The doorbell rang. Logan could easily hear it from his room upstairs. He could also hear someone else's steps going down the stairs, and therefore he didn't bother to even get up from his bed. Instead he kept working on his math homework while simultaneously trying to listen if whoever had rang on the door were saying anything.
He did hear his mother say 'he's upstairs', so most likely it was someone here to see him. It could only really be one person, and Logan smiled to himself while shutting his math textbook shut. The homework could be done later, it wasn't due for another week anyway.
He heard quick steps up the stairs and then his door was opened and a slightly out of breath Virgil appeared. He hadn't knocked or anything but they were years past knocking on each others door before entering.
"Hey, you free?" Virgil asked. He was wearing that one hoodie that he'd had for years. It was old and once it has ripped, resulting in Virgil fixing it by sowing a purple patch over the rip. Then he'd thought it looked cool and he and Logan had spent a day designing and fixing the hoodie to make it look like Virgil had wanted it to look.
"Yes, I am." Logan said, reaching a hand out towards him. Virgil took it and pulled Logan up from his bed, smirking at him as they ended up standing really close together. Then he took a step back and let go of his hand.
"Great. Come with me." Virgil said, already having turned around and left his room before Logan had as much as stopped thinking of how nice it'd be to kiss Virgil.
He hurried after Virgil, barely having the time to put on his shoes and tell his parents they were going outside. Virgil was patiently waiting outside as Logan closed the front door behind himself. Then Virgil kept walking and Logan guessed he'd just have to follow him.
The moment the two of them got out of sight from Logan's house Virgil's hand found his. Logan looked down at their entwined fingers, sending a glance at Virgil and smiling at him. Virgil was looking at his phone but Logan still saw a faint smile that surely was because of him.
"So, where are we going?" Logan questioned, already knowing Virgil wouldn't give him a complete answer but still attempting to ask.
"You'll see." Was all Virgil said on that matter. They walked in silence for a few minutes and Logan first now realized what nice weather they were having. He mostly noticed it because the sun shone right in his eyes and he had to squint not to go blind.
"Your parents still don't know?" Virgil asked, breaking the silence. Logan sighed and shook his head.
"I was really close to telling them yesterday but I chickened out." Logan said. He felt a bit ridiculous to say that, but it was true. Lately he'd felt that he should come out to his parents. He was seventeen and had known he was gay since he was about twelve, and he had had a boyfriend for almost three years.
"You don't have to tell them, remember that. Only do it if you're ready." Virgil said.
"I know, I just feel as if it's stupid that I don't dare to. You've been out for years." Logan said.
"Yeah, but that's because when I was like eleven I told my parents that I wanted to marry this guy I saw on tv. They were the ones who taught me what 'gay' even meant. I didn't really leave much for their imagination." Virgil said with a laugh. Logan knew that, and he found it a bit unfair that his parents hadn't ever expressed an opinion on the lgbt+ community, because he really had no idea what kind of reaction to expect when coming out.
"We're here!" Virgil said, slowing down by a store Logan hadn't seen before and smiling brightly as he turned to Logan. This must be a newly opened store since Logan had not seen it open before. Last time he'd walked by this store it had been empty.
"What ice cream do you want?" Making Logan really look at it, seeing that it was an ice cream shop that seemed to have an impressive amount of ice cream flavors.
"Oh, well... I did not bring any mo-" Logan began, internally scolding himself for leaving his wallet at home, but Virgil interrupted him, shaking his head.
"My treat." Virgil said, quickly squeezing Logan's hand.
"You don't need to-" Logan tried, not finishing this sentence either before Virgil interrupted him.
"Damn it, Logan. Would you let me try to be a gentleman? I'm the one taking you out on a date, let me pay, nerd." Virgil said, rolling his eyes fondly, Logan suspected he was one of the few who got eyerolls that weren't always out of annoyance from Virgil. Date. Logan hadn't really considered this to be a date. He'd just assumed they were hanging out. Well, he certainly had no complaints.
"A date?" Logan said, turning to Virgil with a quirked eyebrow and a smile he hadn't been able to keep forced down.
"Well, yeah, kind of? I mean, I'm taking you out for ice cream so I'd say it's like a date, right? Also this is like our billionth date, so stop looking at me like that." Virgil said, and Logan could not help but to smile even wider at the blush on Virgil's face.
Virgil dragged him into the store and they spent a good ten minutes marvelling over how many different kinds of ice cream flavors this store had. It was definitely hard to choose, but Logan managed to decide before Virgil even told him to hurry up.
"This place is great. I need to try, like... all the flavors." Virgil mumbled as the two of them walked up to the counter to order.
