Warnings: mentions of homophobia, logan is sad

Logan had been lying awake for a long while now, not even near falling asleep. His husband, who was lying really close to him and making it hard to move without bothering him, Logan thought had fallen asleep a little while ago, but he wasn't entirely sure.
If he had fallen asleep then Logan didn't want to take the chance of walking him up, but he also did not want to stay in bed, or in this room really. Actually, Logan wished he was back home in their own house, sleeping in their bed, having spent the Christmas day just the two of them.
But after his parents had called and asked if he wanted to come home for Christmas, and bring his husband with him, Logan had eventually decided to accept. He hadn't seen much of his family for the past three years, not after deciding to come out to them all by inviting them to his and Virgil's wedding. Logan had really hoped this invitation meant that his family was ready to fully accept him, but they clearlt weren't yet at the point that Logan had wished they would be.
But he and Virgil had survived christmas day and now they were both in Logan's old room (he was slightly surprised his parents had left it be and not done something else with the room after he moved out) lying in his old bed since the drive back home was too long to do tonight.
The highlights of the day had been meeting his older sister again, they actually got along well and she had always supported him but they rarely met since they lived far away, having sort of moved in opposite directions when moving out. She had been one of the few of his relatives to come to his wedding (others included two cousins, his aunt and her husband, and one uncle).
Logan pushed the covers off of himself, trying to get out of bed without moving too much or making any sounds, pulling a warm blanket from a chair in his room and wrapping it around himself. He wanted a bit of fresh air.
"Lo?"
Logan turned around to see Virgil sitting up, suffocating a yawn. "Where are you going?"
"Oh, V, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake you. I am just going to get a bit of fresh air." He said, watching Virgil leave bed and walk up to him.
"You didn't, I was still awake. And I'm coming with you." Virgil's hand slid into his, their fingers entwining. Logan knew there was no use in arguing against it, plus Virgil's company would always make him feel better.
Quietly and without saying anything else they both made their way down the stairs and to the back door (it was unlocked, luckily), hopefully no one was awake and wondering what they were up to. Logan closed the door behind them and they sat down together on the floor of the porch. Logan held the blanket open and pulled it around them both once Virgil had scooted closer.
The grass in the garden was frosty and now and then the clouds parted and let the moon shine down on the world, their exhales turned into mist. Despite all the negative and conflicting emotions that Logan was feeling being back here he supposed it was nice to be somewhere far from the bigger city where he and Virgil had their apartment.
"You good?" Virgil asked, breaking the silence and Logan had to take a moment to articulate his thoughts.
"...I'm disappointed, I guess," Logan said, trailing off and sighing, "I had hoped things would be different. I'd expected that when we were invited here that meant my parents were ready to accept me."
"I genuinely don't think they realize the way they act is upsetting, which I am unsure if it makes matters better or worse." He continued, letting his frustration and bitterness finally get to him. He hadn't thought his parents could make him feel any more let down after they'd decided not to come to his and Virgil's wedding, but he'd been wrong.
Virgil put an arm around him and took his hand, Logan leaned his head on his husbands shoulder. The blanket he had brought didn't keep the cold out for very long, but Virgil's warmth was a comfort.
It was insane to him, that his parents could think the love he and Virgil shared was less important just because they were both men.
He'd grown up surrounded by those opinions and spent many years thinking he would never fall in love, because falling for boys had not been an option. Then he'd met Virgil shortly after moving out and no one had made him feel more loved than that anxious and awkward man had, and still did, and how could that possibly be damnable?
"At least they invited us here, and that probably means they miss you and want to fix their relationship with you, even if they don't know how to." Virgil said with a small shrug, for once looking for the positives.
"But you don't have to stand this, though. You've got no ...obligation or anything to hang around while they take their sweet time to learn what kind of behaviour is okay and what's not." Virgil said, kissing the top of Logan's head.
He knew that what Virgil was saying was true, and he definitely wasn't accepting any invites by his parents any time soon, not until they got used enough to him being gay that they didn't act weird about it. (Though it'd already been three years, Logan didn't have that much hope.)
"I feel like this trip was a waste. We might as well have stayed home, saved ourself the trouble. I'm sorry for dragging you here." Logan stared out into the garden. It looked practically the same as it had the last time he'd been there. Time had not changed this place much.
"And I'm sorry your parents don't see your happiness as more important than their prejustice." Virgil said, honding him just that litle bit tighter.
"Though, I did get to see the room of teenage Logan so the trip wasn't entirely wasted. And it was the first time I got to meet your parents. I mean, it would have been nicer if they weren't so bad at hiding how uncomfortable our relationship made them but... still. You haven't seen them in so long and them inviting not only you but us both here is a big step away from them basically dropping all contact with you." Virgil pointed out, and that was indeed true.
Not enough, but an improvement none the less.
"I suppose everything about the trip hasn't been negative. But only us two celebrating Christmas together is pleasant and now this years' Christmas has been wasted." Having spent their three last Christmases together they were beginning to create their own traditions, same thing when it came to other holidays and birthdays and such things. It was the kind of domestic that Logan six years ago never thought he would have. He had never been so happy about being wrong.
"Only pleasant? I need to up my game then." Virgil said with a scoff and Logan looked over at him with a small smile.
"Every day spent with you is wondrous." He said, correcting himself.
"Sap." Virgil leaned in the little distance between them, gently kissing Logan, fingertips tracing his jawline.
Logan missed their apartment, there they could kiss whenever and Logan would not feel like anyone was judging. He had been careful the whole day not to seem too affectionate, which was stupid. Virgil was his husband and he really should not let his parents' silent disapproval stop him but, even though it should be the other way around, Logan wished his parents would reassure him that he was forgiven.
Logically he knew he'd done nothing wrong, but when growing up his parents had always been so proud of him and he guessed that had stuck with him. But the life he had with Virgil and their friends back home, that was worth disappointing his parents.
"It's cold, let's go get some sleep." Virgil mumbled, standing up and helping Logan up too. The blanket fell off from their shoulders and Virgil picked it up. Logan shivered when a cold breeze swept by, rustling the few dead leaves left in the trees, and by now Logan regretted going outside bare feet.
It only took them a minute to get back to Logan's old room and cuddle together under the covers. Logan couldn't wait to be back home tomorrow, in their apartment where Logan had built his new life with Virgil. And with that thought and Virgil's arms around him he found that it was easier to fall asleep this time.
