"I'm going to miss you," Charlie said, his voice soft.
Jane smiled at him. She was sitting on her bed, too weak to walk around. Charlie knew that she had been hiding her legs and her arms under the cover whenever he came in. He knew that she didn't want him to see her this sick, this weak and vulnerable. It made his heart ache.
He was going to leave today and go home, much to the joy and relief of his mother. He didn't want to leave Jane but knew that she was right in a way. His life had been on pause and he was intent on keeping it on pause for Jane but she didn't want that.
Charlie knew that she yearned for a normal life now. Any life was better than this but she couldn't have that. He had what she wanted and he felt that it was important to her that he go back and unpaused his life. She couldn't do the same so she wanted Charlie to do it.
But will he really be able to unpause his life even if he went back? And what about Jane? How long will her life be paused?
"I already miss you," Jane confessed, smiling wider and her eyes shimmered with tears.
Charlie leaned down and hugged her tight, as her frail arms wrapped around him. They stayed like that for what seemed like a long time and Jane was the one who pulled away first.
Charlie's hands still lingered on her shoulders. He really didn't want to go.
"Goodbye, Charlotte."
It was like a knife to his heart. The way she'd said those words made him feel like she wasn't planning on seeing him ever again. He searched her face but she covered it with her hands, as she started to cry.
"Jane?"
Why had she said it like that?
"Jane?"
Why did he feel like she was saying goodbye for real?
"Jane!"
"What! Just go!" She sobbed. "It's hard to see you leave, okay? Just go! Please! Please, Charlie, just go. I'll text you on Wattpad or something. Just go. Please."
But Charlie didn't go just then. He reached down again and grabbed her, holding her shaking frame to his. He hadn't realized that he had started crying too. He didn't want to go. He'd rather stay here and put his life on pause forever.
