Virgil: How about we go out for a cup of coffee and a walk by the lake this weekend?
That is the text Logan wakes up to in the morning the day after he met Virgil. It's the first thing he sees when he picks his phone up and it makes him smile at the screen as he goes to his calendar just to see that he has nothing planned during the weekend.
He remember that he has planned to meet his mother this Saturday, just to catch up a little while they both has time. But he is completely free on Sunday and spending parts of the day with Virgil seems like a delightful idea.
Logan: That sounds lovely. I'm free on Sunday, does that work for you?
Almost instantly there is a reply.
Virgil: Works perfect.
Virgil: I'll tell you more about the details later!
Logan: Great. See you then.
There is no reply after that so Logan gets up from his bed, throws his phone on his pillow and begins to change from his pj's into his normal clothes. A date on Sunday. With Virgil. The thought made it tingle slightly from nervousness somewhere in his gut, he had never been on a date before. Hopefully he wouldn't be too awkward.
And hopefully Virgil will have some experience with dating and will know what to do. Will there be hand holding? Are they supposed to kiss? What is he supposed to do if he doesn't know what to say?
He glances over at his sleeping friend in the bed on the other side of the room. The only thing he could see of Roman was his messy hair on his pillow, the rest of him was hidden under a Beauty And The Beast duvet. He poked the lump under the covers with his foot until it groaned and woke up.
"Doesn't your first class start at 8:30 today?" There is a muffled 'yes' as a reply.
"Well it's 7:55 so you better get up." Logan knows very well that Roman needs about 10 minutes to wake up and another ten minutes to get to class. Fifteen if they made coffee in the shared dorm kitchen before leaving. Roman crawls out of his bed while complaining loudly and begins to get dressed.
Logan sighs as his friend picks his clothes up from the floor. No matter how many times Logan would tell him Roman would still just throw his clothes on the carpet instead of folding it on a chair or at least put them on the foot of his bed.
"Alright, Mr Punctual, are we getting coffee before class or not?" He said while suffocating a yawn. Logan glared at him at the use of the nickname, he didn't see the point of having a name if people always called him something else? Roman usually called him 'Logic' and other silly names, Logan usually just rolls his eyes at him or gives him a disapproving look but it only seems to make Roman grin happily.
"Yes, we're getting coffee. My first class is English and since my English Professor's still sick we have that annoying substitute teacher who seems to hate me." Logan grabbed his backpack and did his best to press all of his textbooks and notebooks into it. For the billionth time this school semester he thought to himself that he needed to get a bigger backpack so that all of his studying material would fit in it.
"Could it possibly be because you keep correcting her grammar and interrupting her when a fact is incorrect and then proceeding to keep a small lecture about how and why it's not accurate? No, probably not." Roman says sarcastically.
"But she is teaching out things that are inaccurate with inaccurate grammar, I can't just not correct her? If she doesn't want me to, why don't she actually learn the material she is teaching?"
"Let's just go get that coffee." He then says, clearly not wanting to argue about this topic again. According to Roman it doesn't matter that the substitute teacher doesn't know how to teach, no one is listening anyways.
Logan disagrees, he pays just as much attention to the substitute teachers as to his normal professors and teachers. That's why they go to class, to learn. It doesn't matter who is teaching the class, as long as they're teaching out accurate information.
He makes sure to have his keys and wallet in his back pocket before leaving their dorm. He also reminds Roman to remember his keys, something that his dramatic friend forgets now and then and Logan is a bit tired of being interrupted in the middle of class by Roman wanting to borrow his keys when his school day ends before Logan's does.
While they go and get their coffee Logan listens to Roman complaining over having several classes today in which Patton has too. He over-dramatically tells Logan about how he now has several opportunities to do something stupid while Patton might be looking.
"Just talk to him, what is the worst thing that could happen?" He asks, hopeful that today might be the day that he will succeed in convincing Roman to at least attempt to have a conversation with his crush.
"To quote Monica Geller; He could hear me!" Roman exclaims and Logan snorts. "Or what if he replies. What do I do if he talks to me?!" Roman asks, starting to freak out again.
"Well I would imagine that you, too, respond to what he said. That is normally how you hold a conversation, is this news to you?"
"Stop taunting me, this is serious!"
