"L, this is awesome, thank you!" Virgil looked up from the large box he was holding, grinning at his husband who was sitting next to him on his couch, watching him open his birthday present.
"Yeah?" Logan said and Virgil wasn't sure why Logan could possibly need reassurance when the gift had been perfect, but he was happy to give it.
"Yeah!" Virgil said, removing all of the wrapping paper from the big box of lego.
"You wanna help me build it? I'm definitely not waiting until later." Virgil said, completely unable to hide his excitement at all.
"I'd be happy to." Logan said, giving him an undeniably fond look.
He hadn't thought anyone would actually buy him this lego set, he hadn't even put it on his wish list, it was that expensive. He supposed Logan must have remembered when he had found it, because he remembered telling Logan about it with amazement.
Honestly, it wasn't every day you found out that there was a one meter tall lego set of a functioning wind turbine. (And he had also found out you could build a working lego typewriter, and a working lego grandfather clock, and other things that Virgil had never considered could be made out of lego.)
"I can't believe you got me this." He said, looking up at Logan again after having spent a while staring at the box of lego with disbelief and amazement.
"Yes, it was very expensive, but I saw how impressed you were by it and since lego is a hobby you greatly enjoy, how could I not? However, considering the price this is the only gift you're getting today." Logan said and Virgil laughed, that kind of laughter that felt all light in your chest.
"This gift is enough for, like, so many birthdays and christmases." He said, looking down at the box again, his fingers beginning to carefully open it. Logan took the discarded starry wrapping paper, folding it up, maybe to be used again later.
"Do you think we could build all of this today?" Virgil wondered, pulling out crinkling bags of lego and lining them up where there was space on their cluttered living room table.
"I'm not sure, but we do have the entire day to try." Logan said, picking up a few books and dvd's from the table before placing them down again.
"We might as well build this in the office, there's more space there." Virgil said and Logan nodded.
"Just what I was about to suggest." Logan said and they carried the lego and two pillows (to sit or kneel on) into the room that Logan used to teach from home and that Virgil used to build all his lego stuff.
They seated themselves on the floor with the lego, Virgil pulling out the instructions and opening the bags with the lego pieces they were starting with. He placed the instructions between himself and Logan, letting his husband find and piece together the first two pieces.
Logan glanced up at him, catching Virgil watching him with a wide smile.
Virgil had been building lego sets for years, it was a hobby he had started as a teen as it helped his anxiety to have something like that to focus on, plus it was fun. Though while Logan had always actively supported his hobby he had never actually helped Virgil build something, he hadn't asked nor seemed that interested, but Virgil definitely wanted to share this with his husband.
"Alright, you find the piece for step two and I will find the pieces for step three." Virgil said, already carefully pouring out another bag of legos and picking out the ones they would need. They sat together, building for almost an hour, listening to a podcast that the two of them often enjoyed together.
When the podcast episode ended Virgil didn't bother finding another, instead watching Logan struggle to put a piece in the right place.
"L, why are you holding it upside down?" Virgil wondered after a few seconds of watching Logan who was staring at the lego they had pieced together so far with a pretty lost look on his face.
"I'm trying to figure out where to fit this piece but no matter how I turn it it doesn't look like in the picture." He said, sounding frustrated and gesturing towards the page of the instructions that he was looking at. Virgil blinked a few times, then looked between the build they had so far and the pictures in the instructions.
"Baby, love, starshine, light of my life, we're not even on this page yet." Virgil finally said, flipping three pages back in the instructions. Logan gave the now displayed page an utterly disappointed look.
Then he looked at the lego piece in his hand again, carefully placing it on what he thought was the right place, then looking up at Virgil for confirmation. Virgil shook his head a little, unable to help a little smile when Logan scrunched his nose in offense as he turned back to the lego.
"Try there." Virgil said, turning the three decimeter tall foot of the wind turbine and the lego hill it was standing on slightly and pointing to where the piece should be. Logan did as he was shown, then looked between the picture in the instructions and the lego piece he had just placed.
"Ah." He said, and once their eyes met again Virgil couldn't help but to burst into giggles which he muffled with the sleeve of his hoodie.
"Do not laugh at me." Logan said, although the corner of his mouth was twitching just slightly, clearly trying not to smile.
"I'm sorry, L." He said, still grinning, which Logan solved by leaning in and kissing him, effectively distracting him from grinning at Logan's struggles in only two seconds.
Then they went back to placing every other piece, talking about things such as what Virgil wanted for dinner (it was his birthday, after all), and talking about the tv show they were currently watching together, and having a slight competition to come up with the most meals they could make during the coming week.
