Chapter 5: Ray of Hope
Meanwhile, in the digital realm, Evelyn remained lying on the ground, unable to move. One week had passed, but in the virtual realm the sun had risen and set only two times. The pain in Evelyn's limbs persisted, and frustration bubbled within her. She stared at the virtual sky, contemplating the meaning of her life and cursing the heck out of her useless saviour.
All these thoughts made her feel crazy and frustrated.
"Level 58, Warrior: Cipher, has logged in.” the robotic voice said.
Evelyn, hearing the familiar sound of a player entering the game, opened her eyes. "Can please you help me?" she asked, her voice filled with a mixture of desperation and anticipation, countless people logged in and out of the game but her attempts to get help from them was fruitless.
Cipher who logged back into the game. Scanned the virtual surroundings for the source of voice he just heard, only to find Evelyn in the same spot. A whole week had passed, yet she hadn't moved an inch.
He moved towards her and gave her a weirded-out look, his eyebrows raised. "You're still here? In the same spot? For a whole week?"
Evelyn looked up at him blankly and nodded, "Ughhh, help me if you can or fuck off. And FYI don't get stuck like me 'cause nobody's gonna help you getting out." She said in a quiet mocking voice with a maniac smirk on her face.
Jungkook scratched his head, trying to make sense of the situation. "How did you manage to get stuck in one place for one week? Have you been lying in your room like this?"
Evelyn sighed, realizing the complexity of her explanation. "Jesus Christ, I got stuck in flesh and blood in this damned game, which is why I got hurt in the first place!"
"Why don't you just simply log out of the game girl?"
Evelyn's frustration grew. "If it were that simple I would have logged out of this hell hole but guess what Mr. Genius, I'm stuck like in the Jumanji movie, believe me or not but that's the truth."
He hesitated for a moment, contemplating whether he should help this seemingly helpless player or not. Despite his initial reluctance, a sense of duty stirred within him. With a resigned sigh, he bent down and lifted Evelyn from the ground, surprised by her weight.
"Wow, you're quite heavy for a virtual avatar," Cipher remarked, struggling a bit under her weight.
As Cipher struggled to carry Evelyn, she couldn't resist teasing him. "Come on, Cipher, put those virtual muscles to work," she quipped, trying to lighten the mood.
Cipher shot her a glare, his virtual face flushed with exertion. "This isn't exactly a walk in the park, you know, by the way the game effects are damn good I can even feel your weight." he grumbled, adjusting his grip on her.
Evelyn chuckled, enjoying the banter despite their predicament. "I'll make it up to you once we get out of here. I'll treat you to a protein shake," she offered with a grin.
Cipher rolled his eyes, but a small smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. "Sounds thrilling, now if you utter another word I'll drop you here and go my merry way" he replied dryly.
"One last question I'll be quiet after that!" Evelyn piped looking at Cipher who sighed yet nodded. "Do you not have some kind of transportation? Yk a magical beast companion or a horse or maybe a flying chariot?"
"Nope, this game doesn't offer any chariot or something but yeah we can get a mythical companion at level 60 after completing quests" he explained calmly understanding the reason she asked him the question.
Eventually, they reached the infirmary, where an NPC greeted them with a cheerful smile. "Ah, another adventurer in need of assistance! Let's get you patched up, shall we?"
The NPC quickly got to work without any questions, administering virtual treatment to heal her injuries.
To Evelyn's surprise, the process was swift and effective. In no time, she felt the pain subsiding and her strength returning, even her scans formed from the scratches had disappeared.
As they stood in the virtual infirmary, Evelyn couldn't shake the feeling of being scrutinized by Cipher.
"You're still convinced that I'm just making this up, aren't you?" Evelyn asked, her voice tinged with frustration.
Cipher's expression remained guarded as he glanced at her. "It's possible," he replied cryptically, his tone unreadable.
Evelyn's patience wore thin as she stared back at him. "I'm telling you the truth, . I'm not making this up," she insisted, her voice tinged with urgency.
Cipher eyed her suspiciously, a glimmer of doubt flickering in his eyes. "And how am I supposed to believe you?" he countered, his tone tinged with skepticism.
