Keith slumped against the hallway wall, hoping there was no one around. He slipped out his cigarette, and lit it in all one fluid motion. He was exhausted.

It was 5th period, and he was so ready to leave. He wanted to go home and ride his motorcycle even though it was illegal for him to.

Who cared?

He was turning down the hall, ready to leave the building altogether, when out came a few boys from the bathroom.

They glanced at Keith, then stopped and smirked.

"Lookie, Lookie boys. It's Brendon Urie's husband." One chuckled.

James Griffin.

"Heh, emo." Said another, one of his lowly sidekicks.

Keith scowled. "Leave me the fuck alone."

"Oh, no. I don't think I will." James said. He stepped up and pushed Keith hard, shoving him against the wall. Keith's cigarette fell from his mouth.

"Asshole." Keith spat, pushing him off. James' men came and held Keith back, so all he could do was sit and watch James clock him in the jaw.

Keith felt the searing pain reverberate through his skull, as he slumped down onto the floor. He felt numb sensations as the boys kicked him in the stomach and head.

"Hey! What the crap??" Came a high pitched voice.

James and his boys stopped and turned to see a little girl coming down the hallway. She wore a black blouse and jeans, with a green hoodie. She frowned.

Then she saw Keith's crumpled body. She dropped her bag and ran over.

"Hey darling," James said, reaching a hand to her chin.

She swatted him away. "Don't fucking touch me." She said kneeling down to Keith's side.

"Why did you guys do this?" She asked, trying to shake Keith awake.

"Because this dumb fuck keeps messin with us." Barked one of James' boys.

Pidge glared up at them over her shoulder. "Well you dumb fucks better get away from him. I'm not joking, and I'm already in a bad mood."

"Oh, you lil shit-" said one of the boys, rolling up his sleeves and advancing.

"Boys, boys," James said smoothly, holding his friends back. "Let's just go, wouldn't want the little lady getting mad over us hurting her boyfriend right?" He teased.

He's not my boyfriend, Pidge thought. I don't know the guy.

"Bye, sweetheart." James said, winking at her before turning away with his boys. Pidge shivered in disgust.

"Hey," Pidge said, shaking Keith harder. "Hey! Wake up."

He finally stirred, facing her with a bloody nose and bruised jaw. He squinted. "Who are you?"

She shrugged. "Are you ok?"

He seemed to remember where he was. He glanced down at his wasted cigarette and groaned, sitting his head back against the wall. "...no."

"What did those guys beat you up for?" Pidge asked. She slid her bookbag over to her, quickly pulling out what little first aid supplies she had.

"Dumb shit, I didn't do anything." Keith said as he pulled out another cig.

"Uh-uh. NO." Pidge said snatching the cigarette away from him.

Keith's eyes set ablaze."What the fuck?"

"Smoking is bad for you." She said, placing a tissue under his nose. He snatched the tissue from her, putting the pressure on himself.

"I don't need you to tell me what I already know." He stood up. "It's good for me."

She scoffed and rolled her eyes as he started down the hall.

"You're welcome!" She called after him. He lifted his middle finger up over his shoulder, before leaving the building.

...

Pidge sat on the cold bathroom stall floor, trying to will the tears away.

They're just bullies, it's all lies.

She tried to tell herself.

She wiped her cheek and sniffed, this was the third time this week.

I am beautiful.

I am valid.

I am-

I-

She started balling. She was tired of this fucking bullshit. Why were the girls so mean here?

"They're just jealous honey, that's all." Her mom had said.

But jealous of what?

Her flat chest?

Her short hair?

Her glasses?

The tears kept coming and they wouldn't stop. But she had to get out of here. She was stronger than this.

She pulled herself together, she couldn't go back to class.

She wiped the fog and tears off her glasses before leaving the stall. She splashed cold water on her face, hoping it would wash away the pain.

She didn't want to be gorgeous, and she didn't want to be like the other girls.

She wanted to be accepted, for who she already was.

The halls were silent as she slowly made her way to the library.

Then she heard the snickers.

Giggles.

She saw the sneers before she turned around.

"Hey, bookie." It was Nyma, her stunning brown hair cascading over her olive skin. Her plump lips turned into a scowl. "Lost again?"

Pidge stared at her feet.

"Don't argue sweetie, just stay in your lane." Her dad had said. She sped up.

"You always run from us, we just want to talk." Said one of the other girls.

"Coward."

"Midget."

"Why does she look like that? Think she is abused?"

"Probably. If my daughter looked like that, I would abuse her too."

"Why is she flat though? Is she binding or whatever it's called-"

"Shut up!" Pidge said, finally snapping. The tears were back, but this time they were angry ones.

"Does this make you feel better about yourselves?" She screamed at them.

"Oh heh made you mad didn't w-"

"I didn't ask for your opinion. Just shut the hell up." Pidge retorted. She flipped them all off, then turned, walking away quickly.

Keith saw it all.

The second Pidge was out of the hall, he made his presence known.

"Hey, ladies."

Nyma and her posse turned to see Keith walking towards them, black skinny jeans and loose suspenders over a red button up. He cracked his knuckles.

"Keith. Hi~" Nyma said, batting her eyelashes and smiling sweetly.

He walked up close to her. "Hey." She blushed.

Then he punched her.

In the nose, cold and hard.

Her nose exploded with blood, and her friends screamed as she started crying uncontrollably.

Keith backed away, they say you aren't supposed to hit a girl. But Keith doesn't see gender when it comes to injustice.