"Here, look," Virgil said, pushing the instructions closer to Logan and pointing towards the next steps, "if we build this part first then we can just add it to the top and do the last bit."
"I see." Logan said, although Virgil wasn't sure he did, going from Logan's earlier attempts at understanding the instructions properly. Then when reaching for the next pieces he accidentally hit their lego build, making it wobble dangerously and he quickly reached out to still it, giving Virgil a stressed glance.
"I thought you said building with lego is relaxing." Logan stated, carefully letting go of the almost six decimeter tall wind turbine shaft and grabbing the bit of lego that he had been reaching for.
"Yeah, because usually it is." Virgil said, grinning when Logan glanced up at him with a pout. Honestly, Virgil had even been the one to do the 'tricky' bit with the tiny lego cables that were later going to connect to the motorized blades
"This is a lot more difficult than I thought it would be." Logan complained, and to be honest, while Logan was incredibly smart he had always struggled with instructions, so Virgil wasn't overly surprised that this was difficult for him. Though he was still going to tease him slightly by suggesting that he got new glasses, although that was partly because he knew it was actually about time Logan got a new pair of glasses.
"You know, it's fine if you want to do something else, I won't mind." Virgil suggested, not wanting Logan to feel like he had to indulge in his interest or anything. He was perfectly happy sitting and playing with legos alone for hours, he had done that plenty of times before.
Logan turned towards him, reaching out to cup Virgil's face in his hands and looking him right in his eyes, speaking very softly.
"I am having fun and I am enjoying building this with you. And, I am not going to let a lego set suggested for twelve year olds defeat me." He said, making Virgil have to try very hard not to laugh.
He placed a hand on top of one of Logan's, angling his head slightly to the side to press a kiss to Logan's thumb, a gesture that made Logan's expression turn considerably softer. He entwined their fingers and they soon continued building, though still holding hands.
"That's the wrong piece." Virgil pointed out, picking up the correct one and handing it to Logan who looked mildly annoyed.
"In my defense I never had any lego growing up." Logan said and Virgil paused looking for pieces to stare at him for a long while.
"What?" Logan said, noticing Virgil's eyes on him.
"What the fuck?" Virgil exclaimed, because that was not information he had known about his husband before.
"...It's not that strange. I was simply more interested in other things." Logan said with a shrug.
"Yeah but still, how can you not have had any lego growing up? No wonder you don't know what you're doing."
"Excuse me, I fully know what I'm doing. I am merely making errors to assure that you are paying attention to what is going on, obviously." Logan said with a tone of faked indignation that made Virgil snort.
"You know what, building legos with you is making it a lot more fun than it would be otherwise." Virgil said, having to admit that Logan was certainly bringing a comedic aspect to legos that Virgil hadn't experienced before.
Virgil took over building for a while as Logan pondered over the instructions and watched what Virgil was doing as he built the last bit of the shaft and then attached the motorized blades. During the last bit of building Logan mostly squeezed Virgil's hand that he was still holding, playing with his fingers and kissing his knuckles which, honestly, distracted Virgil enough to make an error or two, too busy internally fawning over how cute Logan was.
"Here, the last piece is yours." Virgil said, offering Logan the last bit of lego and Logan placed it carefully. They looked at their creation for a while, both of them probably amazed that they were finally done.
Virgil then let Logan turn it on and they stared at it with anticipation as the blades began to turn, spinning round and round. Then their eyes met and they grinned at each other, both equally proud of what they had built and unafraid of showing off their childish glee.
"We did it." Virgil said, affectionately nudging Logan who was looking pretty proud (as he should).
"We did." He agreed.
"It was more difficult than I had anticipated that it would be, but it was fun, maybe I will help out more often, if you want me to." Logan offered and Virgil didn't bother fighting a wide smile, knowing Logan wouldn't have said that if he hadn't meant it and genuinely wanted to spend more time building legos with him.
"I'd love that. It's nice to share this with you." Virgil said, leaning against Logan and pressing his lips to his cheek.
They got up from the floor, taking another moment to watch the finished, functioning, product of their work. Eventually they would move it onto the table in the corner of the room where Virgil's previously completed lego sets were displayed on the mentioned table and a couple of shelves, though for now they just wanted to admire it.
Though Logan did somehow get his tie stuck in the motorized blades of the wind turbine when he leaned close to look at something, which had Virgil doubled over wheezing and laughing so hard that he could barely turn the wind turbine off and help Logan untangle his tie.
It took his husband a while to find the incident as funny as Virgil did.
