THIRTY-ONE

One bullet after another shot right through the air.

One walker after another fell dead to the ground.

There were less and less bullets, Yoongi was on his last reload and Namjoon pulled the trigger one last time, only to find it empty.

The two boys looked at Jeongguk, "We're out. Fuck, we're- we're doomed." Yoongi stated, letting himself slide down the van.

Namjoon followed him.

Jeongguk shot a few more times, his breath ragged. He jumped off the van aswell, "We have to fucking run! Don't look back, we have to run!"

And so they did.

They ran and ran, dodging a few walkers that nearly grasped on to them, Jeongguk shooting their arms or legs in the rush.

"Yoongi, hurry up!" Namjoon urged the man, watching as he had his struggles.

Jeongguk shot a few more walkers in front of them, turning on his feet to shoot a walker that was nearing both Namjoon and Yoongi.

"Guys I'm going to run out of bullets soon!" Jeongguk screamed out, gripping his hair. He kept on turning on his heels, shooting more and more and more walkers until the dreaded moment was there.

He only had one more bullet left.

Namjoon and Jeongguk ran next to each other, stopping in their tracks when they heard something behind them.

Yoongi stumbled to the ground after twisting his already pained ankle once again, he hissed out.

Jeongguk was about to run towards him, when another creature appeared.

It was quicker than him.

Jeongguk's eyes widened, he reached his hand out, screaming.

"YOONGI, STAND UP! STAND FUCKING UP! PLEASE!"

The mentioned boy was frozen in his spot.

He turned his head, watching as the walker neared him.
He looked back at Jeongguk, a look taking over his face which the younger hated seeing.

Determination.

He wasn't going to attempt standing up.

Yoongi had his eyebrows scrunched up, he braced himself.

"YOONGI!" Namjoon screamed from behind Jeongguk, a few metres away.
The man could only watch as it happened.

Jeongguk was shaking furiously on his legs, he raised his gun, aiming it at the walker.

He looked through his scope once more, knowing that he only had one chance.

One.

The creature stumbled towards Yoongi who was seated on the dirty ground, eyes tightly shut.

Jeongguk hand his finger near the trigger, ready to pull it any second.

But once the creature was about ten metres away from Yoongi, the youngest nearly collapsed to the floor.

His heart shattered completely, a pain coursing through him he didn't know he was capable of feeling.

The gun shook in his hands, his aim completely messed up.

Tears streamed down his face, a desperate cry left his lips.

He had to choose.

But how could he ever murder what was once his own mother?

"JEONGGUK! KILL IT! FUCKING KILL IT, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR-?" Namjoon screamed out, voice hoarse.

And he was right.

What was he waiting for?

His mother was dead.
The virus had gotten to her, a long, long time ago.

What were the odds of seeing her in this state once again, at this moment?

How bad could this situation get?

His mother was dead and Yoongi would be dead too, if Jeongguk didn't pull the trigger any time soon.

But the boy was frozen.

He was frozen in his spot, memories playing through his head.

Back when his mother's eyes didn't have the dull expression she wore right now, back when she was full of life.

Back when Jeongguk was just a little boy, when she read him bedtime stories and sung him to sleep.
When she patted his head, her warm embrace providing him of the feeling of love, home, family.

Back when she goofed around with his father, cracking jokes to make the boy laugh when he needed it.
The way she was always there to care for him, she was always one call away.

The way she cried when Jeongguk graduated from high school, pulling him in her warm embrace to cheer for him.

The way she reached for him with her hand when Jeongguk needed it.

But now Jeongguk watched as her hand reached for Yoongi, no longer with the intention of providing care, an act out of love.

No, she wasn't doing this; something was doing this to her. The virus. The damned virus that took her soul away, took over her body and turned her into this.

A rotten corpse, bones sticking out and her once flowery fresh scent had turned into the smell of death. Her warm, golden tanned skin now grey-ish, ripped away at some places and revealing her insides. She was decomposing, a walking dead.

That's the thing, that's what they've been doing all along. They've been walking amongst the undead, it wasn't just his mother; it were thousands, millions of other mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, relatives and aquintances, everyone you once loved and knew turned into one of those things, all around the world, once the virus got to them.

The virus knew no mercy.
It knew no love and it most definitely didn't care whether it was someone you cared about or not.

It took everyone and everything into death along with them, and Yoongi was about to be another number added to that rate if Jeongguk didn't pull the trigger.

The youngest screamed, a painful, pitiful scream ran past his lips.

It made the walker, his mother, stop in her tracks, she looked at the boy.

Jeongguk glanced at her corpse, scanning what was left of her face to see if there was any form of recognition behind those dull eyes.

But there wasn't.
She was long gone.
Her humanity had been stripped away from her.

The boy raised his gun once again, it was now or never. The walker had laid eyes upon Yoongi once more, if it took once more step the boy would be a dead man.

Jeongguk cried, wail after wail left his mouth.

He pulled the trigger with his shaking hands.

He missed.
