Summary: roman and patton visits. virgil and logan ends up having something to think about

Warnings: briefest mention of Logan's dad not having been the best, bit of insecurity

--

Virgil had just taken a shower and gotten dressed, clothes taken from a drawer with suspiciously neatly folded clothes. Then he'd checked what his husband was up to, concluding that he wasn't being very entertaining at the moment.

Logan was off in the kitchen, wiping the cabinet doors (which, for the record, were already clean) in the wait of their friends coming over.

Logan had the tendency to start cleaning and organizing when he got nervous, bored, or stressed. Virgil wasn't sure which of those were the cause this time, but the books in their bookshelves had been rearranged from alphabetically to color coded, and all the clothes in Virgil's drawers had been folded. Even his underwear.

Virgil supposed this was part of the deal when marrying Logan, all those years ago. Not that Virgil minded, even if it took him more than five minutes each time he wanted to find a certain book, he would never ever have the patience to fold his own clothes and was slightly glad Logan sometimes took the time to do it for him.

Virgil left his spot on their couch and tiptoed into the kitchen, sneaking up behind Logan and wrapping his arms around his middle. Logan didn't even flinch.

"Lo, hun, those cupboard doors have never been cleaner. Despite, I'm sure they'll be here any moment so put that rag and the cleaning fluid away." He said, kissing Logan's jaw and then taking a step back. He didn't have to face Logan to know that he'd just rolled his eyes at him, but just a second later their doorbell rang.

"Told you so." Virgil said with a grin and Logan put the stuff away in the cupboard under the sink, then following Virgil to the door.

They opened the door and were met by their two best friends, Roman and Patton, and carried in Patton's arms, their newly adopted son.

"Aw, well aren't you three adorable." Virgil said. Many greetings were exchanged and Virgil held the door up for their friends to enter, then closing it as Roman and Patton took their shoes off.

Roman turned to Logan, who was staring at the two month old as if he'd never seen a baby up close before. Virgil gave Patton a careful hug, only putting one arm around him and not stepping too close since he still had the baby in his arms. The little one was dressed in a lion onesie in infant size and was looking incredibly cute.

"Never seen a baby before, or what, Logan?" Roman said with a laugh and gave him a hug.

"Want to hold him?" He then asked, and Logan's eyes widened.

"Me? Oh, no, I don't know how-" Logan began, taking a step back and holding his hands up.

"Nonsense! Patton, let Logan hold him." Roman said, patting Logan's shoulder reassuringly. Logan looked close to mortified as Patton walked up to him.

"See how I hold my arms? Just copy this, yes, exactly like that," Patton said, placing their son in Logan's arms, "right, so he's lying on your arm, and the other one you use to keep him in place and to support his head better. Perfect."

They all made their way into the living room, Logan walking very slowly and still looking slightly terrified as he followed them all. Virgil gave him a few amused glances. Logan had always been slightly... at a loss with children.

Logan sat down between Virgil and Patton on the couch, still looking nervous about being the one to be holding the baby, but no longer as if his heart had stopped.

"Admittedly, he is adorable." Logan said. Virgil leaned closer to him, seeing how their friends son was looking up at Logan with big eyes and half opened mouth, making it look like he was very surprised to see Logan.

Virgil grinned at the two of them, reaching a hand out and poking the baby's tiny hand. "He's so cute."

"Just you two wait, you'll get the opportunity to babysit loads." Roman said with a wide grin and a wink. Virgil let out a nervous chuckle and exchanged a quick glance with Logan. He didn't know how good of a choice they were for babysitting. They didn't exactly have the experience one might want their babysitters to have.

Virgil decided to change the subject.

"I know you guys have only had him for a week, but based of all the baby name research you two did I'd say it's a justified question. Have you two decided on a name yet?" Virgil asked.

He knew the two of them had made lists of favorite names ever since they'd gotten approved for adopting. They had many, many suggestions. Patton had insisted on showing Virgil his lists of favorite names for boys, girls, and gender neutral names. Apparently Roman had his own lists of names too, and they had also made lists of names that they agreed on too.

