1. Who was Dr.Moumita Debnath?

  Moumita Debnath was a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, West Bengal.

she was a dedicated medical professional with a bright future. Born and raised in Kolkata, India, Dr. Debnath displayed an early passion for medicine. Her academic journey was marked by excellence, and her determination led her to pursue a career in healthcare, driven by the desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

Her upbringing in a supportive family, combined with her relentless pursuit of knowledge, shaped her into a compassionate doctor. After completing her medical degree, she chose to specialize in chest medicine, an area she felt could offer substantial help to patients suffering from respiratory ailments.

2. The brutal murder and rape case:

On the morning of August 9, 2024, Dr Moumita Debnath was reported missing by her colleagues. She was last seen heading to a seminar hall within the college premises to rest after 36 hour shift. Her body was discovered later that day in a half-clad state, with visible injuries indicating a brutal assault.

3. The Autopsy report:

The autopsy confirmed that she had been raped and strangled to death. The report detailed severe injuries to her genital tract, face, and other parts of her body, suggesting a violent struggle before her death.
An autopsy revealed that Debnath had been raped and sexually assaulted before being killed via strangulation.

The report, spanning four pages, also noted a deep wound in her genital tract, lips, left leg, right hand, ring finger, neck, and face. The report revealed that the scratch marks on the woman's face were likely caused by the accused's fingernails.
According to the report, pressure was applied to her mouth and throat, and she was strangled, resulting in a fracture of the thyroid cartilage. The report also noted bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts, with the injuries in her genital area attributed to "perverted sexuality" and "genital torture." The exact cause of the injuries to her eyes remains undetermined.

The postmortem report also revealed that around 150 mg of semen was found in the vaginal swab. This finding, along with the extent of injuries, led the doctors who performed the autopsy and the victim's parents to suggest Debnath may have been subjected to gang rape.

4. The reaction of the general public:

Kolkata Police rejected such claims as rumors, saying that it is impossible to distinguish semen from multiple individuals with the naked eye during an autopsy.

he immediate reaction to this crime was one of horror and disbelief. The medical community in Kolkata and across India quickly mobilized to demand justice for Dr Debnath.

5. The last 24 hour evolving the protest.

Some Indian junior doctors have remained off the job as they demanded swift justice for a colleague who was raped and murdered in a hospital, despite the end of a strike called by a large doctors’ association, as street protests continued.

Doctors across the country have held protests and candlelight marches and refused to see nonemergency patients in the past week after the killing of the 31-year-old postgraduate medical student in the early hours of August 9 in the eastern city of Kolkata.
