Chapter 4
Your pov.
We got home and I started unloading the rabbits and putting them into the hutches. It was a tight fit since we were running out of room. For some unknown reason, instead of releasing the rabbits into the wild somewhere, we just kept them like they were pets (or at least that's how I treat them). The rabbits liked me the best for reasons unknown to me, maybe because I let then out of their hutches and have a little playtime with them. It must get cramped spending all day in those hutches and by playing with them, they have a chance to exercise all that energy, making them easier to handle.
As soon as I reached the top of the stairs going down to the basement, grandpa ran up behind me and covered my eyes.
"Your surprise isn't ready yet Duckling, just wait in your room and Gromit will fetch you when it's ready."
I rolled my eyes and smiled as he closed the door to the basement. I think I might be a little old for these parties but grandpa still seems to love throwing them so I guess I won't ruin his fun. Entering my room I sauntered over to Luma's cage and placed her on the floor to hop around. Luma is the one rabbit I decided to keep upstairs as an actual pet. We met on a job, instead of trying to hop away, she jumped right into my lap, I guess she had lost her mother so decided to keep her and take care of her. Sure I loved all of the rabbits and I consider them to be my little friends but I've had luma since she was a tiny baby so we had a special connection. She is now two years old and completely healthy, she's a black floppy bunny with a teal bow tied loosely around her neck.
Luma had finally fell asleep when someone knocked on the door. She immediately sprang to life and hopped around in circles near the door. Sometimes I wonder if she thinks she's a dog, well no matter, she's still my baby bunny. I grabbed her roaming ball (a chinchilla ball but a little bigger) and placed her inside. She was able to roam around the house but I didn't want her getting stepped on by accident. When I opened the door, nothing was there but a long ribbon with a sticky note saying "Follow me." I made my way through the hall and downstairs, gathering the ribbon along the way. The ribbon eventually led me to the dining room, which was filled with steampunk decorations. Since I have been around inventions and machines my whole life, steampunk sort of became my style. Carrying all kinds of tools around has now become an odd habit of mine. My style wasn't too weird, just a bunch of oversized/ loose shirts (grandpa likes to call them pirate shirts), leggings, lace up knee high boots, and a pair of goggles (for bit of personal flair). I always have preferred oversized clothing because I've always been on the pudgy side and those tiny girl clothes are tight and uncomfortable.
The dining room was completely beautiful, decorated with gears, nuts and bolts, and cogs. All painted (f/c). Grandpa and Gromit were nowhere to be seen, which was very confusing. Suddenly, I felt myself being lifted and spun around. I knew it was grandpa and I let out a loud squeal and laughed as he hugged me into his chest. I smiled as this moment made me remember a sweet memory.
(Flashback time :3) 3rd person pov
It was Zero's 6th birthday and she was extra hyper that day, at the moment, there was a major game of hide and seek going on. Gromit rolled his eyes and went back to reading his book as he felt Zero crawling under the chair he was currently sitting on then swiftly (but not so gracefully) moved to under the dining room table.
"Where are u my little monster?"
Wallace asked in a sing-song tone as he looked for his mischievous granddaughter. He could hear her little giggles but couldn't pinpoint her location, Zero had always been a good hider even when she was just a toddler. He looked over at Gromit who jerked his thumb toward the dining room, at least giving him a slight clue as to where she was. Wallace slowly tiptoed toward to the table.
"Where are you ya little rascal, I'm coming to get you!"
He quickly looked under the table, only to find that she wasn't there. He hummed in confusion, the dining room table had been her usual spot to hide in, if not there then where was she? He slowly peeked into the kitchen.
Wallace was thoroughly enjoying this time with his granddaughter, but if he could wish for anything more, it would be for Zero to start talking again. He was already gratful that she was happy again and he wouldn't dare push her for more but it was always a silent wish for him. But he wouldn't want to force her to talk if she really didn't want to, her happiness came before anything else in his eyes. He continued his little search when he heard little shuffles coming from the bottem cabinet.
"Where is the little birthday girl hmm? I'm going to gobble her up when I find her."
He heard the sound of her giggles and quickly turned around to find Zero trying to sneak out of the cabinet. She squeaked and tried to make her escape but lady luck wasn't on her side. Wallace fairly quickly scooped her up and she yelped in pure joy as he blew raspberries into her cheek. Gromit smiled as he brought out the cake and started lighting the big 6 shaped candle as Wallace placed Zero on the chair as he started to sing.
(End of flashback.) Back to reader's pov
"Are you alright Duckling?"