"Okay, I'm sorry." Logan says with a grin and pats Roman on the back to show his support. "But I do not think that you have anything to worry about. You managed to befriend me, and I ignored you for three days because I found you annoying and had no plans of making any friends. And yet here we are, a few years later, very good friends."
"I've heard that Patton is really friendly, so you won't having any problem talking to him. You are really good at talking to people so I am positive that it will turn out well." Roman seems to relax slightly at Logan's words but he still looks nervous.
"Alright, I'll try to talk to him." When he sees Logan smirk at him he just shakes his head. "I said try, I'm not making any promises."
"Great. Now tell me what people usually do on dates, because I have one with Virgil this Sunday."
--
When Logan left the classroom at noon, just having had an English presentation about a book he had read, he was delighted to see that Virgil was leaning against the wall across the corridor. When his eyes landed on Logan Virgil smiled and raised his hand to wave him over.
Logan did notice that some of his classmates looked at him with interested expressions as he made his way over toward his soulmate. They must've been there when Roman screamed about him meeting Virgil yesterday in class. He ignored them and crossed the hallway, shooting Virgil a small smile.
"Hello, how did you know this was my classroom?"
"I went to the nice lady in the school lobby and asked her to see your schedule." He said with a small shrug, brushing away some of his purple hair from his forehead. Virgil was wearing a black hoodie with purple patches, the color matched his hair, the t-shirt underneath was purple too and his pants were black. He looked up, meeting Virgil's eyes which had a warm brown color. He was once again hit with the insight that Virgil was very handsome.
"I can send you a picture of my schedule if you want to." He said and Virgil looked pleased and replied that that would be lovely since they would hopefully be spending time together and that he needed to know when he was free. When he said that Virgil looked down at his feet with a shy smile. Logan was glad that he was not the only one that was nervous.
He was just about to speak again when he was interrupted by Logan's phone ringing. He looked at the display and saw who it was. He better answer. "Sorry, it's my friend Roman. I'll tell him to call back later." He said to Virgil who nodded. Roman sure had bad timing.
"Hello, this is not the best of tim-" Further than that he didn't get, because he was cut off by a loud scream from the other person. He winces at the volume and instinctively held the phone as far away from his ear as possible. Logan strongly believes that he is too young to lose his hearing, it'd be good to not go deaf just yet.
"WE TALKED!" Roman screeched loudly, even Virgil could probably hear him clearly, and began to say something that Logan couldn't make out because he was talking so fast.
"That's great Roman, and speak slower, please. I'll put you on speaker phone so that I can hear you." Logan says and gives Virgil an apologetic look. Roman seems to be very excited over something. Roman giggled nervously.
"Patton, I talked to Patton! And you were right, it went well!" He exclaimed and Logan mumbled a silent 'I told you so', not loud enough for Roman to hear but in the corner of his eye he could see Virgil bite back a smile. "And he's super nice, and somehow even cuter up close!"
"So what did you say to him?"
"Well he said 'Hi! Roman, isn't it?' and I was so shook about the fact that, one, he knows my name! And two, he's mY FREAKING SOULMATE-" Logan had guessed that there would be more screaming and had lowered the sound, but yet they got some strange looks from people walking by. "-so I ran out of the room to not freak out in front of him."
"Wait, you ran out of the classroom?" Logan said, doubt clear in his voice.
"Uhuh, and what did you do when you met Virgil?" Roman mocked and Logan raised his hand in a defending position, even though he was talking over the phone and Roman wouldn't see it. He did not run away from Virgil because of that and Roman knew that very well.
"I ran because I was almost late to class and you know that." He said. He knew very well that Roman would never let him live it down. This exchange of words caused Virgil to chuckle, which Roman of course heard.
"Oh, is that Virgil? Hey Virgil, are you two discussing your date?" Logan could practically hear him smirking. "Logan is sooo nervous-"
"Okay, putting you off speaker phone. And no I'm not..." Logan said, a blush rising on his cheeks and cutting Roman's laughter short by pressing the speaker phone button. Yes, he was nervous about the date, but maybe Virgil didn't need to know that.
"Look, I have two classes left and then I'll get back to the dorm. And then you can tell me everything about you and Patton, ok?"
"Okay, fine, bye."
"Good bye, Roman." He hung up the phone and turned back to Virgil.
