1.Prologue to the beginning
The air shifted upon Lily's arrival. Covered in the darkness, she stood at a far distance watching the famous wolves of Shepherd's Creek, her recent targets.
They didn't look that imposing in the slightest. Although their numbers posed a problem, it would soon be a matter taken care of.
Upon further examination, it was obvious the pups were the reason their numbers looked great. The scouts had even brought news that the Alpha didn't look as vicious as rumors made him out to be. And there was something very wrong with him...a weakness. Making that moment, the perfect time to ambush him.
Lily's eyed the demon who was making headway to her.
The light of the half moon dimly lit the corners of the forest, hiding the small army of demons in the darkness.
The leaves on the tree rustled from their effort to hold on in the chilly winds.
'We've located the Alpha. And great news, he's not in the den.'
'So he's alone.' Lily clarified.
'Not quite. He's with his woman.'
Lily was very pleased with the news. 'And you are sure he's alone. No other wolves around?'
The demon eagerly nodded. Lily shrank back in disgust as she watched the demon salivate in his relentless eagerness to consume blood.
The light yellow color mucus slipped down its pus littered face which was bordered tiny hooked thorns. Like most demons present, he had no ears, skeletal looking nose and charcoal black skin with red veins creeping over it.
Lily looked away, anywhere but at the demon. Her skin crawled at the thought of working with these lesser creatures but it seemed like she needed their help. And this might be the only way to get the job.
'Get the rest and get to work.'
He left which gratefully took him away from her sight.
Lily watched a dozen demons skulk through the forest, but she kept her distance from the unauthorized plot against the Alpha. She couldn't afford to get caught.
With this matter behind her, Lily hastily retraced her steps back into the southern territory where other business beckoned.
As she walked on, she smiled at the brilliance of her plan, she patted her own back since there was no one to do so.
She pulled up her light brown hair into a messy bun to keep the strands from falling in her face then she hiked her skirt up to secure her footing.
The plan was so simple it was genius if she should say so.
The stupid werewolf and his wolf minions had chosen the wrong place to camp. It was so close to vampire territory that Lily could single-handedly start a war and please the mistress.
And that was what she had set into motion. She was confident in herself and her plan.
The demons would attack Osei... or whatever his name was. She didn't even know him personally. What she knew about him was based on things the mistress expressed and rumors others told about him. She didn't have to know him to hate him. He was a werewolf and that was reason enough. Her plan was to blame the attack all on the ever troublesome rogue vampires. The Lynch clan would be so insulted they would seek revenge. Feeling angry and betrayed, no one would want to sit down and talk. They'd only desire to tear each other apart and then there will be fewer hurdles for the Mistress to overcome in order to win. How could she not appreciate her disobedience then?
Lily broke into a jog when the excitement was too much to just keep in her mind, she slowed into a skip once she arrived at her desired location.
She too and the 'test' subject were camped in the northernmost point of bloodsuckers territory since they didn't like being too close to the shifters. She couldn't have picked a better location.
A tiny part of her pulled at her nerves. The stubborn voice just wouldn't shut up about what she was doing. And what she was doing, was disobeying orders. But the plan was already set in motion and so there was no going back.
Those pesky nobles needed to be taught a lesson and Lily wasn't as patient as her mistress.
Lily smiled to herself and quieted her looming fears. The results of her stark disobedience will overshadow the act itself. The end would justify the means.
Her feet kicked up dust which clung to the bottom of her skirt. Her snake leather boots crushed dried leaves and fallen twigs on the small path where the sparse grass barely carpeted her footsteps, announcing her presence.
A small man stepped out and into her path with thick red veins that traveled from just above his cheekbones to his lower eyelids. His pupils were large and black almost covering up the whites of the eye. The visible whites were stained with red as though a blood vessel had popped in his eye.
From the look of him, the vampire was a rogue and he was ready to feed. He smiled baring his fangs at her in an attempt to incite fear into her.
The twisted bastards enjoyed the smell immensely.
'We've been waiting on you pretty.'
Lily rolled her eyes at him. She hated working with vamps too. Not that she'd personally ever worked with them but she found herself hating the idea for reasons. The most outstanding one was that they were monsters, she needn't go further. But it was all for the greater good.
