Chapter 2: A Brand New Year part 2

My name is Cassidy Smith and I'm a terrible person. I did something horrible to the person I love the most in the whole wide world, Butch. He means everything to me but I betrayed him by making out with another boy. Why am I so stupid? I couldn't live without him. I don't even want to try. I don't know what to do. Everything is falling apart.

Cassidy Smith sent a look of disgust Jessie's way. She wore a white mini skirt that hugs against her thighs. She wore a black crop top underneath her white short sleeves shirt and black thigh-high boots that hug her legs. Needless to say, Jessie wasn't wearing an appropriate outfit for school.

"You look like a pig Jess," Cassidy said a mixture of disgust and pleasure echoing through her voice.

Jessie rolled her eyes.

"Oh poor Cassidy, can't hold your jealousy in anymore?" She retorted.

Cassidy laughed.

"You must be joking! You look like you stepped out of a book on how to to get guys to make out with you."

Jessie glared at Cassidy angrily her words would like a stab to her heart, both irritating and painful.

"You know, I don't know how I could have been friends with you, Jessie. And know what else? Our friendship is officially over!" Cassidy said viciously, before turning on her heel and stalking away.

Jessie cursed her former best friend under her breath.

'Who needs her anyway? Not me. I don't need anybody. People just get in the way. I'm fine on my own."' She mused, though deep down she knew she was trying to convince herself of this more than she believed.

Jessie had one miserable friendship after another. They have all ended this way, and she had never tried to patch them up. Cassidy had been her longest friend through their relationship had always been sour. Perhaps she was simply meant to be alone. But did she really want to be alone for the rest of her life?

Jessie opened her locker with more force than necessary as these thoughts filled her mind. She looked over at James who was standing nearby glanced over at her.

James was one of those rich kid snobs. He hardly ever spoken two words to her. He hung around with the other rich kids with perfect lives and perfect families, like Jessibelle and Giselle. They all made her feel like she didn't deserve to be at Viridian City High because she was poor. Her mother saved up money for her to go to school before she died and had to work hard for her to go to this school.

She stood out from everyone else, through and there made it known when they constantly taunted her. James wasn't as rude as the others. In fact, he seemed like a nice guy. But she wouldn't know because nice people don't get involved with someone as immoral as Jessie. Jesse could feel the familiar feeling of tears threatening to develop in her eyes, but forced them away. She never cried, not since her mother had died. What was the point? Nobody cared anyway.

My name is James Morgan and by the end of this year. I will probably be receiving my acceptance into a  medical degree. A degree I don't want, but my father wants me to get one. Because his father is a doctor, as was his father...and so on. But he doesn't know that the dream he has for me isn't the dream I have for myself. I don't want to be a doctor. I want to be free from his expectations and plan my own future corroding to my own goals. Sadly that not going to happen. So I guess I'm going to accept then be nothing but an unhappy clone. All I want is freedom from his expectations.

It felt like James unloaded a bucket of secrets, feelings he'd kept inside, unable to tell anyone. If his father found out that he felt this way about his career. He would disown him and never forgive him. The Morgan's family legacy was resting on James's shoulders, but for him, it was a burden weighing him down.

The murmur of teenagers filled the air was getting louder and louder as they roam the halls. It was the middle of break time before their first class. Janes walked over to his friend Jessebelle, Giselle, and Gary.

Jessebelle Barclay is my name, and I don't have to worry about this year, because I know I'm going to get exactly want I want. I always do, I'm a Barclay after all. That means... I will get straight A's. I'll get into the medical school my father went to, and I'll be with James. If  I am missing one of those things by graduation, I will give up all my credit cards.

Jessebelle Barclay tossed her shiny Burgundy hair over her shoulder in a large display of attention, catching the eyes of many passersby. Gisselle Robinson who sat beside her did the same. They looked like a picture of models advertising Viridian City High starting from hair down to their shoes.

James chuckled as he walked up to Jessibelle and kissed her on the cheek.

"Looking, gorgeous Belle."

"Of course!" She smiled innocently at him. James rolled his eyes inwardly.

James has known Jessebelle all his life. Their families had been friends for many years because their fathers were both wonderful doctors in Viridian City. Belle didn’t waste a second showing off that she was rich, beautiful, smart, and talented. She beamed as a girl walked by holding a magazine with her on the front cover. James, on the other hand, is more reserved about his wealth. He never bragged about it, and associated with all types of people, whether they were rich or poor.