"I think we will need to come here many times before having tried every flavor." Logan said pointedly, nodding towards the sign above their heads that read over one hundred different kinds of flavors of ice cream.
There was only two other people in line before them and therefore it was their turn quite quickly. They told the person behind the register what they wanted and Logan watched as they put scoops of ice cream into cones as Virgil paid.
Logan made a mental note to take Virgil out sometime soon, he didn't like others paying for him, plus, he would like to return the favor. Logan had actually planned on going stargazing with Virgil again, he just had to find a night where it didn't matter if they lost sleep.
Virgil looked at Logan's ice cream as they exited the shop, clearly judging him by the look on his face.
"What kind of person eats a scoop of banana peanut butter ice cream with a scoop of blueberry cheesecake ice cream and mango ice cream?" Virgil said in his best mockingly horrified tone of voice.
"Your boyfriend, apparently." He said, licking his ice cream that had already began to melt in the sun. Virgil grimaced.
"You're lucky I love you." He said, playfully nudging Logan.
"Yes, I am. I love you too." Logan said, hearing Virgil scoff at him.
"Sap, eat your ice cream and be quiet." Virgil said with a grin. Logan stuck his tongue out at Virgil who attempted to give Logan a look of what Logan thought was supposed to be annoyance. It failed because Virgil was still smiling at him, which just made him look very fond of Logan.
They linked arms and walked up to the bench outside of the store, then both immediately changing their minds as it looked like someone had spilled something all over it. Instead they ended up standing in the shadow from another building, hoping that that would make their ice cream melt slower.
There was barely any people out, not even here where all the stores were. There were some cars parked by the parking lot, so a few people must be in the stores. He could see two kids climbing a tree with an annoyed parent standing beneath. This wasn't a very big town they lived in and most people must be spending this sunny day elsewhere.
"Hey, Lo. What are you thinking about?" Virgil said, making Logan look up from having stared at his ice cream for a minute. He shrugged. A lot of thoughts had gone through his mind.
"Just that the weather is nice, there aren't a lot of people around, and you look good in the sunshine." Logan said. He might have added that last part just to make Virgil blush, though it was still the truth, and it worked.
"Are you saying I don't look good when I'm not standing in the sunshine?" Virgil said with a grin, shaking his head despite the pink dusted on his cheeks. "How rude."
"Oh, shut up." Logan said with a roll of his eyes. His boyfriend knew very well that Logan always found him cute, even at times other people probably didn't.
"Make me." Virgil said with a smirk.
"You know you can just ask me to kiss you?" Logan said. Virgil huffed and scrunched his face.
"Where's the fun in that?" He said and put an arm around Logan's shoulders. "Now, are you going to kiss me or not?"
Logan placed a hand on Virgil's cheek and leaned in, pressing their mouths together in a slow kiss.
They parted and Logan smiled at Virgil, not caring that he probably looked like what Virgil referred to as 'heart eyes'. Then again Virgil was giving Logan such a soft smile that he had to look away before he said something extremely sappy.
And that was the exact moment Logan's gaze fixed on someone familiar.
He locked eyes with who Logan a second later realized was his mother, who had a quite surprised expression on her face, that Logan could see even if she was standing quite a bit away by the entrance to the local grocery store. Logan turned around quickly, dragging Virgil with him around the nearest corner.
"Lo, hey, what are you doing?" Virgil asked, almost stumbling as he tried his best to follow Logan without dropping his ice cream. Logan stood frozen pressed against the wall, trying to rearrange his thoughts.
"My mom. Oh god. I hadn't expected anyone I know to be around. Now she knows we're together, she saw us kiss. Oh, she knows I'm not straight." Logan muttered, peeking around the corner, not seeing her any longer. Had she gone home? Was she shopping for groceries? That was the most likely reason as to my his mother had been there at all, Logan did recall her saying something about needing to buy more tea and cookies.
"Logan, calm down, please." Virgil said, putting a hand on Logan's shoulder and making him turn back around to him.
"Walk with me?" Virgil said, holding his hand out for Logan to take if he felt like it. Logan knew taking a walk was something Virgil did when his own anxiety acted up, he was probably trying to help Logan feeling less panicked. He gave Virgil a small nod and they continued down the street that they found themselves on. Logan found that it was quite an effective way of calming down, especially as Virgil put an arm around him as they walked there, finishing their ice creams.
"Did you take any paper towels?" Logan asked, remembering he'd seen a stack of them by the counter in the ice cream shop. It would be useful to have as Logan had some ice cream on his hand after it having melted and dripped down from the cone. Virgil wordlessly handed him one from his pocket and Logan wiped it away.
