Chapter 35

"Maddie?" Michael's voice rang through my head. I was in a lot of shock to say the least. I had a million things running through my mind and I couldn't decide if they were good or bad. My jaw had dropped slightly at the news and I finally was able to choke out a few words.

"Why?" I breathed out, looking from my hands into Michael's eyes that had brightened. I shook my head, still letting all of the 'what if's' go through my head. "Why would she ever give up her promotion for me?"

"She hasn't told you anything, has she?" He chuckled, wrapping his arms tighter around me.

"No. Nothing." My eyes widened, seeing as there was clearly more to the story than just not moving.

"Kim is still going on the promotion, they were just able to relocate her closer." He cleared his throat, letting himself speak louder. "That's why she called to tell you that she was delaying her flight for a week. She nearly gave me her ticket, then she decided packing up everything in this house and moving it to your other new one would be a better idea."

"Other new house? You mean I'm not going back home?" My mind was registering these new ideas back and forth as they were being thrown at me, it was like they weren't even happening.

"Well, technically, no." He admitted as he nodded his head to the side. "It's just the same area. You'll be about 25 minutes from where you used to be." He glanced back down at me, noticing I still looked a little shocked. "Well?" He question, giving me a half smile.

"I don't know what to think." I stumbled over my words, truly not knowing what to think. Obviously, I was very happy. I could reunite with my best friends, my mother, and Michael and live there happily. Yet on the other hand, I was beginning to look forward to this new adventure in this big city with Cas, but in all honesty this side of the country wasn't exactly me.

"Think about this." Michael mumbled, dragging my attention towards him again after being distracted one too many times. Once I caught the gleam in his eye I felt his fingertip under my chin, pulling me in for a sweet kiss. I had missed the feeling of kissing him, so I had taken advantage of the moment and deepened it for a moment then pulled back just barely.

"I think it's a good choice." I faintly said, letting a smile grow across my lips which Michael had leaned into once again. He sat up, still attached to me, and let me sink further down into the cushions. Eventually, he was hovering over me as he supported himself with one arm and one was scooped under the small of my back. I was lazily playing with hairs on the back of his neck and was disappointed when he broke away earlier than I had expected.

"You should probably call your mom, let her know that your surprise came." He told me, removing his hand from my back and tucking my falling bangs away. I grabbed his hand from the side of my face and interlocked my fingers with his own.

"What surprise?" I asked, not thinking that there could be any of a bigger surprise than Michael popping up at my front door. He raised hie eyebrows at me, indicating that he wa actually the surprise, well more of what he just told me, but you get it. "Oh! Wow, okay, I knew that." I exclaimed. "Look at me go." I giggled, watching Michael's smile grow from above me.

"Goodnight." He yawned, putting all of his weight onto me, earning a groan from me.

"Michael." I whined as Michael's body weight put even more pressure on my chest, making it hard to get my words out. He mumbled a few words and the vibration from it tickled against my chest. "It's only 5." I stated, squinting my eyes at the clock in the kitchen.

"It's midnight somewhere." He said, just barely audible. I rolled my eyes as a yawn followed his words. I understood that his road trip probably caused him to be exhausted, but I was on an adventure kick. I wanted to get up ad do something.

"I don't think that's the right saying." I chuckled. I raked my fingers unconsciously through his hair, I swear this kid was closer related to a small animal than a human being. I let him enjoy his few minutes of peace, even though I was desperately wanting him to sleep on the actual sofa with out me under him.

Michael and I had a lot of moments like these, silence from unspoken words surrounded around us as we laid in just each other's company. What I liked about it so much was that usually one of us were either annoyed or agitated, in the case I was itching to go out and do something so I was a little fidgety. But it showed that we were willing to sacrifice our own comfort and needs just for a little moment of shared happiness. This one was particularly important since we went from having these multiple times a day to stopping for 2 weeks, then it coming back. It wasn't a weird feeling, it was definitely the right feeling, but maybe like it was the first time all over again.

Michael suddenly picked his head up, looking to his left then to his right then back at me. He looked a little frazzled since he had the weirdest look on his face and I had properly messed up his hair.

