<1> New Case.

Chapter 1, New Case.

Jason Grace

Jason slowly reached up to his face to slowly push his glasses up his nose as he read the newspaper that he had bought on the way to work earlier in the morning that day. He read the article about the how the police force was doing well with completing every case that was formed. They were very specific with how well they were doing and how they were going to continue doing well. Jason chuckled just as he heard the subway rush into the station before slowing rapidly to let passengers get off and board. But only in a specific window, if you missed your window you'd have to wait for the next subway to board. And in New York people pushed and shoved for things they wanted. Jason being new to the city was just trying to get used to all of the commotion.

Jason sighed as he watched New Yorker's and other people get off the subway leaving him and the others a short opening to board the subway before the doors would close letting no one enter or exit until the next stop. Jason quickly surged forward and boarded in the horde of people accidentally touching and rubbing up against strangers who he would probably never see again. So it was quite awkward being in such tight placed with random people, Jason was often flustered not being used to it since he lived in the country most of his life and was sent to army schools though he never hoped to join. He wanted to be something different. He had other plans in mind than his parents did.

Jason wasn't one of the first to enter so most of the seats were taken. Looking around hoping to rest his feet from walking around the office all day he searched for a seat as he thought about how New York could use better transportation. But Jason knew this was the fastest way to the station. Jason turned his head and found a seat, finally his aching feet could rest then he could go and see his-

Jason was about to sit when he saw an old lady making her way over to the seat also hobbling forward her back hunched over like she had Kyphosis and hadn't been treated for it. Jason stood in front of the seat for a moment watching the old lady stop and try to grab the steadiers above her head which she couldn't reach. Jason sighed and walked over to where she was, "Miss, miss!" He called and the lady stopped to look at him her grey hair ,that was pulled up into a bun under her hat, some of it falling onto her face. "Here, you can have my seat." Jason pointed to it and the old lady smiled before putting a hand over her heart. "Oh, thank you son." She walked over Jason's face turning pink like the pink roses his father's sister grew in her backyard.

The old lady patted Jason on the arm in thankfulness before backing up to the seat and sitting down a sigh of comfort leaving her old lips. Jason smiled in compassion at the elderly lady who looked around the subway cart at everyone who was on it young and old -like herself-. Jason leaned on one of the poles and took out his newspaper from earlier to try to pass the time. The silence that was filled with breathing and the sound of the subway moving along the tracks swiftly soon took over the subway everyone looking on their phones or out the window at the passing concrete walls or looking at newspapers like Jason himself way doing.

"May I see that?"

Jason looked to see the old lady looking at his newspaper with curiosity. Jason had read most of the stuff he wanted to, and the old lady looked like she wasn't too well-off like himself. He could just buy another newspaper if he was so interested in finishing it. Jason shrugged and handed it to her. "You can keep it if you want to." He said with a smile making the old lady smile also. "Thank you young man." Jason was pink from all the names she was calling him but he enjoyed it, it made him think of a grandma he never had. He imagined his grandma would be a good cook, and she knew how to sew, and do yarn things. Jason smiled at the thought.

"Have you heard about the new case the police have acquired?" The old ladies' voice was scratchy like she had a cold, but even through that you could sense the curiosity in it. Jason looked at her and nodded as she glanced from him to the newspaper, "Yes, quite interesting in my opinion." Jason stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Something about a murder and a betrayal between police officers. I think the criminal was an officer once? If I'm correct." Jason said and the old lady nodded her head. "It says that here, Ms. Chase murdered the other police officer's friend and ran."

Jason nodded listening, "She truly did cover up her tracks well though, I'm not sure if the police will be able to find her." she said and Jason snickered. "I'm pretty sure the people in the force will find her within a few days." Jason said with assurance knowing who was on the force. "But the rumors, they say Ms. Chase can change her face even the color of her eyes." This caught Jason's attention making him look at the old woman as she spoke her eyes glittering with excitement. "I've heard stories that after they finished a case, the former police officer would show them what she could do in changing her face and they'd beg her to stop for fear of losing their sanity." The old lady looked like she was in a fantasy.