"These people are all so daggy. I mean, look at that hairstyle," She said as she pointed to Lyra, who was walking by. "I mean, I used to wear my hair in Pigtails when I was five years old."

"I know, I mean, get a fashion sense," Giselle agreed.

Lyra rolled her eyes knowing she was being talked about and glared at Jessebelle who scoffed back at her.

James rolled his eyes at the girls.

"Oh leave her alone guys, not everyone has the same opinion as you do," James said angrily. Jessebelle raised an eyebrow at James' retort.

"What's the matter, Jim? You're not turning soft on us, are you?" Giselle asked, half amused.

James stared ahead, not answering her question. He didn’t know why, but his friends’ attitudes were bothering him to the point where he couldn’t stand to be near them. What had changed? He didn’t know.

'Maybe I grew up, he thought sarcastically but didn’t dismiss the notion. Perhaps he had grown up. Perhaps joining in with his friends wasn’t so fun after all. Perhaps he just needed a change, of everything.

James sighed hopelessly. All he knew was that he couldn’t be near these people anymore, and he walked away without a word, quickly solving that problem.

"What’s with him?" Jessebelle asked aloud.

"PMS?" Giselle suggested, and the two burst into a fit of laughter.

My name is Jessica Rosewood, but prefer Jessie, and I hate about almost about everything. I hate school, home, friends, people, boys, money... I hate life. Why does everything have to be so hard for me? I look around and see everyone smiling, happy, and it makes me ANGRY! Why should they have it all and not me? Why am I so unlucky? Well, guess there is one good thing in my life which is my pet Meowth. My half-brother in eighth grade also isn't too bad.

Jessie sighed as she sat alone in the cafeteria. She didn't usually hang out here during the break before the first class, but she had nowhere else to be since Cassidy now hated her guts. The cafeteria was pretty much deserted, except for a few kids from grade nine and kids from grade ten, and some people buying food for breakfast. People usually spent their free time outside, especially in the nice weather like they were having today, but Jessie wasn’t in the mood for the Sun.

"You mind if I sit here?” she heard a male voice ask. Looking up, she found James Morgan’s emerald green eyes staring down at her. Snapping out of her state of self-pity, she nodded. She and James weren’t friends, but at the moment Jessie could care less. Though she was curious as to why he wanted to sit with her...

James sat on the chair across from her, putting a few textbooks down on the table.

"Hi," Jessie said.

"Hi. How come you're not sitting with your friends?" James asked.

"I don't have any," Jessie answered rolling her eyes. "You?" James shrugged.

"Me neither."

"I don't know how you could ever have considered those losers as your friends in the first place," She said. James smirked.

"I had no choice. Jessibelke is a friend of the family."

Jessie laughed.

"Oh, your poor family."

'Underneath all that make-up she is really beautiful. Especially went her hair down instead of using hair gel or a ponytail to hold it back. I never noticed before how beautiful she was or how long her hair is.' James thought as he chuckled at her comment.

"So what do you plan to do when you graduate at the end of the year?" James asked trying to make small talk.

Jessie shrugged as if she could care less.

"I want to be an actress."

"Then you should be one. I've seen you in the school plays and you're really good at it."

"Thanks..." Jessie smiled. "But..."

"But what?"

"My father dead set against me becoming one. He says it's not a real job."

"Oh," James said quietly.

"I don't know why I'm telling you this," Jessie shook herself from her problems realizing she was telling them to a stranger.

"Sometimes it's easier to talk to someone you know that well."

"If I wanted to talk about my problems. I would go see a shrink," Jessie retorted. She didn't mean to be rude but she was in a bad mood.

"Sorry," James apologize immediately.

"No need to be sorry. It's not your fault my life sucks," Jessie sighed resting her head on the table. James stay silent he didn't know what to say or how to react to her.

"I kind of know how you feel," he spoke finally.

"I doubt it."

James smiled weakly through a cloud of sadness in his eyes. He said nothing for a few moments, leaving Jessie to wonder if she had upset him, not that she cared.

"Hey, Jessie?" James finally spoke again, looking up at her. The sadness was gone.

"Yeah?"

"I think you should go for it. Become an actress and be happy."

Jessie looked at him for a moment, studying the emotion in his eyes. Strangely she found a hint of kindness that confused her. That wasn't what she was expecting to find. She pretended not to notice it as she smiled meekly.