"How long was I asleep?" He asked, his voice deeper than I expected.

"I didn't even know you were asleep, but at most 10 minutes." I answered. I scooted myself over on the couch as Michael was trying to roll off my and squish next to me on this sofa.

"We're way too big for this couch." He muttered once his grip was securely around my torso. The way he could switch from being grown up and mature to a little kid in a matter of seconds was impeccable. He nuzzled his head into me clearly getting comfortable once I noticed his legs locking mine.

"I want to do something." I said plainly. I looked down at him and half smiled at the sight of his tall frame twisted with my smaller one.

"We are doing something." He began drawing small circles on my exposed hip that he moved my t-shirt from. I tensed under him, nearly forgetting that that was one of my favorite things he did.

"No, I want to go out." I explained. He finally sat up and unattached himself from me. I had been in the same position the whole time and let Michael work his way around me to get himself comfortable.

"Well where do you want to go then?" Michael questioned as he left the couch. I hadn't actually though about what we could go and do, but I think really anything but being in this empty house for the rest of the night would be better. I sighed and got up to follow Michael to the kitchen where he was pouring himself a drink.

"I'm not exactly sure, maybe just a drive down town would be fun. You know, just to add onto the ongoing list of places we've driven to with no particular reason." I shrugged my shoulders as the idea fell out of my mouth. I grabbed a stool from under the bar, one similar to the one in my original home.

"Don't sit on that." Michael said with ease. He glanced up at me once then back down at the cup that he was pouring into.

"Why?" I snickered. He set the container down and peered up at me with an annoyed look. I was constantly asking questions and whenever he told me not to do something and I asked why he gave me the same glare every time.

"The stool has a leg that's shorter than the rest. Sit on it and you'll fall right off." He explained. My attention turned to the foot of the chair I was about to sit on and he was right, it was just odd to me how he noticed that.

"How did you even see that?" I let out a laugh, seeing that his find was funny to me.

"Who couldn't? Jeez, Maddie. Are you blind?" He taunted. I stuck out my lip as I was not taking his teasing too well. He half smiled and walked over to me, draping is arms over my shoulders and placing his chin on top of my head.

"You know, I actually never thought you'd come back." He confessed. I grabbed his hands in mine and spun myself around to face him.

"And why's that?" I asked quietly, switching between his eyes.

"I don't know." He sighed as his cheeks faintly flushed. He looked down at our hands that seemed to tie perfectly together. "I just figured you'd find someone better."

I tightened my grip on his hands which caused him to look up at me. Usually it was Michael making me feel small and vulnerable, but now it was him. I knew he had this constant worry, an inner insecurity, but I didn't think he'd actually believe that it was a possibility.

"Now why would you think that?" I laughed, shaking my head.

"I'm pretty lame." His tone turned more playful which lifted a weight off my shoulders.

"So am I, but that doesn't change anything now does it?" I told him. He let go of my hands, pulling me into a hug. Michael had nearly a whole head over me and he loved that. He took advantage of it, planting a kiss on the top of my head.

"I love you so much." He said as he tugged me closer to him.

"I love you more." I mumbled into his chest, taking in a deep breath and letting it out shortly after.

-

"Remind me again why I let you drive?" Michael asked. He unbuckled his seat belt and turned back to me.

"Because this is my rental car and you were tired." I answered back, putting emphasis on the word 'my' just to let him know he didn't really have a choice anyways.

"Alright, I'm just happy we got here in one piece." He looked out the windshield and to the dark and empty field.

"Just get out."

I'd taken us to this huge recreational park, one that was used for baseball and soccer games for younger kids. I don't exactly know why I thought this would be a fun place to take him to, but I was willing to go anywhere and we could somehow turn this into some wild adventure. The park hadn't been used in a while do there was no one there except for a few kids on the playground right outside of the area.

It was around 7 o'clock and the sun was starting to go down so it had been the perfect temperature. Michael and I were also night owls, so being here was pretty entertaining for the both of us.

