The Academy And a New Team
Edited
2017 - Any videos from now on will probably not at all relate to the story, they'll just be songs that I like.
Dedication to KJStarLace because she's commented on most of my chapters too :P Thanks.

"Hey Mei, wake up."
The voice roused me from my sleep, I push myself up from the bed.
"Kakashi?" I ask.
"Yeah, I kinda made breakfast. Get ready, you're going to the Academy right?" I nod.
He walks out and I hear the door shut, leaving me to get changed.
I fumble around, trying to find the clothes I discarded last night. I make it to the kitchen without falling or stumbling. Yay for me.
The scent of something sweet tickles my nose.
"What's that?" I ask, feeling hungry.
"I tried to make pancakes, sorry if they taste horrible..." Kakashi says.
I shuffle forwards and find the chair, I sit then breathe in. It smelled amazing.
I pick them up and eat. It takes me a little while to get used to using the fork it but the taste is amazing! The pancakes are light and something sweet and dripping is covering them. I love pancakes!
"They're amazing Kakashi!" I say smiling.
"I- Uh thanks" He replied, probably blushing or something like that.
I finish my food in record time, I don't remember the last time I ate something so nice.
"Right I'll take you to the Academy, I think they are having the tests, so you'll probably have to sit out on the that, but you should train hard in your spare time to catch up."
I nod and follow him out into the street. He leads me for around ten minutes then I hear childrens laughs and screams of joy. I assumed this was the outside part of the academy.
Kakashi leaves me alone in the area and goes into the building, after explaining he'll be right back.
I stand leaning against a tree with my hair covering my face.
I listen to the voices. Most talking about games or ninja jargon that I didn't recognise.
I sigh and look down.
"Hey Mei, I thought you were in the hospital."
I look up through my hair. I'm not sure why I reacted to voices as if I could see who spoke. Habit I guess.
"Um, who are you?" I ask quietly.
"Um... I'm Kiba... Don't you remember me?" He asks sounding upset.
"Sorry, yeah I do now..." Oh God, I didn't want to offend the people who had saved me.
"Er, are you starting at the Academy then?" He asks.
I nod slowly, "Yeah apparently, but I think i'm sitting out of some tests or something..."
"Oh cool! Don't worry about the tests, they're a piece of cake anyway! So who's team do you want to be on?" He sounds really hopeful, why though? Does he want me on his team? Had I made a friend? I thought hopefully.
"I don't know really, how many are on a team?" I ask.
"Three usually."
"Well I'd say probably you and Naruto or the others who found me, I don't really know anybody else..."
"Awesome! Although I doubt you'll be with Naruto." Why does he sound so happy? What did I say?
"Why not Naruto?"
"He never passes the test, he's taken it like three or four times and failed."
"Oh." I frowned slightly, that's a shame for Naruto. I hoped he would pass this time.
"Well you'll probably be put with one of us at least."
I nod, "Cool. So what happens now?"
"Well when it's time everybody goes to their classes and our class is taught by Iruka-sensei, we'll have the test, being called up one by one."
"Ok." I reply. He seems to stay nearby and we stand, content with silence until a bell rings.
"Let's go." He says and grabs my arm, leading me towards the building. Which is useful as all the kids who are trying to get to class are running around, some pushing into me. Without Kiba pulling me, I would be flat on my face in the dirt.
I quickly arrange my hair over my face, covering my blindfold best I could.
He opens a door and walks in, I follow.
"Ah Mei, everybody this is Mei, she's new so treat her well." I hear Iruka's voice.
I also hear whispers from the class.
"You can chose where to sit Mei." Iruka says. I sigh internally, I guessed Iruka had forgotten again.
I nod and carefully walk to a desk at the front, luckily there's an empty seat so I sit.
"Hiya, I'm Ino!" She voice says chirpily, shocking me, I hadn't realised someone was there.
"Mei." I reply and smile.
She stays quiet for a minute then whispers to me, "Can you see with that thing on? Or should I not ask?"
I freeze, "It's kind of personal, please don't tell people..." I say quietly.
