1 | Life After Tragedy
I never thought that I was going to lose the one man that I loved more than life itself so quickly on that rainy night, three days ago. We had planned so much for the future and a love for one another that burned with ultimate passion and desire, that I thought would never die. And all it took to put an end to it all was him getting shot by a stray bullet while he tried to go about his everyday life, which I know now was nothing but a lie.
As I sat in the darkened kitchen, I listened to the sound of my house phone ringing constantly off the hook and trying to ignore them. I knew that it was without a doubt one of the many loan sharks that my deceased fiancé, Jason owed money to. I still can't believe that I never figured out that he was addicted to gambling and drinking and that he was borrowing money from multiple different loan sharks to pay for those disgusting habits.
At times I wish that I had never met him, I wish that I would have never accepted being engaged to him at all. If I would have known the things that I know now, then my life would a whole lot more different than my reality now. But sadly, that is just how life is, sometimes you get fucked over and sometimes you don't.
With my thoughts somewhat in order, I rubbed my hands down my face and sighed as I heard the sound of my phone ringing again. Feeling a bit annoyed by the mass amount of phone calls that I had received just today, I angerly stood up from my chair and pushed it back from me, causing it to hit the kitchen wall with a loud thump. And stomped over to my phone, picking it up, ready to give whoever it was on the other end a good piece of my mind.
But, as I went to press the answer button, I saw that it was my best friend from college, Dani who had moved to Moscow several years ago. Interested to see why she was calling me, I quickly answered the call and said. "Hello?"
"Hey, girl. It's me, Dani. I heard that Jason died a couple of nights ago and I was checking to see if you are okay?" Dani asked, worried for her friend's sanity.
"I'm doing fine, I guess. How did you get my number again? I thought you lost it after you moved to Russia." Dani asked curiously.
"Well, let's just say that I found your mother's phone number and I called her and asked, and she gave it to me."
"That figures." I said nonchalantly and then walked back over to the table with my phone still in hand and sat down in one of the chairs that was facing the kitchen window that was dotted with raindrops. "My mom was always a sucker for getting sweet-talked. But that is beside the point, what did you actually call me about? I know there is something else to this phone call that you had in mind."
I listened as Dani sighed deeply and then replied. "Fine, fine. You got me Alli. I did have a good reason for calling you."
"And that was?" I asked.
"After I found out that Jason was killed, I knew that you sitting in your apartment, sulking about his death. Alli, I know how much he meant to you and I hate knowing that you're sitting there alone in your apartment, feeling sorry for yourself. So, I bought you a plane ticket to come visit me in Moscow and you can stay at my place while when you come. Please, Alli. Consider my offer. It would be better for you to be around people that you know and having some fun, instead of sitting there grieving."
I knew that what Dani was saying was right, it would be better for me to get out of this apartment and to spend time with friends and loved ones. But my head was still in such a fuzz after Jason's death. Knowing that this might be my one chance to finally get away from the people that Jason owed money to. With my mind finally made up, I answered Dani's plea and replied. "Alright, I'll come and stay with you in Moscow. I think it would do me some good to get out of this damn apartment for a while."
As soon as she heard those words, I literally thought that I had heard Dani scream with happily and then heard her say. "Thank you, Alli. I promise that I will make the trip worth your while."
With Dani now happy, I was curious as to when my flight was going to be, I decided to ask. "What time is my flight going to be? I need to know so that I can prepare."
"Well, your flight is scheduled for tonight at five, actually. I couldn't get your ticket set for any later."
I mentally cursed Dani when I heard her say that, and then replied as I looked at the kitchen clock seeing that I didn't have that much time to pack. "Alright, I'll see you when I get there. Text me your address so that I know where to go when I get to Moscow. Because I know that my mother gave you my cell phone number too."
"Nothing ever escapes you does it? I'll text you after you land. This is going to be so much fun; I can't wait until you get here. I have so much planned for us to do! I'll talk to you later, bye." Dani said gleefully.
"Bye." I replied and then ended the call and stood from my chair and walked into my bedroom.
Once in my bedroom, I threw my phone on my bed and walked over to my closet and grabbed my two suitcases and pulled them out, ignoring the sight of Jason's clothes still hanging in the closet and placed them onto the bed and then walked over to my dresser and started for clothes that I wanted to take with me.
Not really sure what the weather was going to be like, I grabbed a combination of sweaters and t-shirts and placed them into my suitcases along with several pairs of jeans and shorts. I was feeling good about this trip and was hoping and praying as I finished packing that it was going to be a memorable one.
With my clothes packed in one bag and my shoes in the other, I grabbed my suitcases and my phone, and purse and walked out of my apartment and locked my door behind me and got into my car and drove off towards the airport.
When I finally arrived at the airport, I got my ticket and quickly and boarded the plane and then slept the entire way to Moscow.
