Chapter 1
"One caramel latte Sirius!"
"You got it, James!"
The two worked in perfect sync, as James took orders and shouted them to Sirius who was near the machines. James' parents didn't expect they actually be able to work at the shop. The pair of best friends had been successfully running the shop for a month now.
Before, this place was a rundown apartment building that no one had lived in for years. The duo had decided to take it upon themselves and to make it into something useful. After only a few months of working, painting, cleaning, and ordering supplies, Sunflower Coffee was open. Sunflowers were his mother's favorite flower, and she'd given them the idea for a coffee shop, so they'd named it for her.
The shop was small, but homely. Near the big display windows in the front sat two long tables with a few chairs on one side. Customers would sit there and sip their coffee as they enjoyed the morning sunlight. There were chairs set by the counter where they handed out and took orders that were farther and closer to the walls. Other than those places, there were tables in the rest of the open space inside the shop. Each table sat two to four people each.
It was small, but James loved his shop more than anything. With the exceptions of his parents and best friend.
His parents were older so he didn't have any siblings. His cousins were distant, so he didn't see much of them. James had met Sirius at a collage they went to, and became best friends ever since. Most people could have mistaken them for brothers since they were together so much. But they looked severely different—James had a light tan complexion, messy brownish black hair, and hazel colored eyes with his own glasses on top while Sirius had shoulder length black hair, a very pale skin tone, and gray eyes that glinted with a devilish streak a mile wide. The only reason James made sure Sirius never worked at the counter was because the customers seemed scared when he looked them in the eyes.
They both wore beige aprons, their usual uniforms and appeared friendly and kind. Even with Sirius' "punk" hair cut.
James grinned as he handed the latte to the man who'd ordered it. Mornings were their busiest times and they needed people to run the night shift. They'd had a sign on their door asking for workers, but so far no one came in except to buy a coffee.
James breathed in deeply. He loved the smell of this place. Sweet and creamy, with hints of chocolate and vanilla. The cookies that were baking in one of the ovens. Warm coffee being made every morning. Fresh sunlight coming through the windows that lit up the whole room with light and warmth. Coming to work here everyday was most enjoyable.
He'd just finished making a mocha cappuccino for another one of his regular customers. James was exceptionally bad at remembering faces and names. If he remembered customer's name, Sirius thought it a miracle and would laugh. He turned around to ask Sirius for another coffee. Then he heard a voice different from the usual ones ordering Frappuccinos and such.
"Hi, I saw a sign that said you were hiring and—" James turned around too suddenly with a latte in his hand as he pushed his glasses up with his other hand and ended up spilling it all over whoever was speaking.
It was a male about his age. Sandy brown hair with amber eyes and pale skin, only a bit lighter than his own. And a seemingly warm sweater even though it was a hotter than average day. The sweater that was now covered in latte and whipped cream. The man looked down in shock, then back up at him, as if utterly confused, but strangely didn't seem offended. As if resigned to it.
He seemed so ... familiar. James couldn't place the face or the name, but he was so very familiar. It lingered in his mind.
"Good job, you prat!" Sirius shouted from the other side of the counter. James turned to glare at him for a moment, then back to his customer.
"Uh, sorry 'bout that. Lemme get you a few tissues and a new latte for the customer. How can I help you?" he replied with a friendly tone as he waved to Sirius for him to make a new coffee.
"Uh, there was a sign that said you were hiring and I'm hoping for a job."
"Right of course, mind waiting for a little while? Morning rush and it's hard to discuss this kind of thing right now."
"Yeah, I can wait." The man looked around for a table.
"That's great, thank you." James finished, "James Potter."
He saw the guy raise an eyebrow but say nothing as he took a seat at the window and pulled out a book to read after wiping down his sweater then removing it and set it back down on the back of his chair. James supposed it was upon hearing his last name. Potter. His dad was the founder of a major hair product company and that's all people thought of when they heard his name. James was shocked that the man knew the name, seeing as he seemed around his age and his generation didn't seem to always be memorizing famous people that weren't always on the news. He also felt bad and should've given the poor guy a coffee of some sort.
James spent that morning regularly taking orders and handing them to people. He occasionally glanced at the guy sitting that the window to see if he'd given up on trying to get the job or not. Every time he looked over there, he'd see the man, casually flipping a page. Sirius also seemed intrigued and confused, seeing as he hadn't ordered a single thing and waited there, reading his book.
"Maybe we should just hire him? He seems like a nice enough guy." Sirius said, as James took a cup from him for the next customer.
"We should talk to him first." he answered, "Appearances can be deceiving."
James made his way over to the man sitting at the window with two frappes in his hands. Sirius stood by the counter, wiping it down as to prepare for their next rush hour sort—evening. In the afternoon, James let Sirius handle the customers since there weren't many. James enjoyed making the coffees and such.
"So, you said you needed a job?" he asked, pushing up his glasses and setting the cups down on the table.
"Yes, it'd be great." The man shut his book and thanked him for the coffee with a nod.
"Well, I suppose we should start with names." James added, raising an eyebrow.
"Right, sorry. I'm Remus. Remus Lupin."
James nearly spat out his coffee.
Hello everyone and welcome back to the world of Harry Potter. I just saw Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald yesterday and it was AWESOME. I'm not going to say anything so I don't spoil a thing.
Anyway, what do you think of the first chapter? I'd love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and requests.
See you in another two-three days,
Abby