She nods, "It looks kinda cool though..."
How could this ever look cool? I probably looked like some freak, "Seriously?"
"Yeah and the colour of your hair looks so pretty!"
What's wrong with this girl? "Pretty?" I ask slightly confused.
What colour is my hair?
"I wish my hair was that colour, maybe then Sasuke would notice me... He's noticed you... Wait! He's mine! You can't have Sasuke okay?"
I nod slowly, "I don't even know Sasuke..."
"He's the really nice looking boy near the back."
"Well he's all yours Ino." I smile at her, not bothering to pretend to look.
"Wow! Thanks! Can you help me get rid of Sakura from him? She likes him too, but he's mine and she doesn't deserve him." Wow this girl was seriously obsessed.
"I can't really do that, I don't know who Sakura is and it's nothing to do with me... Sorry Ino."
"Oh, right... Thanks anyway." She says.
"Okay, when I call your name come through for the tests. First up Shikamaru Nara." Iruka sensei says loudly.
I wait patiently as people are called out of the class.
Soon Ino goes too, chattering as she goes.
The last person leaves and someone walks up to me, "Mei, on the Hokage's orders you have passed the test without having to take it, here is your headband." He places something in front of me, "He thinks you will do well to learn and catch up. You'll have a sort or trial period, if it's too difficult we can put you back in the academy so you can learn properly."
I nod, take it and walk out of the room.
I wrap it around my arm, tying it at my wrist.
The group outside are all chatting and squealing from excitement. I guessed most had succeeded in passing.
I wander for a bit.
"Hi Mei-chan." I hear a sad voice say.
"Naruto? What's wrong?" I ask.
I hear the people behind me whispering.
"I didn't pass." He says.
"So?"
He sounds confused, "I didn't pass so I can't become a ninja. I can't be the Hokage."
"That's not true. You've taken the test before right?"
He nods.
"Well take it again."
"Huh?"
"You can take it again, can't you? You shouldn't give up just because you didn't pass. We're only kids, not everything is possible for us on first try." I say and smile.
"Really?"
"Yeah. Don't give up Naruto. You'll be a great ninja. I swear! I bet you'll be valuable to the village. Don't worry about people who look down on you, they aren't worth it. They don't know everything about you so their opinion should be useless to you."
I can tell that he's smiling now, "Wow thanks Mei-chan! You're great! I'll pass next time I swear to you!"
"Good." I say and smile.
I talk with him for a while, I ask him a bit about ninjas, how it all works. He explains a bit about Chakra and Jutsus and ninjutsu.
"Mei! Kakashi is here." Iruka's voice rings out.
I stand, "Bye Naruto."
He waves as I exit the Academy.
"Hey Mei, how was your first day?" I hear Kakashi ask.
"Good, I met Naruto again and Kiba, I saw some of the others too and I met someone called Ino." I say and smile.
I walk with him back home and lie on my bed. I wasn't even tired but ended up falling asleep right then and there.
I wake up, feeling disorientated. As I usually do most mornings.
I sit up and yawn, running my fingers through my hair. I change quickly and go downstairs.
"Teams today kiddo." Kakashi calls out from the kitchen.
"Oh yeah." I sit at the kitchen table like yesterday.
"You must be hungry, you didn't have dinner." He says.
I nod and he puts something in front of me.
"What is this?" I ask.
"Cereals." He places a spoon in my hand.
I dip the spoon in the bowl and catch something, the spoon feeling heavier. The 'cereal' was nice, an interesting choice.
When I finish I put the bowl and spoon in the sink.
"Right, do you remember the way to the Academy? I'm busy morning so I can't take you." Kakashi says.
"Um, I think so..." I walk with him outside the house and to the corner.
"Ok good. I'll see you later!" He leaves, heading the opposite way.
I slowly walk the way that I remember, my hands trailing along walls. A slight feeling of panic every time I had to cross another street to reach a building that would guide me further. Luckily nobody was really in the streets as I fell over once and stumbled a few times.
I arrived at the Academy, just before the bell rang, and headed to class.
"Hey Mei!" I hear a familiar voice call.
