"Nurse! Nurse!" Jongho cried, climbing off the bed and looked down at May's still smiling face.

The other boys jumped up at the noise and grouped together to stay out of the way as they wheeled in a large cart with a defibrillator on it. Jongho was pushed to the wall, his hands covering his mouth. Seonghwa rushed over to pull him into their group where they all held onto each other, watching as the nurses tore open her shirt and prepped her.

"Clear!" One shouted. May's body lurched when the shot went through her.

The monitor still let out one long tone.

"One more time." Her body lurched again before falling back limply.

Everyone stared at either her or the heart monitor.

*beep*

*beep*

*beep*

"Heart rate is rising. Heart rate is rising." The nurses said. They brought in an oxygen machine and placed a mask over her face.

Jongho was openly crying now. He wanted to run to her, but the others held him back.

The nurses fussed over May for several more minutes. It felt like hours... but eventually they all sighed, and one turned to the group. "She is stable."

Jongho broke free and ran to her side, holding her hand and bringing it to his mouth.

Then they waited.

And waited.

The next day, their manager came to visit the hospital after receiving Hongjoong's call. The leader filled him in on the little details he could provide, saying her body was rejecting something and that's why shew as here. The manager was understanding and asked to be updated with news. He also gave them a few days off.

May still didn't wake up the following day, but her heart rate remained strong, which gave everyone at least some hope. Her color was returning a little bit as her system accepted the water and the other nutrients they mixed in with it.

On the third day, everyone but Jongho left to get something to eat about midday. They said they'd bring something back for him and he thanked them. He hadn't left her side or let go of her hand. Whenever the boys left, or were sleeping, he'd speak softly into her ear. Telling her how much he loved her, of how he couldn't wait to see her smiling face again, of how proud of her he was for trying to fight through this, of how much he needed her.

He kept whispering, closing his eyes.

"You're so adorable."

Jongho's eyes flew open and he froze when he saw May looking at him, smiling weakly.

"Hey, baby."

Jongho fell into a new wave of tears as he brought her hand to his lips and kissed it over and over. His other hand cupped her face gently, stroking her cheek with his thumb. "How are you feeling?"

"Like shit." She chuckled. "What happened? My chest is killing me."

"You... Your... Your heart stopped. Three days ago."

"Oh." May said, looking up at the ceiling.

"You've been stable though, ever since they came and... and... shocked you."

May didn't speak for a moment, processing the information. Then, to Jongho's surprise, she started laughing. "I'm sorry. I just find it ironic that the thing that started all this, that stupid device, was mainly used to shock me as punishment. And now it's a shock that hopefully saved my life." She looked at him again, a bright smile breaking over her face as tears rolled down her cheeks.

He couldn't help it. He started to laugh to, still kissing her hand.

That's what the boys came back to, the two of them laughing at how absurd this situation was. They were puzzled for a moment, but San and Wooyoung broke the mood by running to the other side of the bed and grabbing her hand or touching her shoulder.

Everyone was so happy to see her awake.

---

The doctor released her after he deemed she was at a passable weight and her vitals hadn't dipped at all. He made her, and the boys, promise to make sure she tried to eat a little more with every meal and to do some physical therapy to build up her strength again.

She kept her word. In the following weeks, she continued to fight and was able to get back to a normal life. Jongho worked out with her every day, supporting her if she got weak and pushing her when he knew he could. The others would join in too, and Seonghwa always made sure she had a well-balanced meal.

Life returned to normal for them in the following months. Ateez was working on releasing a new album, practicing day and night. May did her best to support them, bringing them water and giving advice where needed.

She also worked hard to translate anything that was needed. To take up some of her spare time, she had even gone back to school, wanting to learn more languages to help reach more of the fan base. She loved the feeling of being wanted by the group.

But the best part was ending the day with Jongho. He had moved into her room with her and held her close to him every night.

It was perfect.

And for the first time in her life, May could finally feel peace.
