Both men take off their headphones, and are ready to call it a day. Neither wants to make eye contact. They're relieved to have managed to survive the first day together. But they don't know how long before they will try to kill the other.
Singto grabs his belongings, and he is ready to leave. Today's show felt much longer than three hours. He is already worried about the mountains of emails he is going to get from today's show.
While Krist gets up slowly because he doesn't want to follow right behind Singto. His body is a bit sluggish anyway as it's still adjusting to the new schedule. Overall, he thinks the show went pretty well, and he is glad that Singto played along during his topics. And although Singto's topics weren't nearly as exciting as his topics were, they weren't too bad. Worst dates, biggest turn offs, and first kisses weren't bad at all. He had fun going down memory lane too. Considering how responsive the callers were, everyone seemed to enjoy Singto's topics too.
Singto swings open the door, and luckily he didn't take a step yet. Otherwise, his face would have slammed right into Tay's.
"Gentlemen, in my office, Now." Tay bellows.
Tay turns his heels for his office without saying another word. Singto tightens his grip around the strap of his bag, and reluctantly follows behind. Krist quickly stuffs all his things into his bag, and tries to follow behind Singto. He didn't want to be too far behind Singto now. Fiat shakes his head watching all three men march out of the studio.
"Shut the door!" Tay says, nearly shouting once Krist steps inside his office.
Singto has a hunch what this is all about, but he didn't think it's this bad. He sighs, and takes one of the two seats across from Tay's desk. He wishes he has a jacket or a blanket of some sort. He's either really cold or really scared at the moment with all his goosebumps showing. Or it could be both. He can't decide.
Krist takes the seat beside Singto. He hasn't had that many encounters with Tay since his hiring. And that's mostly due to his late night show's schedule. Most of their communication was through emails, and their last in person meeting was a few weeks ago about switching his schedule. Tay looked much more pleasant then than what he looks like at the moment. Because right now, smoke is coming out of his flared nostrils, or maybe it's just really cold in this office. He can definitely see some puffing going on.
"What the hell was that?" Tay pushes his opened jacket, and shouts with his hands on his hips.
Krist looks at Singto for some clues to what is going on here, but Singto didn't look his way. All Singto does is sit there with his legs crossed, looking bored.
"Do you two know the phones were ringing off the hook?" Tay asks with spit flying out of his mouth.
"That's a good thing, right?" Krist says softly. It's a good sign of listener's response when there's a lot of callers during his late night show. Sometimes, there's not enough to make time go by, and he ends up having to talk a lot more than he wants to. It can get a little boring.
"Ten years. In ten years of my time here, I've never received so many complaints in one morning. How can you guys start the fucking show with sex? We had parents, grandparents, and even teachers calling in to complain. We haven't even sorted through half of them." Tay.
"But we didn't start the show with sex. I only asked the caller what's the sexiest thing she has done for a date." Krist tries to clarify the misunderstanding.
"Jesus, it was fucking seven in the morning. There's kids listening while their parents have the station on. Do you have any idea how many people tuned out of the show after the first ten minutes? People were calling left and right complaining about how inappropriate the show was today. Fuck!"
"Well, sexiest thing doesn't necessarily mean sex. It wasn't that bad." Singto tries to calm Tay down. He knew this was going to happen. Anything even slightly inappropriate or tabooed is not allowed before eight thirty because children haven't gone to school yet. Tay always want them to spice things up, yet there's a lot to consider such as the audience and the restrictions from upper management.
"Not that bad?!? Shaving balls and getting it off? What the hell were you two thinking? Do you know what I'm going to have to go through if any sponsors pull the plug because of this stunt?" Tay glares between the two men.
"Well, we can't control what the callers would say. How are we supposed to know that the caller would overshare?" Krist doesn't think it's fair to be blamed for what the callers had said on the air.
"Yeah? What about favorite sex positions? What kind of response did you expect to get from that? If someone had called moaning on the air, we would have had live radio porn."
Krist sinks back into his seat. The favorite sex positions was also his topic, but he has used it so many times during his late night show with no problems. What's the big deal now?
"Singto, you know fully well that nothing controversial should be before eight thirty. You're not a rookie. You should have known better. You shouldn't have let this happen." Tay looks at Singto pointedly.
Krist looks at Singto who was staring right back at Tay without even the slightest flinch showing. He couldn't let Singto take the fault. It was he who picked those topics that Singto had no idea about. "Those were my topics. Singto didn't know about them beforehand, so it's not his fault. I should be the one to be blamed."
Tay redirects his murderous eyes towards Krist, and pinches his temples. To be honest, he really doesn't give a shit who's fault it is. All he knows is he is going to have to face his boss about the sudden dive in this morning's numbers, and not to mention the mountainous pile of complaints. He prays that none of the sponsors will react to today's mishap. He can't even imagine the heat he would get if Oishi or Lays pulled their ads from their show. They are big accounts, and they hold the premium time slots. Even a reduction is unthinkable.
"Today is your first day on the morning show. It's your debut for God's sake. You should have been more careful. You're not a rookie either. You should've known this is not the late night show where people are half asleep. I expected you to spice things up, not fuck it up. Do you know how much is on the line? I gave you a chance at a better time slot, but you fucked it up on your first day." Tay hollers so loud that there's a slight echoing vibration in the room.
"Tay, we just didn't have enough time to prepare. It's not completely Krist's fault. It was so last minute. It's hardly fair. Look, we will work it out, and do better tomorrow. What has happened, happened. It's spilt milk. Let's move on, and focus on tomorrow."
"Singto, just because you are the star of the station doesn't mean you get a pass. You have to take some responsibility too for today's disaster."
Singto glares back. He knows today's show wasn't great, but is all this necessary? Tay is always so quick to point his finger at anyone but himself. Has Tay ever asked his opinion about a new co-host? Has he actually thought about their compatibility? And beyond that, Tay didn't even give them time for the transition, or even time to prepare for that matter. All this means to him is that he isn't respected here. He has plenty of offers from other stations. If Tay continues to be an asshole like this, he is walking.
Tay backs down a little seeing Singto's challenging glare. He can't afford to lose Singto at this point, and he definitely didn't want him to join their competition. Singto's contract is coming to an end by the end of the year. He is more than aware of the many competitors vying for their star. He must control himself from exploding at the moment.
Tay looks away from Singto, and points his finger at the door. "You two go get your shit together, and you better pray no sponsors will react. I don't ever want a repeat of today. Now, get out."
Singto gets up, and heads for the door. He couldn't wait to get out of the two-faced devil's lair.
"Singto! Wait!" Krist taps Singto's shoulder to stop him from marching away.
Singto turns around irritatedly, and glares into Krist's eyes. "Yes?"
"Can we talk? I want to apologize for this morning too." Krist tries to look as sincere as possible. Now, he realizes why Singto's topics at the beginning of the list were so boring. And he is a bit ashamed at the fact that he didn't even read Singto's email fully. He had only skimmed through it.
Singto knows they will need to talk it out, and work something out for tomorrow's show anyway. It's unavoidable if they don't want a repeat of today. However, a part of him does feel that all this could have all been avoided if Krist had just listened to him in the first place. He just needs a little time to cool off first.
"Fine. Let's meet for lunch at twelve. We can talk then. I need to go answer the millions of emails from today's show right now." Singto turns and leaves once Krist nods his head in agreement.
Let try again tomorrow.
