Surrounded by darkness, Audrey woke up, finding herself laying on a bed, not remembering a thing. As she tried to get up, something was holding her back. She couldn't see a thing in the pitch-black void, but the clinking sound of chains echoed around her. No matter how hard she pulled, the restraints wouldn't budge—she was trapped.
How did I get here?
Her mind swirled with questions and uncertainty, struggling to recall her last moments. All she could summon was a fleeting image of herself in a car, a vague thread leading her to this unfamiliar place. The door creaked open, and her pulse quickened with fear as the lights flickered on. Her eyes widened in surprise as she took in the sight of the man who had just entered. His walnut-brown hair and warm brown eyes exuded a calm, reassuring presence.
"You're finally awake," the stranger greeted her.
Uncertain, Audrey stammered, "Wh-Who are you?"
"I'm Jake," the young man replied, extending his hand for a handshake.
Audrey hesitated, her confusion palpable. Instead of reciprocating, she voiced the burning question on her mind, "Where am I? Why am I here?"
Jake's smile remained, his demeanor calm as he reassured her, "Somewhere safe. You were unconscious in a car nearby, so we brought you here."
Unconscious?
"Then why am I chained to the wall?"
"We weren't sure when you would wake up, and we didn't want you to escape. You would have nowhere else to go."
Audrey gave Jake a perplexed look. "What do you mean?"
Jake's expression darkened as haunting memories flooded her mind. The once sparkling brightness in his eyes dimmed, his lips parting as he struggled to find the right words.
"We had a massive meteor shower," he explained.
Audrey's eyes widened in disbelief, her mouth slightly agape as she processed the information. She remembered the news about the meteor shower months ago, brushing it off as a hoax. But now, a wave of shock washed over her, refusing to let her fully accept Jake's words.
"I don't remember anything."
"You were unconscious for ten days."
"What?!" Audrey exclaimed in shock.
Before Audrey could ask more questions, Jake spoke up, redirecting her focus. "Come on, let me introduce you to the rest of the group."
With a gentle gesture, Jake removed the chain around Audrey's ankle. She remained frozen, struggling to process everything that was happening.
"Are you coming?" He asked.
Audrey awkwardly rose from the bed and followed Jake out of the room.
Two women were sitting on the couch, in a conversation. Their chatter stopped as they noticed Jake entering with Audrey.
"She's finally awake," Jake announced to the others.
"I'm Hana," One woman added with a warm smile.
"I'm Brooke," the other said, her tone flat.
"I'm Audrey," Audrey replied, her voice tinged with shyness.
"There are three other guys, but they're out hunting for food," Jake informed her.
Audrey took in her surroundings. The place was cramped and dimly lit, with concrete walls that pressed in on all sides. A small, humming fridge sat against one wall, its surface covered in scratches and dents. Alongside it, shelves were stocked with dusty cans and bottled water. Above her, a single lightbulb cast a faint, flickering glow, while a heavy metal door was embedded in the ceiling, slightly ajar. A rusted ladder led up to it, the only visible escape route from the cold, isolated space below.
"What is this place?" Audrey asked, glancing around.
"It's an underground bunker," Jake replied.
"My brother Kai found it. Then we all helped put it together." Hana added.
The ceiling door opened, immediately drawing everyone's attention. A lifeless deer was dropped to the ground with a heavy thud before three men descended the ladder. Their eyes briefly scanned the room, landing on Audrey, who stood there, visibly uneasy.
"This is Audrey," Jake said, motioning to her. "The one who was unconscious for ten days."
"I'm Cyrus," one of the men said with a broad smile, extending his hand for a firm shake.
"Wyatt," the second nodded.
"Kai," the third muttered, his voice emotionless.
Audrey couldn't help but take in Kai's appearance. His tousled jet-black hair framed his sharp jawline, and full lips, creating a striking blend of strength and allure. Standing nearly six feet tall, his athletic build only amplified his commanding presence.
She snapped out of her gaze as Brooke spoke.
"Are we gonna keep talking, or are we gonna make dinner?"
"Come on," Hana chimed, heading toward the stove, with Brooke following close behind.
"Is there anything else to eat?" Audrey asked.
"Why?" Kai raised an eyebrow.
"I'm a vegetarian." Audrey answered.
Kai looked at her like she was speaking gibberish.
"Well you can eat the grass outside if you want. I don't think it's clean though." He said, sarcastically.
Audrey was taken aback by his rudeness.
"Dude, really?" Jake scolded him.
"It's not my fault that she's being unrealistic." Kai shrugged.
"Excuse me?" Audrey furrowed her eyebrows.
"We just survived a meteor shower, and food's already hard to come by out here in the woods. Do you really think we have the luxury of being picky right now?" Kai said, his tone edged with bitterness.
Audrey was speechless.
"Either eat up or starve." Kai said curtly, dropping into a chair at the table near the stove.
"Sorry, he can be a bit blunt sometimes," Jake said with an apologetic smile. "We picked some strawberries earlier, if you'd like to have some."
