pretty high up, that they would have trouble getting to safely, "That's the access point."

"Okay thanks."

Before I can take my second step a hand grabs me and spins me around, making me come face to face with Greg's glare, "Don't you dare get hurt again, you hear me Mister?"

FABAE gives a noise of approval, "I agree with him."

I internally groan. Great. Now I have two people breathing down my neck tonight.

(If I was being honest to myself, I would say that pure happiness swelled up within me because I finally have other parental figures.)

"I can't make any promises," I call over my shoulder as I swing up and latch onto the window.

Opening the window was a piece of cake....not. It seems like the window has not been opened in years, leaving it rusted and unwilling to move. I can use my Spidey Strength, but I don't want to overdo it and end up not only breaking the whole wall I am suctioned onto, but also making any sort of noise the robber can hear.

After way too many grunts of frustration directed towards opening a window, I am finally in the building.

I can hear the robber yelling at the hostages to listen and be quiet. I freeze and subconsciously cock my head, listening to the heartbeats in the building. I'm surprised to hear a lot of them, the majority in the main room of the bank, and another group in the other back room. I think for a second before deciding to get the hostages in the back room out into safety first.

I latch onto the ceiling and crawl towards the closed door of the room the hostages are in. I slowly open the door, it creaking as it shudders open.

"What the..." I hear from the other side.

I hide a smile when I hear one of the hostages mutter quietly, in a way only the person next to him can hear, "That's creepy. Glad I don't have to deal with it."

His neighbor replies just as quietly, "I mean, we are hostages and could die, soooo..."

"I prefer that over having to be the one to check what's out there."

"That's fair." They both fall silent as the guard walks out into the hallway. I drop down on him and knock him unconscious so that he can't alert his friend in the main lobby. I web him to the floor and web his mouth shut, just in case he wakes up before we have finished saving everyone.

"Sorry," I apologize to the unconscious guard before I walk into the room, immediately sighing when I see that there aren't any more guards.

All of the hostages freeze and turn towards me, relaxing in relief when they see that it is me. I put a finger on my lips in the well-known sign to be quiet and whisper, "I need you guys to stay quiet. I'm going to get you guys all out to safety, but the others in the main lobby are still in trouble. If you follow me I can get you out of here."

They nod and start to quietly file out, following me down the hallway towards the barred door. When I get there, I remove the bar across it and reach for the padlock, quietly snapping it in half and pulling it off. I swing open the door very slowly, letting it's creaks fade quietly into the night. I guide all of the hostages out towards the paramedics.

The paramedics rush over to us. Some of the hostages are in shock, others are just starting a panic attack, and two have a bullet wound.

Greg rushes up to me and I give him the lowdown, "There were both hostages in the main room and the other back room. I got the back room hostages out and am going in for the others. I..umm...I don't think anyone but me going in is the smartest decision. You guys didn't even know about the hostages in the back room. So we have no reliable info right now."

Greg sighs, "I think you are right. But," he adds, "If we can come in once you scope it out you need to let us know. You need to have someone there to help you."

"Okay, okay," I agree, "But if you guys can't and somet-"

"Spider-Man," a sadly familiar voice cuts me off, "We need you to come with us."