"I'm sorry about that. Where were we?" Logan said, making a mental note to tell Roman to please stop embarrassing him in front of his soulmate.
"Well, I was about to suggest that I pick you up at 2pm on Sunday for our date." He said, looking at Logan with a flirty half smirk. "And hey, don't worry, I'm nervous too. I'm just good at hiding it."
"2pm sounds perfect." Logan said, feeling more confident now that he had it confirmed that they were both just as shy.
"Great." Virgil leaned in and kissed his cheek just like he had done the last time. And just like the last time it made Logan blush and he watched Virgil leave with his heart beating quicker than it usually did.
--
When he got back to his and Roman's dorm he found his friend jumping around the room in excitement. He bounced up to Logan with a happy grin and immediately continued his story where he left of before Logan had even taken his backpack off.
"So I left the classroom because you know how nervous I get around Patton-"
"Yes I am aware." Logan had had to spend many months seeing Roman easily flirt with pretty much any stranger or friend but blushing and hiding from Patton every time the boy looked their way.
"-and while I was trying to process the fact that the guy I had had a crush on for ages actually is my soulmate he came after me and asked if he had done something wrong. Then of course I started to ramble something along the lines of 'no of course not, I'm just nervous' but I stuttered a whole lot too, and when I spoke Patton gasped and looked at his wrist and then he smiled brightly at me and I swear my heart almost melted-" Here Roman paused for a little while, hiding his face in his hands and giggling.
"And then he said 'Hi, I think we are soulmates' and I said 'I think so too' and then we sat there and talked. We both agreed that we would rather spend some time together than to go back inside the classroom. Since I'm over 18 it is safe to do so, no one will send my mom a email about it."
"Roman, you did not skip class!" Logan asked in disbelief.
"Logan you are literally the only one in the world who would not skip class when meeting your soulmate."
"And then what happened?" Logan said, ignoring Roman's remark. He was actually intrigued to find out how it had gone.
"Well you were completely right. He is super friendly and he even confessed to having had a crush on me for a while. Not for as long as I have liked him though." He sighed dreamily with an expression of fondness. Logan wondered for a second if he also looked like that while talking about his soulmate.
"This is the happiest I've ever been!" Roman continued happily.
"I'm glad." Logan replied, patting his friend on the shoulder. He wasn't sure what to do, but he was happy for him. He knew exactly how much Roman liked Patton.
"Do you know of any flower shops close by? I want to give him a rose when I see him tomorrow in class." Roman said. He then started to describe all the dates he was going to take Patton on while Logan studied to his maths test while occasionally commenting on what Roman proposed.
--
Looking inside through the coffee shop window Logan could see that his mother was already there, waiting fro him. With a smile on his face he hurried inside. They had a special relationship, he and his mom. She was his mother and one of his best friends. Some people might think that it's sad to have your own mother as a good friend, Logan disagrees.
It was very nice to be close to your mother. He never had to be worried over telling her something and despite him currently living at his college they still found the time to call each other at least once a week. It was rare that they met since his school was quite far away from where they actually lived. He went back home on all holidays though.
It was just him and his mom. He was an only child, not even having any half siblings and his father had died when he was very little. Many of his relatives lived across the country so he didn't see them very often either.
His mom waved when she spotted Logan and stood up and hugged him tightly. "Hello, I've missed you." She mumbled and Logan felt a wave of love. His family might be small, but at least he is very loved.
"I called you last Monday," He mumbled, "...but I missed you too mom." He said and hugged her back.
"So, any big news since the last time we saw each other?" She asked as she let him go and they sat down. Logan looked down at the table and at the cup of coffee that already stood in front of him. From the smell he could tell that it was his favorite, his mother really knew him well.
"Yes, actually..." He supposed he had to tell her about Virgil. He didn't doubt for a second that his mum would love that he had met his soulmate, yet the thought of telling her still made him a bit nervous.
"I have quite the news." He rolled up his sleeve so that the blue words on his wrist were visible and held his arm so that his mother could see. He should start wearing short sleeved, every time he saw the blue words written on his arm it made him smile and think of the pretty boy with purple hair that turned out to be his soulmate.
"Oh my! How did you two meet?" His mother gasps, a happy smile on her lips as she looked back up at her son. His mother had always told him that he had to tell her every detail about his soulmate when he met him.