They were pretty much walking around aimlessly. It didn't really matter where they would end up, they'd easily find their way back home. Logan and Virgil had both grown up in this town and together they'd explored as far as they dared together since they were old enough for their parents to let them leave the back garden without adult company.
Soon they saw a playground where they had played a lot as kids. Not having anything better to do the both of them walked across the sandbox, towards the swings.
Logan sat down on a swing, remembering how he and Virgil had jumped from them when they were about ten years old, they'd had a competition to see who could jump the furthest. Virgil had ended up winning, but he had also scraped his knees in the gravel since he'd landed wrong. Logan still counted that as a win for himself because at least he had not ended up bleeding anywhere.
Virgil stood in front of him instead of sitting down he too, and Logan looked up at him. He tilted his head a little instead of verbally asking what Virgil was doing, and in return he received a shrug.
"How are you feeling? Still on the verge of freaking out?" Virgil wondered, grabbing Logan's shoulders and pushing him, making the swing move. Logan quickly grabbed a hold of the chains of the swing, not having been prepared for any movement.
"I'm good. I think. As long as I've got you by my side I will be alright." Logan said, not caring if it was sappy. It was the truth, why not say it? Virgil smiled at him. Not his usual teasing smirk or anything like that, just a soft, genuine smile.
"Good, because I'm not leaving. Good luck ever getting rid of me." Virgil said in a very cheerful tone of voice that made Logan involuntarily smile. If Logan didn't know it would've only encouraged Virgil to start being sappy he'd have told him to stop being so cute.
"I can't tell if it is a good or bad sign that I have no messages from mom." Logan said, checking his phone, making sure that his data is on.
"Perhaps she's waiting until you get home to discuss it. It's better to have a conversation about this face to face, I suppose. Maybe we should be getting back soon, just in case your parents are worrying." Virgil said, and Logan did see where Virgil's concern came from, but that did not change the fact that he didn't at all want to go home.
"I don't want to go home yet. That would involve finding out if my mom have told my dad about what she saw and if they even support me." Logan said while doing his best not to sound either afraid or whiney.
"I know, but you can't just never go home. Besides, I'm certain they love and accept you." Virgil said, squeezing Logan's hand. "I'll go with you if that'd make you feel safer."
"Please do." Logan said, letting the question 'but what if they don't' die on his tongue. He knew his parents loved him, they made sure he knew that. And yet... Logan had heard too many coming out stories that went wrong to completely trust that his parents would have his back no matter what.
"You did plan on coming out soon." Virgil said, and while that was true it wasn't making this situation any less unpleasant.
"Yes. But that doesn't mean I was really ready to come out." Logan mumbled, staring down at the gravel under his feet. If Logan would've had the choice he probably wouldn't have actually come out any time soon. He just hadn't felt ready, even if he had no reason to believe his parents wouldn't still love him.
"I know." Virgil said, a hand cupping Logan's cheek, making him look up at him. Logan pouted at him, half because he simply felt like it and half because it was a silly thing to do and it'd make Virgil worry less if he was being silly.
"Would it be alright if I kissed you?" Virgil asked. Logan didn't bother telling him he didn't need to ask, Virgil didn't seem to be listening to that anyway. Instead he gave Virgil a small nod, making him lean down and softly kiss Logan, instantly making him feel better about the whole situation. He might be anxious, but he had Virgil with him.
They parted and Virgil straightened himself up again and Logan loved to see the tiny smile on Virgil's lips. Virgil's smile always had the ability to make Logan feel better. Virgil would always smile brightly at him and kiss his cheek if there was something Logan was stressed about, and it always made him feel at least a little bit calmer.
Logan stood up and Virgil immediately pulled him into a hug, wrapping his arms around him and pressing a kiss to his temple.
"Let's get this over with before you have the time to overthink it for too long, it won't do you any good." Virgil said, patting his back.
"Give me a second." Logan said, not letting go of Virgil until a long moment later. Slowly they started to walk as Logan tried not to imagine all the different ways his parents could react.
"Look at it from the bright side, now you don't have to tell them yourself." Virgil said. Logan gave him a glance, knowing Virgil was just trying to cheer him up.
"I suppose that is one way to think." Logan mumbled. After all, it was a huge relief to know that it wasn't up to himself to summon his non existent courage to actually tell his parents of his sexuality. It did make Logan feel as if a weight had been lifted from his shoulders. He would be happier about that if he wasn't feeling anxious.
"Hey, do you think they will have loads of invasive questions about our relationship?" Virgil asked quietly, starting to look a bit worried himself. Logan made a grossed out face.
"God, I hope not. It's none of their business. Not like we do anything inappropriate, but it's embarrassing enough that she's seen me kiss you." Logan said, quickly realizing that might've sounded a bit rude. "That came out a bit wrong. I do love kissing you. Just... without an audience is much preferred."
