Twenty-Three: Turning Point

Truth: I started crying writing this one.

Ezra fell, gasping, as he was released from Plagueis' grip. He looked to see Kanan doing the same, as the Twi'lek stumbled back, looking at his hands.
Ezra quickly turned his head, frantically trying to locate Sabine. She had to be okay!
He saw her a few yards away, knocked out and lying in a crumpled heap on the ground. She couldn't be dead!
Ezra started crawling towards her, still coughing from the lack of air he had suffered at the hand of Plagueis. It seemed as though he would never get to her, but then suddenly he was at her side.
He reached for her shoulders, pulling her closer, till her head was on his lap, and he shook her gently.
"Sabine? Sabine, please answer me!"
He felt his eyes mist, but blinked the tears back, shaking her again. "Sabine please!" He could feel her slipping away.
A tear dropped onto her lifeless face, and Ezra hastily wiped it away. He needed to stay strong for her, no matter what happened.
"Sabine, I--I can't go on without you...don't leave me..."
He dropped his head, resting his forehead on hers. "'Bine..."

Kanan could hear Ezra crawling towards Sabine, and turned his focus back to the Twi'lek.
Plagueis was standing a few feet away, and stumbled back a step. "What have I done?" He moaned.
Kanan coughed, but pushed himself to his feet, using the Force to grab his lightsaber, which was deactivated, lying a few feet away. He moved towards Plagueis, activating his saber.
The Twi'lek seemed to notice him, and Kanan felt fear radiating from him. "No! No it is me! Arene!"
Kanan stopped, studying the signature of the Twi'lek warily. "Arene is dead."
"No, no I am not! Plagueis tried, but he didn't kill me. I'm so sorry..."
The Twi'lek stopped as if she couldn't go on, and Kanan could hear her start to cry. She fell to her knees, weeping.
Kanan released a relieved breath, and deactivated his saber, coming close and kneeling down beside her. "It's okay, Arene. You're fine, now."
The girl shook her head, and whimpered. "You were right. Revenge...it leads only to pain and to suffering. I was a fool. I--"
Kanan cut her off, shaking his head. "This wasn't your fault, Arene. I should have told you before. I'm sorry."
She started to calm down, and pushed herself to her feet. Kanan did the same.
She placed her hand on his arm, and he automatically turned his head towards her. She emitted sorrow, and dread. "I have to leave," she whispered, and Kanan shook his head. "You can stay with us, we'll keep you safe."
"No." She sounded as if she was in intense pain. "You do not understand. He is still here."

Zeb woke up groggily, and immediately wondered why he would fall asleep against a rock. Rocks are hard, uncomfortable, and you never get a good night's rest when you use one as a pillow. You always wake up with a crick in your spine.
Zeb frowned without opening his eyes. He remembered going to sleep in his bunk the night before, so how'd he end up outside, lying against a rock? Did Sabine and Ezra decide to pull a prank on him somehow?
He had been awfully tired the night before, and he did have a really bad headache now, but it just didn't seem as though Ezra would drug him...would he?
Well, he determined, opening his eyes was probably the best way to figure out what happened.
He opened one eye, before shutting it again quickly. The light was so bright, and his head hurt already. He tried again, and it wasn't as bad.
Zeb sat up, rubbing his eyes, and looking around as best he could. A few yards away, Kanan was talking to...Arene?
Then it all came back to him, the Sith Lord, the battle, and getting knocked thrown backwards. Must've knocked him out.
He stood immediately, and grabbed his bow-rifle, pointing it at Plagueis. "Kanan! Step back!"
Kanan jumped in surprise, before quickly placing himself between the rifle and Plagueis. "Zeb, it's alright. It's Arene."
Zeb quickly dropped the barrel, and ran over to the girl. "Kid! You're alright!"
Arene lifted her head, and Zeb saw her tear stained cheeks. Her hand came up slowly as shook her head, and she tapped her temple. "He's still there," she whispered, and her brown eyes pooled with fresh tears. "I can't stay. He'll take control again."
Zeb's mouth opened on shock, as the girl suddenly turned around, and started running off.
"Arene!" Kanan yelled out, and started chasing her, making Zeb catch sight of the scene behind her. "Karabast!"

Sabine felt something on her forehead, and frowned slightly. "'Bine..."
The word made her gasp, and her eyes shot open to meet the beautiful electric blue ones directly above her.
Ezra gasped, and pulled her close. "I--I thought I lost you!"
Sabine frowned in confusion, but hugged him back anyway, despite the awkward angle. It seemed she was laying with her head cushioned on his lap. "What do you mean, 'lost me'?"
Ezra pulled back, and looked at her, amazement written all over his face. "You were--you were almost gone! You almost died!"
She shook her head as well as she could, and winced. She suddenly realized she had an awful headache. "What are you talking about, Ezra?"
It was his turn to frown and shake his head. "Plagueis..."
With that word, everything came back.
She shot up into a sitting position, and bumped Ezra's head. She ignored his 'ow' of protest, and scanned the surrounding area for the Sith Lord.
Not only was Plagueis gone, but Kanan as well!

Belief is not a matter of choice, but of conviction.
