Visualizing Death : 25

"Skittles bowling?" I ask when Josh tells Elizabeth and me where we're going. "How is it different from regular bowling?"

Josh nods, glancing at me as he drives down the road. "It is different, yes."

I wait for him to continue, but when he doesn't, I prod, "And how is that?"

"Basically, I've assigned each color of skittle to a different way to bowl. For example, when you pull an orange skittle from the bag, you have to bowl granny style," he tries to explain, only confusing me further.

"What?"

Elizabeth suddenly shouts from the backseat where she and Alec had been sitting in silence. "I love that game! We used to play it all the time, only we used M&Ms instead of skittles."

"So am I the only person who has no clue what's going on?"

Everyone nods.

Josh sighs, and when we stop at a red light, he pulls a small paper from his pocket and hands it to me. "Will this help?"

"Not at all," I comment after I've skimmed over the few words.

Orange - Granny style
Green - Less dominant hand
Yellow - Spin around five times then bowl
Purple - Backwards
Red - Stand on one foot

"It'll make more sense when we start playing, although, I'm not sure how you don't understand yet," Alec teases and I reach back and punch his leg.

"So what does granny style mean?"

"Between your legs," Alec answers. "I'll show you when we get there."

It didn't take long for the boys to set up our lane when we arrived at the bowling alley. And while Josh was entering our names into the system, Alec demonstrated what granny style means.

"Well, okay," I say, blinking at him in surprise. That was not what I expected granny style to mean. I had more of an image of sitting on the floor and pushing the ball. That or using the kiddy ramp.

"Lets get started shall we?"

After we finish our day date, the boys drop us back off at our separate homes with the promise to return at 6:00 for dinner and pictures at Josh's house.

When I enter my room, after answer a few questions from Dad, I immediately glance at the clock on the wall. 2:30. That gives me over three hours until Josh will pick me up. Plenty of time.

My eyes rest on the blue dress that I bought with Elizabeth last week. I still remember when Elizabeth called me to tell me that Alec had asked her to prom - though she assured me that it was completely platonic. I smile and gently run my fingers over the fabric, the cool material flowing like water between my fingers.

I bite my lip before I head to the bathroom to take a nice warm shower.

***

The doorbell rings at 5:59.

I glance at my reflection in the hall mirror one last time, making sure that my high ponytail is still secured.

"Mia, the door's for you!" Dad calls.

Taking a deep breath I walk down the hall and enter Josh's sight. I grin when I notice that he picked the right color of tie. His black suit matches the black on my dress and he grins back at me.

"You look beautiful, Mia," Josh compliments, grabbing my hand before pulling me into a hug.

(Mia's dress)

"Thank you," I smile. "You clean up well, too."

He chuckles before gesturing towards the door. "Shall we go?"

"Not so fast!" Dad protests before picking the camera up off the bookshelf.

"Oh come on, Dad. We're going to do pictures at Josh's house. And Jackson, Emily, Elizabeth, and Alec will be in those ones, too."

"Speaking of Jackson, how come you didn't invite him and Emily to the day date with you? I'm sure he would have loved it," Dad questions, still motioning for us to pose for pictures.

"We did invite him, sir, but he said he and Emily would find another activity to do." Josh glances at me. "Although I'm not sure what that was."

Dad sighs, "Well at least you invited him." He takes a picture. "Okay, I'll let you guys go, but I will need those pictures from your mother, Joshua." Dad places the camera strap around his neck and lets it dangle. He steps in front of us and opens the door. "Have a good night. And remember, curfew is midnight."

"I'll be sure to have her home by then," Josh promises, sliding an arm around my waist and leading me to his car.

"Bye, Dad!" I call back over my shoulder. "Love you!"

"Love you, too, pumpkin!"

***

"Elizabeth!" I yell when I see her standing outside of Josh's house with Alec and Mrs. Meyers.

She wraps me a tight hug when I get to her.

"You look so beautiful!" I gush, glancing at her purple dress.

(Elizabeth's dress)

She scoffs. "Me? Look at you! Your dress looks even better than it did when we bought it!"

"Ladies, ladies, you're both pretty," Alec cuts in, causing a slightly awkward air to build between our small group.

I try to laugh, but it sounds as fake as ever. "Hilarious, Alec. But we all know you're the prettiest person here."

The tension immediately breaks and we all start to tease Alec. Our conversation drops when Jackson and Emily pull up in the driveway.

Jackson, like a proper gentleman, steps around and opens Emily's door.

My jaw nearly drops when I see her. Her blond hair is pulled into a styled messy bun that accentuates her silver dangly earrings. My eyes nearly pop out of my head when I see her walking on four inch heels, visible under her green dress which is sheer below the knees. I could never wear anything taller than two inches.

As they approach the four of us - Mrs. Meyers went inside to fetch her husband some time ago - we grow silent.

Surprisingly, Josh is the first one to talk to Jackson and the boys start to separate from the girls.

"It's great to meet you, Emily. Jackson has told me so much about you," I tell her, only lying a little. Compared to how much Jackson and I have actually talked since the movie night, most of it was about her.

She grins. "You must be Mia."

"The one and only."

Elizabeth glances over to the boys. "What do you think they're talking about?"

The three of them look like they are having a ball with all their laughter and smiles.

