Chapter 56 The Gift

These days for Wei Ying passed by in blissful harmony. He had never felt so relaxed and so, he could be forgiven for forgetting about something small but nevertheless, important. However, he was about to be reminded.

The day had started off wonderfully with a sneaky visit to Wen Ning without telling Lan Zhan because, well, duties, and sometimes, it was nice to give in to his rebellious streak, even in this small way.

Wen Ning had bashfully shown him his new crocus patch, and the few daffodils he had coaxed into life in his new garden. Wei Ying was reminded of the lotus pool back in the Burial Mounds and the fact that not all the memories associated with that place were bad.

He managed to sneak back in, although was nearly caught by an unaware Lan Zhan, whom he grabbed by the arm and took to visiting the bunnies. Spring was in the air and Wei Ying felt that surprising happiness grow in his heart at the dappled sunlight, warming his face.

So when he fell asleep, drunk on the peaceful domesticity of eating dinner with his husband and then reading together sitting in his lap (still favourite place), he was not prepared for the dream.

The familiar mist parted and Wei Ying could not help but groan, wondering what they wanted now. Sure, there was some curiosity mixed in there, but on the whole, he felt a little apprehension.

He Xiang Gu danced towards him, smiling happily and twirling her lotus. Next to her, far more regal and just as beautiful, the Queen mother walked elegantly and dignified.

He bowed first in greeting. He Xiang Gu ignored that and kissed his cheek. Wei Ying blushed and moved significantly slightly away from her.

"Sorry," the Queen mother said, noticing. "She forgets about personal space sometimes."

But He Xiang Gu was looking at him a bit differently and suddenly grabbed his wrist, checking his pulse. Uncomfortable with too much physical contact, Wei Ying fake smiled at her and got his arm back.

"We are here to thank you, Young Master. You performed a fine service for us. We wish to give you something in return." The Queen mother continued, as if nothing had happened between them.

"No need," Wei Ying found himself saying. "I felt the same way."

"Is there nothing you want, or need?" She asked, doubtfully.

Wei Ying was reminded of a situation that lurked in the back of his mind. "Actually, I would like your advice."

"We can help with anything!" Enthusiastic input from the touchy one.

"My grandfather is still in spirit form, refusing to leave my grandmother. She can't see him though, and I got the feeling that she's still quite lonely. Is there a way we can fix this?"

"Oh, definitely!" He Xiang Gu beamed at him. "You already have the cure."

"I do?" He thought hard about it. "Do you mean this?" He pulled out the Soul Stone that he remembered he wanted to give back to her.

"You should gift that to your husband," she told him. "I have another, but I don't mean that. Do you remember the packet of seeds in the box with the Yangsui?"

"Ah! Yes, what about it?"

"Give it to your grandmother."

"And this." The Queen mother opened a pouch from her sleeve and pulled out an exquisite little bell. "Whenever she rings this bell, she will see what she wants to."

"You are too kind." Wei Ying was just bowing in thanks when they were interrupted.

Eight men dressed in red and gold silk brocade ran towards them, four on each side. They held bugle horns, which were immediately put to their lips and blown.

"Oh dear," the Queen mother said in distaste.

"Get ready!" He Xiang Gu said. "Remember, try not to tell him about us. He won't like it."

Wei Ying was about to ask who, when the answer presented himself.

The Jade Emperor strode forth, eyebrows clenched in anger, fists shaking.

So much for thinking he'd never find out, Wei Ying thought, and braced himself.

"You! You dare to come back, after what you did?" He pointed aggressively at him. "Where's my mirror?"

"Warded and put in a safe place." Wei Ying answered calmly.

"I want it back! Where did you find it? And who-" he looked at the two ladies present, "helped you?"

Wei Ying saw He Xiang Gu step slightly behind him, gesturing with a flat hand waving horizontally across her throat.

"We have many books in the GusuLan clan library." He replied, which was not a lie exactly...

"You mean to tell me that my mirror, with the knowledge that only we knew," he looked at the ladies again, pointedly, "is written in a book? That you have access to?" Spittle was flying everywhere.

"There is much information in those books." That was as vague as he could be, and true.

"Why did you do it? You have no right to interfere." The Jade Emperor started pacing.

"Well, to be fair, because you're all about that, no one told me not to do it. I actually had no idea you felt so strongly about it."

The Queen mother stepped up to him and anxiously put her hand on his arm. "There, there, dear. Perhaps it was an honest mistake. And do you really want it back?" She turned him around and slowly led him away. "I always thought it was stressful for you, a burden. Now that it's gone, we don't have to worry about it."

He Xiang Gu waved at Wei Ying in a shooing motion.

Seconds later, he opened his eyes. Lan Zhan was standing next to the bed, a tray of food in his hands and surprise on his face that Wei Ying was actually awake.

Wei Ying sat up and kissed him.
"We have to visit my grandmother."
