Chapter 28
I didn't sleep that night, outlasting even Hitoshi. He had eventually given up on trying to get me to talk, but never left the room. I was just grateful he wasn't pushing anymore.
Once I was sure he was fast asleep, around two in the morning, I quietly left the safety of my blankets. I threw on the first sweatshirt I found, not caring if it was his or mine, and exited my room.
I needed to get out. I had no idea where I was going, but anywhere was better than home. My feet moved without a thought, taking me down the road in a random direction. There was no destination in mind.
I was only paying half attention to my surroundings, just enough to not run face-first into an obstacle. That was how I didn't notice the mountain of a man until he was only a foot in front of me.
"What're you doing walking around the city in the dead of night, pipsqueak?"
My eyes drifted up, up, up until I finally met his gaze. He was easily taller than Eijirou, who was over six feet tall, and built like a fucking ox. He sported messy, unkept blond hair. If I cared about anything at that moment, I would have been absolutely terrified of his twisted smile. "Walking," I said bluntly.
He let out a brutish laugh at my response. After he calmed down and I debated just stepping past him, he spoke again. "You know, this city's not safe so late. Especially for someone so... small," he mused, looking proud of himself for pointing out our obvious height difference.
I rolled my eyes, officially at the end of my rope for the day. "I don't really care, big guy."
"You got fire, I'll give you that," he said, amused with my deadpan answers. "Look like the partying type too. I'm heading to one now, care to join?" He raised one bushy brow in question, but we both knew I didn't have much of a choice. The streets around us were deserted, if I refused and he pulled something, I was fucked. There was no way I could fight back.
"You don't even know my name and you're inviting me to some party?" I wasn't sure what my plan was or if I even had one to begin with. My brain was on autopilot, words automatically leaving my mouth without my permission.
"Well?" he pressed, still finding humor in our interaction. I supposed that was a good thing, better than him getting angry or annoyed with me. "What's your name, pretty thing?"
Even in my numb, unfeeling state, the pet name still made my stomach drop. "Midoriya," I replied curtly.
"Care for a party, Midoriya?"
I shook my head, my neck starting to hurt from looking up at him. How was this guy so fucking tall?"I still don't know your name."
He chuckled again, the sound deep and full. It seemed he really was enjoying our little chat. "Imasuji."
"Sure, Imasuji. I've got nothing better to do," I answered with a shrug.
He was surprised by my answer, taking a few moments to process before a full-blown smile overtook his face. "Let's get going then."
"Lead the way."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The first thought I had when waking up was Izuku. He'd been completely cut off the previous night, hiding away in his comforter and adamant about not talking to me. I had wanted to push and prod until he finally snapped, just so he would say something, but... he'd never been like that before. He had never completely shut down to the point where he didn't even try to run.
Izuku was a runner, always had been. The first sign of trouble and he took off. I had never seen him so broken he hadn't tried to escape. It scared the shit out of me enough to back off. At least for the night.
I looked over to his bed, expecting to see his curled-up form under his blanket, but was met with an empty bed. I tried to stay calm, to not panic, because there were a million reasons why he wouldn't be in bed anymore.
My first thought was he had just woken up before me and had gone downstairs or something, so I got my ass out of bed. I searched everywhere but my mom's room and Inko's, the doors were still closed, so they were both probably still asleep.
Okay, he wasn't in the house. There was still no need to panic. He probably just headed over to Kirishima and Bakugou's place. It was basically his second home and he disappeared over there all the time without saying a word to anybody.
I tried to call him first, but it went straight to voicemail. His phone was off or dead. Great.
Thankfully, Bakugou didn't seem to ever have his window closed. I was able to easily maneuver my way over to the blond's room, having done it more than my fair share already. He was still sound asleep, with no Izuku in sight.
"Bakugou," I said, hoping he was a light sleeper. He didn't stir.
"Hey, wake up," I tried a little louder this time. Still nothing.
"Wake the fuck up!"
"What the hell?!"
Bakugou sat bolt upright, his red eyes searching the room and landing on me. His face instantly morphed into a scowl. "What the fuck are you doing?"
"I can't find Iz," I explained quickly. "Is he here?"
"Does it fucking look like it?" the blond asked, gesturing to his empty bed. "Go ask Ei," he instructed, waving me off.
I didn't need to be told twice. Don't panic, he's just in Kirishima's room. Not bothering to knock, I burst right into the redhead's bedroom. He was already up, sitting at his desk. His eyes left whatever he had been working on when I entered, his brows knitting together in confusion as he saw me. "Hey dude, what're you doing here?"
"Can't find Iz," I said shortly, anxiety rearing its ugly head as I started to run out of options. "Is he here?"
"No," he answered, looking me up and down. "Why're you freaking out so much? What happened?"
Kirishima's knack of perception usually pissed me off, but I couldn't have been more grateful for it right then. "His dad was at the house last night. They talked and he came back to our room and completely shut down," I breathed, my hand pushing my hair out of my face as dread started to form a pit in my stomach. "He wouldn't talk to me, wouldn't let me touch him, nothing. I woke up this morning and he was gone. His phone's off."
Kirishima's face had gradually dropped more and more as I talked, the reality of our situation setting in. "Did you already ask Katsuki?"