Apparently my trip down memory lane had left me zoning out for a bit. I reassured him as I sat down while Gromit lit the candles. I blew them out after they sang (well it was mostly just grandpa but Gromit did some overdramatic jazz hands so I'll give him credit.) I was about to get up when grandpa held up a finger and scurried off to the kitchen. I was a little thrown off guard, we usually did presents and stuff like that in the living room while The Cheese Files (grandpa's favorite show) played in the background so I didn't know what to expect. About a minute later, grandpa came back out with his hands behind his back.
"Close your eyes and hold out yours hands Duckling."
He noticed my confused face.
"This year's present is extra special this year."
I shrugged and closed my eyes, then what felt to be a small box was placed into my hands.
"Okay now open."
I opened my eyes and looked down, it was a (f/c) box wrapped with a lacey (s/f/c) bow with a nametag saying.......from mom.
"Your mother had me make this gift for you when you were first born and then wait until your lucky 17th to give it to you so this gift is very special."
Curiously I opened the box, inside was a necklace. There was no jewel but a small silver ball attached to a thick felt-like necklace. usually I wasn't a big fan of wearing jewelry but when I lifted said jewelry out of the box, it made a small jingling sound, like a fairy was trapped inside. Underneath the necklace was a little card, it was old card that was lavender with a pair of baby blue ballet shoes on the front. the card had a little message inside.
To my shining star,
Constant as the stars above, always know that you are loved.
And my love shining in you will help you make your dreams come true .
Reach for the stars, there is no limit.
The world is your galaxy, and the people in it.
Your galaxy has no end so live it.
~Mama
I hadn't noticed that there were tears rolling down my face until grandpa had gently wiped them away with his finger. I gave him the card so he could read it. While he was reading Gromit gently nuged my shoulder. I looked over and he also had a box, I opened to find a little windup caterpillar, I couldn't resist these little toys so I took it and gave Gromit a hug as a thank you. We broke from the hug as grandpa gently put the necklace on me, making it jingle once again in the process.
"Guess I'll have to start calling you Tinkerbell. In my opinion, that nickname suits you perfectly."
I look up at him in confusion.
"Well for starters she doesn't talk but she makes a jingling sound. She loves to tinker and fix things, much like you do. And finally, she's small and cute, just like you."
That last statement made my whole face go red, I wasn't really used to being called cute so it almost always catches me off guard. He chuckled and patted my head before we all got up and headed to the living room for some relaxation after a long day. Grandpa sat in his arm chair, Gromit in his rocking chair and me in my oversized beanbag chair.
"Nearly time for our program isn't it?"
Gromit was about to get up and switch on the tv when grandpa stopped him.
"No no, don't get up. Now is the perfect time to test my new remote control device."
Grandpa pressed a button on the arm of his chair and a hand that held a tennis ball popped up, he slingshotted the tennis ball into a small hole in the wall triggering some kind of chain reaction that neither me nor Gromit could see. The TV started to expand out from the wall all the way up to the chair so he could switch on the power. I love that he always wants to invent new things but we already had a remote that can do all that stuff, maybe he just wanted to be extra?
"Modern technology, and right from the comfort of my armchair."
The TV retracted back to its original position and what seemend to be some kind of documentary was on called When Penguins Turn. Interesting.
"Oh no wrong program, quick change channel! Oh I've used me only ball!"
Grandpa was whipping his head around the room, looking for a substitute for the lost tennis ball. Gromit rolled his eyes and held up the TV remote, the probably better tool for this predicement.
"Oh thanks lad, that's just the ticket."
Grandpa placed the remote into the launcher and it catapulted into the hole in the wall. I couldn't stop myself from facepalming that time. I love my grandpa and I know he always means well but sometimes he doesn't think things completely through. After hearing a bunch of alarming crashes and malfunctions, the TV channel had changed to The Cheese Files. Maybe the remote hit one of the buttons on its way down the crash course.
"Well I think we got away with that one aye pooches?"
Grandpa had apparently spoke to soon. The TV then shot out from the wall and hit him dead on where the sun don't shine and pinning him to the wall behind him.
"Oooh that's torn it. I think I bent me cube."
I quickly got up and pulled the heavy TV off of him and set him back into his chair, going back to the kitchen to grab an ice pack. I'll put this invention on the definitely NOT list. Next time, he should just use the remote. I'll have to fix the TV later.
"Oh thanks Duckling. OH! I almost forgot, and since the television is out of commission for now we can get started on it now. It's the idea I came up with involving the Mind Manipulation O Matic while we were on our way back from Tottington Hall."
Damn, I was kind of hoping he had forgotten about that...
A/n: The necklace mentioned is actually real, it's my favorite necklace that I own that was given to me by my grandma.
This chapter was so sweet and wholesome AAAAAAAAAH X3