"Oh, no I get what you mean. I don't want to kiss anyone in front of either of my parents." Virgil said, holding his hands up in front of him in a gesture of distaste.
They walked in silence for a moment, until Virgil asked him what homework they had. Logan answered his questions despite knowing Virgil already knew what they had due and what he was only talking to try and distract Logan from becoming too anxious.
After all, Virgil had started to have all due assignments written down in a note on his phone since Logan had made him realize it made him less stressed to actually be aware of what he had to do.
They reached Logan's house far too fast and Virgil was the one to open the door and drag Logan inside. Logan could tell Virgil was quite worried about how this would go too, it's not like he could hide it, they had known each other since they were toddlers. Logan still thought it was quite cute of Virgil to disregard his own worry in favor of trying to help Logan himself not freak out.
Logan shut the door behind them, looking up and seeing his mother who practically materialized before them. (Or, maybe she had just walked into the room as Logan had turned away, that was by far more likely.)
"Hi." Logan managed. He felt surprisingly awkward holding Virgil's hand while his mom saw it. Logan's mom didn't seem to care about that all all though, she didn't even glance down at their entwined fingers. Instead she just hurried up to Logan and pulled him into a tight hug.
Now, Logan was not sure how to handle this situation. He had not expected this being the first thing to happen as he walked through the door. He had expected questions, that is what he had been mentally preparing himself for.
"I just want you to know that I support you, one hundred percent. And I love you." His mom began, arms tightening around him. Logan could feel Virgil letting go of his hand, and now that he could use both his arms he, only slightly awkwardly, returned the embrace.
"Okay." Logan said, honestly not being able to think of a better response.
"Where's dad? Have you, um, have you told him?" Logan asked, not honestly knowing what answer he would prefer. If she had told him at least he wouldn't have to.
"He's gone to the hardware store, apparently he urgently needed to buy some tool. You know how he's trying to fix the car?" His mom said, still not letting go of Logan. "I haven't told him. I assumed it would be an invasion of your privacy to tell him something I think you didn't want either of us to know."
"Yeah. Thank you." Logan mumbled, unsure if he should be trying to escape the embrace, and if he would even succeed.
"Logan, hun, don't be scared of telling me things. You are of course entitled to your privacy, and you don't have to tell me or your dad anything, but I want you to know I'll always support you. No matter what, okay?" She said, and Logan only nodded because he didn't trust his voice at the moment.
This was going far better than Logan had dared hope for. His mom finally let go of him and Logan awkwardly took a step back, standing next to Virgil again and trying to swallow down the lump in his throat. He was definitely not going to cry, he wouldn't allow himself to do that.
"I hope you don't mind me asking, but for how long have you two been together?" She asked, smiling warmly at them. Logan glanced at Virgil for a moment. They had been together for a long time. There had also been a year of mutual pining before the two of them even got together. His mom probably thought their relationship was something new and Logan hoped she wouldn't be sad to learn for how long Logan had been hiding things from them.
"Two years and eight months." Virgil said, answering for him. Her eyes widened a little at that, but she clearly tried to hide her surprise.
"I really had no idea..." She said, almost sounding ashamed. Logan did think that was good, that she really hadn't known, it meant that he and Virgil actually had managed to act straight during these past years.
"I've known I was gay since I was about twelve." Logan said before his mother had the time to ask. Logan might as well tell her, he was quite sure that she would've eventually asked had he not just said it.
"I'm happy for the two of you. You always look so happy in each others company, ever since you were little kids." She said. Logan shrugged sheepishly.
"We'll be in my room." Logan said, grabbing Virgil's wrist. His mom just smiled and sent them a nod before they walked up the stairs, making sure to shut the door after themselves when in Logan's room.
Virgil fell onto his bed, curling up into a small ball as he always did. That or sit on the floor, apparently either of the two chairs Logan had in his room were not good enough. "That went good, didn't it?"
"Yes. It went better than expected." Logan said, sitting down next to where Virgil was lying. "I'll still have to tell my dad though. Or perhaps if I ask mom she can tell him..."
Logan sighed. This was still complicated. He was halfway there though, which was an improvement.
"Do what makes you feel the best. I know what I want, a nap." Virgil said, sneaking an arm around Logan's middle.
"Virgil, it's two in the afternoon. Why not do some homework instead? You can help me with the poetry homework." Logan said, trying to reach for the school textbooks he had on his nightstand.
"Ugh, fine. But then you'll have to help me with the math." Virgil said. "And after that maybe we can try and think of how to tell your dad about us?"
"Deal."