"I have no idea."

"Okay, teens! It's time to take pictures!" Mrs. Meyers says, coming back outside with Mr. Meyers carrying the camera. "Assemble yourselves in front of the tree."

For the next twenty minutes, Mr. Meyers takes pictures of us while Mrs. Meyers arranges us in different ways.

"Now time for couple pictures," she announces. "Jackson and Emily first."

Mr. Meyers takes over the whole photo shoot as Mrs. Meyers pulls Josh and me aside.

"I've been thinking about what you told me, Mia. About the vision that Joshua didn't die in? And I really don't think there's any reason for us to worry about it. My husband agrees with me," she discusses, glancing between me and her son. "I guess there's a possibility that he won't die at that point, but we will never know until then."

In a moment of vulnerability, my eyes catch Mrs. Meyers and I am unable to fight the vision off as I have been for a month.

Mrs. Meyers is going to die of old age, just like Alec and Lauren.

I wake up looking at the ceiling in the Meyers' living room.

I feel someone press a kiss to my forehead.

"Feeling okay?" Josh whispers, playing with the sleeve of my dress.

"Mhmm." I cough. "Water?"

Out of nowhere, a cup of water appears. I glance over to see Mr. Meyers with his hand outstretched. "You'll have to sit up to drink, Mia," he reminds when I try to take the cup.

I sit up, leaning my back against of Josh's shoulder. I take the water and take a big gulp, draining half the cup.

"I nearly forgot how tiring that is," I say dryly.

Josh and Mr. Meyers laugh.

"Are you feeling up to taking our couple pictures?"

Taking a breath, I nod, letting Josh pull me to my feet. "Wait, I have to check my make up."

"You look fine, Mia," he says, but hands me his phone anyway.

I quickly open the camera and make sure that I still look good. My lipstick is a little worn from the drink I had, but it isn't too noticeable.

"Okay, let's go rock the camera."

Josh rolls his eyes. "Please don't say that again."

I smirk before slipping my hand into his and pulling him back into the front yard.

As Mrs. Meyers positions the two of us in front of the tree, it's impossible not to catch the confused glances that Emily is not so discreetly sending me.

"We told her you passed out from dehydration," Josh whispers when he sees where I'm looking. "But it's obvious that she doesn't believe that."

"I probably wouldn't believe it either. How could I have gotten that dehydrated? What could I have been doing?" I retort, but he just shrugs and throws his arm around my shoulders when his mother tells him to.

"Just relax, will you?"

"Easy for you to say," I respond, but I still try to smile genuinely for the pictures.

Our couple pictures don't take too long, probably because Mrs. Meyers can sense I'm not in the mood.

Josh's dad comes outside and announces that our dinner is ready before leaving with Mrs. Meyers to give us the house to ourselves.

The others in our group head inside, ready for food, but I hold Josh back.

"I'm sorry I'm ruining this."

He almost scoffs, "Mia. You aren't ruining this. I promise." He continues towards his house. "Just you wait. Tonight is going to be the best night of your life."

When we arrive at the dance, it's already 9:00.

Glancing back to Josh, I whisper, "We aren't staying for the next three hours, are we?"

He grins, "You'd be surprised at how quickly time passes when you're having fun."

"Well, yes," I agree, following him onto the dance floor. I find that I have to raise my voice even more so he can hear me over the pounding music. "But that wasn't the question I asked."

"Wasn't it?"

We become immediately surrounded by the rest of the students in the mosh pit that I don't have time to pester him.

For a couple of seconds, I'm annoyed by the sudden influx of people, but I catch Josh's grin and then I let my anger fade away. I join Josh - as well as the other hundred people - in jumping up and down to the loud music.

We stay in the middle of the mass of peers for a long time, probably ten or so songs. Then they start to play a slow song. Suddenly, the crowd evens out as several students leave the floor to find fresh air or a drink. Josh wraps his arms around my waist and mine go around his neck, almost as if it were second nature.

"Are you enjoying yourself yet?" Josh whispers in my ear.

"No," I lie. However, a smile slips and betrays me.

"Right. Of course."

We both chuckle and I lean my head on his shoulder.

I ignore the rest of the students at the dance, even when Elizabeth and Alec wolf whistle at the two of us. Everything fades except Josh and his arms around me. Even the music has become background noise.

"Thank you."

I lift my head and stare at Josh. "What?"

"Thank you for making this easy for me. The whole Meise and Weise thing."

I continue to stare at him. "You think I made it easy for you? Don't you remember when I ran off the first time we met? Or when I locked myself in my room and refused to look at anyone?"

"Don't you think I expected that?"

No, I honestly don't.

"Mia," he sighs. "Come here." He grabs my hand and weaves us out of the building, onto a balcony. He leans against a railing before grabbing my other hand as well. "How could I ever blame you for being so freaked out? I mean, if I ever saw a vision, I would totally freak out, even though I know what I do. You have been incredibly brave. So I thank you."

Josh leans forward and kisses my forehead.

"Josh, I..."

"And even if I end up dying or not in that car accident, that doesn't matter. Because I've been given a chance to live. With you."

There it is! The last chapter! All that's left is the epilogue! (Which I hope to post by Monday. If not, then it WILL be up by Tuesday(my last day on Wattpad for 18 months))

Thanks for reading!
