Chapter 6

It was later into the evening and Remus was with Peter, serving so of their last few customers. They were his regulars, coming in for their coffee and lattes. Peter was at the machines this time while Remus chatted with people. He enjoyed it, truly, but was often so scared that he'd end up passing one of his many conditions to the people he helped.

But strangely, he couldn't seem to make himself what to stop working. He'd contemplated quitting many times over, but he desperately needed the money. Remus was trapped in a position one shouldn't wish upon oneself or another.

"Hey Remus, you wanna go to the club with the rest of us? I hear it's karaoke night!" Peter called, looking up from his phone.
"No, I'm okay. I'm kind of tired, anyway." Remus lied, not wanting to say it was for an appointment.
"You want me to close up?"
"No, no, you go have fun. You can leave now if you want." he tried to smile, but his stomach pains were worse now. He needed an appointment soon.
"Alright, thanks. I'll see you tomorrow night."
"See you."

Remus sighed, wiping down the counter once more, before realizing it was as clean as can be. He rubbed his face out of tiredness and exhaustion. He was so tired of everything. Appointments every other week. Barely having any sleep. Pains in his chest and abdomen. Constantly being on the brink of passing out. But he needed to keep working. Remus quickly washed his hands, as to not infect others around him.

He had about ten minutes before closing time. Would it hurt to close up now? But Remus just didn't want to go home. He reveled in the warm scent of coffee and the sweet scents of sugar and whipped cream. He loved the comforting environment that made him feel less problematic. Working there was pure bliss.

He heard the bell attached to the door tinkle just a bit, indicating that someone was entering the shop. He looked up to see a very pretty young woman, maybe a but younger than him, walk in. The first thing he noticed were that the tips of her wavy brown hair were dyed a light pink and that she was listening to music on her headphones, but soon looked around in confusion.

"Are you closing?" she asked suddenly.
Remus deadpanned for a moment, "Uh, yes. But do you want something to eat or drink?"
"That'd be great, thanks." she watched as she stared up at the menu for a moment, "Aw, the hot chocolate sounds so good but I heard your bubble teas were amazing. What do you suggest?" she turned to him.
His eyes widened, not knowing what to say, "Um, a combination of the two?"

Remus mentally scolded himself, stupid, stupid, stupid, you don't say that to a pretty girl, you idiot. How did he get flustered around this girl so easily? Maybe it was that she was pretty? Maybe because she was his last customer? She smiled at him, as if trying to keep hi, from mentally beating himself up.

"That sounds interesting to try," she set her phone in her pocket, "A medium hot chocolate with bubbles, please."
"Okay." a smile crept on his face, "And your name, miss?"
"Um, Tonks."

Remus raised an eyebrow, then tried to look as calm as possible as he scribbled it on the cup.

"It's just," the girl began to explain, "I don't really like my extremely long first name and it's a really weird name anyway. So I go by my surname."
"You haven't thought of nicknames?" he blurted out, then slapped a hand over his mouth, "Sorry."
The lady named Tonks laughed, "No, no it's alright. There are many nicknames for my name and the ones I've been given aren't my favorite."
"Oh. Anyway, it's 3.80."
"Right sorry."

She handed him a five dollar bill and he gave her back her change.

He grinned, then turned to make her hot chocolate with bubble tea bubbles. Strange, but intriguing. He was beginning to like this girl. He glanced over his shoulder to see that she had made herself comfortable at one of the counter seats. Tonks sat with a laptop on the counter, a book on her right hand side, and a pencil case on her left. Her eyebrows were tight in concentration. But her eyelids seemed to droop just a bit, and Tonks furiously rubbed her eyes.

"Your bubble hot chocolate's ready." he said softly.

When she didn't respond, he nudged her just a bit. She didn't answer him. He nudged her a bit harder, and then her eyes flashed open and Tonks nearly jumped out of her seat. Remus slapped a hand over his mouth to keep from laughing. Tonks suddenly seemed to spot the cup sitting in front of her and looked up at him tiredly.

"Thanks..." she squinted at his name tag, "Remus. And sorry about that, I have a project I've been working on lately and haven't gotten much rest."
"Not a problem." Remus answered politely, hoping not to seem like he was judging.

He tried to look as normal as possible and not look like a complete fool as Tonks sipping the hot chocolate bubble tea. She's seriously pretty, he thought, as a blush rose to his cheeks.

Remus figured he'd make a hot chocolate for himself since he was a tad thirsty. Might as well take advantage of the fact that he worked in a coffee shop. He leaned against the counter and sipped the hot chocolate lightly.

"Would you mind if I helped you with that?" he asked quietly, "You seem to be struggling."

Stupid, he scolded himself, now she thinks that you think she's stupid. To his surprise, she smiled.

"That would be wonderful. Because I don't understand a lick of it."

He glanced at her laptop screen, "You're studying health science?"
"Well, yes and no. I'm mainly studying law, but this is just an extra course I thought would be fun to try. Also it'd be a fun job if I couldn't become a lawyer."
"Oh. I mean, genetics looks like a lot of fun."

He looked at the Punnett Square sitting in front of his eyes. This seemed to be about eye color and dominant and recessive genes and such.

"Well, blue eyes are recessive. Brown is dominant."
"I know that. I was looking at this chart." she pointed at a different diagram.
"Oh sorry."

He studied the second one about colorblindness. X and Y chromosomes, 23rd chromosome. Male and female.

"In the 23rd chromosome, if both x genes in a female have the faulty gene, the woman will be colorblind. If the male's x gene carries colorblindness he will be colorblind. And if the gene is only present in one X chromosome, the female will not be colorblind, but will be able to pass on the disorder." he explained.
He spotted a smile grow on Tonks' face, "Thanks. You should be a teacher, you know. You'd be great at it."

He snorted, but then realized that she'd never understand why he'd laughed. As if he was going to be able to get a job with his long list of special conditions. She looked at him confusedly, but that expression turned into a grin. Then glanced at the time on her phone.

"It's getting late, I have to go now. Thanks for the help and the hot chocolate bubble tea." she waved then turned around, heading outside the door.

Strangest customer I've had these past few weeks, he mused, but certainly the most brilliant.