"Oh I ran into him. Literally, I ran right into him while running to class." Logan looked down at his hands that are holding his cup of coffee and smiled at the, slightly embarrassing, memory. His mother didn't even blink at the fact that Logan had said 'he'. He then proceeded to tell her the whole story of how he had met Virgil.
"What is he like?" She asked with a smirk. He was sure she was already thinking of adding another plate to the table at their Christmas dinners.
"He seems really nice. And he's pretty." He continued as he took a sip of his hot drink. Virgil sure was very pleasing to look at. He should probably tell him how handsome he is.
"He better be, only the best for my son." His mum says, making Logan chuckle. "So when am I meeting him?"
"Calm down mum, we're only going on our first date tomorrow. And that will be the third time I see him. We have been texting a lot for the past few days though." He smiles softly. He's nervous, but he is also really eager to get to meet Virgil again.
"I know, I'm just trying to mess with you. So how is school going?" She said with a laugh and stirred her drink with a small spoon.
"It is going well. I have not been late to a single class, I have gotten good grades on all the tests I've had and I finish my homework and assignments well in time. I did well on the maths test I had last Thursday." (Imagine living like that)
"Okay, but more importantly; are we going to order something else than coffee? I saw that they had vanilla muffins." She asked and Logan let out a small laugh. But yes, those vanilla muffins were really good. Roman had made him taste it the first time they had been here.
--
Virgil's heartbeats quicken as he stands outside his soulmates door. He has taken two showers today, one this morning when he had woken up at 7am because of nerves and one before getting dressed because he was worried that he might be smelling of sweat. He had even tried to style his hair a little and he had made sure that his clothes were actually clean.
In this moment he was incredibly glad over his ability to hide his anxiety. He wanted to appear casual and calm in front of Logan. He wanted to ...impress him, if that was possible. Even if they had only met twice, for a rather short amount of time too, and had been texting for a few days Virgil was already very fond of him.
He had always been so anxious over the possibility of not meeting his soulmate. Of course he knew he had one, the words on his wrist confirmed that. But there was always a possibility that you never met your soulmate, the world is big after all, and your soulmate could die before you met them or maybe you didn't realize that you had spoken with your soulmate and missed who it was.
It was safe to say that he had been very relieved when he heard the words he had been looking out for since he had learned what a soulmate was. And then he had almost had an anxiety attack when Logan had left in such a hurry.
His brain had already went over all possible reasons to why he would never see this stranger again and practically gone through the seven stages of grief before he realized that the tie wearing stranger had forgotten one of his textbooks.
And now here he was, knocking on Logan's door to take him out on a date. It was safe to say that Virgil had many butterflies in his stomach. The door was opened fairly quickly and Virgil realized that Logan had probably been prepared to open it.
"Hey." He said, the metaphorical butterflies multiplying the moment he laid his eyes on his soulmate. Logan somehow looked even more handsome than he had the other two times Virgil had seen him.
"Hello Virgil." He said, sounding excited.
"Have him home before 7, I don't want to have to make dinner." Roman said, getting up from his bed and throwing what looked like an English textbook on his night stand.
"Roman you are fully capable of cooking a meal yourself. Despite, just order a pizza or something if you're too lazy to make your own food." Logan huffed, giving his friend a look.
"Alright." Roman said with a wide grin and walks up to them where they are standing just outside of Logan and Roman's dorm room.
"Now go get some!" Roman shouted, patting his friend's back and closed the door behind them before Logan had the time to yell something back. Instead he just shook his head. Virgil and Logan were both glad that they were the only ones there, except for them the corridor was empty.
"He enjoys embarrassing me." Logan said with a sigh. "But he is a good friend."
"So, were are we going to get that cup of coffee?" Logan continued, glancing at Virgil.
"So, it's kind off cliché, but... I thought we could go get something to drink by the Starbucks. It's close to the lake so then our coffee won't get cold before we get there. I find it very beautiful down there at this time of the year so I thought it would be a nice place to go to." Virgil explains. He does realize that he is rambling and internally begs to every god he can remember that he won't be too awkward today.
It didn't take them long to get to the Starbucks since Virgil had a car. A very old car, but he kept it clean so it at least didn't look too horrible. He was actually very fond of the car despite it not being that good. It was the first thing he had bought with money he had earned all by himself, the first thing that was really his, and his only.
