Virgil opened his back door to find a slightly out of breath Logan standing there, he sent him a grateful smile and gestured for him to come inside.
Virgil was sure his parents would not be too happy to find Virgil sneaking a friend into the house at this time, and neither would they be overjoyed to find that Virgil was still awake, but luckily for him it was unbearably hot this summer and his parents had decided on sleeping in the guestroom in the basement.
The chance that they would be heard were low, and Virgil really needed to talk to Logan. Now. Before he could decide against it.
"What was so urgent that you needed me to come over at one in the morning?" Logan whispered as he followed Virgil up the stairs to his room, them both skipping over the steps they'd learnt made sounds.
Virgil sat down on his own bed while Logan did as he always did and dragged Virgil's desk chair across the room, sitting down facing Virgil.
"Okay, so... You know how there is this person that I like a lot?" Virgil said, nervously clasping his hands together and letting them rest in his lap. Logan snorted.
"Yes, you won't stop talking about him. About how pretty his eyes are and how cute he is when he rambles." Logan said, the slightest tone of annoyance detectable. Virgil thought that was fair, Logan was really his only close friend and, well, he'd needed to gush about his crush to someone.
Even if that someone was actually the same that person he was crushing on. Virgil had not thought that fact was necessary for Logan to know. Not until now, perhaps.
"Yeah... well, I've decided that I'm finally going to stop being a coward, and I'm going to ask him out." Virgil said. Logan only stared at him for a moment before blinking, looking unsure if he'd heard right or not.
"Okay." Logan said, seemingly struggling to find anything else to say. Virgil wished Logan would've looked a little bit more disappointed, even if he didn't want Logan to feel that way he still would've felt calmer with his plan if Logan would've shown any jealousy at the thought of Virgil asking out someone else.
"Do you really need my help with that?" He continued, almost sounding like he was pleading. Virgil couldn't blame him, after all he wouldn't have wanted to help Logan ask some guy out. Then again Logan might not feel about Virgil the way Virgil feels about him, Logan might just, as always, be a bit uncomfortable with emotional things.
"Sorry, I really do." Virgil mumbled. He unclasped his hands, instead pulling at his hoodie strings, needing something to do with his hands to get rid of excess worry. It did not help much.
"Well then, how can I help?" Logan seemed slightly hesitant, but it made Virgil extremely grateful that Logan was still taking time helping him out, even when he'd rather not or was unsure how to help.
"Okay so... you know I'm heads over heels for this guy," Virgil cringed slightly at his own choice of words, he didn't want to seem too smitten, even if he was, "I just really, really don't want to mess this up."
"Of course not." Logan said, letting out a small sigh but giving Virgil a nod that told him to go ahead. Virgil smiled at him, even managing to get Logan to send him a tiny one back.
"So, I was just wondering, uh, if you were being asked out, how would you want to be asked? I figured that I'll have a better chance for success if I don't make a fool of myself." Virgil let out a laugh that sounded far too nervous, but Logan didn't seem to find that nor the question very weird.
"Should you not be asking him these things?" Logan asked, head leaning in his hand. Virgil had to use most of his self restraint not to respond with something dumb, like 'I am' or 'what do you think I'm doing'.
"Just answer the question. Please." Virgil added that last bit perhaps a bit later than he was supposed to, but Logan rolled his eyes at him and that could not mean he was seriously annoyed with him. Just mildly wishing that he wasn't having this discussion, perhaps.
"I suppose it would depend on what kind of person they are. What are his interests?" Logan asked.
"He likes stargazing, should I take him stargazing?" Virgil asked helplessly. It was an idea he'd toyed with for a while, even attempted to bring Logan stargazing only to never actually tell him that he liked him and instead spending the evening listening to Logan speak about the stars.
"I like stargazing." Logan said with arms crossed over his chest, Virgil was almost surprised he wasn't pouting too. He looked unfairly cute. "I mean... it sounds like a good idea."
"Hang on, you've still not answered my question. How would you like someone to ask you out?" Virgil said. Logan shrugged weakly.
