"Jeongguk, hurry! Come on! We have to go now!"

"Yeah, I'm coming, I'm coming!" He ran after his father, his mother trying to catch up from behind.

At least, what was left of her.

He was conflicted, either he ran for his life but that would mean leaving his mother behind, or he slowed down.

He slowed down, but then what?

"JEONGGUK!" His father cried desperately, "I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE HER EITHER, BUT LET'S FACE REALITY, SHE'S GONE, MY DEAREST BOY. SHE'S GONE!"

Tears welled up in his own eyes, he looked back once again, his eyes blocking out all of the other sounds coming from the background.

It was a mess. People ran for their lives, the sudden announced virus spreading quicker than anyone could ever imagine.

From the eldest to the youngest, those-- those things, whatever they did to a person and made sure to leave of them, wasn't human. It was anything but that. They bit every single individual they came across.

It didn't matter it was just a three year old kid, or a retired person.

"JEONGGUK!" His father's voice shocked him back into reality. To his utter fear, he saw that what was once his mother was now dangerously close to him, catching up real fast.

He closed his eyes for a split second, took a deep breath in, and with the last quick glance at her, he ran after his father.

"WHERE ARE WE GOING?!" He shouted, dodging one of the creatures that was trying to attack him sideways.

One eye hanging out, skin that didn't even look like skin anymore, only a dark grey, greenish rotten corpse was left. But even if it was a corpse, it was walking, running, even. And it could catch up fast.

"THERE ARE BUNKERS SPREAD GLOBALLY, IN CASE OF EMERGENCIES. I KNOW A BUNKER, IT ISN'T FAR FROM HERE. PLEASE, JEONGGUK, WHATEVER HAPPENS, PROTECT YOURSELF!"

The boy could only watch as his father's pace slowed down a little, his body not having as much energy or stamina as his twenty-three year old body did.

He slowed down aswell, quickly glancing around him. He could see a metal pipe buried in layers of rubbish.

Not seeing any other being apart from himself and his father in sight for now, he ran towards it and with all of his might, pulled it out of the ground.

He sped back towards his father, running after him towards the bunker.

"WATCH OUT!!" He screamed, watching as his parent reacted too late and was pulled towards the ground.

The younger male didn't hesitate. Using the metal pipe as a weapon, he strudged towards the walking corpse, plunging the pipe right through its chest.

Twisting it, he used his force to throw the creature back, pulling the pipe back out. He could only watch as it fell to the ground, giving him and his father time to escape.

"HOW MUCH FARTHER?!" He panted, one arm around his dear father to help him regain his balance and strength.

"T-THERE! DO YOU SEE THOSE TREES? WE ARE NEAR IT!" The sound of relief mixed with prominent fear sounded somewhat good to Jeongguk's ears at the moment.

It was better than the fear alone.

A rush of adrenaline shot through the male, and by the looks of it through the other too, since they both sped up again.

"FOLLOW ME!"

The sound of a screeching being was heard, and not even a few seconds later they found themselves in front of the bunker his father was talking about.

Once again, Jeongguk immediately rushed into action and defended both himself and his father from one of those things again, leaving the metal pipe behind.

He saw his father opening the bunker, his hand pressed against a small device that seemed to scan his hand.

"COME ON, COME ON, COME ON, COME O-"

Permission to enter granted.

"YES!" The bunker opened. As they rushed inside, Jeongguk took a close look at where they came from.

Outside.

Something that he wasn't going to see anytime soon again. And deep down he knew that.

The door closed, the bunker was now completely sealed off.

Please step in this room for the further decontamination process.

It was a systematic voice, it could be heard throughout the entire bunker.

They did as told, watching as the hoses from above them released a wierd type of gas with pressure. It smelled like the purest form of alcohol.

Decontamination process succeeded.
Welcome to bunker 1059.
I am Insight.
Your personal assistance.
I can provide you any information you need.

As depressing as the situation was, Jeongguk couldn't lie, this was pretty cool. He felt safe. And so did his father.

They stepped out of the room and closed a door behind them, their eyes widening at what they saw.

It was huge, bright, it looked like a room you could find in one of those expensive homes.

The thing that caught Jeongguk's attention the most, were the devices. A huge, glass panel hung in the middle of the room, and out of curiosity, he touched it.

Letters appeared on the screen, the voice was back again.

System updating, please stand by.

After waiting for a few minutes, the system seemed like it had updated everything.

I can show you any information on the panel.

Jeongguk turned to look at his father, who now sat on a bright white couch, hands in his hair whilst he cried silently.

"No, thank you, Insight. Not right now." The boy decided to answer, biting his bottom lip.

Of course.
If there's anything I can do for you,
let me know.

Jeongguk sat down next to his father, patting his back in silence.

The image of his mother this morning smiling warmly at him flashed through his mind, her eyes full of life, her voice sweet and warm.

But with that, the image of half an hour came aswell. He winced, tears streaming down his face.

His mother was gone. Replaced by the virus that got to her head, infected her, and spread throughout her entire body.

And what now?
What was happening to the world?

Today is January 1, 2156.
It is 8 PM.
The humidity outside is 45%,
With a temperature of 19 degrees.

The voice spoke up, after Jeongguk had asked, around two hours later.

"What is happening outside?" He asked again, the things he knows already disturbing him to his core.

An unknown virus is currently spreading throughout the world.

Jeongguk and his father listened as the panel showed videos of what seemed like drone footages from above.

Once you get bitten, the virus spreads and enters your blood system. It destroys your nerve system, it takes over your entire body. The brain dies, the heart doesn't beat anymore. The latest images by scientists have shown that the virus takes hold in the center part of the brain, controlling what is left of the individual.

Jeongguk looked away from the panel once his eyes fell on some of the images, rotten corpses standing back on their feet, some of their limbs gone, their eyes having a dull expression. There was nothing left behind those eyes, apart from the thing that took their life away from them so suddenly.

"Where did the virus come from? How do we get out of this situation? And- how- what is there to eat?" The male rambled, fresh tears jumping back into his eyes.

It is unknown where the virus came from. I can not provide enough information to answer that question.
The white door in the back gives enter to the room of food that the bunker provides.
I estimate that there is enough food for the coming 2 years.

"Thank you, Insight." Jeongguk rushed past his father towards the room. Entering, he saw shelves upon shelves stocked with packed, sealed off food that wouldn't expire any time soon.

Every package was displayed on its own small panel, probably so Insight could calculate how much food there was left.

He took a package from one panel, the blue crease in between the white set up now going grey. Taking the next one for his father, he watched the process again, before he left the room.

He handed his father one of the packages that he meant to get him, opening the other for himself.

There was an empty bottle, and a container which had some sort of cereal in it.

"Insight? Where can we get water from?" He asked.

There's an unlimited water supply,
you can take however much you need from here.

Looking around to see what 'here' meant, he noticed a spot that flickered blue and white light.

Walking towards it with his and his father's water bottle, he saw a faucet.

"Thank you, Insight."

Of course.
Anything else?

"Where do we sleep? Where's the bathroom?"

The blue door on the right around the corner gives you enter to the bathroom.
The second white door on the left gives you enter to the bedrooms.
In total, this bunker would provide enough space for 7 people, but food would run out quicker.
There are other bigger bunkers, with more food, spread globally.

Taking in the new information, the male smiled a little.

"Thanks, Insight."

They would be okay, for now.