"Okay," Audrey replied with a nod.
Jake went to the fridge and Audrey took a seat at the table across from Kai who was glaring at her. She noticed and avoided making eye contact with him. Jake came back with a handful of strawberries to give to the woman, before taking a seat next to her. Audrey thanked him before eating the strawberries.
After Brooke and Hana finished cooking the meat, everyone else sat at the table to eat. Audrey was looking at everyone eating the deer meat with disgust. Kai stopped eating when he noticed the expression on the woman's face.
"Are you going to eat it or what?" He said sharply.
"Kai," Hana said softly, a hint of reproach in her voice, urging him to stop picking on their new guest.
"No, it's ok." Audrey shook her head. "I'll give the deer a try."
Kai held out his fork, a piece of deer meat speared on it. She stared at it, hesitating to take a bite.
"Eat it before it gets cold." He said, slightly annoyed.
Everyone watched Audrey as she took a bite out of the meat. She gagged and spit it out instantly.
"I should have just left you in the car." Kai shook his head with a displeased look on his face.
"Well how am I supposed to know if you guys aren't just making this up?" Audrey asked out of anger. "Like you guys probably kidnapped me or something."
Everyone exchanged looks with each other while Audrey was waiting for someone to speak up. Kai's laugh broke the silence.
"What's so funny?" Audrey narrowed her eyes at the jet-black haired man.
"You." Kai answered. "Have you not heard the news about the meteor shower?"
"Give her a break. She just woke up from after ten days." Jake defended the girl.
"Yeah, she still doesn't remember what happened." Hana agreed.
"It could've been fake news. Someone either show me proof or I'm going home." Audrey stood up from her chair.
Kai waved at her. "Okay, bye."
"If you don't want to believe us then we're not going to stop you from leaving." Brooke spoke, siding with Kai.
"Why are you two acting like this?" Hana asked Kai and Brooke.
"Yeah, are you two mad that we have a new person to share our food with?" Jake added.
"Not even." Kai scoffed. "It's just that if we go out into the city, she would hold us back from who knows what?"
Audrey furrowed her eyebrows. "What are you talking about?"
"Do you remember Lauren Tang, the astronomer from Harvard who predicted the meteor shower hitting Earth?" Cyrus asked.
"Yeah," she nodded.
"She also warned that it might emit radioactive waves that could cause mutations. We were waiting for you to wake up so we could go out and explore to see what's out there." Cyrus explained.
Wyatt nodded. "We've been preparing for this."
"That sounds ridiculous. I'm out." Audrey walked out of the kitchen, heading to the door.
"Audrey, wait!" Hana went after the girl.
Audrey ignored him and climbed up the ladder. She opened the door, stepping outside. She looked at the orange sky and smiled at how beautiful it looked. She then looked down from the sky and her face fell. The road has big cracks and the holes looked big enough for the meteor that they were talking about. Some of the trees from the woods were destroyed as well. She then spotted a familiar car that was flipped over near a fallen tree.
"That's the car we found you in." Hana said, who is now next to her.
Memories flashed through Audrey's head, starting to remember what happened before she was in a coma.
"I was in the car with my brother..." She whispered, still staring at the car.
She then turned to Hana, with wide eyes. "Where is he?"
Hana gave the woman a confused look. "Who?"
"Where's my brother!" Audrey grabbed both of Hanna's shoulders, shaking her.
Then she was pushed down to the ground, unexpectedly. She looked up and Kai was glaring down at her.
"Who the fuck do you think you are?! We bring you in and then you're trying to hurt one of us?!" He snapped.
"Kai, stop. She didn't hurt me." Hana told him as she helped Audrey get up.
The others came outside, seeing the scene in front of them.
"What the hell is going on?" Cyrus asked.
"My brother was also in the car with me! Where is he?!" Audrey cried.
"There was no one else in the car when we found you." Cyrus answered, truthfully.
"I remembered my brother was with me; that's his car," Audrey said as she rushed over to the vehicle. Everyone followed, eyeing the dark blue vehicle.
"Be careful, there's a hole behind you," Jake warned Audrey, pointing at the ground.
Audrey turned around, peering into the darkness.
"Liam!" Her voice echoed into the hole. Silence greeted her, amplifying her worry.
"Liam!" She shouted again, desperation evident in her voice. But still, there was no response from her brother.
"We have to go down there and find him," Audrey insisted, turning to the group.
"No," Kai replied, arms crossed firmly.
"Please," Audrey begged, her tone pleading.
Jake smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry, we'll help you find him."
Kai furrowed his eyebrows. "What if he's not down there? It's going to be a waste of time."
Jake narrowed his eyes at him. "Stop being so negative."
Kai rolled his eyes, but didn't argue further.
"Mission, finding Audrey's brother starts now." Jake said as he went back to bunker with the others while Kai and Audrey were left behind.
"If you ever try to hurt one of us again, especially Hanna, I'll make you disappear." Kai threatened her.
Audrey gulped in fear.
