Chapter 4: Spell her Name

"She's watching the clouds roll by and they spell her name, like Lois Lane."

Andy’s P.O.V.

I wake up confused. I’m certain I fell asleep in my flat. I don’t know where I am and the thought sends fear pulsing through me. I sit bolt upright and the room turns blinding white. I lift a hand to my eyes and something tugs at my arm. I blink and look at it.

“Calm down,” a voice says.

I blink rapidly and look next to me. Beau sits next to me, looking shattered. Suddenly, I know where I am. I’m in a hospital. I feel like asking why, but then I feel a pounding in my head and moan, clutching my hand to my temple.

Beau reaches for me. “What hurts?” he asks gently.

I stare at him like he is a dog that has just spoken. Who is this person? The Beau I know would smack me for complaining. This is the Beau that I fell in love with. For a second, I feel happy that Beau, the one I actually loved, is coming back to me. Then, I mentally slap myself.

Beau is gone, I tell myself. He hurts you and doesn’t care about you.

When I don’t answer, Beau’s face hardens. He jabs my side and I wince at the sharp pain.

“That hurt?” he whispers maliciously.

He’s about to do it again when the doctor walks in. he smiles when he see’s I’m awake.

“Good, you’re awake,” he says, bustling over to check up on me. “Anything hurt?”

“MY ribs,” I say, putting a hand to them. “And I have a headache.”

“That’s understandable, as you have a fractured rib and a slight concussion,” the doctor says sympathetically.

I begin to relax with the doctor in the room. He will not let Beau hurt me.

“How did you sustain these injuries?” the doctor asks.

“Fell down a flight of stairs,” I say quickly, pulling a random idea from my head.

The doctor raises an eyebrow. “Stairs? Really.”

“Long staircase,” I say, sneaking a glance and Beau.

To my relief, the doctor accepts this explanation and leaves the matter be, checking on my ribs and giving me shots.

“You’ll have to stay here for a couple days to heal,” the doctor says.

“What?” Beau and I yelp at the same time.

The doctor is confused. “You need to heal. A concussion and broken ribs is no laughing matter. Why do you need to get home so badly?”

“I have a job,” I say, lying again.

“Well, I’m sure under the circumstances that they won’t mind if you miss a couple days,” he says.

“I’ll tell them,” Beau says quickly. “Thank you doctor.”

The doctor takes this as a dismissal and walks out of the door, scribbling madly on his clipboard.

I feel my safety leave with the doctor. I glance at Beau. He smiles at me.

“Good job,” he praises, leaning close to my face. “That was some fancy lying.”

I nod, too afraid to speak.

“Guess I won’t have to punish you now,” Beau says a glint in his eye.

I involuntarily shiver, wondering what he would have done to me. Instead, Beau smiles slightly.

“Cold?” he asks then moves so he is lying on my bed with me.

Beau is careful for my ribs as he moves me so I am laying partially on him. He wraps his arms around my waits and sighs deeply. This makes my chest hurt. Not my ribs, my heart. Beau and I used to cuddle all the time. I blink hard a couple times and Beau presses his lips to my cheek.  I tense up.

“Relax,” he whispers, my hair moving slightly under his breath.

I relax under his warm grip and snuggle into him. We don’t talk, and eventually I hear Beau’s deep breathing, signaling that he is asleep. I really should be sleeping too, but after my nap for most of the day, I’m not tired.

I turn my head and glance out the window. The sun is rising over New York City, illuminating the skyscrapers. It’s really quite beautiful, unlike me. Beau shifts under me and his hand pushes against my ribs. I wince and put a hand to my ribs.

They don’t hurt as much, but they do still hurt. Almost as if he can sense my pain, Beau moves and I hurt the mattress with a soft thud. It doesn’t hurt and Beau spoons me, holding me gently. Instead of Beau, I find myself imagining the boy from the supermarket. He was sweet, and I’m sure he does this to his girlfriend. I find myself imagining him holding me like his and a smile spreads across my face. This boy, he saved me from Beau. I owe him a lot.

Suddenly, a nurse barges in and stops suddenly when she sees us cuddling on the bed. My bubble bursts and it’s Beau who’s cuddling me, not the boy that I met. Beau, who put me here in the first place.

“Aww, they’re so cute,” the nurse coos. “They’re so in love. Come here, look at this!”

I keep my eyes closed as several nurses file into the room, oohing and awing as they see us together on the bed.

“It’s so adorable how he waited here for her,” one nurse whispers.

“He probably has to get to work but he chose to stay here with her,” another nurse says knowingly.

I have to fight my laughter. If only they knew.

“Should we wake them up?” yet another nurse questions.

“No,” the first nurse replies. “Let them sleep. She needs it.”

I think they are going to leave when suddenly a flash shines through my closed eyelids and I hear a click. Great, they’re taking pictures.

Finally, though, they leave and I sigh in relief and open my eyes.  I spend the next half hour or so watching the world outside my window.

New York City is a busy city, and I watch as people shuffle to work and taxi drivers yell at each other.

Mostly though, I watch the clouds. I feel like a small child as I pick a cloud and figure out what shape it is. I laugh in delight when I spot a rabbit, a castle, and a dragon. Then, I see a cloud that wipes the smile off my face.

I swear, it spells Andy. It’s like the sky is telling me something. Soon, I begin to see my name everywhere. I lay there, watching the clouds roll past my hospital window as they spell my name.
