Chapter Four
I wake up the next morning to the sound of sirens outside my home. I quickly jump out of bed to figure out what is going on. I walk down my stairs and grab a stick that shows people I'm blind. Even though I know the layout of my house and the entire neighborhood, its for the image. So that people don't ask questions about me, I don't need that in my daily life. I open my door and begin to call for someone. "Hey, are you Ms. Rivers?" A male voice asks me. "Yes. Might I ask your name?" I ask politely. "I'm Officer Benson. I'm with the Chicago Police Department. Have you heard or seen anything that took place here today?" He asks in a serious tone. I try not to laugh, but fail and let out a small laugh. "What?" He asks in the same tone. "I'm blind sir. I could not have seen any events that occurred here." I explain as polite as possible. "Oh, I'm so sorry. Did you hear anything?" The Officer restates the question. "I just heard sirens and I woke up. I went outside to figure out what happened. May I ask what did occur?" I ask politely. "I can not tell you the details, but there has been a murder across the street of a man named Andrew Sterling. Did you know him or anyone who would want to hurt him?" The Officer asks. I almost drop to knees and cry right in front of him. I hold myself together, and only let my jaw drop. "I knew him... He and I were involved..." I say in a hoarse voice, holding back tears. "Oh, I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sorry to ask you if you will come for questioning. We need to know everyone's story. I hope you understand." Officer Benson says sincerely."I understand." I say as a tear drips from my eye. Officer Benson leads me to the police car and drives me to the station for questioning.
I'm not sure how they could suspect that the blind girl down the street could have anything to do with this murder. A few officers take me to a room and let me sit in a chair in front of an interrogation table. Some footsteps enter the room and they move the chair before probably sitting in it. "This file says that you just moved here. Where did you come from?" The Officer asks. "Boston. I moved after my parents died." I say, like I always tell people when I move. "I'm sorry for your loss. If you don't mind me asking, how did they die?" The officer investigates further. "Its quite alright. They were killed in a car crash, it damaged my sight and caused my blindness." I explain in my usual way. I hear the officer sigh, "do you know anyone who would have wanted to hurt Andrew? Its important for the investigation." He tries to explain, but I know that too well. I nod, showing I understand. "Andrew was friends with everyone he met. I only met him a few weeks ago and I loved him. I don't know anyone who would hurt him, but I do know someone who was mad at him." I explain, remembering the party. "Is that so?" The officer asks curiously. "He and I were at a party and thus girl... Laura. She wanted him to love her, but he said that he was at the party with me and he rejected her. She seemed pretty upset about it." I explain. I hear the officer adjust in his chair and lean on the table. "Do you know her last name? Or where the party was?" He investigates further. "It was at Andrews house. I only know her name and her voice. If you get her here I can tell you if its her voice. I am very good at voices and personalities." I explain to the officer. "Well, I will contact you if necessary. Thank you for your help in the investigation. You may go now." The officer says. I stand from the chair and pull out my stick to feel around the area.
I walk out of the building and head back home. I hear people whisper as I walk by, there has been for a while. People tell me my eyes are very unique, but I don't know if I believe them. However, I'm not sure why anyone would lie about how my eyes look, especially because these people were all from different years, some from the 1800s and some from the 2000s. I just wish I could see what people were talking about.
I walk into my home and instantly sit down on a chair in the corner of the room. I put my face in my hands and cry into them, letting out all of my emotions, finally.
