twelve ; alligator
The morning is calm, when Wooyoung wakes up. The sun is already shining through the half closed blinds, and he could hear the faint running of a motor somewhere outside, possibly of a car delivering food and other necessities, as it always does on a Friday morning. The base is mostly closed throughout the weekend, as many soldiers leave to see their families, so there are groceries being taken in a day before, just so the chefs won't run out during the two days. It never really bothered Wooyoung, there wasn't a reason for him to worry about something as simple as a lunch or a full breakfast. He's good to go with some leftovers and he's sure the other remaining soldiers feel the same. It's not like they need a royal breakfast, anyways.
The early morning breeze feels chilly against his skin when he stands in line with his squadron, and he mutters a silent curse. He'd woken up sore that morning - his wound was slowly healing where it rested on his abdomen and just from the brief glance he'd spared it that morning when changing his bandages, he could tell there'd be a large, wide scar etched into his skin once it heals fully. It's okay though, he decides, because he likes it there. He thinks of it as a reminder of selflessness and bravery, only because Mingi had convinced him of believing that - and so he does. It was hard at first. Accepting something this big and permanent on your body is really, really hard, and at first, Wooyoung had hated it. He'd hated the thought of having something this ugly on himself, something so large that not a soul could possibly miss it when looking him over, he'd hated the thought of being reminded of the event, also, but when Mingi had told him how 'fucking brave' he was, praised him for being so selfless and thanking him for being as reckless as he was, Wooyoung had changed his mind. Maybe, he could live with it, he thinks as he prepares his sore body for the run.
It's silent when the blond runs. The man feels the healing stitches move with each stride he takes and he hisses and pants because it hurts, but pushes the pain aside. It's only when he's underneath a barbed wire, crawling underneath it with a great struggle, that General Jung snaps, already tensed up and on edge from the way Wooyoung's body had reacted to the earlier lap run. It's as if the Captain was doing this on purpose, the General thinks, as he scolds the man after dragging him from underneath the wire. From the corner of his eye, Wooyoung can see Mingi shooting him an apologetic smile - he'd love to step in and help, have Wooyoung's back like the Captain has his, but the both of them already had some beef started with the higher ranked man that morning, and neither had even as much as dared to blink in his direction. It's quite scary when the man barks out insults and orders, but Wooyoung just simply doesn't care as he listens, a smug grin on his lips and fire behind his eyes. He's exhausted, but who was he to let the General win a fight, when it's obviously not his fault that he can't move properly.
Apparently, his grin is what tips the man over the edge completely, and the General groans. "I am about this close to sending you home for a week, Jeong," and it's a threat. It is a full on threat that most soldiers would take personally to heart and would think of what they've done wrong; they'd be scared about the consequences later, would be terrified of the tone even, but Wooyoung's smile just tugs wider on his lips. Mingi is anxiously biting at his fingernails somewhere behind the duo, eyes narrowed at his friend, and it's comical when he stands out of the crowd like that and looks so much like a child. Wooyoung chuckles, fixes his posture and almost towers over the General, as if he were nothing but a mere fish in the sea, as if he weren't older, nor his Crew Chief.
"See you later, alligator," Wooyoung hums then, and he hears a soldier chuckle when he turns his back to leave, leaving the General standing there, confused and open-mouthed. Wooyoung walks further, however, until he's nearing General Lee's office, the grin still tugging at his lips. He brings up a hand to knock, then he waits for the door to open and he's surprised to have the General stand there so quickly. It's so early to be moving this fast, he thinks, as he makes his way inside the office, trailing behind the older like a lost puppy needing guidance, even if he'd been in the office countless times before.
General Lee only chuckles as they both take a seat, explaining that he'd already heard Wooyoung's smug outburst, and it has the younger look at him confused, aghast even. General Lee was someone nobody would ever want to mess with; not even Wooyoung. His friendly relationship with the man often played into his cards, and he and Mingi had been underneath some kind of a protection thanks to him, even when General Jung wouldn't agree. It's always been like that; General Lee was like their friendly uncle - someone that had watched over them all this time, brought them up and let them shine - he's a man Wooyoung seriously appreciates, and getting on his bad side meant abandoning the relationship they'd built. However, when Wooyoung's gaze finally lifts upon hearing his name, he doesn't see a frown or a scowl; he's met with an amused smile and crescents for eyes. He finds tinted cheeks and a million dollar grin that's all teeth but no bite, and it has the pilot chuckling, too. "I'll never hear the end of that, Wooyoung, he'll cry to me about being called an alligator!" The man playfully scolds, but still laughs at the thought, and Wooyoung must admit - it's funny. "I assume though, that you're here to fill in your departure," Taeyong offers then and slides the stack of papers over to the pilot that looks them over carefully.
"Just a week, though," he mumbles, but still grabs the pen with gentle fingers and fills in the blank form with a neat handwriting. The pilot writes in everything he needs, before he gives the stack back, and he grins toothily at the man again. "There's someone I need to meet," he offers a part of the reason he's leaving, then stands up to bow and take his leave, because this was the only thing necessary for him to be able to pack up and be gone. Taeyong stops him, however, and offers a gentler smile; something that tells Wooyoung that he's good to leave any time he wants or needs and doesn't need to have a proper reason for doing so. It's a silent conversation between them, but Wooyoung still understands, and he bows his head again to offer his salutes.
He stays for lunch. Him and Mingi meet there and discuss the training and past missions they'd taken together, they talk about the weather and even their families for once, when the Captain brings up his departure. The Lieutenant stares for a short minute, mouth hanging slack where he sits, and it has Wooyoung snorting at the sight. It's a mess of frantic 'what's' and wide eyes, a chaos ensuing where Mingi is situated, and it drains a lot of energy off Wooyoung to calm the taller down with a stern 'be fucking quiet, dude.' "It's just for a week, I'll be back, dumbass," and Mingi's heart calms down significantly, as he nods. "I named you the crew Commander for the time being, so don't freak out when Jung tells you," The captain offers then and Mingi nods in understanding, listening intently to whatever else his friend had to say. It wasn't a lot, and when he's done explaining what had happened the night prior and that morning, Mingi understands.
"Say hi to my mom for me, too, please,"
"I will, Gi,"