While waiting in line to order their coffee they discussed tv shows and Virgil found out that Logan is a huge Doctor Who nerd. After that they spent a while debating which doctor/companion relation was the best. It was nice to have someone to talk to about tv shows, he didn't know anyone else that liked Doctor Who, so it was a nice discovery that they both liked the same show.
The topic of tv shows lasted the short walk to the lake too, and they started to aimlessly walk along the path that followed around the lake. Somehow the conversation just continued by itself, which was a big relief for Virgil because he had worried a lot about the possibility of awkward silences. But it was incredibly easy to keep a conversation going with Logan.
"My mum was thrilled about you." Logan eventually says, with a small laugh before taking a sip from his drink. Virgil did not remember what drink he had chosen, but it was coffee of some sort.
"You spoke to your mum about me?" Virgil asks nervously. He didn't know why he was surprised, of course you tell your parents when you meet your soulmate. He guess he just hadn't thought about it because he didn't have anyone to tell that he had met Logan.
"Yeah, you don't mind, do you? I talk to her about everything." Logan replied, glancing shyly at Virgil. Now that did surprise him. Talk about everything? He himself hadn't spoken to his mother or father since he was 13 years old.
"No, it's okay. And do you really?"
"Yeah. We are really close."
"Wow, that sounds nice. I doubt my mum wants to hear about you," Virgil smiles bitterly, "she isn't very fond of my attraction towards men. Then again she wasn't very fond of me before she knew of that either so..." Hen fell quiet, maybe this was not the best time to talk about the bad parts of his past. It'd be quite an achievement if he managed to scare Logan away on their first date.
"I'm sorry abut that." Logan says, looking like he's not really sure what else to say. Virgil only shrugs and smiles at Logan, a much more genuine smile this time.
"Lets not dwell more over my depressing childhood and what issues it has brought me, that's more of a fifth date kind of conversation and I'm sure there is something more interesting to talk about."
"Yes that is understandable, I suppose first dates usually focus on all of our positive attributes." Logan paused for a second, then continuing. "Not that I would know though, this is all new to me. I am very nervous, but you have probably already noticed that."
"Well don't worry, I am just as nervous as you are. I'm pretty sure I can actually hear my own heartbeat." He said, still with a smile on his face. Virgil realized that he tended to smile a lot recently, at least when he looked at Logan.
The sun shone brightly and there were few clouds in the sky. It was finally warm enough to not wear a jacket outside. Flowers were growing in the grass and all of the trees and bushes had small and bright green leaves. Late April is a wonderful part of the year. It feels like summer except that it's not too hot yet. He can wear his hoodie without suffering and drowning in his own sweat.
"You look very handsome today." Logan remarked, making a warm feeling spread from Virgil's chest. If he had dared to he would have kissed him right then and there. Even if they were soulmates and destined to end up together he still didn't want to take things too fast.
"So do you." Virgil replies instead. Then he reached out and took Logan's hand after a minute or two of contemplating if he could possibly screw this up by holding hands. His need to hold his hand won over his anxiety and he entwined their fingers, gently but firmly holding Logan's hand in his. Logan immediately blushed and smiled. It was adorable how much he blushed.
"I am positive that as soon as you call yourself my boyfriend my mum will find an excuse to come for a visit just so that she can meet you." Logan begins. By the way that Logan is looking at Virgil he knows that Logan can see that he feels anxious over that.
"She will love you though." Logan continues. His words causes Virgil to laugh.
"I hope so." Truth be told his bad experiences with his own mother has made him very anxious around parents. But he is sure she's lovely, someone who has raised Logan must be.
Despite the weather being wonderful there were no other people anywhere close, Virgil had expected to walk past others that were out with their families or walking their dogs. He preferred it this way though, he liked that they had an undisturbed date and could hold hands without the fear of disapproving glares from people walking by.
They came to a part where the path took them down closer to the lakeside, there was grainy sand covering the ground, making it a tiny beach. He knew it was a popular place to go swimming in the summer, many parents brought their small kids there and teenagers dared each other to swim far out where there was seaweed touching your legs.