"Well, we've sort of almost decided. ...We have at least narrowed it down to a list of top ten." Roman explained.

"Roman's being difficult. All my suggestions are great." Patton pouted.

"My suggestions are great too." Roman said, giving Patton a small nudge and pressing a kiss to his cheek. Patton's pout was exchanged into a smile and he turned to Roman, them sharing a kiss that made Virgil look away.

"So, what has the first two weeks of parenting been like?" Logan asked.

"Tiring and terrifying." Patton said, leaning his head on Roman's shoulder. In the corner of his eyes Virgil saw how Roman nodded slowly. Virgil was sure he'd think so too, if he was a parent.

"Really?" Logan looked up at the two of them, finally tearing his eyes from the baby. Virgil did the same, but only for a moment. Then he looked back down at the baby who was happily drooling while staring back at him.

"Yes, indeed. But somehow all worth it." Roman said. Virgil glanced up again, seeing the two of them with their heads leaned together, both looking at their son with awe in their eyes.

"Neither of us have slept much since the little guy wakes up all the time, and if he makes the smallest of sounds it wakes me. I'm always terrified of something happening to him. And he screams so loud when he's displeased." Patton said, suffocating a yawn.

"Yeah, me too." Roman said, leaning a bit forward to look at his son again.

"But, I love him so much. It's been two weeks and I'd already kill for him, he's got me wrapped around his tiny, tiny, baby finger." Roman cooed, sighing deeply with the softest of smiles on his face.

"Yeah... You'll understand once you two adopt." Patton said, getting up from the couch and kneeling on the floor in front of Logan, allowing his son to grab his finger.

"Right." Virgil said, not having anything else to say. Logan hummed, not saying anything. Though Virgil wasn't sure he'd actually heard him. Logan had the tendency to not really hear what people said when focused, and right now he didn't seem to be thinking about anything else than the fact that he was holding a baby.

"Do you want to hold him too, Virgil?" Patton asked. Virgil stared at him, then down at the baby again. He hadn't held a baby since he was about eight and his cousin had been born. He could not turn the offer down though.

"Um, o- okay." He said, sitting up straight and copying how Patton told him to hold once the baby was placed in his arms. He didn't remember his heart beating this hard when he last held a baby. Virgil was very glad he was sitting down, because if he was standing then he would be absolutely horrified of the thought of dropping the infant.

But now, as he was sitting down and fairly sure his arms wouldn't fail him at this moment, he felt his pulse calm and realized it was kind of nice to hold the baby.

"It's time for him to eat soon, or he'll become cranky." Patton said, tickling his sons stomach. Virgil wasn't sure if babies a few days past two months were ticklish, or if they smiled as a reaction to situations they were happy in (did babies feel happy?), but whatever the reason the little one opened his mouth in something that looked like a smile, and he stuck his tongue out as far as he could, drooling a little bit extra.

Virgil didn't understand how anyone could be cute while drooling, but he supposed babies were the exception. And Logan, perhaps. Virgil always found Logan cute, even while he was being gross, or sick.

"Can I prepare the baby formula in your kitchen?" Roman asked, already on his way out in the hallway, coming back with the backpack they'd brought with them.

"Of course." Virgil said, watching as Roman rummaged through it and pull out a package most likely containing baby formula and parts to a baby bottle than he began putting together. Then he walked towards the kitchen and Virgil heard the tap being turned on.

He turned his attention back to the baby, seeing how Patton had allowed him to grab at his hand.

"They don't do much at this age, huh?" He said. His knowledge about infants was minimal, but he suspected that at two months babies didn't do much else than sleep, eat, and scream.

"Well, not really. But that's probably good, gives us a while to get used to being parents before he learns to crawl and starts trying to eat everything within his reach." Patton said, leaning down and pressing a kiss to his son's cheek.

"It's going to be a nightmare. Babies will choke on anything." Patton mumbled worridly and they were all silent for a little while, listening to the sounds Roman was making in the kitchen, until Patton spoke up again.

