18. || Torn Between Realities ||

Ananya was devastated upon realizing that he was not her Dev. She became lost in his face, as it reminded her so much of the one she had loved. She was to be discharged the next day, so he left with tears in his eyes. Overwhelmed by the high dose of medication, Ananya fell into a restless sleep.

The next evening, Dev arranged the discharge papers and entered Ananya's cabin, where she was getting ready, no longer wearing hospital clothes. He announced, "Ana... I mean, Mrs. Joshi, your discharge papers are ready. I'll drop you off at your address since it seems you have no one here..."

Ananya looked at him, her eyes filling with tears as she lost herself in his face. He repeated his request for her to come with him, but she remained silent, staring at him with a glimmer of hope in her eyes.

With a heavy sigh, Dev took her hand and led her to the parking lot. She followed him like a lifeless body, her eyes never leaving his face. Once she was seated in the car, he asked for her address, but she was still lost in thought. Snapping his fingers to bring her back to reality, she finally gave him the hotel address. He dropped her off and left, tears welling up in his eyes.

Ananya entered her room, locked the door, and headed to the washroom. She turned on the shower, leaning against the wall and gripping the shower knob. Her tears mixed with the water as she lamented, "Why, Dev? Why won't you let me live or die in peace? Your memories haunt me, and seeing that face every day feels like torture. I can't endure this pain anymore. Why did I do all that? Why did I ruin myself?"

Meanwhile, Dev was tormented by his memories of her. He whispered to himself, "Why are you so precious to me that my heart loves you with all its might, yet my mind despises you just as intensely? I thought I'd be at peace seeing you suffer, but my soul finds no solace."

Ananya was equally shattered, lost in memories of Dev. Her tears pleaded for mercy, wishing her heart would stop, yet his name echoed with every beat of her heart.

As night fell, Ananya stood by the window, staring at the moon and thinking of Dev. Suddenly, she heard her name, "Ananya." She turned around but saw no one, shivering with fear. "Wh...who's there?" she stammered, but no one answered. She checked the room, found no one, and returned to the window. The sound of music filled the air, making her heart skip a beat.

"Wh...where is this music coming from?" Ananya wondered, stepping out of her room to follow the sound. She felt his presence in the music, her heart and soul surrendering to it. She ran through the dark, chilly night, reaching an abandoned place surrounded by eerie trees. Snow was falling, and the music continued to play.

She wandered around, desperate to see him, feel his presence. With tears streaming down her face, Ananya cried out, "Dev, where are you? I know you're here, close to me, in my breath, in every beat of my heart. Please, come to me, Dev."

The music drove her to madness, her tears flowing freely. Suddenly, Dev grabbed her hand. She smiled, feeling warmth instead of fear. Turning around, she saw Dev. He looked like her Dev, not Debu. Her smile grew as Dev twirled her, and the song "Wajah Tum Ho" began playing in the background.

While twirling her, he hugged her from behind and started dancing. She smiled through her tears, moving to the rhythm. When the song ended, Ananya hugged him tightly and murmured against his chest, "You won't leave me again, will you, Debu?"

Dev hugged her back, closing his eyes as he lost himself in the warmth he had longed for. But soon, anger filled his eyes as he remembered her betrayal. He took out an anesthesia injection and injected it into her neck. Ananya winced in pain before falling unconscious in his arms.

Caressing her face and kissing her forehead, Dev whispered with a strange passion, "This night will haunt your dreams, but your reality will be with Debu. This meeting might be real, but for you, it will feel like a dream, a dream that won't let you live. I was madly in love with you, but now, my madness is because of you."

He carried Ananya back to her room, calling a staff member he had hired. "Tomorrow, if Ananya asks if she went outside or if someone brought her back, you will say no," Dev instructed coldly.

He leaned over Ananya and told the staff while caressing her hair, "And make sure to delete the CCTV footage of her going out and me coming here. Understand?"

The staff nodded and left. Dev returned to his room, but the window to Ananya's room was open. From his balcony, he could see her through the open window. He sat on a couch on his balcony, watching her all night.

---

The morning light filtered through her window, and Debu watched as she slowly regained consciousness. He was already awake, and when he saw her stirring, he quickly went inside, not wanting to be caught off guard.

Ananya opened her eyes and looked around, confusion evident on her face. The last thing she remembered was being in that dense forest with Dev, and now she was back in her bed. She jumped up and rushed outside, desperate to find him.

"Dev! Dev, were you with me last night? Why are you doing this? Where are you, Dev?" she called out, her voice pleading, but there was no response. She searched the entire place but found no one.

Dejected, she returned to her room and sat on the bed, holding her head in her hands. "It...it was a dream. No, no, I felt it. Dev, I went outside," she muttered to herself, tears streaming down her face.

Just then, there was a knock on the door. She opened it to find a hotel staff member holding a breakfast tray.

"I didn't order this," Ananya said gently, trying to make sense of the situation.