I shut my door and locked it, looking up only to find that I had already lost Michael. I peered around the hood of my car since there had been scenarios where he was crouched down on the other side in attempts to scare me, but he always failed.

I walked along the cement pavement with my hands shoved in my pockets as I had guessed that Michael was already down at one of the multiple baseball fields which is where I had parked right in front of.

"Gotcha!" Michael yelled as he gripped my waist and threw me over his shoulder, causing me to scream out louder than I had expected.

"Michael Clifford!" I yelled, hitting my fists on his back. "That was not funny!" I said as he kept on walking to God knows where. He ignored my fighting and continued on his path. We were passing every single field in silence and by the time we reached the very end, the sky was nearly dark.

He suddenly put me down from off his shoulder to which I still wasn't amused. I shot him a glare, crossing my arms over my chest.

"You look so cute when you're annoyed with me." He grinned, walking past me and grabbing my hand. I mocked his words to myself and let him take me to the gate that allowed entrance to the baseball field. I didn't question as to why we were actually going out here, but he always had an idea in mind.

I took off my shoes before going in since the red dirt wasn't going to rub out of the white very soon, or at all actually. I stepped into the dry and slightly overgrown grass, seeing as it hadn't been well taken care of.

"Hey Maddie!" Michael shouted from the plate that the pitchers threw from. I watched him do some ridiculous pretend throw, it was quite obvious that he was messing around. "Imagine me a baseball player." He giggled, walking towards me as I was standing on home base.

"I bet you'd be the best bench warmer on the whole team." I replied, kicking the dirt towards him. I gave him a small smile as he rolled his eyes.

"That's really accurate." He said as he rolled up the sleeves of his white t-shirt. "What if-" Before he finished his thought we both looked up to the sky, seeing that we both felt tiny water droplets dropping onto our skin. We simultaneously looked back at each other with confused looks since neither of us knew about the weather.

"How many times have I got caught in the rain with you?" I asked as the drops started falling faster. He shook his head at me, knowing he thought the same thing too.

"Not enough."

He took advantage of the moment and quickly wrapped me into him, making even more soaked than I was. I let out a squeal, not expecting the sudden cold. I struggled as I tried to pry him off of me, but that resulted in him letting go unexpectedly and I stumbled backwards only to fall right onto the damp ground.

"Michael!" I shouted over his loud laughter.

"You're the one that let go!" He yelled back, not even trying to contain himself. He reached out an offering hand, which I decided was only good to take if I pulled him down with me. He tumbled down right to my side, sending red dirt in my direction.

"Now we're even." I huffed out. Just as I was about to start wiping the mud from my hands, Michael grabbed my hips and pulled me onto him without warning. I had a leg on either side of him and my hands were stuck under my chest and on his from supporting my impact. I opened my eyes and sat up, hitting his knee on my back from where he had it propped up.

"Oh God." I mumbled, looking down at my hands on his white t-shirt. I lifted them slowly, seeing two perfect red hand prints on his chest. My jaw dropped and laughter started falling from my laugh once he looked down.

"Ha ha, very funny." He said sarcastically. Before I was able to fully take in his expression since I was distracted by my own amusement, I jumped at the sudden feeling of a pair of hands hitting my butt. I stopped laughing and looked down at Michael's smug face, suddenly realizing what he had just done.

I stood up yet kept my feet planted on either side of him. I looked over and down my shoulder, seeing a pair or red hand prints on the back of my jeans that was already washing off from the rain. He moved out from under my legs and stood up.

"That was so sly." I chuckled, removing the hairs that were stuck to my face from the rain. His hair was stuck to his forehead as well, but he wasn't the one to be picky about those types of things.

"It's raining." He stated, half smiling at me. "Do you want to get back home?" His head turned to the side a little as he took obvious notice in my clothes that were clinging to me.

"Yeah." I smiled back, letting him wrap an arm around my waist as we ran back to my car. It was incredible how whether or not I end up with Michael in my future, in ten years time I'll be telling this exact story to my husband and kids. The only factor that will change is if the man experienced it himself.
