Li XiWang giggled excitedly, watching her father put in the colours one by one.
"This is going to be great!" Wei Ying enthused, adding the final binder.
The pot started bubbling softly, all seven colours separate still.
Wei Ying stirred it with satisfaction.
"How big do you want to go?" He asked the happy child.
"As big as we can. Otherwise there's no point!"
"True." Wei Ying smiled warmly at his young protege.
He added one last ingredient, watching the liquid absorb it.
"Okay, ready?"
She nodded enthusiastically, and held her arms out.
"Remember, concentrate on your breathing. Channel your energy slowly." Wei Ying stood back, proudly.
"Yes father." Li XiWang closed her eyes and focused.
The pot started to churn, bubbles rising higher and higher.
Both innocent people stepped back, frightened.
Uncle Qiren knocked on the door of the Jingshi. He hadn't seen Wei WuXian in a few days and...missed him.
He frowned when there was no answer, so he decided to open the door himself.
There were sudden shrieks and then a small explosion, just as he did so.
Dazed, he looked around the previously spotless Jingshi to see bright colours streaking the walls and a big hole in the roof from which a seven coloured rainbow exploded into the sky.
The entire Jingshi was an explosion of colours, bright splashes covered every single surface; the bed, the walls, the floor. The only thing that was safe was the table, under the steaming pot.
One adult and one child were completely covered in paint. It was dripping to the floor in wet lumps, making terrible squelching sounds.
Uncle Qiren had never heard a noise like that before. He felt his face, hoping that the wetness he was feeling could be tears of joy, but no. His hand came away in a plethora of colours. His mind could not accept what his eyes were seeing. He didn't want to look at himself, in case his greatest fears came true.
XiChen came hurrying to see what the noise was. He looked up and saw crowds gathering, pointing at the Jingshi from far away, not daring to come closer. He ran faster, his heart in his throat, wondering what could possibly be wrong.
And then he looked right up at the sky and saw the rainbow. His feet shuddered to a stop. And then, as if his brain had finally caught up, he was rushing to the Jingshi to see what had happened.
He was not expecting Uncle Qiren to be there. Covered from head to toe in multicoloured gloop, still dripping in wet paint, sloshing as his robes moved, which were anything but the pristine white they must have been when he left his room.
Wei Ying didn't know what to do. "Um, Uncle...how are you? I'm sorry I haven't been to see you lately, I was...um" he stopped speaking when his voice went from normal to something only animals could hear.
He stepped forward and tried to wipe his face with a corner of his sleeve, his hands trembling.
He could not believe what had happened.
"Brother! What happened? Where's Wei Ying?"
Wei Ying closed his eyes at the sound of Lan Zhan's voice.
And then he heard it.
It sounded faint, as though far away, and softly at first. The melodious sound was coming from...Lan Zhan?
By the time a confused Wei Ying opened his eyes, Lan Zhan was clutching his sides, laughing out loud.
Tears streamed from his eyes, and for the first time ever, his face was red. He pointed at Wei Ying, who couldn't help a small smile, but then Lan Zhan saw his daughter, a technicolored mess, standing in a puddle of paint. His laughter was strained at this point, but when he saw Uncle Qiren, he completely lost it.
Lan Zhan huffed and puffed, wheezing and trying to catch his breath.
XiChen led him away and took him to the Hanshi, still giggling.
Then he came back for Uncle Qiren, feeling quite sorry for the old man, who was still in a state of shock.
"Shall we go and have a cup of tea?" XiChen asked him gently. "I'll help you clean up first..."

Of course, the Jingshi had to be fixed and restored to it's former glory. It was decided that Li XiWang would stay with her uncles in the Hanshi while it was being repaired.
Meanwhile, Wei Ying had another bright idea.
Lan Zhan was still turning into a hysterical mess every time he walked past the Jingshi, even after a few days.
And Wei Ying missed his husband so much. They were together, but never alone, and he had a way to fix it.
So that night, he proposed to go camping in the mountains with a tent.
Lan Zhan loved that idea.
He was in such a good mood these days, it was unbelievable.
They set out in the morning of the next day, after kissing their children goodbye and extracting promises to be good - it was the children who made one of their fathers promise this.
The day started off wonderfully. Hot sunshine brightened the day, under the canopy of green leaves, and they walked slowly, hand in hand.
The day of the accident, Lan Zhan had tried to help bathe his husband, but he couldn't see properly due to the tears in his eyes from holding back his laughter.
But at least, Lan Zhan was happy.
Wei Ying had never heard him laugh.
Ever.
He didn't think anyone else had, either.
And now, because he had heard the sound once, he wanted to hear it again. So much.
For now, he contented himself with the feel of the calloused, warm fingers holding his hand as they walked up the mountain path.
