Twenty-One: Animal Hearts

Mr. Harriman stood at the front of the classroom with his textbook and a whiteboard marker. His eyes trailed around the school, looking for a student to victimize while I was busy thinking about that kiss. I couldn't get it out of my mind. It was as if that dirty little son of a bitch got to me somehow. One word about that, and my ego was dead.

"Ah, Ms. Hart. Would you mind telling us what chromosomes appoint a person with an XX chromosome?" I flipped my head up from the desk.

Was it weird that I didn't hear a word that he said. "Um, a female," I guessed, trying not to zone out again. I looked in the back of me. Cece's smirk faded into her frown lines, forming a scowl.

"That's correct, Emily. Next time pay attention in my class, and you won't have to guess," Mr. Harriman said. The classroom erupted in quiet giggles. I rolled my eyes, laid my head back on my desk, and listened.

"Now, because Emily missed what I said, I will go over this again for her," Everyone groaned, rolling their eyes.

"Each sperm has an X and Y chromosome, and all eggs have an X chromosome. As we went over, a person with an XX chromosome is typically female, and a person with XY is male. Does that make sense?"

Yep.

I lifted my thumb and nodded, keeping my head down. Finally, the bell rang, saving me from this boring lecture, and I jumped from my seat, grabbing my backpack from the back of my chair.

"Wait, Emily, come," Mr. Harrison called as I approached the door. I made my way over, shuffling my feet as I went. The room was empty and quiet. It was just him and me. I pulled a chair up to his desk and sat down. He looked down at me, playing with a pen in his left hand.

"I'm not a fucking dog," I muttered.

"Did something happen in book club?" I shook my head. I wasn't sure I wanted to get into this right now.

"Nope, everything's cool." I nodded.

"Because you know you can tell me if something did, you know, happen," he replied. He sounded sincerely genuine, but it would not make me say anything.

"Nope."

"Okay, just checking," he said, nodding as I rose from my seat. I pulled the chair away and made my way out of the classroom.

I made my way down the hallway toward the girl's bathroom. I had to pee badly. Pushing my way through the hall, I bumped into, you guessed it, Aaron.

"Hey, how did book club go?" he asked, walking with me as I quickened my steps. "I guess I missed my opportunity to ask you yesterday."

Did I ask you to worry about me, though? "Oh, it was fine. I don't think I'm going back," I replied, picking up pace.

"What, why?" he asked, shuffling with me as I pulled myself through mobs of students who seemed to enjoy crowding the hallways.

"Oh, well, because, stuff."

His eyebrow shot upward. "What stuff?"

"Oh, just stuff," I replied, trying to find a bathroom. But, damn, how far do I have to go to find a lady's restroom here?

"Am I supposed to read your mind?" he shot back. I flipped around, irritated, having to pee.

"Look, I have to pee. Nick kissed me, okay. He fucking kissed me." I couldn't believe that had just slipped out of my mouth.

"Who kissed you?" he questioned, looking hesitant.

"Nick, he wouldn't give me my keys, and the little fucker told me I would have to kiss him on the cheeks to get them back. Then, when I wasn't looking, he turned his head and kissed me."

"Okay," he laughed. "What would you like me to do?"

I don't fucking know.

"Look, buddy. You're not my fucking dad. I don't need your help." I snapped, pushing past him down the hallway, trying to find the fastest way to the bathroom while Aaron trailed behind me.

"What happened in the cafeteria wasn't your fault. Why don't you tell him?" his voice echoed through an empty hallway.

"I don't want to," I said, finally finding the women's restroom. I walked in, and he stopped at the entrance. Ha, I thought he was going to go in.

"I think you should tell him," he yelled into the girl's restroom. I laughed, unzipping my jeans and pulling them down by my ankles.

As I peed, I heard footsteps on the cold, hard pavement. I quickly pulled my underwear up over my thighs and zipped my pants. Peering through a peephole in the door, I gasped.

Well, shit. Cecelia and her girl's group of three blind mice stood at the middle sink, applying bloody red lipstick to her plump lips. I panicked, unaware of what I should do.

"There is no way that bitch will ever win prom queen," Cece slapped her lips together in the mirror, puckering them like a fish. Jennifer and Jessica laughed.

"As if. That nerd boy keeps giving her false hope and we are all doomed." Jessica puckered her lips and smacked them together twice, kissing the air in the mirror.

"I heard she was pregnant last spring with Easton's baby," Jennifer stated.

Cecelia snorted, "It's no wonder she's such a fat, slutty whore. She pulls her pants down for just about anyone."

My pee drizzle stopped, and I quietly wiped, as Cece snapped her head in the direction of my stall. "Who's here," she called out. I instinctively ignored her.

"Anyway, the bitch has karma coming her way. If she wants a show, we'll give her one."

"Yeah," Jennifer and Jessica agreed with her. Then, the trio of mean girls trailed out of the bathroom, and Aaron knocked.

"Emily, you were pregnant with Easton's child?" He called into the room. I zipped up my pants, and exited the stall, staring straight into Aaron's blue eyes from outside the restroom.

"I can explain," I said, and now that the cat was out of the bag, I guess I had no choice.