"What do you guys think, is he a Michael? Or maybe Sam, Sammy? Theo?" Patton sighed, tilting his head and pouting at his son.

"It's such a big deal, naming someone. That's the name they're going to be stuck with for the rest of their life, if he doesn't decide to change it." Patton sighed, not seeming to mind that his son was currently attempting to chew on his thumb.

Then Roman came back into the room, watching them all for a moment before rejoining them by the couch.

"He's not a Michael." Patton said to him and shook his head. Roman handed him the baby bottle.

"That's what I've been saying." He said, sitting down next to Logan. He leaned back, hands behind his head and he closed his eyes, looking really comfortable and ready to nap.

"Here you go, Virgil." Patton said and handed the bottle to him, wiping his other hand free from baby drool on his shirt. Virgil took it dumbly, wondering if it would be silly of him to ask how to feed a baby. But Patton seemed to sense what he was thinking about.

"Oh, it's easy, just stick the nipple of the bottle in his mouth. All you need to do is hold it there." Patton said, standing back up as Virgil did what he was told.

"Did you know babies eat every two or three hours?" He continued. Virgil shook his head.

"I've got to say, I really miss sleeping through the entire night." Patton mumbled, giving his son such a soft look that Virgil suspected Patton thought being woken up every two to three hours was very worth it.

Virgil had no experience with parenting in any way, not even pets, but he knew for how long Patton and Roman had wanted to adopt, and he knew how happy they had been when they got the news that they were going to become fathers.

They'd actually all been out eating at their favorite burger place when Patton had gotten the call that a woman they had met through the adoption center and talked to had chosen them for the adoption of the child she was going to give birth to in four or so months.

Patton had cried, a lot. Roman had stared down at his plate in shock for several minutes before the both of them had turned to the other and started happily laughing and screaming 'we're going to be fathers'.

Then of course they'd panicked and rushed off to buy baby stuff, dragging Logan and Virgil with them. And now, after four months of frantically reading through all the baby books they'd gotten after deciding to adopt, and taking classes on how to take care of an infant, buying toys, baby formula, toddler sized pillows and covers, loads and loads of baby clothes, they finally had the child they'd dreamed of for the past years.

Virgil didn't doubt Roman and Patton would be the most amazing parents ever. This kid was lucky.

"Look, why don't you two just take your list of names you two agree on and try a new one out on him every day. If you spend a whole day calling him one name instead of just staring at him and trying to vision him as someone with that name them maybe it'll be easier to decide if you think the name fits or not." Logan said. Roman stared at him.

"You know," Roman finally said, pointing at Logan, "that's smart. That's really smart. I should've thought of that. I blame sleep deprivation."

"Oh, then if we start tomorrow his name will be Misha for a day." Patton said, who (to no ones surprise) seemed to have their list of names memorized. Virgil shook his head.

"You two are such nerds." He said, ignoring the fact that as the Supernatural nerd he was himself he couldn't blame them nor judge them.

"Hey, Pat, I think he's done eating?" Virgil said. The bottle was half empty, but the baby kept trying to turn his head away and spit the bottle top out.

"Aw, already? Don't want the rest? Alright then." Patton said, using that soft voice that everyone used when speaking to babies and pets.

Patton pulled out a handtowel from the backpack, throwing it over his shoulder and then carefully taking his son from Virgil's arms.

"I need to burp him." Patton said, answering the confused look Virgil had given him. "And I need the towel because babies spit up a lot. More than you'd think. Well, at least this one does. The baby books I've read said it depends on the baby."

Patton held the infant carefully against his chest and shoulder, patting his back.

"You two really are dads now, huh?" Virgil said with a grin.

"Yeah, we really are." Patton said, laughing in disbelief. "I can't fully believe it, but then I just look at him and realize that he's really ours, he's our son. And I'm so happy."

"Oh, oops. Roman, could you grab a paper towel? Our darling son just spit up some baby formula and at least half of it landed on our friends floor." Patton said, casting Virgil and Logan an apologetic glance before turning to Roman.

