Chapter 16
ok don't be that proud weirdos, i'm stoned again.
Being back home was awesome. It was shitty that it wasn't my home, but Uraraka's was the next best thing I suppose.
We had this adorable little birthday dinner with her parents on Saturday, our first official day there. It was immediately followed by a house party. Not Uraraka's, obviously, but it was still her idea to go. I wasn't even sure how she found out about it.
I vaguely recognized the house we walked to (Todoroki refused to be the sober cab, but wouldn't let anyone else drive his car), but I didn't know the owners. Our hometown was more of a home city. I didn't know half the kids in my grade.
"And everyone's already staring at us," I pointed out as soon as we passed the threshold. It seemed like everyone in the house was throwing glances our way, a range of emotions on their faces, everything from shock to disgust to fear. Fan-fucking-tastic.
Shinsou did one sweep of the living room before turning away. "I'm officially too sober for this."
"I think the kitchen's this way." I was already taking a step before I'd finished my sentence. It was physically impossible for me to agree with him any more at that moment.
"Why did we have to come to this?" Todoroki asked once we had safely made it to the kitchen. I handed him a plastic cup filled with cheap beer, the only thing the party seemed to offer.
Uraraka frowned at the question, taking a long drink from her own cup. "I thought it'd be more fun."
"And how's that hope holding up?" Shinsou asked before downing the rest of his cup, refilling it immediately after.
I narrowed my eyes at him, noticing his behavior was off. He looked nervous like he was waiting for some sort of disaster to happen. I was getting anxious just watching him.
"I miss my girlfriend," was her only reply, a small pout forming on her lips as she stared down at her cup.
I snorted into my own, narrowly avoiding booze spraying from my nose. "Cannot relate."
"I'm your girlfriend," she said back, her pouting becoming even more prominent as she turned her accusing glare to me.
I raised a brow. "Wanna make out in a dark hallway later?"
She hummed, thinking my proposal over. "Not particularly."
"This is why I don't miss my girlfriend," I said to Shinsou, waving my hand wildly towards her.
He shook his head at our bickering, a faint smile on his lips that he tried to hide behind his cup. "I think you need a new one."
I waved him off, taking a big gulp of my drink before responding. "You can fill out an application later."
I watched in delight as Uraraka laughed mid-drink, causing beer to run down her chin as she frantically tried to dry it with a sleeve. "Spitters are quitters, Ura."
Uraraka looked at me, unamused. "First off, I'm a lesbian. Second," she turned her eyes to Shinsou, "is Izuku a quitter?"
The insomniac choked on his beer as I nearly fell over from the abruptness of my laughter. I didn't know what I was expecting her comeback to be, but it wasn't that.
Shinsou fell into a coughing fit and Uraraka realized she wasn't going to get an answer. With an annoyed groan, she turned back to me. "I wanna dance."
I faked a wince, hopping onto the counter behind me. "I'm going through a really hard break up, rain check?" It was technically a joke, a flippant remark about a relationship I didn't care about anymore. Bringing it up still put a damper on my mood though, and suddenly I really didn't feel like dancing.
Uraraka took one look at Shinsou, still trying to catch his breath, and grabbed Todoroki's wrist. "You're up, Todo!"
The taller boy's eyes met mine, wide and afraid. He was silently begging me to save him. I couldn't help but laugh as he was dragged back to the living room.
"Can't believe you just fed him to the wolf like that," Shinsou said, leaning against the counter beside me.
"Can't believe you faked that whole thing to get her to leave you alone," I quipped right back. He had never choked, orchestrating the whole thing to get out of answering Uraraka's question.
He rolled his eyes at me, taking another drink. "Didn't want to embarrass you."
"It's Uraraka," I said in an obvious tone. "I tell that girl everything. She knows I'm not a quitter. She asked to fuck with you." I couldn't be embarrassed by his answer if everyone already knew what it was.
"I was trying to be respectful," he grumbled, pointedly avoiding looking directly at me.
I smiled softly to myself at his reasoning.
In a matter of seconds, Shinou moved himself from beside me to standing between my legs, his hands placed on either side of me on the counter. "Izuku, I need you to kiss me," he said in a rushed whisper.
I gaped at him as if he had grown a second head. "What?"
"Kiss me. Right now. Please," he begged, frantically tossing glances over his shoulder.
"Shinsou, what the hell-" I didn't get to finish my question.
His right hand shot up, grabbing the back of my head and pulling me forward, connecting our lips before I could even blink. My eyes fluttered closed on instinct and I was kissing him back, my hands traveling up his arms before clasping around his neck, pulling him closer.
I had forgotten how good of a kisser Shinsou was.
It wasn't aggressive like Katsuki, or commanding like Eijirou. It was familiar and heated and made me melt against him. My feelings for Shinsou didn't seem so distant and forgotten anymore.
"Shinsou, I didn't know you were-" The most irritating, grating, arrogant voice I had ever heard broke us apart.
I didn't remove my arms, keeping Shinsou stuck in place, not that he seemed to mind. We were both panting for the kiss, faces flush even in the dim lighting.
"Oh, Midoriya. I didn't know you two were back together."
I lazily looked over Shinsou's shoulders and made direct eye contact with Neito Monoma. Smiling sweetly, I looked back at the boy in front of me. "It's recent, don't beat yourself up over it."
The blond rolled his eyes, a scowl twisting its way onto his features. "What're you guys doing back here?" His irritation was just making me giddy. Fucking with Monoma was one of my favorite hobbies.