'I'm not your snack.' She fiercely spat without so much as acknowledging him further.
'Call off your hounds. I have an offer you can not refuse.'
'Right now your blood is the only thing we can't refuse.' He attempted to make a move on her so she quickly cast a fire spell calling fire to the tip of her fingers. She threw some a couple of yards away from the vampire just for good measure. He jumped back to escape the dangerous flames. His startled eyes looked from her to the flames.
A smile played on her lips when she saw just how scared he was and how torn he was.
The fire was one of the few things that could harm vampires. The ordinary flames would severely hurt them but blue fire like the one she currently wielded would burn them to ash.
'You can test it out of you want.' She egged the vamp.
'You wield blue flame.' He shakily observed, his anxious eyes darted to the trees where his comrades were undoubted.
'Yes, and I'm done with your shit so let's talk before my patience runs out.'
Now he was willing to listen.
Three other vampires slowly moved into her line of view, joining their friend.
She gave them the short and sweet alternative version of the plan meant for them.
In the end, they only laughed in her face.
'There's no such thing. That's just a myth.' The small one said.
'We hate the lords too, they are trouble for our way of life but still, why would we want to go against the lords? That's suicide.'
Lily didn't disagree. She wouldn't be here if she didn't think there was a great chance to accomplish the elaborate plot but there was a chance.
'It may seem that way, incredible, unbelievable. But I have proof.'
The cart arrived some minutes later. The vampires snarled at her with impatient looks, obviously, they thought they were being played.
That soon changed when they saw what was in the cart... or more like who was in the cart.
It was a healthy sized middle-aged man and he looked like he'd make a great meal for these four rogues.
Their beady eyes grew darker with excitement and hunger.
'This isn't your snack boys so quiet down.'
Lily motioned for the human to come to her.
'I know you vampires are famous for your compulsion. Try compelling him. If you succeed I will leave him to you to devour him.'
To sweeten the pot, she added.
'I'll even throw my neck in the deal.'
Their eyes immediately locked on her slender and creamy neck and moved to her cherry red lips. She parted them just enough to release a sensual gasp and it worked effectively.
If the vamps were excited then, they were over the moon now.
'Deal!' The one Lily pegged to be the leader of the ragtag bunch responded. He practically screamed it.
In a blink of an eye, he stood before the man. And in a very persuasive yet stern voice, he commanded the man to dance like a chicken.
The man only looked at Lily.
He tried two more times, then he turned a nasty look at her.
'What kind of magic is this witch.'
Lily wasn't scared, she only chuckled and then pretended to flip her shoulder length hair which was tied up.
'It's magic we have. Magic strong enough that vampire compulsion won't ever be able to break.'
The vampires stiffened, it wasn't because of the revelation. That was in and of itself astonishing but they'd heard something.
'Who else did you come with?
Lily looked just as surprised as they were.
'I didn't bring anyone else.'
Then she paused. Unless the demons had returned after dispatching the wolf master.
But she'd expressly instructed them to disperse and hide out until things cooled over.
'Hekyl, check it out.' Lily whispered to the human.
But what was the use? The vampires had great senses.
'We will check it out ourselves.'
Should the intruder be a demon and should they have failed, she couldn't let them discover what she'd done.
Lily tsked at them.
'If it isn't someone we know, do you want to be discovered?' She asked them.
They were slightly confused. But yet again, the small one spoke.
'We'll kill them.'
'And if you can't kill them? Let's not take that risk. I'm letting Hekyl here go so nothing is traced back to us.'
They saw the sense in her words and backed off.
Hekyl disappeared into the trees with inhuman speed.
'He's enhanced as well. With a different kind of magic.'
Their eyes grew larger in awe which made her smile and take great pride in being apart of this.
Simple minded bloodsuckers. They had no idea what they were getting themselves into.
'You might want to call your pet back, he's going into wolf territory.'
Lily was really tempted to roast the pessimistic fool. It wasn't his fault though, he didn't know about the demons she'd sent ahead to take care of the Alpha everyone was so scared of.
Sometime later, a loud terrifying roar tore through the other side of the border. It was so loud it could be heard for miles.
Lily's heart quickened in fear, she'd never heard anything as menacing or as terrifying as that before.