"This is unnecessary." Logan said, but quickly continued. "I suppose... I'd just want the person to ask me. No grand gestures, no way to misunderstand the situation. Just a simple question that can be responded to with a simple yes or no."
Virgil's heart felt as if it was attempting to escape his chest, how hard it was beating, but Virgil was not going to chicken out now. He'd spent months talking himself into asking Logan out, it was now or never. Virgil could not stand Logan not knowing. And Virgil could not stand not knowing if Logan felt the same or not.
"Okay, Logan. Thank you." He took a deep breath, looking straight at Logan who had only shrugged again as if saying it was nothing to thank for. He rearranged the words in his head, building a sentence that felt both impossible to say and impossible to leave unsaid.
"Logan, would you like to go out with me? On a date." He forced out, immediately deeming it as a bad sign that Logan simply frowned and nodded almost sadly. Virgil was on the brink of throwing himself into a pit of overthinking when Logan spoke.
"Yes, just say that. I am sure that will work just fine." He said, leaving Virgil to stare at him as he pieced everything together. For the first time since getting to know Logan Virgil thought he might just be the slowest and most clueless person he knew.
"What? No. Logan-" Virgil laughed, he couldn't help it, but he shut himself up quickly when Logan gave him a look that told Virgil he didn't find the laughter very nice. Virgil put his hand over Logan's where it was resting on his knee, and he leaned in a bit closer.
"Logan, listen closely this time. Would you like to go out on a date with me? Us two, together. Stargazing, perhaps?" He said, watching as Logan's eyes widened as he now realized what Virgil had asked, as he realized what it meant, what everything meant.
"Me?" He asked as if he still wasn't sure he'd really heard what Virgil had been saying. Virgil let his fingers entwine with Logan's and Logan didn't pull his hand back but his face was dusted with pink.
"Well, who else would it be, really?" Virgil wondered. Virgil honestly could not think of any other person who he could fall like this for.
"I just- I figured it was that annoying guy, Roman Prince, or that other one who is sweet but energetic, Patton Heart." Logan said, flustering a deeper shade of pink when Virgil scoffed and shook his head.
"That's ridiculous. You know they're dating, right?" Virgil said. Based of the blank stare Logan sent him it was clear that this was the first he'd heard of that. His cluelessness would've been cute if it hadn't been so funny. He shook his head but didn't say anything, waiting for Logan to find his voice again.
"You think my eyes are pretty?" Logan said quietly, referring to the many, many times Virgil had said so. Virgil, who'd already gotten slightly lost in Logan's eyes now that he was looking at Virgil, immediately averting his eyes.
"Of course I do." Virgil mumbled, refraining from shaking his head at Logan. He'd admit he had been slightly surprised that Logan hadn't realized it was him Virgil had been speaking about. Sometimes he hadn't been too subtle, and yet Logan seemed like he couldn't be more surprised.
"So, are you going to answer my question?" Virgil said, a little louder to maybe wake Logan up from the shock he was in. Maybe he was impatient, but it'd kill him if he needed to wait a minute longer to know if Logan did or did not want to accompany him on a date.
"Is that even needed? Of course it's a yes. I've... liked you for a long time." It seemed Logan was embarrassed to admit that, and he avoided looking at Virgil, who was almost grinning.
"Really? Alright, great!" Virgil said, maybe speaking a bit louder than he should at this time of the night, no matter where in the house his parents were sleeping. He continued, but a lot lower.
"Would you, maybe, like to go stargazing with me? Now, if that would be all right. Otherwise any other night when the sky is clear works fine too. But I was just thinking that since the sky is clear tonight, and it's the weekend tomorrow..." Virgil trailed off slowly, biting his lip when realizing he'd started rambling.
"I did notice on my way over to here how wonderful the weather was and how clearly you could see the stars." Logan said, the faintest of smiles visible. That was a yes.
Virgil stood up, dragging Logan up with him and he tried to hide his smile as they made their way out of the house and towards the nearest spot where the stars were the easiest to be seen.
