Wangji's Rock Session
Wangji sat at his table in the Jingshi, his posture rigid as his fingers glided across his guqin with a flourish. The notes were clear and concise as they filled the room with their tranquillity. He effortlessly strummed an uplifting chord ascension with his eyes closed.
His sharp features were lovingly illuminated in the warm candlelight.
The wind blew in from his open window, making his forehead ribbon flutter in contrast to his silky raven locks. The smell of mist was carried in. Wangji deeply inhaled the calming scent.
The wind picked up as did Wangji's pace. A small pile of talismans by the cabinet on the window were rustling and moving, threatening to stray from their place on the surface.
Wangji paid no notice as his eyes were still closed. He continued strumming the strings as delicate notes reverberated throughout the Jingshi.
With a strong gust, the talismans flew dramatically up in the air. Wangji opened his eyes and watched irksomely as they all swirled around in a sort of lame tornado in the middle of his room.
In a sudden flash, two talismans collided with each other and fell directly on his guqin. Wangji cautiously moved back as a rather ominous looking red light enveloped his prized instrument.
The light was gone as quickly as it appeared, and nothing seemed to be wrong.
Was that it? Wangji thought as he eyed up his qin. It looked the same, and he couldn't sense anything odd coming from it.
Deciding to finish his song and just clean up afterwards, he sat back down and plucked a string apprehensively.
However instead of the peaceful note of a qin, a loud scratchy twang that shook the inside of his skull filled the air.
Wangji's eyes widened in shock. That. That was NOT how it was supposed to sound.
Again, he plucked a string and another crazy sounding note came out. Wangji had never heard anything like it. It was echoing and shrill but also had such clarity and had a oddly satisfying ringing to it. The sound lingered in the air and Wangji felt the urge to try and play again.
He sat there looking rather indecisive.
Does he just leave it and hope nothing else happens? That didn't sound like a good idea.
Should he try to fix it somehow? Maybe if he changed the strings, it would go back to normal. Something told him that wasn't the case.
But there was something rather alluring about that sound, something that made him want to hear it again, in every pitch it had to offer.
Just one song couldn't hurt, right?
Sitting down he plucked the strings, deciding to play Lover's Bouquet. It was a very fast paced and energetic song the children of Caiyi Town will play on leaf flutes.
He started out with the iconic first ten notes that almost everyone in Gusu knew. Up up down up up, down down, up up up.
Wangji never usually played folk songs, but then again, Wangji's qin didn't usually sound like this.
However, with such a strange sound such as this, it now sounded...
Well, there was no other way Wangji could put it, despite his eloquence.
It sounded freaking awesome!
A surge of adrenaline flowed through his veins as he made the bold decision and started going freestyle. He found himself unconsciously bobbing his head to the beat as he did a complex chord ascension.
The faintest of smiles ghosted his face as his body started moving on its own, his fingers moved at light speed as he strummed, the time becoming more complex with each passing note. He was giving his fingers a run for their money as he broke out into a exhilarating solo.
Doing something quite unexpected, even to himself, he picked up his qin and held it to the side as he kept on strumming, his feet doing a tiny energetic shuffle across the mahogany floorboards.
He slowed his pace ever so slightly, making the beat sound more sensual and a bit seductive as he focused on the bass.
If anyone walked in they would probably pass out from pure shock at he sight. The illustrious, prim and proper Second Jade of Lan, was currently making insane sounds come out of his guqin and moving his feet to the beat.
Another gust of wind came through the open window and blew his hair as he put all of his emotion into the strings.
With a final flourish and a high pitched trill, Wangji ended the song with a grand finish as he dramatically strummed up and held his arm to the air, his fist clenched in triumph.
He took in a deep breath as he could feel beads of sweat dripping down his forehead. His heart was hammering away in his chest and he could feel his blood being pumped around his body.
He ignored the throbbing in his hands as another tiny smile graced his face. However it didn't stay on his features for long as he heard a small shuffle and a creak of a floorboard.
Slowly turning around, filled to the brim with dread, he was now face to face with his brother who was standing in the door frame.
Xichen's lips were pressed into a thin line as as his eyes were owlishly wide and his eyebrows were raised so high that they almost disappeared under his forehead ribbon.
The two didn't say a word for a few seconds as neither of them moved an inch.
"Don't tell Uncle." Wangji finally managed to get out, still holding his power pose. Although now it looked more awkward than powerful.
Xichen just fixedly nodded, and then a grin went across his face.
Not saying anything, Xichen reached into his robes and pulled out Leibieng and waved it around enticingly, as he tilted his head a little.
Wangji felt the smile go right back on his face as Xichen excitedly scrambled to close the door and place a silencing talisman on it while Wangji quickly shut the window.
And so, neither Jades of Lan slept that night, as the Jingshi was filled with the sounds of a awesome rockin' session.
