Visualizing Death : 23

"Finally!" Alec yells, spinning in circles with his arms thrown out. "It's spring break!"

"You're going to hurt yourself if you keep spinning like that," Elizabeth points out, rolling her eyes.

Alec pouts, dropping his arms as he stops spinning. "You ruin my fun, Liz."

"You know that's not my name," Elizabeth snaps, smacking his chest.

Josh chuckles, catching up to the three of us. He grabs my backpack from me before taking my hand in his.

"Did you turn your homework in, procrastinator ?" I ask, rolling my eyes at his gesture.

"Oh, shush. I am not a procrastinator. It was due today and I turned it in, didn't I?" Josh asks, leading me away from Elizabeth and Alec towards his car. I turn around and wave goodbye to them before continuing to follow Josh.

"But wasn't it due at the beginning of class? You didn't have it done on time and in my books, that makes you a procrastinator."

"What time is the dinner tonight?"

I smirk at him. "6:30. And don't think I didn't catch that subject change."

"Oh, I would never do that," he teases, opening the passenger door for me when we reach his car. I climb into the car and Josh closes the door before opening the back door and setting both our backpacks on the seat.

As soon as Josh sits in the driver's seat and turns the keys he pulls out of the parking spot and starts on the road towards my house.

"Are you ready for Tuesday?" I ask Josh, turning the radio off.

Josh grins, "I'm so ready."

"Ready enough to tell me what we're doing?"

"What do you think?"

"I'll take that as a no?"

"Mhmm." Josh reaches forward and turns the radio back on.

After a few minutes of us rocking out to the songs on the radio, Josh pulls up in front of my house. He quickly gets out and opens my door for me.

Once we get inside my house, I'm surprised to find Dad, Lauren, and Jackson all sitting in the living room.

"Umm, hi? What are you all doing here?" I ask, glancing curiously at Josh, who just shrugs in return.

"You say that like we aren't allowed to be here," Dad teases, smiling at me.

"Well, of course that's not what I meant. It's just that, aren't you usually at work?"

"We wanted to spend the afternoon together," Lauren says as she stands up and gives me a hug, surprising me. "Is that okay?"

"Yeah, why wouldn't it be? I'm just confused because I thought that we were having dinner tonight."

"What? We can't do more together than eating? I was thinking we should go see a movie or something." Her face dropped suddenly. "Is that okay?"

"Lauren," I almost laugh. "I've long since accepted you. There's no need to worry about wanting to do something together."

Her face nearly glows with happiness as he hugs me again. "I'm glad to hear that."

Dad comes up behind his girlfriend, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. "We should get on our way." His eyes snap to Josh. "Of course you are invited, Joshua, but if you need to be somewhere, don't let us stop you."

"I would love to come along with you all, but I promised my mother that I would get homework done before our dinner tonight," Josh answers, smiling slightly.

"That's absolutely fine."

"I'll walk you to your car," I say quickly, almost pushing Josh back out the front door.

"So I guess I'll see you later then," Josh says once he's opened his car door.

"I guess so. Don't have too much fun with your homework." I pause. "Even though it's spring break."

He rolls his eyes, leaning on the door frame. "And you called me a procrastinator." Not waiting for a response, he leans towards me, kissing me quickly. "I'll see you at 6:30, Mia."

When we arrive at the movie theater, we discover that the only seats available are in sets of twos scattered around.

"I can sit with Mia," Dad says, glancing over at me. "Lauren and Jackson can sit together."

"Don't be ridiculous, Dad. That would kind of ruin the purpose of going out." I take the tickets from his hands before distributing them so Dad and Lauren are next to each other. Which means I'm next to Jackson.

"Enjoy the movie, then." Dad says, glancing between us before he and Lauren go to find their seats.

"So I've been meaning to ask you something," Jackson says, following me up to our seats on the back row.

"And that is?"

"What's up with your relationship with that Joshua kid?" He asks, and it's obvious that he's hesitant to ask it.

I pause mid-step before replying, "Oh. It's uh, pretty complicated."

"Well I don't know about you but I'm not exactly interested in watching this movie," he hints as we find our seats and sit down.

"What if I am?" I challenge, biting my lip nervously. "What if this is the movie I've been waiting to watch for months?"

"I never knew you were into that whole discovery channel thing. You are aware that this is a movie about frogs?"

I'm going to kill my dad for picking this movie.

"Of course I am," I lie, glancing at the big screen as the previews start playing. "Who doesn't like frogs?"

Jackson slowly raises his hand.

I sigh, "Fine, I'll tell you about Josh."

"Okay, first question, why does he allow you to call him Josh? When I called him Josh he nearly bit my head off." He pauses. "Well, not really, but his glare was intense."

I shrug, glad that we're easing into the topic. "I don't know. That's just what I've always called him."

