Chapter 5: Her Smile
And she smiles… oh the way she smiles
Andy’s P.O.V.
I wake up facing the wall. I blink slowly and sit up. My ribs don’t hurt anymore, as it’s been three days. Today is the day that I can finally go home. Beau isn’t here, which relieves me. I hate waking up to him watching me. It makes me wonder what he did to me while I was sleeping. A nurse bustles in.
“Good morning!” she chirps.
“Guten Morgan,” I say in reply.
The nurse looks frustrated and I fight the urge to laugh. I’ve been practicing my German by speaking only German to the nurses, and they get angry when they can’t understand, but they can’t yell at me, so it really is quite amusing.
“What did you say?” she asks politely.
“Guten Morgan,” I repeat, and I bite back a laugh as she looks even more confused.
“What does that mean?” she asks.
I shrug. “Ich weiss nicht,” I say innocently.
The nurse chooses not to reply, as I would only confuse her further. She checks my ribs and asks me if it hurts or not. Being a model patient, I nod and shake my head so she can understand. Finally, the nurse straightens up.
“You’re all good,” she says, smiling.
“Gut!” I clap my hands like a small child and grin wildly.
The nurse’s smile broadens. Apparently, she has guesses what I said and that I was happy.
“I’ll be sad to see you go,” she sighs. “You were a good patient, even if I didn’t understand what you were saying most of the time.”
I smile at this. It’s been a while since someone has actually wished to see me again.
“Your boyfriend is so cute,” she smiles at me, clearly expecting me to blush under the compliment.
Instead, the smile is wiped off my face and I feel slightly afraid. The nurse frowns. Apparently, she noticed my lack of excitement.
“What’s wrong?” she inquires, coming back over.
Great, now I have a nurse worried about my relationship with my boyfriend.
“Nichts,” I say quickly, trying for an innocent smile.
I don’t think the nurse is convinced, but just then, Beau walks in. I quickly patch a smile on my face and try to appear as though we’re having a nice conversation. The nurse smiles at him, apparently under the impression that he’s a lovely boy, when in reality he’s a cruel and abusive man.
“She was lovely,” the nurse chirps. “I’ll be sad to see her go.”
“That’s how I felt for the past three days,” he smiles, making her swoon.
“You two were very cute,” she promises. “Especially when you two were sleeping together!” she covers her mouth, letting slip that she was watching us sleep. “I-I mean,” she stammers.
“It’s all right,” Beau interrupts her, putting her mind at ease. “It’s not like we noticed.”
I keep my mouth shut. I knew that they were in here, and that they took pictures. Beau and the nurse have several more exchanges; with each one Beau charms the nurse. Even though I shouldn’t I can’t help but feel a little jealous of the lack of attention. I wonder if Beau gets jealous when he sees me talk to boys.
Finally, Beau turns his gaze to me. “How are you feeling?” he asks gently.
Even though this is an act for the nurse, I feel a little like a teenage girl again. “Better, I reply. “They don’t really hurt anymore.”
“That’s good,” Beau flashes a mega-watt smile. “I’ll be glad to have you back home.”
Yeah, so you can abuse me, I think, but I don’t say my thoughts out loud. I simply smile and play for the nurse. As I get ready to brave the public world again, Beau handles my paperwork, signing things and getting me released from the hospital. When I am ready, I walk down to the lobby. Beau sees me and smiles.
“Go wait in the car,” he says, pulling me closer and pressing a kiss to my temple. I feel like pushing away, but I am in public. It would clue people in that something is wrong.
“Okay,” I say, and skip off.
So busy am I with my skipping that I don’t notice a person walking in the opposite direction. I crash into a warm chest and topple backwards. Landing on my bum, I look at the person I ran into and recognize them. It’s the boy from the supermarket.
He helps me up. “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t watching were I was going-” he pauses and looks at my face. “Hey, aren’t you the girl I crashed into at the supermarket?”
I smile. “Yup, that’s me,” I say cheerfully.
He smiles, and I inwardly swoon. He has a really nice smile.
Louis’ P.O.V.
“We seem to spend more time on the ground then actually talking to each other,” I say, smiling.
The girl laughs. “That is true.”
Her smile makes my heart thud in my chest. I like her smile. Quick, say something funny so she smiles again.
“So how was your day, besides spending a couple seconds on the ground?” I ask, sticking my hands in my pockets.
She laughs. “Highlight of my day, actually.”
I smile, and suddenly feel awkward. I don’t know what to say next. What’s wrong with me? I usually always have a joke or something funny to say to break the silence. This girl is making me nervous.
“I don’t think we’ve been properly introduced,” I say and hold out my hand. “I’m Louis.”
“Andy,” she replies, pumping my hand.
That’s an interesting name. “I like your name,” I tell her. “It’s interesting.”
“I always think of Toy Story,” she complains. “People used to tease me about that.”
“Well, I love Toy Story,” I inform her, and am rewarded by another smile.
Hey eyes drop to my shirt. “I like your shirt,” she says.
Automatically, my eyes drop to see what I am wearing. I’m wearing my blue Superman shirt. I haven’t worn it in forever and I found it the other night when I got kicked out of a Laundromat.
“Thank you,” I say. “I love Superman.”
“Me too,” she says. “He’s my favorite superhero.”
“Have you seen Man of Steel?” I inquire.
Andy pouts and shakes her head and I can’t help but think that it is the most adorable thing ever. “No, I don’t get to movie theaters often,” she says.
“I haven’t seen it either,” I confess. “But I want to!”
She laughs and I smile, simply admiring her smile. Suddenly, her eyes flick to the hospital doors and back. Who knew we were by a hospital?
“I have to go,” she says.
My spirits drop. Here I was, feeling lonely, and I meet a nice girl with an amazing smile and she has to go.
“Nice to meet you Andy,” I reply.
“Nice to meet you too, Louis,” she says, mocking me.
I’m about to say a snappy comment in return when she suddenly stands on her tiptoes and presses her lips to my cheek. My comment dies on my lips and I stand there like an idiot while she scurries off in the opposite direction.
“Bye!” she waves and I manage to wave my fingertips in response.
I stand there, blocking people walking to work and stare stupidly at the direction Andy disappeared to. All I can think about is her smile. Which is good, considering all I usually think about it Eleanor. I shake my head a little when I picture my ex-girlfriend, waiting for my depressing moments to come back, when I picture Andy’s smile again. I find myself smiling slightly when I picture her and her laugh. The way she smiles… oh God the way she smiles…