"Being disappointed in the booze," I answered, loosening my hold on Shinsou as he twisted to face the other teen. His back was now leaning against the counter, my arms still wrapped around him, my chin on his shoulder. Monoma was fuming at the new position and I couldn't be happier.
The blond gritted his teeth and I watched as his jaw tensed and relaxed. "I don't remember inviting you anyway."
"Oh!" I said, perking up at the new piece of information. "This is your house?" I was crossing all of my fingers and toes that he would say yes.
"Obviously." The statement was punctuated with an eye roll, his arms crossing in annoyance.
I grabbed my cup quickly, flipping it upside down, and watched as the gold liquid splashed onto the kitchen floor. "Oops, I'm such a clutz," I said in a ditzy voice, reveling in the way Monoma's mouth hung open in unabashed shock.
Shinsou faked a cough, trying to cover up his laughter but failing miserably, I gently pushed him forward as I hopped down from the counter and snatched his half-full cup from his hand. "Well, if we're party crashers, we should probably just head out," I shrugged, intertwining our hands and heading for the living room.
As soon as we were out of the kitchen, Shinsou tugged on our hands, pulling me to a halt. "Thank you for that," he spoke loudly, trying to be heard over the blaring music playing over the speakers.
"You should have just told me he was trying to get into your pants, I would have helped sooner," I explained with a laugh, slightly swaying to the bass of the song.
He pulled me toward him, his arm wrapping around my waist and holding me in place. His mouth moved to my ear, while I grabbed onto his shirt to steady myself. "You're hot when you're being snarky."
I pulled away just enough to look up at him, a deadpan look on my face. "I'm always snarky."
"And?" he asked, one brow raised, pulling me impossibly closer.
My breath hitched as I followed the upward tilt of his lips. His stupid fucking smirk was making my brain go fuzzy. "We should find Uraraka and Todoroki," I breathed, my eyes fixed on that goddamn smirk.
"Yeah?" he asked, his voice all teasing as he leaned even closer.
"Mhm," I hummed, tilting my head back to make up for the height difference.
His free hand made its way to my hair, gently pulling on the curls at the nape of my neck. "In a sec," he whispered, connecting our lips for the second time that night and pushing me back against a wall.
This kiss was hungrier, both of us completely giving in to it. All of our bickering, the joking, the tension, it all imploded into that kiss. It was a cacophony of teeth and tongue, feeling more like one of our screaming matches than an intimate moment, but that's what Shinsou and I were. Fire and gasoline, constantly one spark away from an explosion.
We found the others a few minutes later. More accurately, they found us.
"Oh, we are talking about this later, mister!" Uraraka shouted over the music, her words slurring together as she leaned her weight against Todoroki.
I blinked, looking from the panting Shinsou to the drunk girl. "Yeah, okay," I said breathlessly. As if I wasn't going to talk to her about it. The whole reason I wanted to find my other two friends so badly was so I could talk to her about the kiss in the kitchen.
"How did she get so drunk? We've been here for twenty minutes," Shinsou asked, tossing a look over his shoulder at Todoroki. He seemed to be in no rush to release me from where I was trapped, between him and the wall. I didn't mind either, enjoying the fact I could rest my forehead against his chest to, hopefully, calm the spinning sensation in my head.
"Tequila!" Uraraka sang, throwing her hands into the air before falling into a fit of giggles. Todoroki narrowly avoided dropping her.
I looked up just in time to catch Shinsou rolling his eyes at her. "Time to go, Iz."
Nodding weakly, I let him drag me through the crowd and out the front door, our two friends walking ahead of us. As we traveled down the roads of our hometown, Shinsou and I trailed back a few feet, our hands still clasped together.
"You okay?" he asked eventually, breaking our uneasy silence.
"Mhm," I hummed, glancing down at our intertwined hands.
"You can talk to me, Iz."
I looked away from him, finding the grass to my left much more interesting all of a sudden. "Talk about what?"
He scoffed at the question, but there was no malice behind the gesture. "Maybe the fact I had you up against a wall five minutes ago?"
"Oh," I muttered, feeling his hand give mine a soft squeeze. "That."
"Look," he spoke with a sigh. "You've been drinking, if that's all it was-"
"It wasn't," I said all in one breath, cutting him off before I could change my mind. "It wasn't just because I was drinking."
His grip on my hand tightened once again. "Oh, um..."
I weakly chuckled at his loss for words. "You finally get what you want and that's all you have to say?"
"It's hard to find something to say when you seem so upset about it," he said in a soft voice, making my breath hitch.
I shook my head quickly, forcing a deep breath into my lungs to steady myself. "I'm not... upset about the kiss. I just- It feels like... like I cheated on them," I finally managed to admit out loud. "I know that's stupid, because we broke up, but..."
I glanced up as he gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. He wore a faint, pained smile. "I don't think it's stupid, Iz."
I quickly averted my eyes, hating the fact that I was hurting him again. Hurting people was all I seemed to do lately. "I'm sorry," I whispered.
"Don't be." His words brushed the whole thing off, while he tugged me closer, tucking me into his side with an arm wrapped around my shoulders. "I think I've proved by now that I don't mind the long game. I can wait."
I playfully rolled my eyes, not that he could see it. "You're impossible."
"An impossibly good kisser," he corrected, his hand ruffling my hair for a second before going back to my shoulder, holding me in place before I could even try to escape.
"Shut up," I laughed, resigning myself to being held against him for the remainder of the walk. He was warm compared to the brisk night air, so I didn't have many complaints.
"Make me."
"I'm not kissing you again."
"But we're so good at it!"
Don't panic yet, there's still so much more to this fic :)