"He told me to ask you."
"Fuck, okay." He pushed himself away from his desk. "I'll call Sero, you call Todoroki, and we'll work our way down the list. He's got to be with one of them." His phone was already out, dialing the number of, who I assumed to be, Sero.
He motioned with his hand for me to follow him as I clicked on Todoroki's contact. We walked back over to Bakugou's room, the blond raising a brow in question at us. "Call Kaminari, ask if he's seen Izuku," Kirishima instructed just before Sero picked up and started talking to him.
Bakugou didn't need to be told twice. He was completely unaware of what had happened, but could still tell it was bad. His phone was in his hand in seconds.
"Hello?" Todoroki's voice flooded the line, faint static crackling in the background.
"Have you seen Iz?" I asked, cutting straight to the point. "His dad was at the house and said something to him. We can't find him." I was trying my damn hardest to not sound like I was about to have a breakdown, but I doubted it was working. Even to my own ears, my voice sounded panicked and shaky.
"I haven't seen him since school," he answered honestly, I heard him shouting for Uraraka. "Uraraka hasn't seen him either. Do you need me to head over there?"
I let out a breath, because yes, of-fucking-course I needed him to head over here. "Yeah, Kirishima and Bakugou are calling the others, but it doesn't look like they know anything either," I said, looking over at the other two boys. Bakugou was absolutely livid, while Kirishima appeared like he was seconds away from hitting the ground.
"Call Toga, he might have gone to the bar," Todoroki suggested. "I'll be there in fifteen."
"'Kay, thanks," I mumbled, not bothering with a goodbye before I hung up and dialed the girl's number.
"Hello? Why the hell are you calling so early?" Toga whined from the other end of the call. She had definitely just woken up.
"Is Izuku with you?" There was no point in even bothering to try and conceal my panic. At this point, we were grasping at straws, desperate for any lead on where he'd fucked off to.
"No, why? Did you fucking lose him?" Her shock was palpable, even over the phone.
"Fuck," I said, suddenly out of breath. "You were my last idea."
"A little offended I wasn't your first, but that's not that point," she grumbled. "What the hell happened and why is he gone?"
"His dad happened," I answered, completely ignoring the first half of her statement. I didn't have time to coddle her feelings. Izuku was officially missing.
"That bitch? When the fuck did he show up?"
"Yesterday," I groaned, pitching the bridge of my nose. I could feel a migraine coming on, which was the last thing I needed right then. "He said something to him and now he's gone. No one's seen him since last night."
"Fuck," she hissed. "Fuck, okay," she took a deep breath, "okay, I'll go talk to Dabi. Maybe he showed up at the club last night. Even if he didn't, Dabi might still know something. I'll text you in a few."
The line went dead.
I dropped the hand holding my phone to my side, looking over at Kirishima and Bakugou, who both looked as disappointed as I felt. "Toga's gonna talk to Dabi, but she hasn't seen him. Neither has Todoroki or Uraraka."
"Sero and Ash haven't talked to him since school," Kirishima said, dropping his weight back onto the wall behind him.
"Sparky was fucking useless like always," Bakugou grumbled, glaring daggers at the bed sheets in front of him.
"So, we have no fucking clue?" I asked in utter disbelief. There was no way this was happening, it couldn't be.
"He could have just gone on a walk this morning or something," Kirishima said, trying to be hopeful, but he sounded just as defeated as the rest of us. "He might be back any minute."
The heels of my palms dug into my eyes as the world felt like it tipped off its axis. "I knew he wasn't okay. I fucking knew it, and I just listened when he told me to drop it. I shouldn't have gone to sleep, I should have just stayed up. I could have stopped him from leaving-"
My self-deprecating rant was cut off by none other than Bakugou. "Throw yourself a pity party after we find him," he snapped, but it didn't have the heat it normally held.
"We should talk to his mom," Kirishima said, sounding lost in his own brain. "Maybe she knows where he went..."
"Doubtful," I mumbled, letting my hands drop from my face. "But it's worth a try."
"If she doesn't," Kirishima dragged his eyes away from where they had been staring off into space over to me. "Do we call the cops?"
I shook my head quickly, knowing that would be the last thing Izuku would want. "He'd lose his shit if we called it in. Besides, he needs to be gone for seventy-two hours before we can file a report," I explained with a sigh. It wasn't the first time I had to consider the possibility.
"Fuck that," Katsuki snarled, his energy returning full force as he climbed to his feet. "If we don't find him in seventy-two hours, we're calling the cops. I don't give a fuck if it'll piss him off, he's gone."
I crossed my arms, biting at my lips ring. It was a nervous habit I'd had ever since getting it pierced. "Fine," I conceded. "If we don't find him in three days, we'll report him as missing."
"Three days?" Kirishima asked, looking between Bakugou and I. It seemed to take a tremendous effort for the redhead. "Do we really think it'll take that long to find him?"
Both of them turned to me expectantly. It was only fair, seeing as I had known him the longest, been there for every one of his worst breakdowns and benders. I wished that I could reassure them, confidently say that he'd be back in an hour, but I couldn't.
"I have no idea."
And this is where it gets fun :)
