Five: Arene Talkana

"Arene?" Ezra hesitantly touched her arm, but she didn't respond. He nudged her again, this time harder, but she still didn't move. He sighed.

Maybe it was better that he'd knocked her out. It had been an accident, but she might have tried to crawl through the blaster fire to get to her parents if he hadn't.

He sensed Kanan come up behind her. "Who is she?"

Ezra sighed again before answering. "Her name's Arene. I think she's their daughter."

Kanan didn't have to ask who he was talking about. "Your vision?"

Ezra looked over at him. "I saw her die along with her parents. I couldn't let that happen, and I couldn't let you guys get captured."

Kanan smirked slightly. "We can take care if ourselves. It's you I'm worried about." He squatted down, and studied Ezra through the force rather than his eyes. "Are you okay?"

Ezra looked down, confused by his inner turmoil. "I...don't know yet."

He looked back at the Twi'lek before bringing his wrist com to his mouth. "Hera, we're ready for a pickup."

"Copy that, Spectre Six. Good job."

He could hear the smile in her voice, and he couldn't help smiling a little bit himself. "You too, Spectre Two. See you in five."

He went to pick the girl up. "You sure you can carry her?"

Ezra grinned broadly up at Kanan in amusement. "You offering your services? 'Cause I feel like she'd be safer with me."

Kanan chuckled. "I meant Zeb."

Ezra lifted Arene into his arms. "I think I can handle her. Hera should be outside soon. We should get moving."

They made it to the door before they were intercepted by Zeb and Sabine.
"Who's that?" Sabine's voice sounded suspicious and almost...angry. That couldn't be right, so Ezra chose to just ignore the tone.

"This is Arene. I think she's Iress and Morass' daughter."

"Arene?" Sabine frowned slightly. "Didn't you yell out her name while you were having that...spell?"

Ezra frowned. "You were there?"
She opened her mouth, but Ezra cut her off. "There's no time for this. We'll talk about it later, but right now, Hera's coming to pick us up."

He moved towards the door.

"Are we bringing her with us?"

Ezra shot an incredulous look to Zeb as he kicked the door open and stepped outside. "What, do you think we'd just leave her here?"

"No, I didn't mean...ugh, never mind."

The Ghost landed a few seconds later, and they all boarded quickly.

As Hera rushed forward to give Kanan a hug, Ezra moved past them to the common room. It was the only place he knew of where he could put Arene till she woke up.

Unfortunately, there was a slight problem.

When Ezra tried to put the Twi'lek girl down, she woke up, and started to cry heavily and cling to him. She wouldn't let him put her down.

He ended up sitting down on the bench and holding her, rubbing her back and trying to comfort her not only with words, but by sending calming energy through the Force.

Eventually it seemed to work, and she sat up, looking at him for the first time. "Who are you?" She had a slight accent, and her voice sounded raw from all the crying.

"I'm Ezra Bridger. Are you Iress' and Morass' daughter?"

She sniffled before nodding. "Was the information for you?"

"Yeah. It was for the Rebellion."

She pulled back her fist, and it looked like she was going to punch him, but then she dropped her arm and fell against him again, crying anew. "This is how they'd want to have gone. Dying for what they believed in." She pulled back again, and Ezra was finally able to look at her.

She was around his age, maybe a bit younger. Her skin was actually more a violet than purple, her face, heartshaped and petite. Her lekku were tied back and hidden under a cloth, and her eyes were a rich chocolate brown.

"Are you okay, Arene?" He asked, interrupting her from surveying him. She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. "How do you know my name?"

Ezra hesitated. If she wasn't truly who she said she was...

But no, he could see that she was honest about what she had said, however little that may be. "I'm a Jedi, and I had a...vision about you."

She she moved a bit away from him on the couch. "You are a Jedi?" Her tone was laced with disbelief and sarcasm. It was clear to him she thought he was lying. "Yeah, I...I'm a Jedi."

"Then you should be able to lift this without touching it." Arene pulled off a necklace she'd been wearing, and Ezra caught his breath. The pendant was a kyber crystal!

(Yes, for all you who have seen Rogue One, I got that idea from Jyn's necklace. Btw, what'd you all think of the Star Wars Story? And did anyone see the Ghost or hear the 'General Syndulla' part? I'm afraid I only heard the General Syndulla, but I saw the Ghost later in an explanatory video 😜)

Oblivious to his surprise, she placed the necklace on the dejarik table and looked at him smugly. He reached for it instinctively and used the Force to being it to his hand. "Where did you get this?" he asked while inspecting the crystal.

When she didn't answer, Ezra looked towards the girl. Arene sat with mouth slowly agape, staring at him with wonder and...fear? He didn't want her to fear him, but he would have to take care of that later.

"Where did you get this?" he asked again, but was interrupted by the entry of Hera. She walked quickly over to Arene and took her hand, asking her if she was okay and offering condolences.

Ezra was impatient, however, and he moved his hand slightly, causing no damage to the Ghost but making a warning siren to go off. Hera was quickly gone back to the cockpit with a comment about a "stupid droid that can't do anything on his own".

Ezra chuckled slightly before turning back to Arene. She answered his question quickly, seemingly recovered from her shock and accepting of his claims. "Twenty-one years ago, my father saved a Jedi, named Plo Koon, from dying. In return the Jedi gave my father the crystal, and when I turned ten, my father gave it to me."

Ezra leaned back, impressed. "Plo Koon? That's pretty amazing." He handed back the necklace, and smiled at her. "How's that bump on your head?"

She looked confused. "Bump? What--ow!" She reached up and took off the cloth covering her lekku. "How did that happen?" She looked at Ezra accusingly.

He held up his hands. "Hey, we just saved your life!"
She raised her eyebrows. "As if."

Zeb laughed from the doorway, and Ezra scowled at him playfully. Sabine came in behind the large Lasat, her helmet retrieved from the trooper who had taken it from her. She removed it. "I'm Sabine Wren." She held out her hand, and Arene shook it. "Arene Talkana. Thank you all for saving me."

Sabine smiled slightly. "Actually, that was all--"

Ezra cut her off. "I gotta go talk to Kanan. See you later."

He sent a significant glance to Sabine, silently asking her to help Arene feel at home. She rolled her eyes, but nodded.
Ezra smiled his thanks, and headed to the cockpit.

"Each life in the Force, a flame is. Beautiful. Unique. Glowing and precious, it stands to bravely cast it's own small light against the darkness that would consume it."