Frustration bubbled within Evelyn as she searched for a way to convince him. "I can give you my phone number. You can call it and check," she suggested, desperation evident in her voice.
Cipher's gaze softened slightly at her plea, but his wariness remained. "Do you happen to find who I really am? Do you recognise me somehow?" he asked, his tone guarded.
Confusion flashed across Evelyn's face. "How could I? It's not like your real appearance is being shown. Is it just not your avatar," she retorted, perplexed by his question.
Cipher's eyes narrowed as a thought crossed his mind. "Are you ARMY?" he asked suddenly.
Evelyn blinked in surprise at the abrupt change of topic. "Um, not exactly. I'm more of a Stay, but I do listen to BTS occasionally," she admitted, thrown off by his question.
A flicker of surprise crossed Cipher's face at her response, but he quickly masked it. "I see," he muttered, his tone neutral.
Evelyn couldn't help but feel uneasy at his reaction. "You're not some crazy obsessive fan of BTS who thinks that they should be worshipped and everyone should like them or something. Are you?" she asked cautiously, her voice tinged with apprehension.
Cipher's expression darkened at her words, his jaw tensing with irritation. "No it's nothing like that," he replied curtly, his tone clipped.
"So, shall I tell you my number?" She asks him her tone somewhat hopeful.
"Just send it in the chat box." He replies curtly.
"And how do I do that?"
Cipher sighed audibly, a hint of frustration seeping into his voice. With a resigned air, he demonstrated by tapping on his wrist band, summoning a blue holographic screen filled with various options, including a log out button.
Following his instructions, Evelyn tapped on her wrist band, but to her dismay, nothing happened only a blank holographic screen popped up. She tried again, her fingers dancing over the interface with increasing urgency, yet still, the screen remained stubbornly blank. She glanced up at Cipher, meeting his virtual eyes with a mixture of frustration and disappointment. "See? It's not working."
For a moment they stood there in silence, lost in thought and contemplating on what to do.
After a few more seconds Cipher decides to break the silence. "Tell me your number." he says in resignation.
Evelyn brightens up hearing those words leave his mouth and enthusiastically recites her number to him.
"So when will you call?" She asks her voice filled with anticipation.
"Whenever I'm free," he replies shrugging and without another word he exits the game, leaving Evelyn feeling a bit dejected yet with a ray of hope.
....
Jungkook was startled by his bandmate Jimin who had forcefully dragged him out of the virtual world by yanking out his VR head gear and shutting down the PC.
Jungkook shot an annoyed glance at him, who stood there with a bored expression.
"Hyung! Why would you do that!?" Jungkook asked.
"Break time's over, dumbo. Every one is waiting for you in the practice room." Jimin replied casually.
"You could've just called me or tapped me on the shoulder, why would you yank it out and cause a mess? I was talking to someone!!"
"Jungkook, I did call you out and I tapped on your shoulder. Hell I even smacked your head but you were so into it that you didn't notice, so stop yelling at me and come to practice." Jimin rapped out leaving the room.
Jungkook followed silently with a sigh, and caught up with the older.
Jimin side eyed him and asked, "Was it a girl?"
Jungkook's eyes widened in surprise at Jimin's accurate deduction, causing him to stumble over his words. "H-how did you know?"
With a chuckle, Jimin confirmed Jungkook's suspicions. "Come on, Kookie, I can tell when you're talking to a girl," he teased, nudging him playfully.
Jungkook's cheeks flushed slightly at the revelation, but he quickly regained his composure. "I didn't say it was a girl!" he countered, trying to play it cool.
Jimin just patted him on the back with a bright smile. "It's okay, I understand," he replied, his tone reassuring. "Just make sure it doesn't affect your profession too much, and keep it a secret from the agency, alright?"
Before Jungkook could explain further, Jimin quipped, "I support you bro," and entered the practice room, leaving Jungkook feeling dumbfounded.
Joining the other members in the practice room, Jungkook was met with annoyed glances as he sheepishly took his place. With J-Hope leading the way, they dove into their practice, each step perfectly coordinated under his watchful eye.