"Naruto! Hi, I thought you didn't pass?" I reply.
"Uh, yeah well I did in the end... Last night, quite late. I um stole a scroll and learnt an awesome new jutsu! Which I'll show you-
"It's ok." I say quickly, knowing I wouldn't be able to see it anyway.
"Oh, yeah, so who are you hoping to be on a team with?" He asks.
"Either you, Kiba or one of the others like Ino or the boys... um, Choji and Shikamaru." I say.
I walk beside Naruto to the classroom.
"Awesome, well I'll show you my new jutsu later!" I hear him walk away.
I sit at the front again at an empty desk. Ino is sat near the back this time so I'm alone. Which suits me just fine. I let my thoughts cloud my head.
I rest my head on the desk, my hair spilling around me.
"Hey your the new girl right?"
I lift my head slightly, "I have a name." I say calmly to the boy.
"Mei? Is it?"
I nod, hiding behind my hair.
"Can I sit here." He says it more as a statement.
I nod slowly.
He sits down beside me, I suddenly realize that the class has gone silent.
"I'm Sasuke." The boy says.
I ignore him and put my head back on my arms.
"Hello class!" Iruka sensei says from the front.
"Today you'll be put into your new teams." Whispers and talking can be heard.
I zone out as he starts to call out the teams.
"-Mei."
I sit up as Iruka says my name, "Yeah?"
"Team seven." He sighs.
"Right." I stand up and concentrate on not tripping as I walk out of the classroom and follow the three people in front of me. I wonder who they are...
I follow them into a different room and stand awkwardly at the side by the door.
I hear movement.
"Naruto, our sensei is a Jounin! He wouldn't fall for that!" A girlish voice exclaims. Naruto? He's on this team?
"That's what he gets for being late." Naruto replies.
I grin, slightly getting caught up in the practical joke.
A few minutes later I hear somebody open the door then Naruto burst out laughing.
"He fell for it! Ha!"
"Sensei! I'm sorry! I told him not to!" The girl apologises.
"Well my first impression of you guys is... you're idiots." A familiar voices says calmly.
I sit up and try to remember. I knew the voice.
"Let's go to the roof." He says.
I follow my new team up some stairs, tripping twice.
"Right, introductions, names, likes, dislikes, hobbies and dreams for the future." The sensei says.
"Sensei why don't you start, to show us what to say." The girls says.
"Well my name is Kakashi Hatake," Kakashi! How could I not recognise his voice? He's our team leader?
"I don't really feel like telling you my likes or dislikes, I have a lot of hobbies and my dream for the future... I've never really thought about it." I sigh.
"You only told us your name!" The girl yells.
"You." Kakashi says probably pointing at somebody.
"Believe it. My name is Naruto Uzumaki. I like instant Ramen in a cup and I really like the Ramen that Iruka sensei got me at Ichiraku's. But I hate the three minutes you have to wait after you pour the water into the Ramen cup. My hobby is eating different kinds of Ramen. My future dream is to be the greatest Hokage! Then the whole village will stop disrespecting me and start treating me like i'm somebody!"
I grin at his catchphrase.
"Next" Kakashi says.
"My name Is Sakura Haruno. I like.. Well the person I like is..." She giggles. "My hobbies are... and my dream for the future..." She giggles again. What's wrong with her?
"Dislikes?" Kakashi asks.
"NARUTO!" She yells.
I hear Naruto cry and start to feel a bit sorry for him. Why'd this boy get so much hate?
"That's not nice Sakura." I say. I can tell she's looking at me even though I'm looking at my feet.
"You?" Kakashi asks.
"Sasuke Uchiha. I don't like much, I dislike a lot of things. I don't really have any hobbies and my dream well aim for the future is to restore my clan and to kill a certain man." His voice sounds muffled.
"Lastly?" Kakashi asks.
I guess he means me, "I'm... Mei. I don't have a clan name. I like silence and I like forests. I don't like fire. My hobbies... I don't really know. My dream for the future is to see." I say the last part quietly.
Kaakshi stays quiet and I can tell that the others are confused.