Virgil had only swam out that far once. The seaweed kind of snaked around your legs and Virgil had almost panicked. Luckily he had not had a panic attack out in the water (if he had it probably would not have ended well). It was a few years ago but he was still anxious to swim in unknown water.
He sat down on the sand, pulling Logan down with him and didn't let go of his hand. Hopefully he wouldn't find loads of sand in his pockets later. Sand gets everywhere though, he doesn't doubt that he will somehow find sand in his textbooks after this, despite them being nowhere near the beach.
He drew shapes and small drawings in the sand, using his fingers. He was very aware of the fact that Logan was observing him and started to ramble about how lovely the weather was and that the sand was heated up from the sun.
--
Before Logan had never really thought much about how it would be to have a soulmate and spend time with them. He had never imagined going on a date (much to Roman's horror when his friend once asked him what kind of dates he hoped to go on with his soulmate and he did not have an answer) and such things.
But as he glanced at the boy who turned out to be his soulmate, who was currently drawing in the sand with his fingers he couldn't help but to imagine what their other dates would be like.
He knew that they didn't know each other that well yet but when the universe had decided that they would be soulmates it knew what it was doing. He was, as Roman would put it, 'falling and falling hard' for Virgil. There was just something about him that made Logan feel like everything was wonderful. He guessed that was what it was like when you attained romantic feelings for someone.
The date had so far been one of the more pleasant things he had done in a very long time. They had walked around almost the whole lake (not that it was a big lake) which had taken two hours or maybe more. They hadn't even noticed the time passing, them both being completely engulfed in their conversation about school, tv shows, their home life, favorite kinds of ice cream and many more things.
Though Virgil seemed reluctant to talk about his past, so when the subject swayed that way he is careful to not pressure him in any way. From what Virgil has willingly told him he can deduce that he was most likely neglected as a child. The thought makes his heart ache.
Despite only knowing of Virgil's existence for barely a week he feels like he has known him all his life. Like Virgil was the last puzzle piece in the picture of his every day life.
It was silly and highly illogical, he knew that, yet that was how he felt. His mother had shared similar stories of when she and his dad had met and it was only now he began to believe that it was indeed possible to fall in love so quick. Maybe that was how soulmates worked.
Suddenly Virgil's voice pulled him out of his thoughts and he blinked. He had been so lost in thought that he hadn't noticed that Virgil had said something. "Sorry, what did you say?"
"What were you thinking about? You looked so... I don't know, happy."
"You." It slipped out before he realized it but the way it made Virgil smile definitely convinced him to say things like that more often. "I am having a really good time with you." He continued and Virgil gave his hand a little squeeze, then lifting it up and pressing his lips to the back of his hand.
"I'm having a good time with you too." He leaned in a bit, nudging Logan lightly with his shoulder. He did not really lean back again, he stayed close to Logan and looked him right in his eyes. The eye contact made Logan shiver and he was fairly certain that Virgil noticed it, because a pretty smirk appeared on his face.
Virgil reached his other hand out and cupped Logan's cheek. He glanced down on Logan's lips quickly, but still noticeably, before looking into his eyes again. They both leaned in, their faces mere inches apart and Logan was very aware of what was about to happen, and he did not mind one bit.
"May I?" The words were quiet and spoken softly, still easy to hear in the peaceful quiet around them. Logan could only nod, not trusting his voice at the moment, and then he could feel Virgil's lips against his. His eyes fluttered close and he leaned into the kiss, feeling a pleasant tingle run through him.
Then it's over, the warm lips pressed against his disappearing and instead they leaned their foreheads together. They were sitting as close as they could, the sun shining down on them not responsible for the heat they could feel. They were still holding hands and Virgil was still cupping his cheek, now and then pressing short kisses to Logan's lips, making him smile.
And, hell, Logan has never been more sure that this is the start of something incredibly beautiful. They might still not know each other very well, but he was already sure that the universe knew very well what it was doing when deciding that Virgil would be his soulmate.

Okay but storytime: tomorrow (5th June 2018) I have to give my ipad back to school (we do all our school work on ipads) and fuckity, I usually write fanfics on my ipad but now I'm gonna have to go back to writing on my phone I'm gonna miss writing on my ipad. The screen is bigger and I make fewer misspellings.
But luckily my mom has a tablet she hasn't used for ...like 7 years, and I can write on that one!