"That sounds terrifying." Jason said though he didn't believe what the lady had heard, if the story were true he probably would've been terrified. "She's brilliant isn't she?" The old woman asked and Jason sighed, before muttering under his breath "I guess." The old lady nodded as the subway started to slow and telling the passengers where they were stopping. It was Jason's stop.

Jason looked to the old lady and smiled lightly, "I can help you off if you'd like?" He said and the old woman shook her head, "I get off at the next stop deary." Again, the nicknames making Jason's cheeks turn the color of a pink rose. "Alright, have a good day ma'm." He said and she nodded, "And to you young man!" They waved and Jason exited the train before making his way towards the exit to get some fresh air.

He walked past some shops on the street on the way to his destination, he saw a flower shop and he entered before picking out a single unique flower and going on his path again to the building filled with people with blue button-down long-sleeved shirts on.

Jason stepped in front of the police station and sucked in a deep breath fingering the box in his pocket trying his best to gain his confidence. Cause he would need it later that night.

Jason walked inside the station greeting familiar faces since he practically came to the station every other day. He asked around for the woman on his mind before they all pointed towards the "conference room" meaning important things were being discussed. Which also meant Jason would have to wait till the meeting was over to talk to the love of his life. Jason made his way towards the conference room anyways, he'd wait with the flower outside the door for her. As he made his way over the room the door to the conference room opened the woman of his dreams walking out first as she nodded to the chief's words who was behind her.

She walked out and stood to the side as the chief walked out saying goodbye to Jason's dream come true before walking off in the opposite direction his arm around a man with black hair's shoulders.

Jason smiled before making his way over to her and holding out the flower under her face since she was looking down. This action made her look up at him her ever-changing eyes looking into his own electric blue ones. "Piper." Jason said and she lightly smiled, gently taking the unique pink flower from his hand and holding it with all delicacy.

Jason pulled her into a gently hug holding her close to himself lighting up his world every time she touched him. Jason sighed in content being in her arms. Jason hated to but he pulled away and leaned down trying to gently kiss her soft pink lips. Jason got a cold shoulder as Piper turned her cheek to him signalling she was in a bad mood. Jason stood up straight and looked down at her in concern as she rubbed her upper arm in anxiety.

"What's wrong?"Jason asked looking at Piper's face closely examining trying to read her emotions which he was never good at. Then he saw her glassy eyes, glassy eyes led to tears, and tears either meant sadness or happiness, and Jason was pretty sure Piper wasn't happy about things at the moment.

"The new case." Piper said looking anywhere but his face. "I-I've been assigned to it." Piper said and Jason's mind drew a blank. New case? What's so bad about a case? He thought every police officer wished for new cases so what was the dea-

Sudden realization dawned upon Jason, Piper was the one who was betrayed by her best friend who killed her other best friend. "Oh." He said and Piper balled her fists. "They want me to chase after my ex-best friend who killed my other best friend. Plus they're assigning a newbie to help me just because his father paid for him to get on the field for 'proper experience'." Piper used air quotes and Jason sighed seeing her anger boiling inside her.

"I mean- who assigns someone who's mourning the loss of both her best friends to the person that caused the injury?" Piper balled her fists until her knuckles became white. Then she released and walked forward leaning on Jason's chest resting her head right under his. "I just never thought I'd lose both my best friends in one day."

Piper let out a shaky breath "I still can't believe she killed Leo." Piper wrapped her arms around him and Jason looked down at her in compassion. He ran his hand through her choppy uneven hair as he wrapped his other arm around her waist doing his best to comfort the love of his life. "I'm sorry." he said in sympathy before kissing her forehead. He had no idea what sorrow she was going through, and all he wanted to do was being a comfort to her and help her get better.

Jason felt the little box in his pocket move making him sigh, that'd have to wait till later. Piper couldn't handle it right now.

So the two stood in the middle of the police station in silence as they were in one another's comforting arms.