The staff member replied, "Ma'am, we received an order for breakfast for room number 203."

Ananya was astonished. She nodded, and the staff placed the breakfast on the table before turning to leave.

"Wait," Ananya called out, stopping him. "Do you know if I went outside last night or if someone came with me?"

The staff member shook his head. "No, ma'am. No one went out or came in from room 203 last night."

Ananya's confusion deepened. She sat on the bed again, thinking, "Was it really a dream? But why do I feel like I went outside, following that music? The same music I used to hear at home..."

Her thoughts were interrupted when she noticed a note on the breakfast tray. She picked it up and read:

In someone's memories, we reside,
But in reality, we cannot abide.
Even in our dreams, we've played a part,
Yet we could not dwell in the heart.
So soon you've forgotten me,
This truth I could not foresee.

She froze, her heart pounding. She knew who had sent the note. Desperate for answers, she rushed to find the staff who had delivered the breakfast, but he was nowhere to be found. She went to the manager, her voice trembling with panic.

"The staff who brought breakfast to room 203—who was he? I need to know who he was!" Ananya demanded.

The manager, calm and collected, replied, "Mrs. Joshi, I'm sorry, but we didn't send anyone to deliver breakfast to your room."

Ananya was horrified. "No, he was here! I recognize his face. I need to know who sent this."

The manager called all his staff, but the one who delivered the breakfast was not among them.

"Sorry, ma'am, but these are all our staff members," the manager said.

The staff was Dev’s hire. After delivering the breakfast, he left the resort.

Ananya, in a perplexed state, walked back to her room, thinking about the note. "Who was he? Who sent this?"

Her phone rang, and she picked it up from the nightstand. The call was from an unknown number. She answered, and the voice on the other end sent a chill down her spine.

"Don't stress your little mind about who it was or where they came from. Whoever it was, they came for you," the voice said before hanging up, leaving Ananya trembling.

Her heart raced as she tried to make sense of what was happening. After a while, she decided to go to the office, but her mind was elsewhere. Lost in the memories of the previous night, she walked like a lifeless body, not realizing she had reached the edge of the stairs.

Dev, coming from the side, saw her and noticed her vacant expression. He sensed that she was unaware of her surroundings. She took a step forward and began to fall, but Dev quickly pulled her into his arms. She fell straight into his embrace, and for a moment, they both got lost in each other's eyes. Dev felt weak as he looked into her dark, soulful eyes.

Suddenly, Dev distanced himself and helped her stand on her feet. He asked, with a hint of worry in his voice, "What were you doing? Where was your mind?"

Ananya didn’t answer, still lost in her thoughts. Dev repeated his question, more insistent this time, "I asked you, what were you thinking? You could have gotten hurt."

Looking straight into his eyes, Ananya replied, "I was lost in a world that now only exists in my memories."

Dev felt her pain but remained silent. As Ananya turned to leave, he stopped her.

"At least have a coffee with me. I've saved you so many times; you can do this for me," Dev said, trying his best to keep his composure.

Tears filled Ananya’s eyes as she remembered the incident in the car. Without a word, she left. Dev smiled inwardly.

Ananya went to the conference room, where Dev also arrived. Throughout the meeting, she kept stealing glances at him, and he caught her every time. When the meeting ended, Dev reminded her about the coffee in the canteen, but she didn't respond and left.

Later, Dev waited for Ananya in the office canteen. He muttered to himself, "You will come, Ananya. I know you will."

Then he saw her approaching with a blank expression. He smiled and waved to get her attention. She noticed him and walked over.

They sat down for coffee. Dev looked at her intently while she seemed lost in thought.

With a playful grin that went unnoticed by Ananya, Dev asked, "Why do you call me Dev?"

Tears welled up in her eyes as her pain resurfaced. She closed her eyes, trying to hold back her tears.

"Because your face is exactly like my husband’s, Dev Joshi," she said, her voice filled with sorrow.

Dev's grin grew wider. "So, where is your husband now?"

Ananya, struggling to control her emotions, replied, "He's no longer in this world."

This revelation shattered Dev. "I'm sorry. What happened to him?"

Ananya's tone turned defensive. "That's a personal matter. It's best if you don't interfere."

Dev pressed on, "But just a while ago, you were considering me part of your personal life. Tell me, what happened?"

Ananya’s heart sank as she remembered how she had betrayed Dev, killing his trust and emotions. Tears rolled down her cheeks, but she couldn't bring herself to tell the truth.

"It was an accident," she said hesitantly.

Dev clenched his fists, looking around to hide his tears. He remembered her betrayal, her fake love. "I'm sorry. I understand the pain of losing someone."

Ananya nodded silently.

Kash tum yahan hote
Ya phir mein whana hota,
Hum dono hote sath agar
Toh kuch alag yeh jahan hota,
Zameen par pair nahi lagte
Ghar apna aasman hota,
Hum dono hote sath agar
Toh kuch alag yeh jahan hota.