"Well we have a test tomorrow. Meet at the training grounds at six sharp. Oh and don't have any breakfast... You might throw up."
Stuff him. I'll eat breakfast If I want to.
He disappeared in puff.
"Hey! Mei! What did you mean that you want to see?" Naruto asks at the same time as Sakura.
I stand up, my hair still over my face, "I can't see" I say.
"Aw but Mei-Chan! Is it to do with your blindfold? If you want to see then take it off!" Naruto exclaims.
I freeze and look up, my hair falling back.
"Blindfold?" Sakura asks staring at me.
Sasuke is still here too, watching.
I reached under my hair and untie the knot of my blindfold. I pull it away and open my eyes.
Grey-whiteness greets me, so does three shocked gasps.
"Mei-"
"Your eyes-"
"Yeah. That's why I wear a blindfold. I don't know what I look like, all I know is that it probably isn't pretty. Don't ask about it, I don't really remember anything." I tie the blindfold back and turn away.
I walk away from my confused and shocked team mates.
I felt slight satisfaction at their shock. Serves them right for being nosy.
Back at Kakashi's house I sit on my bed thoughts rushing through my head.
"Hey kiddo." Kakashi says from the door.
"Hi." I reply.
"Does the Hokage know about your eyes?"
"Uh... Yeah..."
"Alright," He replies. Then there's silence. Unsure of what to say?
"Can I go to the library?" I ask.
"Yeah, why do you want to go there?"
"I just want to look something up." I say.
"Alright... But uh... you wouldn't really be able to like... read?
"I am aware of that," I sigh.
"It's opposite the Academy." He replies, "Sorry Mei," I hear footsteps walking away.
Soon I arrive at the library, slowly making my way inside I pause. Feeling stupid. I had no idea where anything was.
"Hello, can I help?" A female asks.
"Yes please. Do you have anything related to eye jutsus or blindness?" I ask.
She probably looks up and see my blindfold, "Oh, oh dear. Oh hon! Oh yes I think we have something. Stay here. I'll go fetch them. You sit there." She she leads me to a chair. I sit as she hurries away. Rushed footsteps.
I hear her return after a short while.
"Ok I found lots, what specifically are you looking for?" She asks quietly, books drop down to the desk, one by one..
"Something that could help me to see." I reply.
She sorts through the books and finds one, "Ah, this might be useful."
I hear pages turning, "By something to help you see, do you mean like an object or a jutsu or something different?"
"Well I just really want to see. I don't really care how difficult or complicated it is."
I hear her flicking through the pages again, "Well most of these are to help eyes that are swollen or damaged, but there is one... hmm. It's not forbidden although it may sound like it is, but it is extremely difficult. Although something like this you should probably go to a medical ninja about... but anyway this is called Portarbijon, portal vision. You have to create your own person with chakra and some complicated stuff, then perform a difficult jutsu on that created person who will then turn into your Portabijon."
"Why not use a real person or animal?" I ask.
"No no! A real person or animal would lose their own sight and would be in your control, as soon as you stopped needing them they'd die most likely, this is why it is almost a forbidden technique. I think you should maybe try a medical ninja, this sounds very dangerous. Maybe if you're lucky! You might find the legendary Sannin! Tsunade! She is a master medical nin!" The Librarian rambles on with stories that she heard about Tsunade.
I frowned a bit. Don't get me wrong, she sounds interesting, maybe a second option but the first one sounded better.
"May I take out that book? I could show my guardian, he might be able to come up with something less dangerous." I say sweetly.
She doesn't reply for a minute, "Oh well I guess, if you promise not to try anything stupid!"
I nod and she checks out the book.
She hands it to me carefully, making sure I'm holding it before letting go.
I leave with a smile, but sigh as soon as I'm out. I rub my fingers over the cover of the book as I walk back home. When I open the door I hide the book behind my back as I rush up the stairs. I yell 'hello' to Kakashi then shut the door in my room.
I put the book under my pillow planning to ask somebody about it tomorrow. I curse my eyes once again for not letting me read it.