"Oh, and he's asleep..." Patton said, sighing but smiling. Virgil looked at Roman, who was indeed fast asleep, hands behind his head as he was sat sank into the couch cushions.

"Well, I can't blame him." Patton said softly, giving his husband a fond glance.

"I'll wipe it up." Logan offered, standing up.

"We've got napkins, paper towels, and wet wipes in the backpack." Patton said, pointing. Virgil watched as Logan managed to find a paper towel and wiped it up. He threw the crumpled up paper towel onto the coffee table, then sat down between Virgil and the sleeping Roman.

Patton placed his son back in Virgil's arms, trying to wipe his mouth, which he apparently severely disliked because he let out a surprisingly loud yell in dissatisfaction, startling Roman awake again. Virgil was slightly surprised someone so small could be so loud.

"I'm here, darling, I'm awake." He mumbled groggily, stumbling up from where he'd been sat, rubbing his eyes. Patton laughed at him, stepping closer and kissing his nose.

"Everything's under control, sleepyhead." He said and Roman groaned, sitting back down heavily. Virgil, who was holding the still very loud baby, was unsure if everything was indeed under control.

"That nap did not do me well." Roman complained. "How do I even wake up feeling more tired than before I fell asleep?"

"Well, actually, one possible reason is because us humans have what is referred to as sleepcycles, which each is ninety minutes long, and preferably we should wake up right where one ends, because then we wake up feeling more well rested. So waking up in the middle of one-"

"Logan. I haven't had a full nights sleep in over two weeks, please don't try explaining anything to me." He said, running a hand through his hair and making himself look even more exhausted.

"Another day then." Logan said.

"Yeah, another day." Roman echoed, looking unsure if he wanted that day to happen.

"Can I hold my son now?" Roman said, making grabby hands, cooing at his son as soon as Patton had moved him into Roman's arms.

"You're the most beautiful little boy in the world, and me and dada are the luckiest dads in the world." He murmured to the still crying baby, then turning his attention to Patton.

"Could you get his pacifier? Then if we're lucky he will calm down and fall asleep. Plus his teddy?" He said, Patton immediately locating the items in the backpack.

"He's probably tired. And a bit stressed by all the handing around and the two new faces." Patton said, putting the pacifier in his sons mouth, effectively shutting him up. Virgil's ears were thankful.

He looked at Patton and Roman and their son. A small family. Virgil was very happy for them. Patton and Roman really deserved this. God knows for how long they'd wanted to have children.

--

Virgil curled up next to Logan on the couch, legs folded up and head resting on Logan's shoulder. It was a common occurrence that they ended up sitting like this during the evenings, maybe solving a crossword puzzle together, or watching a documentary, or a comedy show on Netflix, or talking, or reading a book each, or simply sitting together while doing nothing.

Tonight Logan was doing the crossword puzzle that was in the newspaper, and Virgil watched. He could join in if he wanted to, but he didn't feel like it this evening. He'd rather sit silently and watch.

Virgil was actually a bit busy thinking ever since Patton and Roman and their son had left. It had never been something Logan and him had talked about, having kids one day. Roman and Patton had looked so happy.

Exhausted, but happy.

Virgil had no idea what kind of dads he and Logan would be. Logan wasn't always very patient, but he was kind and understanding when it mattered. Virgil was sure Logan would be a good father, even though he suspected Logan might not agree. Especially as he was a bit nervous around children.

But himself? Virgil wasn't sure if he could be a father. It'd mean having responsibility over a child. Virgil didn't think he was always that good taking care of himself, and the thought of another human being relying on him for survival was definitely a bit scary.

"It was lovely seeing Roman and Patton today. And their small one of course." Virgil said, beginning to feel he was running out of creative ways to describe the baby when it had no name.

"Yes, it certainly was. Their son was so... tiny. I tend to forget we've all been that size." Logan said.

"No way I was ever that small." Virgil mumbled, making Logan laugh.

"I've seen your baby pictures you were both small and adorable." He said and smiled. Virgil scoffed.

"Oh, shut up." He said and pushed on Logan's arm, making him draw a line across the crossword.

