Chapter 33 Coma
Wei Ying called again.
"Hui Gai?"
The demon appeared, smiling with all his pointy teeth.
"Twice in one day, Master?"
"Let us address that right now. I hate it when you call me that." But his eyes were warm with affection. "Why can't you use my name?"
Hui Gai visibly shuddered.
"I cannot." He looked too serious for Wei Ying to argue.
"Part of my name? My sister used to call me XianXian." He remembered, sadly.
"No."
"Pengyou*?" XiChen suggested.
Wei Ying brightened immediately. The demon considered it.
"Acceptable." He agreed.
"Then, my friend, I have a request to make of you." Wei Ying smiled at him. "Remember, you can always say no."
Hui Gai bowed low. "Pengyou." As if he was testing it out. And then he added, "I would never."
"I wouldn't mind if you didn't want to do something I asked of you. This is another of those tasks." Wei Ying looked at him fondly. "You have never let me down, my friend. I want you to know that I appreciate everything you've done for us, whether by choice or no."
"Rest assured, there is no need for thanks. I see every task as an opportunity to redeem myself. What would you like me to do?" He licked his lips in anticipation.
"My brother is in a coma. Has been for nearly four days, and it doesn't look as if he can wake up on his own. Can you help?" Wei Ying turned to the bed and held his hand. "My brother has never been this sick. It's so strange to see him lying down, like this."
"You want me to enter his mind?" Then he smiled dangerously. "Do you want me to leave anything behind?"
"What? NO! Don't meddle with him! Just wake him up." Wei Ying tried not to scowl. Every time he thought he was getting somewhere with him, the demon had to make a bad suggestion and throw water all over his efforts.
"Fine, fine." Hui Gai replied, disappointedly, but behind his back, he had crossed his fingers.
He turned and stared at the man lying on the bed. This was a prime opportunity, and he wasn't about to let it go. His friend was too nice a person, and the demon decided to be discreet. He chuckled to himself at the idea slowly forming in his mind, then he winked at Wei Ying and vanished.
It was a dark place.
How was he supposed to find the owner of the body in here? He called out repeatedly but there was no answer. He walked forward, or tried to, because while he'd been standing still, the ground had moved, a thick sludge crawling over his feet and keeping him there. It was growing fast, spreading to his knees, and if he didn't do something soon, it was going to take over.
He blasted it with fire and it retreated, but loud moaning echoed in his ears. He heard a voice faintly.
"Whatever you did, don't do it again. He's bleeding!" Wei Ying's voice echoed all around him.
It was a big space; he'd seen it in the flash of light. Too bad there wasn't much in here, he thought with a smirk. This was his mind, after all. If he couldn't blast the black sludge, he had to keep moving. Far, far away, there seemed to be a bright light.
He kept moving towards it, the tiny pinnacle of light becoming his entire focus. Progress was slow as he walked. The tiny light grew as he approached, and suddenly, he found himself in a room filled with white light.
Jiang Cheng was on the floor, tied down with heavy looking ropes. They criss crossed over his body, leaving only his head a little free.
Hui Gai touched the rope and Jiang Cheng screamed.
"Don't! Please! I beg you!"
"Why? What are they?" He sat down cross-legged next to him, suddenly very interested. "I've never seen anything like this before."
"They are my thoughts. Sort of." Jiang Cheng replied, but there was something in the shameful way he looked down.
The demon was piqued. "Tell me more."
"These are my hopes and wishes. But you can't touch them, I-I have to do it." Tears leaked from the corners of his eyes.
"Do what?" Hui Gai stroked one of the ropes closest to him.
Jiang Cheng let out a whimper. "I have to let go of them. By myself."
"Go for it, then." He leaned back, amused.
"It's not as easy as it sounds!" Jiang Cheng snapped.
There it is, Hui Gai thought. He didn't like Jiang Cheng much, especially because of the way he treated his friend. He didn't know the full story, but the snatches he had heard now and again, had given him a low opinion of this man. He was here for one reason, and one reason only. Currently outside of this body.
"I suggest you start." Hui Gai advised. "Otherwise we'll be here all day, oh I forget, it's been four days already. You should get a move on."
"Why don't you get lost?" Jiang Cheng shouted. "I don't need you."
"I would, but I'm here to hurry along the process," he gestured along the length of Jiang Cheng's body. "I'll tell you what. If you don't begin, I'll start pulling them off, one by one."
"WHAT? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!" Fear shone on his face, bleeding through his words.
"I have things to do. Can't spend all day in here, with you. I'm gonna count down from ten..." Hui Gai checked his nails, knowing the effect of his words upon the prone man. He grinned evilly.
"Don't, please?"
"Ten."
"Please!"
"Nine." He looked bored, tail swishing behind him.
"It's not EASY!"
"Whatever. Eight."
Jiang Cheng closed his eyes, face red from effort, and concentrated.
"Seven."
"I'm doing it!"
"Six."
"Shut up!"
"Five."
Jiang Cheng tried with all his might, and one rope, the one around his neck, vanished.
The demon slow clapped. "Well done." He drawled. "Next one. Ten."
Sweat poured off the man lying down, as he panted. His body felt weaker, but it was going to be nothing compared to what thd demon was threatening him with...
"Four."
What? Jiang Cheng realised that the demon had been counting even while he had been lost in his thoughts. With a super human effort, he released another rope.
"Care to tell me what they were?" The demon's eyes glinted red with curiosity.
"None of your business!"
"As you wish. Ten."
"Stop it now!" Jiang Cheng cried out.
"Nine. And no." He gave him an evil smile. "Think of me like your fairy godmother."
"Bastard!"
"Probably." Hui Gai admitted, amicably. "I don't know if we 'do' marriages. Eight."
Jiang Cheng focused and cried out as another rope vanished. He lay there spent, his eyes closed.
So he didn't see the demon take a strand of the rope and tie it around his wrist, grinning maniacally. The whole action was performed so fast, Jiang Cheng lay in his stupor, completely ignorant.
"Last one." Hui Gai cheered him on. "You can do it. Ten."
"I'm going to kill you when I get out of here."
"You can try. Nine." Hui Gai told him, confidently.
Jiang Cheng thought hard. This one would prove to be the most difficult. It was to do with his inner competition with one person. He hadn't examined it in so long, he had forgotten it existed. But he loved his brother. Didn't he?
With a bone chilling scream, he passed out and the last rope vanished.
Hui Gai stood up and clapped himself on his back. Making sure the cord was secure on Jiang Cheng's wrist, he laughed quietly and projected himself out of this body.
He bowed low to Wei Ying. "Pengyou, it is done."
Wei Ying stared at him suspiciously. "He hasn't opened his eyes yet."
Hui Gai stared at the body. He really wanted to laugh. But he controlled himself and only when he was sure he wouldn't give himself away, he looked at Wei Ying.
"The difference is, he's only resting here. He will wake soon, and you shall know that I am a keeper of my word." He stepped forward.
Wei Ying stood up, knowing what he wanted.
Hui Gai wrapped his arms around him and whispered, "Me likey."
