THREE

Goodmorning Jeongguk.
Today is January 15th, 2157.
It is currently 8 AM.
The humidity is 40%, with a temperature of 22 degrees.

This time it was different.

Jeongguk had been used to the voice of Insight for a little over a year now. It was the only voice he had been hearing apart from his own.

He felt lonely.
Utterly alone.

He needed someone, anyone, some other healthy human being whom he could actually see, talk to, touch.

Sure, Insight's voice made him feel less alone, but it wasn't an actual person.

It was a system.

A system which has been providing him all of the necessary information he needed for the last 377 days, to keep him aware of what was happening outside.

Outside.

A place he hasn't seen in a long, long time.

The latest memory he had of it, was chaotic. People screaming, walkers everywhere. Him, running after his father and far away from what once used to be his mother.

"Thank you, Insight." The male grabbed the backpack from the couch where he had put it yesterday evening before he went to bed, making sure to double check if he had everything before he left.

He added a few more light weighted stuff, some things he forgot to add yesterday.

Grabbing his water bottle, he filled it up to the brim -not sure when he could do that again- and took a small sip, stuffing that on the side of his backpack too.

He looked around, emotions going all over the place. This place, this bunker, somehow felt like home to him. It was the nearest thing to home he had left.

But now, he will leave it behind.

"Insight, are there any important things I would need when I go outside?"

Are you going to go outside?
Remember that walkers react to sound and smell. Some of them can see, but their sight isn't very well.

Jeongguk tried to be strong but Insight's voice made him tear up a little.

"I have no other choice. I have weapons, spare clothes, the last bit of food and some water. I have a flashlight, probably everything I need is in it. Is there anything else I might need?"

Have you packed medicine?

Thanking the system, he rushed to get the little boxes of medicine that were left. It wasn't much, but it was something.

And something is always better than nothing at all, right?

"How late is it?"

It is currently 8.30 AM.
Is there anything else?

"Yeah.." He took a breath, going through the door he only came from once, and that was back when he came here for the first time.

He closed the door behind him, tying his shoelaces very tight before he said, "Don't let anyone enter this bunker apart from me, remember the scan of my hand."

He wouldn't want to risk someone infected getting in, he needed to know that this place he calls home was safe. A last resort, if anything bad happens. Who knows, he might actually find food somewhere other than a bunker, but that would mean that he wants to go back here.

He needed that safe place.
He needed that thought, it kept him more at ease.

Of course.
Your demand has been saved in the system.
Is there anything else you would like me to do?

From the room he was in, he could see the scan of his hand displayed on the huge glass panel, it made the edge of his lips curve up in the smallest smile ever.

Rethinking all of his choices, he nodded to himself.

"Then, I would like it if you'd open the bunker. Goodbye, Insight. Thank you for your assistance."

Currently opening the bunker.
Please stand by.
Goodbye, Jeongguk.
Of course, always ready to assist you.
Take care.

The next thing Jeongguk experienced, was the sound of the sealed off bunker opening. The door slowly opened, bright light making the male squint his eyes.

The sound of birds chirping was something he hadn't heard in a long time.

Once he adjusted his eyes to the light, his hand found its way to the pocket of his pants, were he kept a gun for immediate access if he needed to take action. It made him feel safer.

His nerves were killing him whilst he carefully stepped out of the bunker, a light breeze and warm air brushing past him, his skin overwhelmed by the sudden vitamin D it began lacking.

The next step he put wasn't on a carpet, or a cold, stone floor.

No, the next step he put was on grass, followed by another and another.

He stopped for a moment, taking in his surroundings.

It looked clear, for now.

The bunker closed, in the distance he could hear Insight's voice.

System logging off.

He took another deep breath, and with that he began walking into the direction of the nearest bunker.

The green grass, trees, fresh air, all those things sounded so simple, but he hadn't realized how much he had actually missed it.

But now that he walked here, he felt more alone than ever.

More scared.

He was vulnerable. Out in the open.
No more walls to protect him.

He was left to fend for himself.

His eyes fell on something in the grass about three steps ahead of him.

He scrunched up his nose, a rotten smell made him want to puke.

There was a corpse, buried in some dirt, a rusty metal old pipe half a metre away from it.

Fortunately, the corpse seemed to be actually dead.

Bones sticking out everywhere, the question was what was actually left of it. It had been decomposing for a long time.

The smell was still as bad as he remembered, sadly.

He trudged on, he was a man on a mission, a dangerous one.

He had to keep going.
He had to.

Trees surrounded him, up ahead he could see the city.

I guess that most of the walkers are going to be there. That's where most of the people were. That means I have to go around it, but that would take me more than three days. I have no idea how long it is going to take to walk from the city to the bunker, I only know how many miles it is going to be. A few hours, most definitely.

He had to make another decision.

Going around the city, trying to stay hidden for as long as he could, or risk himself going in more open clearings, and try to make his way right through the city to save himself precious time and food.

I've risked myself already by stepping out of that bunker. Might aswell just try and save time. I don't know how long I have like this anyways.

With that, he marched on.