"Well...maybe," She said. "Thanks."

He smiled back, but Jessie ignored it not wanting to fall for his false kindness and end up getting hurt in the future.

My name is Melody Sony and I'm 17. This year I really don't want things to change from how they are right now. I have everything I need. Beautiful friends whom I love, good grades, a great family, and a boyfriend who I love very much. I hope Tracey and I will get closer and closer as the year goes on. I just want this to be a year I'll remember.

"I love you," Tracey Sketchit said softly as he looked into Melody Sony's beautiful brown eyes. He leaned in to kiss her gently on the lips, and she smiled as she kissed him back.

"I love you," She replied.

Tracey put his arms around her as she leaned back against the tall oak tree that they sat under. They have both started dating over the summer.

Melody picked up Tracey’s sketchbook and flipped through his drawings. He loved art, drawing in particular, and after school, he intended to go to art school to begin his career. Tracey glanced up as he saw somebody moving in the distance. His heart began to beat faster as he saw her long light brown hair waving in the breeze. Her light brown eyes turned to face him, desire emanating from her stare. The resentment that filled Tracey’s heart at first glance faded and was replaced with hurt. He forced himself to look away, and turned his attention back to Melody as he heard her speak.

"Oh, I love this one!" she commented as she turned the page to a picture of a meadow they had encountered on a day together in the summer. His drawing was as beautiful as the real thing.

"What a great day that was. So peaceful and calm. I wish we didn’t have to come back to school," She said wistfully.

Tracey glanced back up again. Leaf was gone.

"Me too. Back to the real world though, I guess," Tracey replied, putting his hand over hers. A smile graced her face as she looked up into his eyes.

"Are you scared about it? Year 12, I mean?" She asked. He nodded.

"Deep down, of course. But I know that it’s just another year. The hard part starts after we graduate, and have to make all those life-changing decisions that the teachers will be going on about all year."

"True. But at least you know what you want to do. I don’t have much of an idea."

“Well, I wouldn’t start worrying yet,” he said softly. “I have no doubt you’ll work it out. After all, how could a beautiful girl like you have a problem fitting into any path you decide to take,” he added. Melody smiled graciously.

“Did I mention how much I love you?” She said as she kissed him again.

My name is Tracey Sketchit and my favorite thing in the world is drawing. Next year I'm hoping to get into art school and learn more about art, and hopefully making a career out of it. Last year I was madly in love with a girl named  Leaf Green. She was the person I wanted to spend the rest of my life with until she cheated on me with Gary Oak. I was so angry and hurt when I caught her kiss Gary at a party. I couldn't even look at her for weeks without it hurting. At the beginning of summer break I fell in love with Melody she is such an amazing person. Still, I can't shake these feelings I have for Leaf. Even though I want nothing to do with her after she hurt me.

"So where are you from Selene?" Ash asked as they walked through the school grades. He already pointed out where the classes were located, the cafeteria, and the areas where certain cliques hang out at.

"I'm from Melemele Island not sure if you heard of it. It's one of the beautiful islands in Alola," She replied. Ash was easy to talk to he was relaxed and nice. Through Selene couldn't help but be nervous meeting new people was scary.

"I've heard of that island, but I don't know much about it," He said sheepishly. "Is it nice?"

"Yeah it is beautiful," She said feeling at peace thinking about home. "Very different from here."

"Yeah, city life is different. I spent about four years of my life in Pallet Town, before moving here."

"Wow big difference," She commented. He nodded.

"Those people over there," He continued with the grand tour. "Are the rich, popular people who everyone looks up to even though they treat everyone like dirt."

Selene looked a bit shocked that there was such a segregated group in school. It wasn't like this in Melemele Island.

"The girl with the Burgundy hair is Jessebelle, next to her is Giselle, and the guys are Gary and Butch," He explained.

Selene nodded. The four people he just pointed out were extremely good-looking. They looked like models.

"Anyway don't hurt if they ignore you or say something mean. It's natural for them and they do it to everyone."

The two kept walking, passing students of all ages from ninth to twelve grade. After a few more steps, they reached a grassed area set away from the huge oval. Wooden benches with black wrought iron frames and matching tables were scattered throughout the area, most of them taken up by students eating and reading and gossiping. Finally, they approached a table that Ash stopped in front of. Seated on the chairs were two people.

