Meghna

"Good Afternoon Ar..umm..Sir" I said smiling at him nervously.

"Yeah! Good Afternoon Meghna" Arjun said passing me a smile which was enough to make my day better.

"Well, I heard that you are done with the presentation already" he said.

"Yes sir" I said tucking the loose strand of my hair behind my ear.

"That's great! Hope you didn't find any difficulty in doing it" he said picking up some file from the table.

"umm..No" I said shaking my head. He nodded at me. I just stood their waiting for him to say something but he didn't. He was so engrossed in work, typing away furiously on his laptop and all I did was observe him. Minutes passed by, but I still kept staring at him.

How can someone look this perfect?

I heard him clear his throat, making me come back to my senses. I gave him an awkward smile, utterly embarrassed about getting caught ogling at him but he didn't seem to mind.

"um..I actually called you because Miss.Mehra told me that she will be getting the presentation now" He said making me look at him once again.

"Oh" was all I could say. I felt nervous all of a sudden.

What will he say?

Will he like it?

What if he doesn't?

My list of thoughts broke, when the door clicked open and Tina graciously walked inside.

"Oh! You are here already, I thought to call you later" Tina said eyeing me from head to toe. I squirmed under her gaze.

"I called her myself Miss.Mehra" Arjun stated in a business tone.

"Oh okay! Anyways, here is the pendrive. I didn't check the presentation yet as I was a bit busy but I guess you will like it" Tina said smirking at me.

Oh no! She is definitely upto something!!

Nonetheless I maintained my calm demeanor waiting for the scene to unfold before me.

"Yeah! Let me see" Arjun said latching the pendrive to his laptop.

After two minutes or so, Arjun still kept clicking several times. There aren't any other files expect for one folder with the presentation file in it.

"umm...The file is empty!" Arjun said lifting his head from the laptop to look at me. My eyes shot up in surprise as I glanced at him.

"What? Let me see" Tina said moving towards him.

"Yeah! There is no content in it!" She said sounding surprised, glancing at me.

"But I checked it before giving it to you this morning" I said recalling how I checked the presentation twice before handing it over to her.

"Oh! So you mean that I did something to the presentation?" Tina said in an irritated tone. I mentally rolled my eyes.

"What? No! I didn't mean it that way" I said in a calm voice.

"I don't think so" Tina said looking at me seriously and continued "You didn't do it in first place, Isn't it?" She narrowed her eyes.

"What! No! I did it" I said raising my voice in irritation.

"Oh really? Are we supposed to be--" Tina said but was cut off by Arjun.

"Miss. Mehra!" Arjun said in a firm tone.

"I guess you haven't copied it properly, you do have a copy of it right?" Arjun asked looking straight into my eyes.

"I don't think she is hav--" Tina spoke but Arjun called her out again stopping her in between.

"I have it sir" I said nodding my head.

"Good, just copy it again & show it to me" Arjun said smiling at me.

"Okay sir" I said returning his smile with a small one of my own.

He passed me the pendrive and I took it from him looking at him. He gave me a reassuring smile and with that I was out of his cabin but not before giving a death glare towards her.

I know she definitely has something to do with else how will it be lost?

I walked towards my cubicle and settled down. I took deep breaths in order to calm my mind.

I really cannot believe that she did something like this.

Stupid woman!!

Luckily I am having another copy of it in my lappy else all my hardwork would have gone waste.

This time I am going to directly give it to Arjun, no matter what!

With several thoughts crossing my mind, I switched on my laptop. The time it took to start felt like forever. Finally, my desktop showed up with a smiling picture of mine as background.

I looked for the folder named 'presentation' on the desktop but it is no where to be found. I searched for it but no use, I couldn't find it anywhere.

Where did I kept the file?

I am pretty much sure that I saved it on the desktop for easy access.

But where is it now?

I once again checked each and every icon on the screen when I came across an icon of some game.

When did I install this game?

I was wondering when something struck into my mind.

flashback

*Sunday Evening*

"Mahesh! What are you doing with your sister's laptop?" I heard my mom asking my brother.

"Mom! She isn't using it now. So, I took it" he said busily switching it on.

"Did you ask her first? she was working on it just sometime ago" my mom said in a stern voice.

"Di, can I have your laptop, I got a new game from my friend. My lappy isn't working so..." He said giving me his puppy eyes.

Idiot! He knows me so well.

"Okay but make sure to put it on charging after you use it" I said smiling at him.

"Mahi..Wait! I will type in the password and give it" I said holding his arm to stop him.

"It's okay di! I know your password" he said and ran into his room.

Oh great! He even knows my password!!

I quickly got dressed and went to meet Karan & Riya as planned.

I quickly checked my watch, it's almost 4 PM. My brother would be at home by now. I took my phone and called him.

"Hello di!" Mahesh said as soon as the call got connected.

"Hi Mahi! Did you by any chance deleted any files from my laptop yesterday?" I asked him coming straight to the point.

"hmm..No.." he said but when I was about to reply he continued speaking "umm..Wait di! I think I deleted some files on the desktop screen. There wasn't enough space to install the game so...I deleted some two three files" Mahesh said taking his own sweet time in letting me know the bad news.

Oh no!

"You should have asked me once before deleting them Mahesh!" I said raising my voice in irritation. I never call him Mahesh unless I am completely pissed.

"I thought to tell you once but you were not there at home" he said his voice low.