This kind of peace was rare and welcome. He closed his eyes, feeling the warm gentle breeze on his face. When he opened his eyes, Lan Zhan was looking at him.
They stopped walking.
Wei Ying was pulled closer, and closer until their lips were so close, he could feel the heat with his own.
He stared into deep golden irises, shivering when they blazed with a molten fire.
Wei Ying put his arms around Lan Zhan's neck, tilted his head and tasted the sweetest nectar of soft lips. He felt big, warm palms against his back, holding him tight.
"Love Wei Ying." Lan Zhan whispered before giving him a chance to speak, and kissing him again.
"I love you so much, Lan Zhan." Wei Ying whispered against his lips.
Their hearts were bursting with happiness and joy.
"I...I would like to make a request." Lan Zhan said, his lips hardly daring to move.
"For me?" Wei Ying asked delightedly.
"Mn."
"Lan Zhan!" Wei Ying held his face, his fingertips brushing over high cheekbones. He kissed him again, just because he could. And wanted to. "I would do anything for you."
Lan Zhan led him to a spot on the road where the sunlight was not so concentrated, but still warm.
"You can say no." He looked down.
Wei Ying lifted his chin with a finger, smiling because shy Lan Zhan was so cute.
"Never." He whispered. "What would you like me to do?"
Excitement flared, hot and wild, before it was hidden under uncertainty.
"Lan Zhan...you can ask me anything, tell me anything." Wei Ying took his hand and his warm palm against his own chest. "This is yours. I am yours. There is nothing I wouldn't do for you."
The conviction in his voice must have convinced the Jade, because his ear tips burned brightly.
Oh. So it was something... special, he wanted.
Wei Ying's mind filled with so many possibilities, he almost missed what he said.
"I want to see your wings." Lan Zhan said, quietly.
In that moment, a little bird chose to sing it's heart out.
Wei Ying moved his fingers, but Lan Zhan stopped his hands, kissing each finger, one by one.
"I...I want to do it."
Wei Ying dropped his hands immediately.
"Go on, my love."
They both watched the slender pale fingers drift over the folds of his red robes, gently caressing the soft fabric until they reached his belt.
Wei Ying held his breath as those expert fingers undid the ties and let it drop.
Neither cared where it fell.
Wei Ying could not look away from those beloved eyes, so intensely filled with emotion. Lan Zhan did not look away, for his fingers knew this body better than his eyes.
Calloused tips touched bare skin, drifting up ever so softly, across the shoulders, smooth to the touch.
Wei Ying held himself in check, knowing how important this was.
Lan Zhan never asked for anything.
He felt humbled that there was something he could give him. And grateful.
His robe fell with a whisper onto the ground. Wei Ying trembled, the light breeze raising the tiny hairs on his body, his chest now completely bare.
His mouth felt drier than a desert.
Now, Lan Zhan let his eyes drift, drinking in the sight of this glorious body.
His eyes lingered on the contours of his collar bones, and took a southern path. He let his feet move slowly to stand behind Wei Ying.
"Please." His lips were warm, resting between his shoulder blades.
Wei Ying had more control now. And he remembered that he had to tell him something important. But this moment, was all for Lan Zhan.
Ever so gently, he unfurled his wings together, hearing an intake of breath.
The breeze stilled. In his mind, the birds became silent, and he waited.
The first touch skimmed over the top ridges, which turned into gills under water.
Wei Ying felt a weight in his chest, because while he knew that Lan Zhan had already accepted this new body, Wei Ying had the smallest of doubts in the darkest place of his mind.
Here they were, out in the open, he was laid bare in front of his husband, with all of his insecurities on display. It was hard.
So when soft, hot lips touched the super sensitive skin, Wei Ying shuddered. Lan Zhan placed his warm hands just under his ribs and settled his racing heart.
"My Wei Ying...you are beautiful." A kiss was given where his wing met his shoulder blade, and then another on the other side. He continued to worship those transparent wings, shimmering with an iridescent glow, one side at a time.
"Wei Ying!"
Lan Zhan was standing in front of him now, shocked to see tears falling from Wei Ying's eyes.
Wei Ying had been lost to his thoughts, was now startled. His eyes jerked open, just before he was held impossibly close.
"I did not mean to hurt Wei Ying." Lan Zhan's voice was flooded with regret.
"I-I'm not hurt, Lan Zhan." Wei Ying said softly. "I'm incredibly grateful...and happy...and my heart is so full right now...and I don't know where to put how I'm feeling."
Lan Zhan wiped his tears before kissing his damp cheeks. He held his hand and put it on his own chest.
"Wei Ying can put it in here." He smiled and picked up his robes.
Wei Ying withdrew his wings and put his clothes on.
