SIX
Making his way through a smaller alleyway, he passed more and more buildings as he walked.
He managed to dodge a few walkers without them noticing, he took note of the fact that they seemed more active at night.
Jeongguk tried to come off as strong, he tried to toughen up, he tried to defend himself, but the truth was, he was scared.
He was scared to his core.
Every sound that wasn't made by him made his heart drop, continuously making him feel like an ice cold bucket of water was emptied on top of him.
Whenever he turn around, he was met with seemingly nothing, but he couldn't be more cautious.
The alleyway ended, he now stood on a bigger, open road.
He looked left, then he looked right, then he wished he hadn't looked right, because once he looked, he was face to face with another virus infected individual.
His breath hitched, the creature now aware of the fact that he was here, screeched loudly. It began running towards him, just a few more metres and Jeongguk would be a dead man.
He ran. He ran as quick as his legs could carry him, having no idea where the hell he was running to.
Because of the fact that he was running, he wasn't that silent anymore.
One walker turned into three, all of them now catching up to him.
The second one was faster than the first. Jeongguk made a sharp turn, the being reaching an arm out and the male swore he could feel the cold, boney, most of all deadly fingers on his shoulder.
But fortunately, he didn't manage to grasp onto the boy.
Jeongguk was lost. The map showed all of the possible bunkers, but getting there was an absolute issue. It was very unclear where he was right now -not that he had time to look at it this instant since he was running for his life- but he knew that once he did have the opportunity to do so again, he would still be just as confused.
His legs started to ache, the hissing, screeching sounds never seemed to stop. The footsteps behind him would haunt him in his nightmares.
This was all a nightmare.
To the male, it was.
His legs came to a deadly halt.
It seemed like he reached the center of the city.
Crashed down helicopters, even more wrecked cars, dead people were everywhere.
But to his utter shock, there were so many walkers, he couldn't even count them.
But he was stuck. He found himself in the exact situation he was most afraid of getting into.
Behind him were three walkers, all of them already having noticed Jeongguk and planning on killing his soul and in front of him was even worse.
I have to go back, I have to go back, I have to go back, quickl-
The moment he turned around, he ducked, an arm -what was left of it- swung over him, nails nearly digging its way into his skin.
He used his weapon to stab the walker in its chest, trying to kill it, disable it, somehow.
The problem was, the other two weren't so far away anymore. Only about fifteen more metres, and it'd be over for the boy.
It was now or never.
He pulled his knife back, swinging it with as much force as he could, slicing its entire head off.
Something that creeped him out was the fact that the rest of its body kept on 'functioning' for what seemed like forever, before that finally fell down too.
He couldn't fight two of these at once. One was already too much.
Hastily, he scanned the area, tears welling up in his eyes once he noticed that there was no place he could run to.
This is it?
Is this how I'll die?
He pulled his gun out of his pocket, removing the safety lock and aiming it at the first creatures' head.
He shot.
His aim was now on the last one.
He shot again.
Sure, he might've saved himself from those three, but looking back towards all of the others, he saw that he caught the attention of most of them.
They were stalking towards him, he could see it.
They were farther away, much farther away than those three had been, so once again, he made a run for it.
Praying that his human scent wouldn't linger in the air too much, he tried to run as silently as possible, tears streaming down his face.
He turned left, about to pass a building, when he noticed a ladder.
He didn't hesitate for more than two seconds, climbing up as fast as he could.
He pulled the ladder up with him, just to make sure that whatever creature was down there, would actually stay down.
He laid flat on the roof, crawling forward so he could see what was happening.
A wrecked advertising sign on top of the edge of the roof made his position more hidden. There was a small gap he could see right through, he held his breath.
It seemed like they weren't sure if there was a human. They didn't rush, the only thing they did was sniff the air, trudging their way down the road all together.
God, the smell. The smell was so, so bad.
Jeongguk didn't dare to breathe. He was afraid that if he'd exhale, they would find him. They would find a way to climb up the roof and turn him into one of them, his next destination being in the middle of that herd, doing exactly what they were doing.
He'd rather shoot himself, other than becoming that.
Please don't find me, please don't find me, please keep walking, please..
He begged mentally, watching as half of the herd had passed him, leaving the area.
The other half took longer, probably those with better senses, still.
The male looked to his side, noticing a few rocks.
He grabbed the biggest one, crawling a little out of the way of the sign and threw it as far as he could.
He listened as the stone fell on the road somewhere, that momentarily being the loudest sound apart from the inhumane ones coming from the walkers.
He hid himself again, peeking though the gap.
The zombies all turned their heads, hurrying towards wherever the stone landed.
Finally, after all those minutes, the male could exhale again. He dropped his head on his arms, clenching his jaw. His cheeks felt wet, the only emotions he felt right now being desperation, hopelessness.
What do I do? I barely survived that, I can't do this. I fucking can't do this anymore.. I can't, I-
His body shook, legs still shaking from what happened mere minutes ago, adrenaline pumping through his veins.
His heart still had a fast pace, not going back to normal any time soon.
He bit on his tongue, keeping in the sounds that threatened to come out of his mouth.
I can't fucking take this anymore. How do I survive this? I can't fucking survive this. I'm all alone, I have no one left. H-
His depressive thoughts as well as his breathing stopped, once again, for the hundredth time today.
A crash like noise came from not far on the street, he pressed his eyes shut, hoping whatever it was, wouldn't allure more of those walking nightmares.
He once again peeked through the gap of the sign, staying very well hidden himself.
He saw a dark figure disappearing around the corner, it moved faster than the other walkers had been doing.
What is this? The killer-boss? The 'healthiest' amongst them all? Its senses have already spotted me, haven't it? It's probably already planning on murdering me in my sleep-
"Fuck!"
Furrowing his eyebrows, Jeongguk looked at the road again.
No, it wasn't him who cursed.
But then, who did?