"Do you know how important those files are?" I said, my voice came out harsher than I intended.

"Sorry di! I didn't know else I would have not deleted them" he said, his voice laced with guilt. I immediately regretted talking to him in such a harsh tone. I knew what he did was wrong but he really wouldn't have done it if he knew that they were important.

"I am really sorry di!" I heard him say breaking my thoughts.

"It's okay Mahi! But don't forget to tell me next time before you do something in my laptop" I said keeping my voice calm.

"Okay di!" He said.

"Bye!" I said frowning at his voice.

"Bye di!" He said and hung up.

I closed my eyes, rubbing my fingers on my forehead to ease my headache.

What shall I do now?

My complete hardwork of two days went into vain just like that. Do I have any other option now?

I tried to retrieve my file but I couldn't. To my utter luck, I even cleared the recycle bin today morning.

What to do now??

I can't just make that presentation within hours. What will I show Arjun now? I told him that I have a copy of it but now I don't!!

Time passed by, I couldn't come to any conclusion on what I should do now. I tried talking to Riya but she was very busy as she didn't meet the deadlines so I couldn't bring myself to disturb her.

I finally decided to go and talk to Karan hoping he would help me.

What can he possibly do? You were irresponsible! taunted my brain.

Atleast he would suggest me something right! I reasoned myself and started walking towards his cabin. Just when I was about pass by Arjun's cabin, the door opened and Arjun walked out.

"Oh! Meghna, I was wondering where were you?" Arjun said as soon as he noticed me.

"umm..Sir..." I trailed off not knowing what else to say.

"What happened? You said you will copy it again and bring it" he said walking inside into his cabin. I silently tagged along with him.

What should I tell him now?

"Meghna!" I heard Arjun calling me.

"umm...yeah" I said lifting my head to look at him.

"Where is the presentation? Did you copy it?" He asked making me bit my lip in nervousness. I just shook my head.

"What's wrong? Is their any problem?" He asked me.

"umm..Sir, I...I...couldn't copy the umm...file" I managed to tell some part of it trying very hard not to stutter.

"But why?" He said slightly annoyed.

"BecauseIlostthebackupfile" I said it all in one breath. I guess he might not understand even a bit.

"What?" He said utterly confused.

"Because I lo...lost the backup fi...file" I finally said it casting my look towards the floor which felt much more interesting to me at that moment.

I waited for Arjun to say something but I heard the voice I hate most. Yes! You guessed it right. It was none other than Tina.

"Oh wow! I knew you would come up with something like this" she said entering Arjun's cabin. I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion at her statement. What does she mean by that??

"Why can't you just admit that you haven't done it in the first place?" She said raising her voice at me. I looked at her in disbelief.

"No! No! I did it! It's just..just that I lost it" I said looking through my lashes at Arjun. He seems to be in deep thought. I cannot point out what he is thinking right now.

"Stop lying, will you?" Tina said making me angry.

How can she say something like that??  All of this is because of her. Isn't it??

"I am not lying. Why do you think I would lie about something like this?" I asked her in a serious tone. I observed Arjun looking at me.

"Oh is it, then show us where is the work you have done?" She said challenging me.

"I already told you that I los--" I was trying to explain but Tina cut me off in between and started speaking.

"You think, you can make us believe all your stupid excuses, then sorry you are so wrong because I know what all you did, you were very much busy hanging out with your so called best friends and was busy chatting with your friend or whatever he is to you" Tina said infuriating me further. I know she was referring to Karan, Riya & Aditya. I didn't like the way she talked about me. It isn't her place at all. I decided that whatever she says, I only owe an explanation to Arjun and nobody else. I turned to look at him once before taking a deep breath to tell him what all happened in reality.

"umm..Sir..I actually did the presentation but I kinda lost it...If you give me.." I was trying to explain him but he suddenly lifted his head and looked at me making me stop my talk. I nervously waited for him to say something.

"You should have told me if you are not interested in doing this presentation Miss.Meghna. I would have asked someone else to do it instead of you" Arjun said making my eyes go wide in disbelief.

"I am sorry sir..." I apologized and continued trying to tell him that it's not what he is assuming it to be. He lifted his hand indicating me to stop. I saw Tina smirking at me.

"I am sorry to say this but I am disappointed with you" Arjun said with some unexplainable emotion in his eyes. A lump formed in my throat as I controlled the tears which were ready to spill out of my eyes. I bit my lower lip in order to control my emotions. I took a deep breath and braced myself to speak what I wanted to no matter whether they will accept it or not.

"I am sorry to disappoint you but I am never the kind of person that pretends to work when in reality they don't. I have worked on the presentation but I lost it due to some circumstances. If you give me some more time, I will make the presentation again and give it to you directly this time" I said trying very hard not to break down into tears before him.

"You don't have to do it, it's enough what you have done this time" Tina said moving closer to Arjun.

"You may leave now" Arjun said, his voice cold and distant, making me swiftly look at him. I didn't know what to say anything else other than what I had already said. I just nodded my head and rushed out of his cabin but before I could completely walk out of his cabin I heard Tina say "You need not worry Arjun,I will make the presentation for you"

I immediately walked out and rushed into the ladies washroom as I could no longer control the tears threatening to spill out of my eyes.

Okay! Before you all hit me, this is what I had planned all along. Even, I didn't like writing something like this between Arjun & Meghna but this has to happen.😅