"But, seriously now, Lo. Patton and Roman kind of made me think." Virgil said, Logan responding with a hum and he put his crossword down to indicate that he was really listening. Logan turned his head to look at him, waiting for him to continue.

"Well, it just made we realize that we have never really talked about the possibility of us having kids one day." Virgil continued, sitting up on his knees, turned towards Logan. This felt like the sort of conversation to have face to face.

"Oh. Yes, you're right. We never really have spoken about it, have we?" He said, pushing his glasses up with the pencil still in his hand. Virgil looked up at him, maybe feeling more nervous than he should.

"Do you? Want kids, I mean." Virgil asked, keeping his eyes on Logan even if he was terribly nervous. Not that he really had a reason to be nervous. But he was unsure what he wanted Logan's response to be, and he wasn't sure he himself could've answered that question.

"I... I don't know, Virgil. I haven't thought much about it. Um, how about you, do you want kids?" Logan said, tilting his head adorably, doing that thing where he furrowed his brows and bit his lip slightly when thinking.

Absolutely adorable.

"Maybe? I mean, I haven't thought about it a lot either. I guess it's kind of a nice idea though, us one day adopting. But it's also a really scary thought." Virgil said wish a small laugh. Logan smiled, sort of sheepishly.

"It is. I don't know the first thing about children, especially not babies. I didn't have any siblings either, as you know, so I've never babysat or anything." Logan threw the newspaper and his pencil to the coffee table (the pencil of course rolling across it and falling to the floor, probably to never be seen again).

"God, what if I'd be like my dad? He always yelled at me, no matter what I did." Logan said with a grimace.

"I'm sure you wouldn't. You're much sweeter and more understanding than you think. I promise you that." Virgil said, placing his hands on Logan's thighs to support himself as he leaned in and pressed a small kiss to Logan's nose.

Logan laughed, leaning back and scrunching his nose. "No, I'm not."

"Yeah you are. You're a sweetie, Logan. I'm going to start calling you sweetie." Virgil said, leaning in and pressing a quick kiss to Logan's lips.

"If you ...must. Just don't be so teasing about it." He said, giving Virgil a disapproving look when he smiled innocently at him.

"Sure thing, sweetie." Virgil said, chuckling when Logan rolled his eyes.

"Okay, but... do you think you could see us ever adopting? Being fathers?" Virgil asked quietly, carefully, still leaned in close. Logan placed his hands on top of Virgil's.

"Yes, I can." Logan said, almost sounding surprised.

"Though, I don't think I'd be ready to take care of a child too soon." Logan said, a small shrug.

"Oh, no, me neither. Give it a year or two, at least." Virgil said, sinking back against the backrest, head back on Logan's shoulder.

"Kids are expensive. And loud. And when you have a child then it's time to say goodbye to such things as alone time, privacy, a consistent sex life, getting enough sleep... Plus all that responsibility. Need to be responsible to take care of another human." Virgil said, perhaps letting his worries speak. He was definitely not ready to become a parent just yet, but he saw no harm in talking about the possibility.

"Yes..." Logan said slowly, staring at nothing, deep in thought.

"Then again, getting approved to become adoptive parents always takes a long time, and it's not for sure you get to adopt very soon either. It could take years, I mean, it took Roman and Patton two years to adopt after deciding to, and they were lucky. Does that mean we should be sending applications in and talking to the people at the adoption center already?" Logan rambled, looking slightly wide eyed. Virgil agreed, there was a lot to think about and consider.

"Maybe we should talk more about this tomorrow, I'm getting the feeling this conversation can go on for a while." Virgil said, glancing down at Logan watch which said it was nearing ten in the evening.

"Agreed. Let us watch something, or go to bed."

"Hm... One or a few episodes of One Day At A Time, and then bed?" He suggested, Logan nodding and already turning the tv on.

"Excellent choice." Logan leaned back, throwing an arm around Virgil's shoulders and holding him closer as Netflix turned on.

Them being parents one day, it was a quite nice thought actually. They'd both agree on that.