One had shoulder-length honey blonde hair and light blue eyes. Her fair skin complimented her features and she was slim and tall. As Ash and Selene approached, the girl seemed to look straight at her, almost accusingly, as if she were checking her over for a murder weapon with her eyes. Across from her sat a boy with dark tanned skin and spiky brown hair. He gave Selene a gentle, welcoming smile as she approached.

"Hey guys," He said and they said their hello's, both looking interested to see who this new girl was.

Selene hated being the new girl.

"This is Selene. Principal Spark asked me to show her around," he turned towards her. "Selene, this is Serena and Brock."

"Hey," the girl, Serena, smiled at her, though she still looked suspicious.

'Wonder why?' Serena thought confused.

"Hi May, nice to meet you," the boy, Brock, welcomed. "Have a seat," he patted the spare spot next to him and Selene sat down, as Ash took the spot next to Serena.

"Quick Seren, I need food," He said to Serena impatiently, who sighed as she handed him a bag of chips.

"Seriously Ash breakfast was not that long ago. It is only 7:28 am."

"Anyway," Ash changed the subject. "Selene is from Melemele Island."

"Cool I always wanted to go there for vacation," Serena said and the suspicious look was replaced with a dreamy expression.

"Serena wants to go anywhere that is sunny," Ash explained with a smirk. Serena simply rolled her eyes.

It was pretty obvious to Selene that Ash and Serena were very close. Maybe that's why Serena was looking at Selene as if she was dangerous.

"So Selene, why did you move to Viridian?" Brock asked, genuinely interested.

"My dad is opening up a new restaurant here and he came out to make it happen," She explained.

"Wow, it must be hard starting at a new school now," Serena said.

"It is, I'm really nervous," Selene admitted.

"Well, you've got nothing to worry about," Ash said. "If anyone gives you any trouble, Serena will be happy to teach them to leave you alone," He finished, and got up out of his chair as Serena sneered at him.

"You're just lucky I stand up for you," She sighed.

Brock shook his head at the two. "Ignore them, Selene, they're crazy. Seriously, this is a great school and I don't think you should be worried."

"Thanks." Selene smiled at Brock. He seemed really wise, like he knew more than his age should allow, but right away she knew she could trust him.

At that moment, a chime resounded through the school. It was now time to start heading to the first class of the day.

"So have you guys both got English now?" Serena asked Ash and Brock. "I've got Math with Melody."

Ash nodded with a look of dread.

"Yep," Brock confirmed.

"What about you?" Ash asked Selene.

"Ummm...I think it was English too actually..." She murmured as she rummaged through her school bag, looking for her timetable. When she pulled it out, she confirmed. "Yep, English with Mrs.Yukimura."

"Great, then you'll come with us," Ash said.

The suspicious look was back on Serena's face.

My name is Brock Slate and I'm 17. I'm sort of concerned about this coming year because I don't know how I'm going to balance home and school. My father left my mother, myself, and my 13 brothers and sisters to 'become a better man' last year. Since that day, my mother has been a lifeless wreck, and she can't do much. So, I keep the house clean, look after everything my brothers and sisters need, iron, wash, cook, sew...etcetera. It's tiring to do that as well as school. But I'm the only one who can do it. And I don't have much confidence in my father coming home any time soon. I'm not complaining. I just hope I can hold it all together and be able to graduate. If not...I don't know what I'll do.

James got up to leave as he heard the bell ring, noticing that Jessie was in no hurry to get to her first class. He looked down at her and thought of something.

"Hey Jessie, do you want to have lunch together later?” He asked. Jessie looked up at him in surprise.

"Yeah... I guess."

James smiled his first real smile in quite a while, and nodded. "Great, I’ll see you then. Good luck in your first class."

Jessie nodded. "Thanks. You too." As she watched him walk away, she wondered why someone like James, with everything going for him, would want to spend time with her. She’d never really given him a chance before, believing that he was just like his stuck-up, snobby friends. But there was something about him that interested her. Sure, he was incredibly handsome, but there was something more. Something dark in his bright eyes told her he was more than just a spoiled rich kid. Nonetheless, she would keep her guard up, she wouldn’t trust him because trusting people always resulted in disappointment for Jessie. People always let her down.

Shaking those thoughts out of her head she headed off to class. As way did the rest of the kids who were leaving the cafeteria as well.
