-Chapter 6

Alex quickly wheeled me down the ramp, still being gentle. "Alrighty.. You boys ready to head to the doctor?" Mom asked, fiddling with her keys. I nodded. "Yep." Alex said, placing a warm hand on my shoulder that sent electricity through my body. Why am I feeling this way about Alex? I just don't understand.

"Yup," James said, his voice altered by his stuffy nose. He held a couple blankets in his arms. "Ok.." Mom said, making sure she had everything in her purse. "I think we've got everything.. Let's go!" She exclaimed calmly with a little smile.

We all went out the door, Mom closing it behind us. I sighed, looking at my lap. Mom opened the door to our family SUV, the door sliding backwards automatically. Alex lifted me up bridal style, then sat me gently in the middle row of the car. James got in the back just so he could lay down with a blanket, using one as a pillow. Alex got in beside me, and reached for my hand. I blushed, but obliged, letting him hold my hand.

I heard the clinking of my wheelchair as mom folded it, and loaded it in the trunk of the car. Alex held onto my hand as if it'd disappear if he held on to loosely. I rested my head on the windowsill and stared out at all of the trees in the neighborhood.

Mom started the car, sending vibrations through my body, but not as dramatic as when Alex touched me. She put on the 80s and 90s mix, which made me grin. I saw Alex smile a little from the corner of my eye. I really did hope that he liked my kind of music.

" I Hope You Dance" came on, making me grin. I loved this song. It was a childhood favorite of mine. It would always make me happy. I fought the urge to sing along, even though Mom was. She had a beautiful voice. My voice wasn't that beautiful. I didn't really want to mess up in front of Alex. I'd die of embarrassment.

I listened as my mom hit beautiful notes perfectly. I sighed quietly through my nose, not wanting to attract attention.

We finally pulled up to the doctor's office, which I'd remembered the way there from being there so many times. Alex held me in his arms. He offered to carry me there. I didn't mind, and surely the two 'shippers' didn't mind either. Whatever that meant.

Mom did carry my wheelchair in, just in case. I folded my arms against my chest, leaning my head in the crook of Alex's neck. I could hear his steady breathing, and his heartbeat. It was soothing, like a lullaby.

Alex sat down in a comfortable chair, me still in his lap. I could feel my cheeks heating up a little as he wrapped his arms around my waist to keep me there, as if I'd fall.

Alex was sweet. He wasn't like other boys who would tease you because they 'liked' you. No, Alex was different. He was charming, sweet, he could easily make you flustered, but he decided not to because he worried it would ruin something special. That's what I wanted in a guy.

Now looks. Looks don't really matter to me, saying I'm not pretty myself. Alex though. He's beautiful, and all those wonderful characteristics that someone would want in a guy. You mix those things together and you get Alex.

Mom came back, sitting beside us in a chair. "They said they'll have you back in about 10 minutes, okay, honey?" Mom said, looking at me with worried eyes. I hummed in response. "It doesn't hurt as much as it did." I said, fiddling with my fingers. "Alright.." Mom said softly, leaning back in her chair. She sighed and pulled out her phone. Jamie held my hand. He really was a sweet little brother. How did I get so lucky as to have him as my brother?

Heck, how did I get such loving people that care about me enough to take me to the doctors over some bruises?!

A lady with a light red nurses outfit came out with a clipboard. "John Laurens?" She asked, scanning the room. My mom stood up. "That's us!" She said. Alex positioned me back into a bridal style position, and stood up with me in his arms. I found it funny that I was a little bit taller than him, if I could stand properly.

Alex carried me to the station where the doctors check my weight and height. "Alright we'll need to check you weight.." She trailed off. Alex carefully let me down, supporting me, I could see my legs wobbling from under me. "Alright 128.7 pounds.." She mumbled to herself, writing it down. I stared at the wall for a moment, jumping a little when she spoke again. "Ok, I'll need to measure you as well." She said. I nodded and tried to stand as straight as possible, but that was kind of impossible considering the fact that I was indeed not straight.

"5'7 and a half.. ok.." The nurse mumbled, writing it down on the paper. Alex held an arm under my arm, and around my chest, supporting me. He was pretty strong, even though he wouldn't admit it.

"Alright that's it for now, I'll take you to your room, and let Mr. Madison check you from there." She said, then led us to room 25. Alex helped my get on the bed thing, then I lay back looking at the ceiling. Alex sat down at the end of the bed, next to my feet. There were only two chairs; James, and Mom had already claimed. James looked like he was about to drift off into a deep sleep. Alex slumped over slightly. I noticed he did this a lot.

Then, the doctor came in. "Hello, My name is Mr. Madison, and I will be your doctor today." He said in a smooth calm voice. It was very relaxing to listen to. He probably practiced it for the nervous patients. I sighed quietly.

 This would take a while.
