It was L's 12th birthday when he meet Beyond, L's birthday was just a few days after A's death, so the mood around Wammy's was a bit down, which L could tell when he saw Beyond was just sitting on the floor by himself.

They had never actually talked or introduced themselves to one another, and L took this as his chance to get to know one of his futures successors. He walked up to Beyond, who he only knew as B.

"Hello I'm L, and you are B correct?"
"My name is Beyond Birthday, and yours is...L Lawliet."

L's eye went wide with shock, how did he know his name? His full name, he never said it, ever. L sit down in his hunched over pose and bit the tip of his thumb. Before L could question Beyond how he knew his name, the boy spoke.

"It's your fault his dead."
"I beg your pardon?"
"It's your fault A is dead."
"And how is it my fault he committed suicide?"
"It just is."
"I'm 12 years old, how could I be the fault of someone's life they themselves chose to take?"

Beyond didn't speak again, he turned his head and picked up a jar of jam he had sitting next to him on the floor and started eating straight out of it with his hands.

"One day L...one day I will best you, but not at being a better detective, that I could never do, but I will be best you, just you wait and see, one day."
"What brought this on?"
"Lets just say A needs vengeance against the death you brought over him."

L couldn't quite understand what Beyond was getting at, but he didn't pay much attention to it. Instead he just walked away, he didn't want to say around a puzzle he couldn't crack.

-One year later-

L was told that B could no longer be one of his successors, and when L question why, he was told the Beyond had ran away. L couldn't understand why Beyond would ran away if he had wished to be better then himself, but he preferred not think about it, cause it was another puzzle he could not solve.

It was a long time before L saw Beyond again.