He smirked as he heard Nyma crying louder.

There, now he didn't owe Pidge anything.

----------------

When Pidge heard Nyma got the shit knocked out of her, she was scared.

Was someone watching her?

Did that mean someone was looking out for her?

No one at the school had been nice to her, ever. Except for a few teachers.

She was used to being alone. But maybe, she could... have a friend?

The idea made her mood a little better, and she looked everywhere for the mystery girl who had knocked out Nyma.

Then the news leaked that it wasn't a girl.

It was a guy.

Keith Kogane.

Who was that?

...

Keith felt himself grow tired. His food was cold, and he wasn't hungry. He sat at the back of the cafeteria, smoking a cig.

He needed to get out of this place. This school. This town.

The people here made him sick, they were all acidic and fake.

Well, except maybe her..

Pidge. She had helped him after all.

He shrugged the thought away, pulling out his headphones.

Then he stopped. Halfway across the cafeteria. A mob was growing.

He narrowed his eyes.

Somebody was in the middle of the mob, getting kicked and punched. Spat on.

"Fuck." Keith said, always the bullies.

As he got closer, he could see some glasses, thrown across the nasty floor. Caught a glimpse of honey hair. A green hoodie.

Pidge.

He moved faster, practically jogging over to the group. He didn't know what made him do it, but he had to get her out of there. Now.

"Get the fuck away from her!" He barked, causing the group to split down the middle.

Pidge was there, a bloody patch on her head, with blood dribbling from her nose. Where the fuck were the teachers???

She was unconscious, and Nyma and her gang stood there kicking her sides. "You sent him after us didn't you?? You bitch!" they spat on Pidge's still body.

"Move." Keith said, pushing himself up next to her. He glared at Nyma, her eyes widening. Her and her girls went silent.

Keith knelt down and scooped Pidge up bridal style, before walking away.

He waited for her to wake up, sitting in a vacant classroom on the third floor. She was starting to stir.

She glanced at him, warily.

Keith had done his best with a wet paper towel to clean the wound on her head and stop her nosebleed. She sat up.

"They attacked me because of you, you know."

Keith frowned. "Yeah."

"Why did you punch her? She thinks I set you up to it. I don't even know you."

"I saw her bullying you Pidge, I wanted to help. I hate bullies."

Pidge scowled. "How do you know my name?"

"Everyone knows you." Keith sighed. "I'm Keith."

Pidge rolled her eyes. "Whatever."

"I wanted to repay you." Keith said.

"For the thing with James. Thanks." He added.

Pidge shrugged. "I guess you're welcome."

She sighed. "You know, this is so fucked up. I came here to learn but I can't even breathe without feeling like I'm going to get attacked for my flat chest or short stature..." She lifted a hand to her head.

Keith sat back on the palm of his hands. "I know. I hate this place, and all the people in it."

Pidge laughed. "Great, now you hate me too."

Keith smacked himself. "Wait, wait. Sorry no. I don't hate you."

"It's mutual." She said before standing up.

"Where are you going?"

"To learn, duh." She said.

Keith cocked his head. "You aren't gonna like...rest or..?"

"Nothing is going to stop me from getting my education." She said, and with that she left him alone in the classroom.

...

The next few days, they ended up sitting together at lunch. And walking to their classes together.

They had a silent agreement that they would do what they could to protect each other, to stick together.

Days turned to weeks, and they actually became friends. Keith loved Pidge's spunk and determination, and Pidge loved Keith's loyalty to her, even how hotheaded he was.

The girls left her alone, and the guys didn't bother Keith for the most part, though James did pop up now and then.

Both of them were starting to grow feelings for each other, based out of the closeness they only ever felt with each other. Neither of them knew how to express it though.

...

"I swear, you never listen to me-" Pidge said, shaking her head at Keith as he scribbled on his homework.

"I mean, this doesn't make sense to me." Keith frowned. "I don't understand."

She sighed, and scooched closer to him, leaning across the desk. Their faces were centimeters apart as she explained his english homework.

"This, means to love, and that means hate, so if you use that in context with the story, it isn't hard Keith, you just don't want to learn it..." she stopped talking and glanced at him.

They were so close, and Keith couldn't look away from her soft hazel eyes.

He leaned in.

Their noses touched gently before their lips did and Keith felt his eyes flutter close.

Pidge gasped into the kiss, surprised and confused as to why anyone would ever want her.

It ended quickly, and Keith pulled away. He was bright red, staring at his hands.

Pidge bit her lip. "..uh.I'm sorry."

He glanced up at her, "Huh?"

"That was my first kiss."

He stared at her for a few seconds before grinning. She had never seen him grin.

"Ah, I feel special." He smirked.

She laughed. "Hm, well you are."

He booped her nose. "I'm lucky."

She blushed. "Are you?"

"Yes. Cause I've got you."

She smiled. "We've got each other."

He nodded. "Me and you against the world... aka the bullies."

She laughed. "Forever."

He lifted a hand to her honey hair. "Forever.....girlfriend?"

She nodded. "Yes."

Then she paused. "Wait."

He frowned. "..oh."

"You have to stop smoking. For me." She looked dead serious.

Keith bit his lip. "You, are so stubborn."

"I've heard that, yes." She smiled.

He smiled back. "Fine." He took the entire cigarette pack out of pocket, and lighter. He got up and threw them both away.

"I'd rather have you anyways."
