How to Catch a Ghost

Tw: mentions of suicide

I sat alone in my room, at least, I assumed I was. My laptop was held open. There's no way I'm crazy... I actually saw her...

Slowly, as if someone was watching me, my fingers hovered over the keys, how to catch a ghost. Hesitantly, I pressed enter. Surprisingly, many different articles came up, even a Wikihow, with pictures. I clicked on a site that looked promising.

How to catch a ghost

1. Candle in a jar

I scrolled down to the instructions.

You need a candle, a jar, and a matching lid

1. Place the candle in the jar

2. Set the jar in an area most commonly haunted

3. Light the candle, the ghost will be drawn to the energy given off by the candle

4. Once the ghost has entered the candle, put the lid over the jar, keeping it trapped so long you keep the jar closed

That doesn't seem too hard...

I shuffled through my things to find the items I needed, mysteriously, they were gone. I knew I had a candle in here somewhere!

I rushed downstairs, to find a jar in the kitchen. I went through each cupboard, there wasn't a single one. Even though I knew exactly where one was, but it had vanished.

"Ghost? Ghost, where are you?" I asked, "I know you're here somewhere..." The closet...

My eyes went to the closet under the stairs. Smirking, I walked over, and opened the door. Jar and candle, sitting right there.

"Ghost, if you don't want me to do this, just show yourself!" I cried. Instead of an answer, Birthday pawed at me.

"Not now," She kept at it, "Birthday, no!" She meowed, "What do you want!?" She walked towards the kitchen, I followed.

Then, Birthday stood by one of the dinning chairs. Her fur moved as if she was being petted, but no one was there. No one I could see, at least.

"Hello?" I asked, staying calm as I could.

Birthday's fur quickly stopped moving. The sound of soft footsteps got louder as they got closer, suddenly, they stopped. Instantly, I began to shiver. Birthday began rubbing up against something, but I couldn't see what.

"Hello?" I tried.

"Hello?" A quiet voice belonging to a girl mirrored what I had said.

"Who are you?"

"Who are you?" She copied, but dragged the 'ou'.

"I'm Ryan, can I see you?"

"I don't know, can you?" She asked, playfully.

"No actually, I can't. And frankly, I would like to be your friend, but you're making it very difficult for me, ghost." She stayed silent for a moment. Shit, did I scare her away?

"My name isn't ghost, y'know."

"I know, I just wanted something to call you."

"Well if you ask me, it's not a very creative nickname." She giggled.

"I wasn't asking you. What is your name then?"

"Why do you care?"

"Why do you care? Wow, imagine waiting nine months in the womb just to be called 'Why do you care?'" She stood silent.

"It's..."

"What did you say?"

"My name, it's Y/n." She finally said, defeated. Progress...

"Y/n, well it's nice to finally meet you, properly, that is," I smiled kindly, but I had absolutely no idea where she stood, "Will I ever get to see you?"

"Maybe one day."

"Could it be today?"

"No..." I then felt a weird tingling sensation go through my body, but it left as soon as it came. I had stopped shivering, and Birthday sat in front of me, her big eyes looking up at me.

"C'mere girl." I picked up the kitten and walked back to my room. My laptop was still open on the tab. Strangely, the jar and candle lay on the ground by my bed. Maybe another day I will...

I pulled the laptop onto my lap as Birthday lie next to me, head on my leg. The sunny day turning night. Maybe I can find some information on her...

I typed in my address, then added Y/n at the end. Only a single newspaper article came up, along with a picture.

5/24/2002
Y/n L/n found dead in her bathtub, the police believe it was a suicide. Pictured below: Y/n L/n and her fiancé, Dallon Weekes

The picture was of her, kissing the cheek of a tall man I had never seen before. She looks so happy...

Then I typed Dallon Weekes into the search bar. Only an abandoned MySpace page came up, cluttered with pictures of the two, nothing had been updated since a few days before her death. Weird...

Before I could type anything else, my laptop snapped shut. I jumped back while my eyes looked up to see her.

"What do you think you're doing!?" She cried, her eyes on the brink of tears.

"I just... I just wanted to-"

"Look, I killed myself, okay!?" Tears began to spill down her face, "Is that good enough for you!? Or do you want more!?" I shook my head, terrified. Her knees caved in and she fell to the floor, sobbing.

"Y/n, I'm sorry." I joined her on the floor, cautiously putting a comforting arm around her shoulders. She flinched at my touch, but clearly didn't want me to move. Chills were sent down my spine. She slowly began to calm down. She's so cold...

"Ryan, why did you move in here? Your friend told you I was here. But you still took it, why?" She began to wipe her tears away.

"I don't know, I mean, it's kinda silly."

"Tell me anyways." She rested her head on my shoulder.

"Well, for one, I don't have that much money and this place was not that bad. And two, I just had this weird feeling in my stomach that I just had to take it."

"I'm happy you did."

"I thought you hated me."

"I did, but Birthday changed my mind."

"The cat?" I looked to her, still asleep on the bed. Y/n nodded, "Y'know, you're really not that bad yourself. I mean, now that I've really met you." She smiled.

"Could we move to the bed?" She asked, tracing her finger through the carpet.

"Yeah, sure." I said. As she got up, I noticed that she had a long cut starting from her wrist going to her forearm, a matching one on the other side. How could she do that to herself? She didn't deserve that... whatever it was that caused her to do this to herself...

We laid on our backs, staring at the ceiling with Birthday sound asleep above my pillow.

"Hey Ryan?" She asked quietly, eyes focused on the ceiling, her fingers playing with her fingers.

"Yeah?"

"I'm sorry I've been such an ass to you."

"It's okay, I mean, I was the one that moved into your house."

"But it's not okay, you've been nothing but nice to me. I've just, scared your friends and moved your furniture."

"You moved my furniture?"

"Yeah, only enough for you to stub your toe and trip over it." She looked down at her fingers in shame.

"Oh, that's actually kinda funny." I chuckled.

"Really? But you hurt yourself." She turned onto her side so she was looking at me.

"I'm okay now. It wasn't that bad." I turned to my side, facing her. My fingers moved a few loose hairs out of her face. She held a bashful smile on her face. Silence filled the room. My eyes wandered to her lips. Before I could make a move, she spoke up.

"Well, goodnight Ryan." She kissed my forehead and turned to her other side.

"Goodnight, Y/n." I stared at her back for a moment, hoping she would turn back around, but she didn't. So I turned to my other side, and fell asleep.