"Alright. So what happened that night at dinner a while ago? When you fainted?"

So much for easing into it.

I start from the beginning, like Josh did when he first told me. I tell him that I'm Josh's Meise and he's my Weise. I tell him about my visions that I have and how I've been working to subdue them. When I finish, I glance over at Jackson to see him staring blackly at me.

"Are you serious?"

"Well, yeah."

"Okay."

Neither of us say anything beyond that and we finish the frog movie in silence.

When we join Dad and Lauren afterwards, a tension has built between us. I can tell that both Dad and Lauren notice is but neither of them mention it as we drive home.

When we pull into the driveway, I see Josh's car on the street. I hop out quickly and knock on his window.

Josh steps out and smiles at me. "Howdy, stranger."

I roll my eyes before grabbing his hand and pulling him into the house.

"How was the movie?"

"Boring. My dad picked some movie about frogs. Then," I chuckle, "then Jackson asked me about you."

"Really? And how did that go?" Josh asks, pulling me by the hand into the empty living room and sitting down with me on the couch.

"Okay, I guess. I don't know. He was so adamant that I tell him about our relationship. But, I actually have something more important to tell you." I take a deep breath, trying to plan out my words.

"Should I be scared?" Josh teases with a smile which quickly drops when he sees my expression. "What is it?"

I take another breath. "Remember the last vision I had of you? At your house? Well, it wasn't quite like the other visions."

Josh's eyebrows pull together. "What do you mean?"

"You didn't exactly die."

A tense silence falls between us and I notice Josh straighten.

"That's not possible," he whispers. "It can't change."

I shrug and start absentmindedly picking at the split ends in my hair. "I just though I should tell you," I say matter-of-factly, as if I didn't intensely debate telling him.

"Does my mother know?"

"Yeah," I confirm, looking up from my hair. "I told her. But she didn't really know what to do about it either."

Josh puffs out his cheeks before responding, "Well there isn't much we can do about it then. I guess we'll just have to wait and see."

"Come on, kids!" Dad calls from the kitchen. "Food's ready!"

Once we're all seated, Dad stands again and clears his throat. "I have an announcement to make." He looks around the table at all of us with a smile on his face."I've asked Lauren to marry me and she's said yes. We're aiming for a wedding in July."

For a moment no one moves or says anything. Then Jackson stands up and shakes hands with my father. Josh is quick to follow and he even gives him the classic man-hug.

I slowly stand and make my way to my father, my mind running 10 miles an hour. How could he marry someone else? I thought my mother meant everything to him? I know I accepted Lauren when I first met her, but that was when she was only a girlfriend. Getting married is a whole different world.

I reach my father and wrap my arms around him. "I love you, pumpkin. And I love your mother. But I love Lauren now, too."

I look onto his eyes, seeing a happiness there that has been gone for a while. Lauren truly makes him happy, I realize. A grin grows on my face and I respond, "I know, Dad."

"I needed this," Elizabeth sighs, stretching out on her beach towel."This is why I love spring break. It's a week free from school before summer."

I exchange looks with Josh before chuckling.

''How does it feel, Mia?" Alec asks, coming towards us from the water.

"How does what feel?" I ask, pulling my wet hair into a messy bun. I can already tell that my hair will require lots of brushing to get it untangled.

"To have a stepbrother and mother. Is it weird?"

"Technically they aren't related to me yet. Give it a few months then I'll answer that."

"How about we just relax instead of questioning Mia?" Josh suggests, sending me a subtle wink.

"Fine, fine," Alec relents, taking a seat on his towel next to Elizabeth. "What a wonderful way to spend our last spring break in high school. It's been a while since I've done something so relaxing."

"Any other votes for lunch?" I ask, pulling a t-shirt over my head."Because I'm starving."

Everyone quickly agrees and we head to the boardwalk to find something to eat.

"I vote we skip lunch and go straight to dessert," Elizabeth says, eyeing a frozen yogurt place."Besides, who actually eats healthy during spring break?" Without waiting for any positive or negative votes, she heads towards the small shop. Alec simply shrugs and we follow after her.

"I remember when I had my wisdom teeth removed during spring break last year," Alec comments, holding the door open for the rest of us. "All I ate was apple sauce and jello. That was a fun time."

"Yeah and you were only a little loopey." I tease, punching him on the shoulder.

"He asked for water, like, what? Five times? Even though we had already given him some," Elizabeth says with a smile.

"And no matter how many times we reminded him, he would still ask."

"I thought we were never going to mention that!" Alec whines.

"Leave the poor guy alone," Josh defends before taking my hand and dragging me to the counter.

"You ruin my fun," I pout as we step up to the counter to order our froyo.

As Alec rattles off his order to the worker, I lean my head on Josh's shoulder and one thought cycles around in my head.

Life can't get better than this.
